Lunch w mi madre. Tilio's in Athens. Sometimes you just need a lunch buffet. The chicken alfredo tastes like a fall evening after school. The fried fish is excellent. The perfect amount of cornmeal breading. Feels lighter than it should. Delightful. Also, some damn good greens and green beans. And I could just sit and eat the sausage and onion like a mindless, drooling drone all damn day perfectly content if I let myself. If it'd been meatloaf day, I might still be there. Best breakfast in Athens, bar none. The most extensive breakfast menu goes beyond the regular eggs, biscuits & coffee. The quiche of the day with fruit (lots of fruit) and the fluffy pancakes are my favorites. The staff is attentive & friendly & the coffee is good too. read more

We have been eating at Tilo's (early and current locations) for over 20 years. We fell in love with his buffet from day one and it has not changed at all. He is also a tremendous baker, just his bakery alone is reason to visit. The salad bar and daily buffet is always fresh and cooked to perfection. If you don't want the buffet, he also had an extensive menu. Only downside to this restaurant is that they close at 2:00 so you have to look elsewhere for dinner. read more

We love Tilo's! We've been in Athens for a little over a year and this is one our favorite haunts. Sometimes the buffet is awesome and sometimes a few items on it aren't but over all the food is great. Pay no attention to anything bad you hear about the buffet being "tiny". Athens is a small town and so the actual size of the buffet isn't ginormous like something you might find in thralling metropolis; say like Austin TX ;) Tilo makes amazing cinnamon rolls, cakes and pies. He opens for holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving but by reservation only. He had a really good Valentine's Day special this year and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Look, if your tastes run toward Brunch at Fearing's at the Ritz Carlton, this place "ain't" for you (haha). This is a great "hole in the wall" type place. My first time to visit was for Sunday breakfast. My sister had eggs Benedict, and I had pancakes, eggs over-medium, sausage & hash browns. They did a pretty good job on the eggs Benedict, the eggs were perfectly poached. My breakfast was very good. Eggs were cooked exactly as I had ordered, good hash browns, pancakes very tasty. Eating here was a quite the unpleasant surprise, based off these reviews. The buffett is incredibly tiny. There was basically just chicken fried steak, potatoes and a couple vegetable options-everything straight from the can or box. There was this glazed meat with onion that looked promising not sure what it was, but it was tough and so bland it would not be fair to call it chicken. (It was "chicken".) The chicken fried steak needed salt and breading was soggy. It was very sub par. The potatoes tasted like they had so much MSG in them my brain's toxin alarm was tripping balls on the first bite from all the excitotoxicity action going on. The salad bar had some lettuce and two fresh vegetables to choose from : tomatoes and onion. (hope you don't like salads.) It also had like 45,000 different kinds of pasta salads and enough hidden valley dressing to fill up the Marina Trench....yet nothing to go with all the dressing..interesting. The only thing i found even slightly appetizing was the pea salad. And finally, you would think with this being a bakery their buffett baked goods would be yummy right? Wanting to kind of advertise to have returning customers??? Right???? Bread pudding was disgusting, bland, some of the worst food I've ever had in my life. Honestly I didn't understand how this place was in business, until I looked around and noticed it's all literally just old men who clearly don't care what it tastes like as long as they don't have to cook. There was another "dessert" too, but I could just tell by looking at it they didn't even cook any of it and it all just came out of a box or a package!! Tilo's is the worst restaurant in Athens, TX. You are better off picking up a $5 pizza from Little Caesar's Pizza. Lunch for 2 of us including tip and soda was $36.00! Yikes!! We decided to try out Tilo's because of the reviews here on Yelp. First off to get into the restaurant you had to enter a building with other businesses despite the fact it's in a store front. When we entered we could tell the restaurant is in need of an update unless you enjoy the 1980's dining experience. They have cloth napkins but both of ours had holes in them and it wouldn't even wipe up the water drips from the glass table. Outdated carpet, chairs, decor and glass table tops. I wonder when the last time they actually changed out the table cloths as ours was stained. We were not offered menus, they assumed we would be getting the buffet. The salad bar, if you want to call it that, had very little to offer and for $7.95 it's not worth it. The plates are small, there's only a mixed lettuce option with the cabbage and carrots, the ranch dressing was so runny it had no taste. I could see paying maybe $4.95 for just the salad bar, certainly not $7.95. The hot buffet for $9.95 for lunch had 3 fried food options, mashed potatoes, green beans and rolls along with something in a crock pot (clearly not for commercial use). After going through 3 plates to find a clean one, my husband picked his lunch items. The rolls were hard as a rock on the bottom after sitting in the pan. The chicken fried steak had a bone in it and was gray in color. The barbecue beef was extremely fatty and greasy. He managed to eat the chicken fried steak and he did enjoy the mashed potatoes and gravy. There were no signs to identify anything on the buffet. I really question if the food was being kept at the correct temperature to be considered safe to eat. My husband didn't get sick so I guess so! I ordered the quiche and when I cut into it oil ran all over my plate. I took a bite anyways and the crust was soggy and full of oil. I told the waitress and asked if I could just get a baked potato instead. She had to go ask someone if that was ok. It took over 10 minutes to get the baked potato that was medium in size at best. When I started to mix the butter and sour cream I noticed the color of the potato was brownish in color and the closer I got to the skin, the potato was almost black. I asked for chives and was given green onion, clearly not chives. We got our bill and proceeded to pay. Our server actually checked us out and asked how everything was, already knowing it wasn't great. She rang up our orders and I questioned her when I was charged $5.95 for a baked potato. Yes, $5.95 for a black baked potato with butter and sour cream. Absolutely ridiculous. She proceeded to tell me that she was told to charge for the amount of the quiche that was disgusting. The manager, owner, chef, no one came out to talk to me about our experience and I certainly wasn't told I would still be charged for the quiche. Poor communication, poor management, poor quality food, poor options. Skip it and save yourself the money and aggravation. read more

Tilo's is our go-to restaurant. The buffet is always good, and the menu items are great. My husband loves Tilo's breakfast as well as his Salisbury steak. Tilo's hamburgers are the best in Athens. I am diabetic and there is always plenty for me to choose from. My husband is not, so he's sampled the desserts and likes them. read more

We found this place after church on a Sunday afternoon and was quite impressed with their Sunday buffet. Had a wonderful selection of fresh vegetables and five to six different types of meat to chose from. Salad bar and dessert bar is included with your buffet price also. Came with my mom & Grampa. We all ordered different things: Grampa had the 10-ounce sirloin steak (medium? But he said it was "just perfect".), Mom had the buffet (nice variety of Tex-Mex food), & I had the vegetable quesadillas (vegetarian-friendly, included broccoli, carrots, & mushrooms with sour cream, guacamole, rice, & refried beans [but not too "pasty"]). We all had water, which was great since the salsa made me thirsty. But it wasn't too extremely spicy. I kinda liked the thick chips that went with their salsa, they didn't break as easily as (or held more salsa than) chips at other restaurants. Service was great, prices were decent, & it wasn't too terribly busy or loud. The restrooms are one-seaters, but clean & well-maintained. I would love to go back & eat here again sometime! read more

Tilo's is one of my go to places for lunch! You can have the buffet, which is pretty typical but the food is good "home cooking" and includes one or two of Tilo's wonderful desserts. Or you can order from the menu for a variety of delicious options. My favorite thing to order is the Quiche...especially the Spinach Quiche. You can get this with the chicken pecan green salad which has spring greens,, crispy chunks of chicken; toasted pecans, fresh strawberries; etc. This comes with a delicious homemade dressing and a miniature muffin and some small crispy bread slices. Very tasty! The bread pudding on the buffet is really excellent too. The service is great and if you want to keep your waistline, do not look in the cooler in the reception area.....wow! What an array of delicious looking cakes and pies. Tilo's is also open for dinner and breakfast....will have to try those soon! The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is very pleasant. Came here with family after Easter church service for their buffet. Service was slightly above average and the food was also slightly above average. The fried shrimp and fried chicken were pretty good, everything else, it was alright. Nothing to write home about, but there was no reason for me to not want to come back. read more
