Was here before and had better memories than experience. While the restaurant is comfortable the service was less than average and so was the food. The bread that was brought out before the meal was dry and only saved by the cinnamon butter. Had stuffed pork chops, mashed potatoes and coleslaw. Nothing stood out! Mashed potatoes were okay. Pork chop was dry and the stuffing was not exciting. Usually there is something that is really enjoyable; not today. Bill only came to $40.00 for two of us but it wasn't worth the drive. read more

The Dream Restaurant is a cozy restaurant. The menu is also what I would describe as cozy with selections such as the turkey dinner and the meatloaf dinner. Warm bread was served prior to our meal. I had the patty melt which was very good. The fries were excellent and appeared to have been toasted. We were a party of five and the server was genial and attentive. Traditional American food served in hearty portions at reasonable prices. Large dining areas with a display case of pastries and pies that are available for purchase. Bakery purchases can either be taken away or ordered for consumption on site. Baked goods are quite good as they are baked daily and on-site. It's definitely a step above diner food, and the service is good. The entire ambiance heartens back to a time when life in America moved at a slower pace, and I find this aspect of nostalgia rather appealing. read more

We always go for breakfast. We walk, love having places in the borough to walk to (lots of restaurants, but they all have select, slim hours). The food is very good. We always get omelets and toast. Bread seems homemade. Service is always good. Waitresses are pleasant and attentive. Coffee is hot and strong. The restaurant is very clean and the building is well maintained and you always sit in a new section it seems like you're eating somewhere new each time. read more

Stopped at the The Dream Restaurant for lunch, this is an update form the last time that I have been at the restaurant. Visiting for the second time, the restaurant has defiantly redeemed itself. This time I had the Ruben that was on the menu. This was a great sandwich. With this I promised that I would update my previous review when I was returning to the restaurant. I am going to include the picture for the previous visit to the restaurant. Because so far my favorites from the restaurant have been the Ruben and The House Cesar Salad. Great job. I really wanted to like this place. So let's start from the beginning. We were running to the store in holidaysburg so we did a quick check for restaurants. The name is cute and the pics looked cute so off we went. First off, the place is very clean. Sometimes booths are gross with dust around the trim. I was impressed. None of that here. It's very large and had a good number of people. We started with zucchini and cauli apps. The zucchini was great as was the cauli. But the cauli had cheese that came with it which wasn't edible. It had a big gross layer of dry cheese over the top. I ordered the grilled cheese with a slice of Tomato and fries. The bread tasted a bit off and something about the tomato wasn't quite right. The fries were ok. My mom and sister had liver and it was good. But my aunt had the Chesapeake chicken which ended up not being edible. She actually said it was the worst meal she had in her life. It was drowned in Alfredo. And didn't look appetizing at all. The peas and onions which she and my mom got were both cold. The server was adequate. Not the best, not the worst. But also not friendly at all. Something smelled really good when walking through. Maybe hot turkey and gravy sandwich? The bakery looked amazing. I didn't try anything there, but if the baked items were anywhere near as good as they looked, they would be fantastic! I forgot to take pictures. I normally Do. I'd say try this place, but ask maybe what your server likes there and stick with a favorite. Or check other reviews for things that tasted good. read more

Unfortunately, there are numerous issues with this restaurant, including the building, food, and staff. Sweet Tea - Nicely sweetened, but the tea itself was unbearably strong. Chicken Quesadilla - Barely warm with unmelted cheese and large chunks of tomatoes and chicken unevenly spread throughout. Probably the most poorly made quesadilla I've ever tried to consume. It was, however, accompanied by generous amounts of salsa and sour cream. I realize the Dream is not a Mexican restaurant; don't list food on the menu that can't be prepared properly. Boston Cream Pie w/ Hot Fudge - Cake was dry with way too much filling between layers. Hot fudge is normally put on icecream, hence very oily to prevent hardening. It absolutely didn't work well with this cake. Chocolate ganache is the proper topping for Boston Cream Pie. If management considers this dessert "award-winning" as the menu states, they are quite ignorant of confectionary arts. Overall: This is a dying restaurant. Admittedly, without inside knowledge, it's mostly speculation on my part. While the servers were friendly they were also disorganized. A server took the drink orders and then a different server came to take our drink orders. I guess they worked it out since only the second one came back. Many of the customers are elderly and dine here by habit not tastes. The food was poorly prepared by untrained, underpaid, or micromanaged kitchen staff. Furthermore, the menu is far too long for even trained cooks to manage properly. The decor is thoroughly outdated and tacky. This restaurant is a huge disappointment and a disservice to the community. I have no intentions of returning. read more

I have eaten at The Dream many times over the past year and a half. The food is always very good. On my last visit I had a meal that included 2 sides. I ordered a salad and mashed potatoes as my 2 sides. Every visit, until my recent one, the salad was included with the meal as a side. When I received my check I was charged an up-charge for the salad. When I placed the order the waitress didn't inform me of the up-charge for a salad as the waitress normally does. I am aware that some items on their menu incur up-charges and I have knowingly ordered those items. I feel the waitress should have informed me of the up-charge for the salad. Then it would be my choice to order a salad or an item that didn't incur an up-charge. read more

Bought an apple pie for a dinner dessert. They put in a box and handed it to me. There pies were to die for in the past. I took it home and got it out and served the pie. How embarrassed to discover the crust was not done and the apples looked like they were dehydrated, There was no sugar or any of the normal ingredients inside the pie. I took it back the next day and the manager gave me my money back but would not admit there was a problem with the pie. I looked in the pie case and there were more of the same pies and I informed her of the problem pies. She would not look or remove the pies. We bought our pies there for the holidays and other family functions. We will not eat another meal or purchase pastries there again So beware of the pies! read more

I have always loved the homemade food and the bakery at the Dream. Both have changed drastically! The service is mediocre at best. I haven't had a correct order in my last three visits. The wait time is crazy. By the time the order that was missing arrived everything else was cold. The bakery is usually out of just about everything on the menu. My husband and I had breakfast there on Saturday August 5th while visiting Altoona, PA. It wasn't busy and the service was quick. The Dream has good food and I have always supported them especially because I used to work there, but I won't be returning after my last experience. About a week ago, my family (there were 5 adults and 2 kids) decided to eat at The Dream. We were seated in a section with 3 other tables of people and after 15 minutes of no service and no aknowledgment at all, we told the manager that we had not been addressed yet. After about 5 more minutes we got up and left and I won't be returning. It is unacceptable to not even be aknowledged after 20 minutes, especially after talking to the manager. They were not busy and the manager or hostess is fully capable to at least get drinks (I should know, I used to get drinks as a hostess if things were busy). The manager didn't say anything to us as we left either, very unprofessional if you ask me. read more

Nothing particularly exciting. The food is well, boring. Baked fish. Simple homestyle favorites. Sides are uninspired -- baked potatoes, coleslaw, applesauce. Except they charge you more for veggies. You know, the cut-up frozen kind. Yeah, not cool in my book. So, really 2 stars in terms of taste. But an extra star for the sweets. Because sweets is the best part of any meal. If you have any taste-buds left you will not enjoy it. If you are very old and do not mind food from a can that was microwaved to room temp., this restaurant is right for you! The quantities are generous but the taste is generally sweetish and do not resemble any of the flavours you would expect from your dish. Upon arriving.. you can't help but notice the rooms and the crazy murals and decorations. Someone spent some serious time making this place appear interesting. But lets get to the real part of the review... The Food. I was really impressed with the healthy choices on the menu as well as the selection of everything else offered. I got the blackened Tilapia and Red potato's and found it to be really good. I also had a bowl of Ham and Lentil soup that was extremely well flavored. Beautiful, quaint, quiet, Americana restaurant nestled in the mid-Pennsylvania mountains. The only reason I can't give The Dream a five star rating is because I only had one breakfast there as we were passing through the area, so I can't speak to the lunch or dinner menu items. My meal was very good, ample and reasonably priced. Don't expect a fancy menu but do expect a good home style cooked meal. The ambiance inside alone is worth your patronage. You are probably familiar with the Cracker Barrel restaurants as a comparison so the best way I can describe The Dream is to say that the CB is a really lame imitation of The Dream. Of course The Dream is only a fraction of the size of a CB. The Dream is the real deal. I'm sure I'll be back on a fall foliage tour. read more

I come here with my four best friends and my one besties' daughter. So there was 6 of us and we usually order the same thing. We got there and our server told us the specials for the day and got our drinks. We sat and talked and then hurried and made our choices. She brought out the salads and bread and we just continued to talk. It seemed to take a little longer that night, but no big deal to me or anyone else. Our food finally came out and some of us got refills. I got chicken parm, it was good and there is a lot to it. Three of my friends got the turkey dinner, loved it, like always. My friend' s daughter got the kids chicken and fries. Lastly my other friend is in town from South Dakota, so she had a late lunch so she ordered two pieces of pies to try. She said the coconut creme was good and the cheesecake was ok, but the strawberries on it were mushy. Overall everything was good and we had a great time catching up. Our server gave us our space and came over when we needed something. I don't come here much because I live on the other side of town, but when I do come to meet up with my girls I always enjoy it. read more
