We were on a road trip thru Pennsylvania and stayed in Altoona. I researched for a good breakfast spot and found Tom and Joe's. This is a family owned restaurant owned and run by the descendants of Tom n Joe. Kimberly was our waitress and was the granddaughter of one of them ( I can't recall which one). We both ordered a scrambled egg breakfast with a pancake. One of the best breakfasts we've had. Everything was cooked to perfection and so tasty. Kimberly was a crack up and so nice. She seemed to know most of the customers. We spoke to some of the other customers as they heard we were here from California. Check out this place if you're ever in Altoona. read more

This place is great. It's very obvious that it is family owned, everyone is nice and super friendly. In the time we were sitting there a bunch of what seemed like regulars came in. If traveling through Altoona on way to/from Penn State, Tom and Joe's is a super alternative to fighting crowds at State College on football weekends. She has been so fast @ bringing around extra servings of coffee & getting whatever is needed. She is consistently friendly and excellent at her job. Classic American diner that puts a very subtle twist on traditional favorites. Our table of four was seated promptly although the restaurant was busy on Saturday around 11 am. Capable and friendly staff were quick to bring coffee and water to the table and engaged with us (but not too much!). The food arrived hot, well-plated, and generously portioned. If you're looking for eggs, bacon, pancakes, french toast, home fries, or a great sandwich with fries, you WILL NOT be disappointed. If you're on a mostly plant-based diet, you'll find few options, but there's nothing wrong with pancakes, oatmeal, and a side of fries. Just own it and no one will judge. Ample parking on the street or behind the restaurant, pay at the counter. The tables, booths, and decor are showing their age, but that's exactly the point--I wouldn't change a thing. My husband and I decided to take a date day! We started off with breakfast. We have never been here before and everyone tells us about it. So we decided to go! Mannnnnnn soooooooo glad I did! My mom, Aunt, sister and I were making a trip to Altoona to go to Hobby Lobby so we decided to try this little place. Parking was easy. There is a decent sized lot right next to the building. It's much bigger than it looks. We entered the side door and were immediately seated. The menu is large. I chose the Buffalo chicken salad. There weren't a lot of healthy options, but there were a lot of yummy options! My Buffalo chicken salad had grilled chicken,lettuce, onion, a full piece of bacon, and I chose balsamic. My aunt had a turkey dinner which she enjoyed but said was a bit salty. My sister loved her lover and onions. And my mom's crab cakes were good. The servers were both pleasant. Refills took a bit, but it seemed every table in the restaurant was occupied. So it wasn't a big deal. I'd definitely eat here again. read more
