I have very mixed feelings about this salon. I recently moved to Brooklyn and stumbled across this salon while walking down the street. I have been to this salon twice since I've moved to New York. The first time I came to this salon, it was for a deep condition, trim and blow out. It took 3.5 HOURS! and cost $85 not including tip. My stylist was Janelle. She was very good with my hair, however most of my time was spent waiting. Waiting, waiting and more waiting. Although it was expensive and took forever, I decided that perhaps the waiting was just a fluke and opted to give it a second chance. The second time I came to the salon it was for a shampoo and blow out. Again, it took 3 hours. I spent lots of time waiting. They also would not let my boyfriend sit inside to wait for me, so he had to wander the neighborhood in the hot heat. This time the service cost $70. There is no price list, it seems like they are just making the prices up. The other thing that this place really needs to improve on: TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. My stylist was very nice, but the receptionists have major attitude. On the phone and in person, they act like it's a chore to schedule your appointment. I can't decide whether or not to go back to this place. Janelle did a great job on my hair, but overall it is very expensive and between the wait, the prices, and the overall bad attitude of the staff, I may have to look for something else. read more

I felt compelled to write this review after reading a negative one. I was referred by my sister. I was a little apprehensive about the prices because I am a college student and I was paying $45 for a wash and press but I was tired of WAITING FOREVER and always having scheduling conflicts( stylist overbooked or late). I also don't mind paying the price for GREAT work. As they say, you get what you pay for. I love this salon! I love Stacy and the staff/ stylists of Time Studios. Everyone is friendly and warm. No one is stank when you join in on conversations. Whenever I am receiving a wash and press I am IN AND OUT. I am natural and never have any heat damage after a press from Stacy. The ONE time I wasn't seen immediately I had scheduled a same day appointment ( how many GOOD salons can you do that at?!) and Stacy apologized! ... I never witnessed one person on their phone except to take pictures of clients or unless a stylist was waiting for clients to come in. I've also called to ask for a price and was sent a whole price list. They also have a menu in the salon with prices on it. I also got my color done by Stacy and I LOVE it. I have never met a better group of people under one roof doing hair. Their relaxers are skillfully applied, their iron work is on point and they way they style out natural hair or dreads is AMAZING! if you have worked there for the past two months as a booth renter while my new salon is being built out and I have literally been blow away. Its just kind of unreal to that they have the skill, the team dynamic, kindness and friendliness that you just don't find in other salons. Although more expensive than what I am used to - I absolutely love this salon!!! (At first I didn't agree with the no children policy because not all the time can mothers have a free day but I do respect it.Lets be honest, our children can sometimes slow down the process and create a more noisy atmosphere and I actually enjoy the selection of music and being able to listen without any loud noise from children playing or mothers having to discipline them.Do we question any other establishment for their no children policy?) At one point I was going to Time Studio once a week.Keron is an excellent stylist and he actually takes the time to listen to your hair concerns and provides you with great feedback.Although there have been times that my stylist hasn't given me the exact style that I was expecting,I never leave dissatisfied - he ALWAYS gives me a great style and precise cut. Unlike a lot of hair stylist that I've come across,he values your time and begins to style me almost immediately.I haven't ever gone in for my appointment time and have to wait more than 5 minutes to begin; which I am always excited about because he gives the BEST scalp massage and does an excellent job at washing my hair with great products - giving my hair the right amount of lustre and body.He never forces me to get a relaxer just to do my short haircut(which Ive experienced at other salons) He works his magic regardless to the condition of my hair. One other thing that I respect is how he does not answer his phone or indulge in too many side conversations while he is attending to his clients.It hurt my soul when I had to cheat on him and go to another salon one day because he was booked.The level of service and respect was nothing like Time Studio. God I hate this place... I used to be a client at Time several years ago. The overbooking that lead to the unnecessary long wait times made me go elsewhere. We're talking upwards of 5 hours to get ANYTHING done, which all of their clients put up with on numerous occasions. My current stylist was out of town this week, so I stupidly decided to give Time another try. First clue that I was in for a bad experience. I called and asked the receptionist for the stylists prices for the service I was booking and she gave me a "range" because it depended upon whether or not I needed a conditioner, a cut or trim, etc.. I said "How about a price for exactly what I'm asking for?" Silence. I knew what that meant - crazy made up price AFTER the service is done. OK - I knew what I was in for but decided to go for it anyway. So I got there late (thanks again C train!) and was told that she couldn't take me. I totally understood. I mean, I WAS late so I just said - ok see ya - and left. Her not being able to take me wasn't really the issue. You know what really burned my a$$? The fact that the salon was EMPTY! My stylist to be was sitting there doing nothing in an EMPTY salon. I would have been a NEW CLIENT for her. That should have counted for something! And when I think of all those hours in the past that I sat there WAITING FOR THEM to get around to doing my hair, when I was always on time, I just couldn't believe the nasty attitude I heard coming from this stylist when the receptionist went to tell her I had arrived. And once again, she was sitting there doing nothing in an empty salon. Totally unprofessional and totally unnecessary. Note to the manager - Here's what would have happened in a professional place of business. The stylist would speak to me directly and tell me in a pleasant manner that I was too late for her to work on me but would gladly schedule another appointment for a different day. This establishes GOOD WILL and shows respect for the folks that are paying your bills. In this scenario, your salon would not have permanently lost a client (and possible referrals) AND would not have gotten the bonus of being outed for this bad behavior on the internet. read more

The definition of a great cut, is when you can wash your own hair before your next appointment, and it comes out layered perfectly as if you just had just got It done. man im impressed! ive been living in nyc for about 2 years now and this is the 1st barber ive tried in the city. being from philly, its hard to adjust to different styles of cutting in other cities. but i checked this place out through here and other websites and it had good reviews, so i gave it a shot. first off, the place itself it is nice. everything is well kept and the set up is simple and clean. for me, i have to be comfortable in a place before im able to enjoy it. i was definitely comfortable here. the owner/barber, Donovan, it a cool dude. he's definitely about his business and he has hands! my cut came out exactly how i wanted it, matter of fact even better. this dude's fades are incredible. i feel like 75% of my time in the chair was for the fade. the best part it that the cut fits my head. having a barber that knows how to cut to your head rather than just to give you a cut is extremely underrated. it came out sharp as hell and i got compliments right away after leaving the shop. read more

I always thought they were premier in hair care. Anytime my hair took a left turn, I could go there and they would repair it and make me look fabulous. Most recently I was disappointed with the service. I enjoyed the stylist but she didn't seem to offer any alternatives to helping my hair get back on track. I left there feeling like... A wanna be Elgin Charles Salon of Beverly Hills, the Time Salon of Brooklyn is a far cry from even the basic level of salon hospitality and professionalism. This establishment claims to be qualified after only taking a crash course in Bougie Customer Service 101. Upon entering the salon to greet my friend and wait for her hair to be finished, I was approached and told no guests were allowed. I have never heard of such a ludicrous policy. I was then "allowed" to stay and told they would make an exception just this time. Lucky me! None of the stylists are cordial and polite. Everyone remains serious in tone, cold, and unapproachable. The ambiance leaves much to be desired as well. Loud, irritating techno music blasts from the speakers, as stylists sing along as though they are at home in the shower. They appear to be more passionate about the salon soundtrack than interacting with their clients. Some of the music was very disturbing in content as well, prompting many customers to lock eyes with each other and make faces as if to ask "Is this for real?" The atmosphere if you decide to become a customer feels like waiting to be seen by the dentist. The only difference is the music you hear. Customers sit as though they anticipate getting a root canal. One stylist even sternly instructed customers to please scoot down on the salon couch to make room for more people. Are we in secondary school, or a salon? After one visit, my friend and I can venture to say we will not be coming here again. Experiment if you dare. Only the Time Salon will tell. read more

I grew up in Detroit where stylist know excellent hair styling techniques. So when I came to NY I was horrified to learn that most stylist here could do no more than dreadlocks, braids, weaves, or damage to the hair. I have natural hair but like to wear it straight.long, and styled. I know it doesn't take longer than 3 hours to do my hair. The salon is called Time because they might waste your's. Try John Atchinson at John Atchinson's Salon on Madison in Manhttan. Its pricey but excellent service all around. read more

In the mid/late 2000s, I moved from Brooklyn to Atlanta, but would make hair appointments with either Heather or Eric during my annual trips to Brooklyn. However, about 7 years ago, I went natural for a few years and then finally returned to perming my hair. Imagine my dismay when I visited Brooklyn, only to find Heather and Eric are no longer there! The stylists are great and talented and I never leave with a bad hair-do. However, CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS! I have worked in the Salon industry so I know how things can get crazy, but come on.The girl at the front desk is useless. Why have an appointment book if you are never on schedule? I went here for my first appt last week and I forget my stylist name but whey hooked me up. Im used to my silk presses being so flat and she changed that. Can't wait for my next appt in 1-2 week. As a black women having a stylist who can do what you need and give you great feedback on what would be good for your hair is very important. The vibes here were perfect, had my fave artist Jill Scott playing, ubwas offered water tea amongst other things. To start off I want to inform readers that I'm not cheap and opposed to paying vast amounts of money to get my hair done, IF its worth it. I'm not sure if this is the same Time Salon that was in Essence Magazine for being cost efficient for colleges students that want to keep their hair up and cant afford it. If it is, I'm calling Essence for false advertisement. Ugh, Where do I begin?? First of all I got my hair done on Sunday and its Wednesday and I'm still disgusted about going there. When I walked in I made sure I was early as my appointment was at 10am, so I got there at about 10 minute to 10. When I got in there I wasn't greeted by any of the stylist and didn't even know who was doing my hair until I was about to get my hair washed. She asked me what did I want to do with my hair and I explained to her that this was the first time that I'd been in a salon for years and I'm not sure of how long my hair was as Ive been wearing weaves in for months. I even pulled up picture to show her what I was aiming towards as in cut and style and they were more than realistic for me. I was seriously burned by the perm around my edges, which I might admit might have been my fault but I did inform her that I washed my hair before I came. However, as a stylist you would think that she would recommend me not getting the perm or not put something in as strong. I was had an apprentice working on me most of the time who didn't know how to wash hair or blow dry properly. You would think for someone who is there for the first time that you wouldn't have someone inexperienced doing their hair. I finally got my hair straighted and it was longer than expected and I wanted to keep the length as I'm growing my hair back. While I sat and waited to get my hair styled after almost 3 hours I pulled up additional pictures to let her know that I changed my mind about the style choices. I also watched her style other peoples hair and I should have known from what I was seeing that something wasn't right because their styles were boring and ugly, something they could've done on their own. I finally sat in the chair at about 2:00 pm (Mind you Ive been in there since 10 before 10) and shes still asking me what I want. At this point I'm irritated and praying that for all this waiting she hooks me up. So were talking for about 15 minutes about what she can and needs to do. She finally states that she needs to trim it and will cut it in a bob, which is what I wanted but I wanted choppy layers and something edgy. She starts cutting and then states that shes going to add some pieces in because my hair is not at the right length and is thin. I agreed because of course I want it to look good, I mean who wouldn't?! She failed to mention that she was going to find some random pieces of track hair around the salon and glue them in my hair, in the PEAK OF THIS HEAT -_-. To conclude this story, my hair turned out looking just as boring as the other customers that walked out that salon. If It wasn't for the colored tracks that I chose from the random pile of tracks I'm not sure what i would've done or felt. While I'm under the dryer the girl from the front desk comes and informs me that I need to pay now as she has to go and hands me the dreaded ticket. These people charged me $140 just to get my hair washed, blow dried, straightened, trimmed, and three tracks randomly glued in. To break it down, $50 for the wash, $10 for the conditioner, $30 for her to glue the tracks in, $25 for the cut, then another $20-25 for the style. THEN, she said "Oh, and that doesn't include the price of the hair that she used, which will be an additional $20" lol. I went upstairs to ask the stylist why she failed to mention that it would be extra and if she could remove the pieces and her response a very nasty "it would rip out your hair", or maybe it was that she wanted to rip my hair out. Nevertheless I just told her to keep the pieces in and I just paid the $140 because it seemed like the only way I would get close to looking decent. Funny thing is, her reasoning for charging so much was because they have "celebrities that come in and get their hair done there" not because they have exceptional service or use exceptional products, SMH. That should never be a reason to charge people who aren't celebrities high amounts of money because I damn sure do not have celebrity money. The end result was unsatisfying, boring, and lifeless hair. The most boring bob Ive ever seen in my life. I made sure to still tip the stylist and and the apprentice even though I felt neither deserved it but because that's usually what I do. However, if you are a person who loves to waste time and spend lots money on a boring hairstyle that you can do yourself or have a friend do then this is the place for you. You'll never see the likes of me in there though. read more

Time salon is an interesting coincidence of a name for this place seeing as one will need to spend lots of time here to get their hair done. Only come if you're willing to devote a good portion of your day to your hair. I've been in this place waiting for four hours at a time just to get my hair cut and flatironed. That being said, I've never walked out of any other salon with as much confidence as I've had walking out of time. The compliments don't stop coming. I don't need to tell people that I've gotten a haircut. They notice. Plus, at this Aveda Concept salon, everyone is super-nice and the decor of the salon is very artsy and has a brooklyn feel to it with its exposed brick walls. read more

The stylest gave me a consultion and to my supprise gave me exactly what I asked for, this is also the first time I was able to wear my hair out in the summer no matter how humid the weather gets. I never even made it into the shop. What a terrible experience over the phone. I called the shop to find out more information before booking and appointment, the young lady that answered the phone was sort of polite but sounded like she just rolled out of bed. The barber that I called to speak to would not even come to the phone and answer my questions. So I had to relay my message through the receptionist, which resulted in a 3rd party conversation and it was very irritating. I decide to ignore all of these terrible signs and request and appointment anyway. The receptionist put me on hold for 7 minutes. I was so annoyed that I hung up and called back. When finally got through, she gave me an appointment but told me that children are not allowed in the salon due to limited seating because I mentioned that I have a child that will be with me. She told me that was a "problem". I have never heard anything so disgusting and pretentious in my entire life! The people in this salon have a lot to learn about customer service. What a horrible experience. I have been going to Time Studio (formerly Time Salon) for over 11 years. I have always been happy with my hair when I left the salon. When I started attending this salon I had a perm and I transitioned from a perm to natural without doing a major cut of my hair. I have gotten natural hairstyles, press and curl, and I have colored my hair. I have never had an issues and my hair is healthy. I have tried other salons and have ended up with damaged hair. Okay. So I thought long and hard about posting this but, I realized there was no excuse for my hair to be like this. I was on an extensive search since August 2013 searching for a replica of my hair stylist in Charlotte, NC. Cleanliness, Start my hair within 15 minutes of the appt time, and can actually cut and style short hair. I commenced seeing Amanda 3/29/14. I was never truly satisfied with her work but at least I had enough hair to fix once I got home. Long story short, Prior to my last visit, I emailed the videos and pictures for the hairstyle (see Like a River Salon in Atlanta photos-- the owner post video of her techniques) I wanted prior to my appointment with Amanda. I was aware I needed to cut my hair shorter more so for definition not because it was to long. The hairdresser stated she knew how to do it. NO problem. Long story short the hairdresser scalped me and took to much hair off. The length is to short for my face shape. The cut is not a good cut regardless of the length. It's not layered nicely. I walked out with a heavy heart deeply unsatisfied with my hairstyle and stuck with hair so short I have to wait for it to grow back another two inches on the top and sides addition to my family members and friends stating it was an epic FAIL. A small patch of hair at my neckline was shed off also. Another hairstylist that did implement the hairstyle I wanted the month before executed the same hairstyle I wanted fabulously because I was receiving compliments from everyone asking who did my hair. I didn't return because she only do appts on Tues/Wed from 9-1 only (at work) and Saturday you need to be there by 430AM. Basically be prepared to spend 7-9 hours. Who wants to do that!!!! Amanda is very nice and I would recommend her if you have a medium bob and long hair for simple styling. I would not recommend her to cut and style short hair. The cleanliness and keeping appt times deserve 4 stars and it's also the major reason I kept returning even though I wasn't truly satisfied with my hair. I followed my hair colorist, Sarah Thomas, to Time Studio about a year ago when the salon where I used to see her closed. Sarah does a great job and I had her start cutting my hair as well, which is very convenient. It tends to be quite busy on Saturdays and it can be slow -- however I've noticed during my last couple of visits that they seem to be working on their time management and have seen some improvement. Fridays are not as busy and so are a little more relaxed and timely. Soon after becoming a new customer, I noticed a billing policy that concerned me and I expressed my concerns to the receptionist/front desk manager, Margaret. She responded to me in a very professional manner, but I still wrote a letter to the owners expressing my concerns. Even though they did not reply to me directly, I noticed at my next visit that they had amended their policy, and I was treated with as much friendliness as before.
