Nice to see Tim's American Cafe up and running again. The food is as good or better than it was. Unfortunately the son of the owner told us that they are closing again in December and reopening at the Bavarian Aid Society as their new kitchen as of January 1. Not sure how that's going to work since the Bavarian is a members only club and only members and their guests can make purchases there. Hope it works out. read more

This dive is based out of a house on 16th street in Altoona. It doesn't look like much when you pull up-- or even when you walk in. But they have some of the BEST food in town! My favorite is the Buffalo Chicken salad! It's huge! And so, soooo good!! My fiancé and I order from here often! It's super inexpensive too!! Hidden gem, worth the ride! Close to highway, only 4 minutes, but be ready to drive down thru a neighbourhood to find it. It's an old house on the corner. Old sign hanging, or you'd pass by. It has a cute bar, casual seating area like a diner, and it is everything that is said here. Berger was like it was homemade, and the chicken I had was juicy and generous portion. Price appropriate. Local folks. If I lived here, it would be a favorito spot. The negative was the grumpy worker, not our young server, but the guy who called him a moron for something he apparently did wrong. Newsflash: Customers don't need to hear that! No one said even hello when we walked in. Too busy dealing with some problem. He was bad energy and maybe just needs a few days off! So, Lee and I were on a road trip to Virginia, which took us down I-99. It was lunchtime, and we were hungry. To the Yelps! Yelp directed us to this place, which is located on a corner in a residential neighborhood. The entrance is around the side, and you are welcomed into a dimly-lit, dark place. That's OK, there are bars in Buffalo that have similar atmospheres. The waistaff was super chill, giving us time to go over the menu. It looked like they two things they're great for are Pittsburgh salads (which, for those who don't know, is a salad with the addition of fries. Who the hell knows why, but it works,) and cheesesteaks. I ordered the Buffalo chicken salad, and Lee ordered a cheesesteak. Both were enormous and delicious. The chicken salad was piled high with chicken fingers, deep fried with a really good sauce. Lee had a cheesesteak, and it was enormous, piled high with steak and cheese and peppers. We made the mistake of ordering a side of fries and gravy. This wasn't a mistake because they were bad, it was a mistake because there simply was too much food. We were pretty much stuffed for the rest of the day, well into the evening. Definitely a great place for food! read more

Small place, but all tables taken within fifteen Or so minutes of being open. Everyone told us to get the fish sandwich that they only serve on Friday. It was OK nothing memorable. Their chicken wings however are ridiculously delicious! The seasoning on them is something I have not had anywhere, and it works great. onion rings are THE BEST. Their hot wing sauce is not spicy at all, so go for the spiciest. Their ranch dressing and blue cheese are both perfection. Their stewed tomatoes on the side are surprisingly memorable and so yummy!!! I'm pretty sure their mac & cheese is Stouffers. They could spend some time cleaning up and definitely get rid of the dirty old curtains. There's a reason why you never see curtains in any big-name restaurants. They hold onto grease and grime and peoples food that accidentally gets sprayed about here and there. They should get rid of the wallpaper borders and other old stuff all over the place and just paint. But That's me. I look around and I see dirt and stuff in things that hasn't been washed in probably a year or two or three...Others might not notice that at all. read more

Tim's is a small but comfortable family restaurant serving Delicious American fare. The staff and customers were nice and very helpful. I was happily surprised. When I first pulled up and noticed that the restaurant is part of a corner house in the middle of a neighborhood, I wasn't sure what I was going to find. Upon walking in, it is a small cozy restaurant with a nice selection of food. I went with the 1/2 baby back ribs, and was surprised at the size and amount of food for the price. It's much easier to find than you think, and more than worth it! Huge portions, great service and the delicious smell of grease make Tim's a wonderful place! There are no fancy decorations and it's not a big place, so make sure you make a reservation (sounds weird when you see it, I know!). I grew up in the small town of Bedford, and we often made the trek to the "big city" of Altoona in order to shop somewhere other than our lowly Wal-Mart. I had never even heard of Tim's until this Christmas when my mom suggested we try it out. A coworker had suggested it to her, and I'm so happy he did! Food: Giant potions - I can't make it any clearer. I ordered the Steak Salad (which as any good Western PA girl knows was topped heavily with french fries). The lettuce was crisp, the steak was juicy and really could have been a meal on its own, and the fries were fresh-cut and delicious! I ate 1/3, at best, and was completely full. The rest turned out to be a yummy late-night treat. My brother had the sausage sandwhich, which was really the size of two, and my mom's cajun salmon (even after we all had several bites) had to be taken home. Service: Our server was extremely attentive and very sweet. She even took the time to talk to the little girl at the table next to ours who was excited to tell her everything she had received for Christmas. She was literally covering the entire restaurant, so this extra pause and attention was very kind! This place isn't going to win any awards for decor or ambience. But it also doesn't pretend to be anything it's not, something that goes a long way around here. To say this place is a case of 'don't judge a book by its cover' would be an understatement - we very nearly didn't even go in the door! But once inside, the people were all friendly, we were seated right away and the service was perfect. But the real story is the food - one look at the menu tells you this is pub fare, so we stuck with that. Everything came out fast and super hot - and tasted excellent! The ingredients were fresh and real and cooked perfectly ,with great seasoning and excellent flavor. Portions were huge, but that didn't cause inconsistent done-ness or any other issues. We were very surprised - reviews were good so we gave it a try, but the quality of the food and overall experience exceeded our expectations. My family and I were visiting in the Altoona area. My daughters and I had an afternoon to kill. We planned to go to the train museum and wanted to grab lunch first. So we fire up yelp on the trusty iPhone and took a chance on Tim's American Cafe. My daughter we a little uneasy opening the solid steel (no windows) door on the side of the building wondering --- "are we supposed to go in here?". We were quickly greeted by when we came in and found an open table. The menu offers a good choice of appetizers, salads and sandwiches / subs. The cheese fries appetizer was huge as were the portions for our salads. We heard from the people sitting at the table next to us that for dinner you will have to wait in line for over 30 minutes to get a table. I think they also do a big take out business. The food all tasted great so next year when we are back in the area we will definitely go back again. read more

Interesting place. First and foremost please keep in mind that this isn't a fine dining spot. This is an "I'm really hungry and want something reminiscent of homemade." The building is an old converted home with a small bar and limited seating. Call ahead and make reservations if you plan to dine in. Service was ok (not great). The food? Steamed shrimp was the highlight for me. As well as the beef gravy. Pepperoncini cheese balls were lackluster. The mashed potatoes taste of the dehydrated type. The green beans were flavorless. The fries were screaming for salt, though there were salt and pepper shakers on the table (but order the beef gravy instead to dip your fries). Crab cakes have plenty of crab but lack a much needed bite of old bay or some blend of seasoning. Plating is disappointing. Think hospital cafeteria in terms of the style of plates (mine had a large chip on it). The beer selection on tap is comprised of Bud, Miller, Yuengling and Reds Apple. The portion sizes are amazing but I guess I just made the wrong menu choices and should have stuck to something simpler. Would I go back? Yes. I want to try their sandwiches and western fries to be honest. read more
