So, ummmm, no. A member of a local FB food group commented about visiting Iowa and having taco pizza at Happy Joe's and wanted something like that here in KC. Growing up in Iowa, I knew what he was talking about and suggested Casey's, but quite a few people suggested Tim's. Being I was in the area I figured let's do it! I love taco pizza and if it compares with Happy Joe's I am going to be a happy Billie! Let's start with the salad bar. The glass is hard to see through. So much so I had to lean down and peak under the glass to see what was available. The options were very limited, especially considering they offer an all you can eat salad bar. The dressings were not labeled. The best I could tell with the horrible view was they had 5 things of ranch and one French. Ingredients did seem to be fresh... Out of a bag. Seriously, chopping lettuce isn't that hard! I was eating my salad as the kids played video games. A couple at another table watched a video with the volume up high of some crazy right wing conspiracy stuff. Definitively made for an uncomfortable time. One in our group ordered a meatball sub. It came out alone. I asked about our pizza and the guy seemed bothered that I questioned it not coming and said he would bring it when it was ready. Call me odd, but it would be nice to get the entire meal at once. I tried the sub and it was just OK. The meatballs were really lacking in seasoning. The sauce nothing special. It came with chips and a pickle. It was close to ten minutes later when the pizza arrived. Again call me odd, but if bringing things out separately, a minute, maybe two would be acceptable. Anyhow, time to dive into this much recommend taco pizza! It looked promising, tons of toppings!. It really fell short. The crust tasted like a gluton free crust and had a burnt taste although didn't look burnt. The most flavorful thing on the pizza was the refried beans. Everything else was bland. The meat a very mild sausage, the chips were only noticeable because of the crunch, there was lettuce, probably from a bag too, very lacking in sauce if any at all, the accompanying taco sauce didn't even add flavor. The worst taco pizza I have ever tasted. The Sprite one of the kids ordered was all carbonation. I can't really fault the restaurant on this, although it is obvious when syrup runs out, because the youngster didn't want to take it back for another. A ten inch pizza was around $15. For the same price we could have enjoyed a fantastic large taco pizza from Casey's. Service was just OK. Not friendly, not rude. The place is outdated. Not in a divey way, but in a we don't want to spend money to replace the decor we bought in the 1980's way. How this place is recommended by many people for the taco pizza is beyond me. How anyone eats pizza of any kind on the horrible crust is beyond me. I will now be hesitant before trusting recommendations from the food group again. Meh service and cheap bland ingredients. Our extended family goes to Tim's about once a year for a Pizza/Birthday get together. We have 4 January Birthday's and tonight was our annual January bday party. This year, we all go the individual pizza's and sodas. I got the Hawaiian Pizza. The size was right for a single serving. It was good, but nothing remarkable. Tim's shreds it's Canadian bacon. The onion and green pepper slices were big and I would have liked to have more pineapple on the pizza. I think on my 10" pizza there were maybe 4 pineapple. Tim's serves coke products and has a selection of 15 or so bottled beers. Our family group was able to take up some of the long tables in the main dining room, which is a first for us. There was TV in the corner, and the noise level was good for conversation. We were there about 2 hours. People like Tim's Pizza, and I can understand why. It's a mom & pop operation, no frills, and a relaxed atmosphere. The Pizza is OK, not the best Pizza I've ever eaten, but tasty. I would have appreciated a refill on my Diet Coke, but once our Pizza's were brought out to us, we did not have anyone come to check to see if the food was to our liking or refill our beverages. The place is also showing it's age and could do with some decor update. All in all our extended family likes Tim's Pizza and will probably keep going back. read more

Great place!! I know some people think it's a bit pricey but it's really not. The amount of food you get is insane! The pizzas are huge. My husband and I had to take the leftovers home and ate on them for 2 days. He loved the pepperoni and sausage pizza while I liked the vegetarian one I Custom ordered. I suppose my only complaint is the delivery fee. It seems a little high to me since there's a minimum delivery order. The restaurant was clean with plenty of seating. The salad bar was pretty standard. The employees were nice and very helpful. There's a large parking lot which is helpful with big groups after church. We'll definitely go again and bring out of town friends and family to try it. I can see why Tim's is an Independence treasure. read more

I can't possibly know how many birthdays, mine and innumerable others, I've celebrated at Tim's. Must be several dozen. So I was surprised while driving down 40 Highway during a relatively rare excursion into that part of Independence to realize that not only was Tim's still kicking, but that I had somehow completely forgotten it had ever existed, let alone that it had been one of a handful of go-to celebration destinations. It had to have been at least 20 years since my last visit, but seeing the familiar strip mall façade immediately brought to mind memories of crispy thin crust piled to the max with awesome toppings. I wondered if it was still like that, still as good as my unrefined tween-to-teen self had thought. Stomach growling, I was determined to find out then and there. Never mind that it was a dreary Monday evening and I technically had other things to do. I had to do this RIGHT NOW. Stepping into the restaurant was like walking back in time. I don't think it has changed an iota. I even recognized most of the stuff on the walls--newspaper articles, sports memorabilia, etc. I was surprised to learn it was cash-only (although I wouldn't have been if I'd checked yelp!) and was inconvenienced a bit by the need to visit the ATM at the mildly shady nearby convenience store. Insofar as that constitutes a complaint, it's the only one I have. An ATM in the restaurant would've been nice. Anyway, I got the smallest pizza on offer, a ten-inch affair, outfitted as a House Special (pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, beef, onion, green pepper) and it wasn't as good as I remembered. It was actually *better*. Completely loaded down with awesome, fresh toppings. Delicious. Crispy, thin crust superficially resembling St. Louis style but with more chew and body. Light but adequate sauce. No creepy, processed meat pellets here. The beef is clearly identifiable as cooked ground beef. Same with the sausage. Veggies are plentiful and fresh. I'm only a little ashamed to admit that I ate the entire damn thing right there. Thanks to Tim's for keeping it real, and real good, all these years. read more

This is great pizza. Tim's is a great local place with some unique flare on their largely traditional pizza menu. The shredded Canadian bacon is awesome. It adds an interesting texture to the pizza that is already packed with flavor from the freshness of the other ingredients. I highly recommend adding the Canadian bacon to whichever pizza you select. The CB is not big pieces like you typically get. They're small bits of CB sprinkled over the top. You won't find another pizza like it. I don't even like canadian bacon pizza's. Beauty is only crust deep... I know with with pizza everyone has their own unique preferences. Based on local reviews, Tim's is obviously a well liked local joint. While briefly in town for a sporting event tonight, we chose pizza for our evening meal after the 3 hr drive. Rated as the best pizza in the area, we decided to give it a try. My impressions: Mom and pop shop. My kind of place. Three cheese pizza ordered for the kids. Cheese was loaded, stretches out as you lift from the pan. I tried a small slice and it was good. Chewy crust lots of cheese. A sign of good things to come I thought. I did think it could've used more sauce though. Combo pizza- when it arrived at our table about 10 mins after the cheese pizza, I was excited. The medium pie looked delicious. Loaded with toppings. My mouth watered as I selected my first slice. I sprinkled a little red pepper and took my first bite. Not quite what I expected... Every bite was crunchy. As I got further into it I started to notice a slightly burnt taste. As I flipped up each slice, I found a slight burnt tinge on the whole underside of the pizza. It was also a bit dry. We tried to fix by dipping in some pizza sauce which they charged us an extra $.50 for. Onto the second slice. I didn't get too much flavor from the first slice, but maybe I was distracted by the dry slightly burnt crust. Unfortunately it was a repeat of the first slice. No flavor, no sauce, too much crunch and slightly burnt. The guy who took our order up front had walked by and I asked him if the crust is supposed to be that burnt. His answer was "yes" it's supposed to be that way. I said "really like this? (As I showed him the bottom side of the pizza) " Again he confirmed. I showed him the cheese pizza and said this one isn't like that. His response was that since it was for the kids they took it out much earlier. I guess they found out that kids don't like crunchy burnt pizzas as much as adults do??? For the first time ever my wife and I left over 3/4 of a medium pizza uneaten. Maybe overnight it will soften up and be more palatable. In summary, the pizzas look delicious. But looks can be deceiving and again I know everyone has their individual preferences, and this is just mine. Take from it what you will. I'm glad we did because Tim's makes an old fashioned pizza loaded with toppings and baked in a manner that suggests a quality pizza oven. We ordered an All Meats pizza with ground beef, sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon and polish sausage. It was good and Hubby & I would go there again, if we were in the neighborhood. But, even though it was a good solid pizza, it doesn't rival the very best pizzas I've had over the years. Cashier was extremely rude when I asked for my order to go -- rolling her eyes, ripping up the guest check on which she was writing, only to repeat the process of writing the same order on a new guest check, adding "to-go." Oh a whim and owing to hunger pains, Mr. C and I decided to try Tim's Pizza. We had once stopped by, but left because they only accept cash or checks. Kind of strange for the era we are living in. So, we figured it would probably be good if people are still willing to go to the ATM prior to visiting Tim's. So we did just that. Got some cash, tried some Tim's. And boy were we beyond disappointed!!!! Aghast really! How can people like this stuff? We received a burnt pie loaded with too much cheese, very little pizza sauce, and an over abundance of onions, green peppers, olives and all the other veggie pizza fixings. And then they wanted to charge us for a little thing of extra marinara sauce. I do believe Mr. C told them that if there had been any sauce on the pizza in the first place, he wouldn't have had to order extra. The only thing "cooked" on the pizza was the cheese, the pie, like I said was burnt. We ordered the salad bar as well, but guess what? No tomatoes on it either. I really do believe that one of the essentials for a pizza place is tomatoes... in any form. Wilted lettuce, even after I asked before hand if the lettuce had been on there all day. Why can't people put spinach on salad bars? Even Subway has the option for their sandwiches now! The only good thing about Tim's was the beer and that's because they don't make it there. I'm sure they would screw that up too. This pizza is for those who have been going there for 20 years. I think it is for those who just don't get out much and like familiarity. It is by far some of the worst pizza on the Planet. Mr. C doesn't care for Funhouse Pizza much, but he concurred that we should have just gone there instead. So, do yourself a favor, just skip Tim's. Go down to the Hy-Vee, get a 5-Cheese pizza from the Italian Express and add your own fixings at home. You will save some money and enjoy a nice quiet time with a movie. Love it, but be advised that they DO NOT take credit, debit or checks. Not a big deal - they do have an ATM - but it's good to know up front. Their pizza is slightly more expensive than Pizza Hut or Papa John's, but then again, a Porsche costs a little more than a Yugo. To me, their pizzas have a simple formula: take a great pizza crust, ladle on a decent amount of sauce, then put on more toppings than you could expect the crust to hold. WOW! Best pizza ever! Tim's is an absolutely delicious find tucked away in an inline shopping center off 40 Highway in Independence. The toppings are fresh, bountiful, and delicious! If you like veggies on your pizza, they are great here, because they come out still crunchy and not soggy like most places. NO - they don't have $10 large pizzas like the national chains, but you certainly get what you pay for! Two of us normally go and split a small, but depending on your appetite, it could differ for you. One word of caution - they only accept cash, so be sure to hit the ATM on your way in. This is my new favorite place for pizza. I had been hesitant about going into the place because the outside makes it look like a stripmall dive bar. On going in, you'll see it isn't. It's very family friendly. (I'm not, so I'm glad I got my order to go.) If you choose to eat at the joint, you'll order at the front order window inside and just past the video game machines and then eat with your friends, family, group. I didn't do that. I ordered take out. I suggest calling in ahead of time and placing your order and picking up if you want take out. The wait wasn't too long but standing/sitting around waiting wasn't a great experience. Still, it was worth it. I got the pizza home and dug into it. Pretty standard crust and sauce. The cheese was good, thick and stringy so you'll probably not need to get extra cheese. The other toppings were good and plentiful. I had a pepperoni and jalapeno topped pizza and was blown away by the good amount of jalapeno they put on there. I'll probably ask for extra sauce the next time I order from here The price for the large pizza with two toppings was reasonable, just under $20. For me, Tim's is the best pizza in town. I grew up in Raytown eating Happy Joe's at Blue Ridge Mall. One of the owners (or cooks?) from Happy Joe's owns Tim's, and they carry on the tradition of finely chopping their Canadian bacon, and it goes SO WELL with sauerkraut! I know, I know, but you have to try it. I've loved that Canadian bacon and sauerkraut special since I was a kid. Another great topping is their sirloin ground beef. I don't know if they season it with something special, or if it's just extremely high quality beef, but it is delicious, and I usually don't care for ground beef on pizza. Grew up eating here from time to time. Recently ate there and it was just as good as I could have ever remembered. Happened to read some bad reviews... these would be like complaining at Arthur Bryant's that the meat was fatty, the floor was greasy, or the BBQ sauce was gritty. I love the fact that your pizzas don't always come out at the same time, you have to use cash or check, the salad bar sucks, and most of all, the Canadian bacon is shredded and addicting. It's Tim's pizza, it's one of the best in town, but it's a family pizza joint that didn't change its processes or food with the tides. It's the Gates, Arthur Bryant's, of Pizza, not the Q39 of pizza. Tim's is the best pizza for a non-chain business. What I love most about Tim's is their "Super" pizza. It has everything on it. But the best is the fresh peppers, onions and olives on top. They haven't been baked and aren't soggy. It gives the pizza a wonderful fresh crunch to it. I'm a thin crust person but Tim's crust makes me leave that behind. Food was very good!!! Ordered 3 pizza's, including the "famous" taco pizza. Daughter ordered a sandwich, also was good. Now the weird thing happened when I asked for some Ranch dressing for her to put on her sandwich. They charged a $1; I figured it would be quite a bit; it wasn't. A 2 oz souffle cup is what I got. Then, since we had ordered a 3 different pizza's for us all to try, we had some left over. I went to the counter to ask for a couple boxes and was told they are $.51 each with tax. For a box? Do you charge your to go customers $.50 more for each pizza? I was shocked. I would go back for the food, but I doubt we do since its the odd things that they charged for. Again, the food I thought was very good. 9-19-16, So someone sent me a "compliment" saying that they do not charge for a to go box. I didn't not overhear any conversation. I was told that it would be $1.02 for 2 to go boxes. I gave the young man the money and he rang it in the register. The food was good and maybe it was a fluke, I don't know. There are several things to comment on about Tim's Pizza. First is that the Pizza is excellent. Second is that they only take CASH or CHECK so bring your dollars and forget the plastic. The crust has a great crispy chew to it that does not breakdown while your eat it. Moreover and perhaps the best thing about the crust is when it is reheated the next day it still tastes excellent. We have been to Tim's no shot of once a month for the past 5 years. It is a testament to the fact when pizza is done right it is worth the indulgence from time to time. I grew up in KC and as a kid I used to go to Happy Joe's Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor all the time. Whether it was with a sports team, for a birthday party, or just the family it seems like one way or another we'd regularly end up there for pizza. I've told a few people about it over the years and while I knew the one I used to frequent (95th and Quivera) had been closed for over 25 years I didn't know if there were any others in the area, or what the deal was so I decided to do some searching. I saw it was in fact a chain but there weren't any in the KC area. However, I did find a blog talking about this place in Independence that was owned by the old GM for Happy Joe's, and that they were making pies the way HJ's did. Naturally when I found myself in the KC area over the holidays I dragged my GF out to Tim's Pizza so we could check it out. I used to just order the pepperoni pie back in the day so we went with one of those. I've heard that people's taste buds change about every 7 years or so, and since it had been more than 25 years since I had an HJ's pizza it's not too shocking that it didn't taste EXACTLY how I remembered. Luckily it did still taste pretty damn good. The sauce wasn't as sweet as I remembered, but the crust was just as crispy and the pepperoni was piled several layers deep as it was in the old days. There seemed to be a a touch too much cheese for my current tastes, but all in all it was a good pizza. We had a couple of Boulevard brews, which they didn't have back when I was a kid, and I guess I was too young to drink them if they did. The place was pretty dead when we went, middle of the afternoon, but the owner Tim was really nice. No, I didn't bore him with my history, I figure he's heard all that plenty of times before.
