I was there to check out the tree. Oh that tree is glorious, over 225 feet with a truck of neatly 21 inch circumference. Anyways back to the shop. It's in a red painted building in front of Lucky Llama coffee. Heritage sells sustainable, eco friendly items in a curated country store. The merchandise range from baby clothes, toys, art, kitchenware, stationary, vegetable and flower seeds, dishes, drink ware, etc. Think modern and hip. The items are practical and beyond the mundane same old. The price points are at boutique pricing but not so outrageously priced. The items that caught my eye were art prints from Hello Coyote, and Little Salt Wagon. May I add, pieces were affordable ranging from small prints, greeting cards, to larger sizes. Little Salt Wagon is art from local Ventura County artist Amanda Cox. Simple, but beautiful watercolors inspired by the rural Ventura County surroundings.

Island Outfitters is a beachy themed adult/seniors store, I would say, that carries mostly brand name clothing made with high quality materials and very high pricing. They do have a section I enjoy browsing at the front that include seashell style gifts and home decor. During the holidays they have beautiful, unique ornaments as well, but again way out of my price range. There is a funny little fur ball dog that greets you each time you walk in. It's very friendly and well trained, just wants to say hi! They also usually have packets of California poppy seeds at the front in an orange paper wrapped back for you to take, no charge. I love the concept of keeping California traditions alive like that. The staff here are welcoming and very focused on their jobs. They may not make a huge effort for customer service but if you go up and ask questions they're glad to help. Parking can be found on Linden Ave, side streets, or the lot behind Crushcakes. I will continue to come back to see what new ideas that have brought into the store, but quite honestly unless there is a massive 70% off bargain sale I don't see myself seriously shopping/purchasing here.

Their clothing is gorgeous, high quality, and unique. I was elated when I saw they had opened a store on State Street in Santa Barbara. My first visit was to buy a gift for a friend (she loved a pair of wide leg linen pants I had and I wanted to get her something similar). I found the item I was looking for and asked the cashier what the return policy was. I never asked before because when buying for myself, I make sure I 100% want the item and it fits perfectly, as I hate to return stuff. I was told I could get my money back if I returned it within 14 days with receipt. After that, it was store credit only. The pants did not fit my friend, so I went to return them. I was told I could only get store credit. I phoned the Ojai store and explained what happened, and they allowed the return for cash. I will not go into detail as to how I got treated when I returned the pants once again to store manager Andrea. It was the most obnoxious, ungracious way to treat a great customer. So for all of you who go shop at Kariella and I highly recommend the store, just avoid dragon Andrea. You can't miss her : hair uncombed, tattoos all over, bare stomach hanging over clothing that is 2 sizes too small for her weight, looking like she just came rolling in from having spent a night in a biker's bar. The other girls who work at Kariella are super friendly and nice, just like the people in the Ojai store. 10 stars for Kariella! -100 stars for Andrea!

Unfortunately, the staff has consistently come across as unfriendly and unwelcoming. As a customer, it's hard not to wonder if we're being treated differently, and that feeling is disappointing. Whether that's the case or not, we've never felt welcomed here despite being loyal customers. It's sad that after so many visits, the experience has never improved. Based on our repeated experiences over the years, I can't recommend this shop. Zero stars.

Years later, it continues to evolve with beautiful new pieces while staying true to everything that made it so special from day one. The quality, craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and genuine hospitality remain as exceptional as ever. One of the things I appreciate most is that Homer is about so much more than beautifully curated merchandise. Terry's unmistakable point of view is evident throughout the collection. From beautifully crafted leather bags and travel pieces to canvas totes, belts, trays, and thoughtfully designed everyday essentials, there's a timeless quality that runs through it all. His collaborations with skilled artisans result in pieces that feel both refined and deeply personal. If Terry's beautifully restored classic car is parked outside, there's a good chance he's in. Whether you're simply stopping by for the perfect gift or have a few extra minutes to browse, you'll always be welcomed with genuine warmth. You'll often be greeted by Mary, whose warmth, international perspective, and effortless hospitality perfectly complement the spirit of Homer. One of my favorite additions is their curated QR code of local recommendations. So many people have asked Terry where he loves to eat, shop, and explore that he finally created a guide. It's a wonderful resource for visitors and locals alike, and another example of the generosity and thoughtfulness behind Homer. Be sure to check their hours before stopping by. They're intentionally limited, which somehow makes every visit feel just a little more special. Homer is about taste, craftsmanship, and community. Whether you're popping in for a thoughtful gift or taking a little extra time to explore, you'll leave inspired. We are fortunate to have Homer here
