We had a horrible experience working with Eddie who's one of the hair stylists there at Time. He greeted us with his cold ice face when we walked in and took less than 15 minutes to finished an "unfinished" haircut and claimed that he's done with the job. The haircut was uneven all across and he didn't even finish the back side of the head, my son walked out the salon looks like an idiot because of this haircut. When we got home and had the chance to take a closer look, we were shocked at how careless this person must be to do such a terrible job on someone's hair, and he dare to charge $50 dollars for this lousy job. It's unacceptable and it's incredibly upsetting to have to go through this experience right before the holidays. We will never go back to Time salon because of Eddie. read more

Not bad for a hair salon. The place is VERY well decorated inside, with lots of open room and empty space. The customer before me actually drove from out of town to come for haircuts, and have been doing so for 10+ years, so it looks like some number of people like the place a lot. Overall, the prices a little on the high side ($40 for a cut and rinse). The stylists seem to know what they're doing, but being a no'thrills haircut kind of guy I wasn't really able to get much out of their expertise. The place is probably better suited to folks who want major hair work done. The location is pretty good (right in the middle of downtown San Mateo), so if you happen to walk by, it's worth taking a look inside! read more

All I have to say is that Eddie is THE hair guru. He is a genius hair sculpter/shaper. He is very artistic and tells you like it is. If you want bangs and your face is not a "bang" face then he'll tell you no, and he's usually right. One time I brought in a picture of Meg Ryan's shaggy bob cut and he just laughed and told me that if I cut my hair like that it will spike all over the place and look "very funny". If you need a massive hair revival, this is your guy. He doesn't talk much but who needs talk when your hair is at stake. Although, now after 7 years we joke all the time about how large my head is. If you have some thick ass, coarse asian hair like I do, he is your man. When you leave the salon you might be a little overwhelmed by how much hair you see on the floor and how your hair might feel like a balding old woman ...but...when you walk down the street you will get compliments left and right with people asking you..."where did you get your hair done?" and you will give eddie a little silent thank you to yourself for looking hot hot hot!! His cuts grow out so well where you don't have to go back for a long time. I usually go for about 7-8 months before I go back. I love the fact that he's not a product pusher either and he just cuts your hair. he's priced right at 55 a haircut which is much cheaper that a lot of salons these days. Just remember, your hair will make or break you!!! You can have great makeup and a fabulous outfit but if your hair looks like ass it's all useless! I cheated on him a couple of months ago and I paid the price. The cut was a crazy hair job that cost me 95 bucks. A week later I had to book an appt where he was barely able to fix me. San Mateo is a long way from Oakland. It's also a long, long way from San Rafael. I have lived in both Oakland and San Rafael, and I will literally drive 45 minutes to an hour to get a haircut. Vain, you say? Overprotective, I say. But you're a guy, you say, and you're not supposed to care about your hair. Well, let me tell you a little story. A long, long time ago when I was a little boy, my grandfather took me to his barber. The barber cut my hair straight across the front and I was too young to protest. I was scarred for life. Now that I can choose who cuts my hair, I choose Eddie. He has been cutting my hair for more than ten years now. in 1995 B.E. (before Eddie) I had naively visited several places in San Rafael looking for someone who knew how to deal with my hair. To be fair, many tried. Even some of the best (i.e. "Best of Marin") salons. Unfortunately for me, they all failed. My friend's sister suggested Eddie, and I have been going ever since. Eddie is skilled and precise without a lot of chatter. His salon is clean and spacious. He's not a barber, he's a hair stylist. Call him whatever you want, but he's the only person who touches my hair. Finding parking is sometimes a chore in the busy downtown San Mateo area. I have been going to Time for years. Eddie is one of the best, most consistent stylists I have head. Also a good colorist. He is pretty popular, but always works with me to try to fit my schedule. Salon has a relaxed, friendly, creative vibe. A cool spot. I liked him so much I had my son started to go to Eddie. He has very different hair, but Eddie is doing a great job with him. It's trendy, but in a acetic, silverish way. All the staff appear to be very down-to-earth (no snobbery). As far as price, I'm not sure. I think it's on the higher end, but not the highest. I'm not a frequenter of salons (usually it's a home-hairdo or the barber for me), so I can't say exactly how the price compares to others. I paid $38 for a man's haircut. I just retired from the Marine Corps after 20 years. For 20 years my hair has been zero to three inches long and cut by a barber weekly. I haven't even had to brush my hair in 20 years. Learned that: if you can let go and trust other people with their recommendation and professional experience, you will end up with a better outcome. I am actually a bit hesitant to do this review since I want Eddie the master hair stylist to always have more time for me in midst of his very busy schedule! Joke aside, this is hands down the best salon in the bay area. The price isn't cheap at $40 for men but you get what you pay for. Eddie knows what he's doing and he is always updated with the latest trend. You can tell how good he is by his fast hair thinning technique, everything just feels smooth and effortless. I travel to Asia frequently and I can say Eddie easily edges out some of the more seasoned stylists in Taiwan and Tokyo as well. I just started going to Time Hair Salon several months ago, since I'm been going to Adelin for over a couple years now. I followed her here from her old salon in Millbrae and I will follow her wherever she goes. I absolutely love the way she cuts my hair and the way it grows out. I also get my foil highlights from her every 4 months or so. I haven't been disappointed yet, and I don't think I ever will. Love our girl talk too! She has a memory of an elephant! I always tell her it's like therapy each time I'm in there. I leave her salon with my hair looking good and I feel good too. She's all positive vibes. I really recommend Adelin, her charges are very reasonable. I hesitate to post pricing since I know how it is with stylists (as well as estheticians) and that their long term customs may have slightly different pricing than newer clients. Let's just say, I would never pay an arm and leg to get my hair done ever (well, unless it's my wedding day). I mean, I can never tell if someone just had a $100 haircut?! I'm a very reasonably person and I only pay reasonable pricing. Important: I just learned that my hair wasn't cut my a Time salon worker, but rather someone who rents space. Hands down the worst experience with a cut. The cut was done by Roy, and when I went to the salon to speak to the manager, I was told by someone that they can't do anything about it since he just rents a place. PLEASE don't rent your space to a talentless person. I have bangs and needed a trim, even came in to book an apt. Roy completely fucked up on my bangs that I can't even go into work today. It's an embarrassment. I can't believe I trusted this salon or the guy. Like you have one job, if you can't cut hair or do bangs, be honest. The entire time he kept trying to up sell me. I ended up getting my hair trimmed as well n was charged $45 which didn't include shampoo. This guy was so horrible he kept asking me if I wanted hair color and products. Horrible place, idk how people have given this horrendous place such good reviews. I am beyond upset. A message to Roy, change careers, or at least be honest. Update: went at lunch to speak to someone, Roy showed up, and basically told me that my hair wasn't straight, that's why my bangs are messed up, and how they usually wash hair before a hair cut. Well sweetie, I've had my bangs cut once by a lady at Ulta and they did a great job, she didn't have to wash my hair, and my hair was oily and gross from after a gym session. I am now being forced to work one full week from home because my bangs are that bad. The guy offered to fix it, but I didn't like his attitude and how he deflected the blame to my hair so I opted to not get my hair more messed up.Not that he cares, and don't expect anyone else to care but I actually have to cancel a photoshoot my hair is that bad, and I have to pay a $200 fine for cancelling on such a short notice, all because I was stupid enough to trust Roy to trim my bangs. I've been going to Adeline for about six years now, starting when she was at another place in San Bruno. I was willing to make the drive up when I worked in San Carlos, and I now make the drive down to San Mateo since I have moved to San Francisco. She always does a great cut and color, she's so sweet, and I always recommend her when I get compliments on my hair! Adeline's recommendations are very practical and she suggests color/cuts/styles/products that work best for you that are not super-high maintenance. The atmosphere of the salon is relaxing and comfortable, not trendy and pretentious like so many salons are where a "senior stylist" is a 23 year old who gives everyone the same hair cut (for example, Stilo Salon). I can't speak for the other stylists' work because I'm completely faithful to Adeline, but Time is well priced with easy parking and the stylists are experienced and down to earth. I went to this salon for the first time today. I have been searching for a salon on the peninsula since moving here from SF. Adelin was fabulous. I moved to the area recently and wanted to find someone who could cut my hair locally. After all the Yelp reviews, I was excited to try Eddie at the salon. Unfortunately, he really wanted to cut my hair the way he wanted to cut it. Really did not take the time to work with me. And, from what I read, it seems like he gives the same hair cut to all the ladies...the hidden layers! Anyways, my hair is still in recovery. i went here based on another person's recommendation that Time knew how to deal with thick, coarse asian hair. the way they dealt with my thick, coarse asian hair was to thin it out to the extreme. i came out of Time shocked, with about 2/3 of my hair on the ground. there was no styling done (yet i still paid $60 for no wash and no styling). i think my hair honestly looks like crap now. i had a loose-curls perm that looked very nice before. now that my hair is totally thinned out, the perm looks VERY scraggly. i have to curl the ends every morning with a curling iron (a process which totally defeats the purpose of getting a no hassle perm in the first place, right?) or wear a pony tail. i'm not a happy camper. the only good thing is that when i arrived, i had no cash, and as this is a cash/check only establishment, they were nice and trusting enough to say "just mail us a check when you get home." read more

I went to Eileen, based on other Yelp reviews, but had a bad experience. She was really pleasant, but I had understood she was good with curly hair. She ended up really thinning my hair out and, unlike most women with curly hair, I don't have a lot to begin with. I don't know that I'll go back and canceled my color, which was scheduled for the next week. I hate to leave this review because the hairdresser was so nice. I asked to have my layers removed and a chin-length bob, easy peasy. Instead, I got more layers, but two inches higher than before. I reminded the hairdresser that I was going for a bob. So I got a bob in front and a chop job in back. Remember Kate Gosselin with the short spiky hair in back and the bob in front? I don't usually give 5 star for anything. Getting my hair cut is always a scary thing for me because I'm almost always disappointed. I have naturally curly jew hair that not many hair stylist have the understanding for. Adeline gave me nice highlights and styled my hair perfectly for the type of hair I have and my busy life style. For the first time since I moved to the bay area, I can confidently wear my hair down. She gave me great tips on how to deal with my hair on a daily basis and was very freindly. I have been gettin my haircut by ADELINE since I was 14- the one time I went with someone else they RUINED my hair. Since then I have been a dedicated customer. I have followed Addy through about 5 different locations and salons and have always been treated like her number one customer. She knows the cut I like and dont even have to tell her what to do - when I get there its like visiting a friend! She gets straight to work and I never have to wait or make appointments long in advance. I would even drive up from LA to get my hair cut by her - she would even make special appointment times to squeeze me!
