I told her my story- I've basically been going to one person for my haircuts for the last 25 years of my life and he moved to New Mexico so I've been in desperate need for a haircut. I did that crazy thing where I went to Europe and got it chopped off ( I was so disappointed with my hair but there was also a language barrier) anyways, finally let my hair grow out enough so I can find someone local to cut it's after doing research for about a year or two ( I know... crazy) I found Naz. Salon sur la rue is a small but chic salon right on 41st Avenue in San Mateo. What makes this place special are the lovely hairdressers who work here. In the two time I've been here, they have men, older women and little kids coming in for haircuts, color, and style. Mila my hairdresser is great; she takes the time to ask you what you want - when my precious color was a little too light- she made it a shade darker. Prices seem reasonable. I paid $150 for a cut and color. They have great parking in front and Molly Stones is around the back from the shop, so if you need milk like I do, so easy to get all your chores done in one place! read more

I recently moved to San Mateo and needed a new stylist/colorist, did some Yelp research and found Mila at Salon Sur La Rue. The Salon is in a great location with easy parking, and has a nice, inviting happy client atmosphere. I've already had a few appointments with Mila and can say I have found my new go-to hair person and place. I had the typical COVID (lack of) hair style and had let my color go bland. Mila was able to bring my color back to life and add completely natural looking highlights (balayage). My hair color has never looked this great! Her cuts are also so good that I can literally shake my hair out and step out the door. Mila is always on time and takes extra care to make sure she is capturing exactly what you want. Sur La Rue has friendly professional hairdressers and nice interior but is too pricey. At the beginning, Milana quoted highlights + haircut+blow dry for $170. I asked to do only highlights ($110). Then we've overcame a little mix up in scheduling, and there I was in a chair. Milana is a very experienced hair stylist. Also, she wears hills and manicure every day, and she is pleasant to chat with. Nevertheless, she works without gloves when she does highlights, which might be a problem, as well as long nails don't help when washing the hair. By the way, the head washing station was one of the most uncomfortable I've ever experienced. I was pleased with the result sitting in the salon under the spotlight. Later I found out that the color looks different in other lighting conditions, so it is not the blond I'm happy with. It is not bad, but I have had better highlights before. When I asked Milana to give me a little trim, literally to cut a straight line, which took her about 2 minutes to do, she said that it will cost "a little more." Guess how much more it was? It was $65. Well, it doesn't sound like a transparent pricing to me. "A little more" is not $65. As the result I paid $175. Ridiculous. I feel like I haven't found my hairdresser yet. read more

She never gives up until my hair is just how I like it (sometimes requiring several passes). As a perfectionist in my own business, it's nice to have someone with equally high standards. As you can see from my pic....she's an artist, mixing up colors for my hair needs...not just generic one color. The studio is beautiful and warm. All the stylists are friendly. I was looking for someone close to home and came across this Salon. As I was reading the reviews it became quite clear that Mila was the choice. I saw her yesterday just for a hair cut and I love it. I got a trim with some layers. She talked to me about my hair in general and also about what I wanted done. I'm a 30-something, not super trendy in my clothes or style and yet would not come back. 2) my haircut was uneven, too short and I initially wanted to come back to have it fixed but after several days of unsuccessfully trying to find a time that worked for both the stylist and me, I gave up.
