Made it to Tom & Joe's during a day trip to Altoona on a Saturday morning, and ordered the #9 which is two eggs, home fries, choice of toast, and scrapple or corned beef hash. I chose scrapple since I've been wanting to try that for a while. The food was good diner food, and really hard to mess up. The scrapple had a very slight pork flavor, and was very soft texture wise, nothing like a sausage patty. I've had goetta in Cincinnati, and in my opinion the goetta is a notch better than scrapple. The wheat toast was very generously slathered with butter and went really well with the rest of the food. There was a few minutes wait to be seated, but nothing bad at 10 in the morning on a weekend. There was a good size crowd inside with every table occupied. (I was solo and sat at the counter) If you're a fan of diners, or a local place that serves good food, Tom & Joe's fits the bill. read more

We were on a road trip thru Pennsylvania and stayed in Altoona. I researched for a good breakfast spot and found Tom and Joe's. This is a family owned restaurant owned and run by the descendants of Tom n Joe. Kimberly was our waitress and was the granddaughter of one of them ( I can't recall which one). We both ordered a scrambled egg breakfast with a pancake. One of the best breakfasts we've had. Everything was cooked to perfection and so tasty. Kimberly was a crack up and so nice. She seemed to know most of the customers. We spoke to some of the other customers as they heard we were here from California. Check out this place if you're ever in Altoona. read more

This place is great. It's very obvious that it is family owned, everyone is nice and super friendly. In the time we were sitting there a bunch of what seemed like regulars came in. The servers knew what they wanted and most people did not need menus. I had the buffalo chicken omelet which was very yummy and the hubby had the mess. We both really enjoyed our food. Service was on point and we never had empty cups. If traveling through Altoona on way to/from Penn State, Tom and Joe's is a super alternative to fighting crowds at State College on football weekends. The food is excellent and provided quickly even with large crowds which is typically the case for breakfast meals. We've had one waitress who has mostly waited on us. She has been so fast @ bringing around extra servings of coffee & getting whatever is needed. She is consistently friendly and excellent at her job. Capable and friendly staff were quick to bring coffee and water to the table and engaged with us (but not too much!). The food arrived hot, well-plated, and generously portioned. If you're looking for eggs, bacon, pancakes, french toast, home fries, or a great sandwich with fries, you WILL NOT be disappointed. If you're on a mostly plant-based diet, you'll find few options, but there's nothing wrong with pancakes, oatmeal, and a side of fries. Just own it and no one will judge. My mom, Aunt, sister and I were making a trip to Altoona to go to Hobby Lobby so we decided to try this little place. Parking was easy. There is a decent sized lot right next to the building. It's much bigger than it looks. We entered the side door and were immediately seated. The menu is large. I chose the Buffalo chicken salad. There weren't a lot of healthy options, but there were a lot of yummy options! My Buffalo chicken salad had grilled chicken,lettuce, onion, a full piece of bacon, and I chose balsamic. My aunt had a turkey dinner which she enjoyed but said was a bit salty. My sister loved her lover and onions. And my mom's crab cakes were good. The servers were both pleasant. Refills took a bit, but it seemed every table in the restaurant was occupied. So it wasn't a big deal. I'd definitely eat here again. read more
