I grew up in KC and as a kid I used to go to Happy Joe's Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor all the time. Whether it was with a sports team, for a birthday party, or just the family it seems like one way or another we'd regularly end up there for pizza. I've told a few people about it over the years and while I knew the one I used to frequent (95th and Quivera) had been closed for over 25 years I didn't know if there were any others in the area, or what the deal was so I decided to do some searching. I saw it was in fact a chain but there weren't any in the KC area. However, I did find a blog talking about this place in Independence that was owned by the old GM for Happy Joe's, and that they were making pies the way HJ's did. Naturally when I found myself in the KC area over the holidays I dragged my GF out to Tim's Pizza so we could check it out. I used to just order the pepperoni pie back in the day so we went with one of those. I've heard that people's taste buds change about every 7 years or so, and since it had been more than 25 years since I had an HJ's pizza it's not too shocking that it didn't taste EXACTLY how I remembered. Luckily it did still taste pretty damn good. The sauce wasn't as sweet as I remembered, but the crust was just as crispy and the pepperoni was piled several layers deep as it was in the old days. There seemed to be a a touch too much cheese for my current tastes, but all in all it was a good pizza. We had a couple of Boulevard brews, which they didn't have back when I was a kid, and I guess I was too young to drink them if they did. The place was pretty dead when we went, middle of the afternoon, but the owner Tim was really nice. No, I didn't bore him with my history, I figure he's heard all that plenty of times before. Bottom line, I recommend Tim's Pizza, regardless of your pizza pedigree! read more

Tim's pizza is a staple food. :-) Best pizza I have ever tasted and the staff is super friendly. They remember regular customers, take call-ahead orders, and keep the place clean and nice. A couple of old-style stand-up video games are kept in the lobby to entertain kids and adults alike. This is a family owned and run business and they do not accepted credit cards, it's also a little more than you would pay for a pizza at the big chain stores, but it is not a lot more and is definitely worth the price. I think Tim's Pizza was my first experience with pizza that wasn't frozen or from one of the big chain pizza places. But ever since my family first had it, it quickly became my favorite pizza shop. Welcome to Tim's Pizza...a tiny little hole in the wall restaurant hidden within the city of independence...you may miss it driving past, but keep your eyes peeled, because if you spot it, you'll have caught glimpse of a truly wonderful treasure! My parents took me here often as a kid, and it's only gotten better with age. Not only the age of the business, but my age specifically as I've grown up...when you're a kid, you just think "oh..this is a really tasty pizza!" and then go back to whatever you were doing...but as an adult with a more developed palate, an appreciation for a well kept facility, and the admiration and respect for the traditional concept of a family owned business...you begin to realize how amazing this place really is! Tim's has been open for almost 30 years...quite a time for a family owned business to prosper now-days. And the reason for its success, lies within in its history, and it's food...Tim and Steve are incredibly talented people and businessmen, who shared a dream of a good quality product, without all the red tape bureaucracy. Tim's is simple yes...they don't accept cards, (which is a bit of a shame I admit) and their decor is old fashioned...but they don't need to be fancy or modern, their product is fire. With a Tim's pizza, you can expect 3 things...good crust, good sauce, and a TON of ultra fresh toppings...I always order their "Super"...which is basically a supreme, with all the fixin's...Their portions are great, the sauce is the perfect balance of tangy, sweet, smokey, and seasoned, and their crust is always cooked to perfection. A couple tips when going: 1.You MUST try their Canadian bacon... Really...you have to...it's mandatory...Even if you generally don't like Canadian bacon (which is pretty much me in a nutshell) try it...it will blow your mind! It's not your typical huge slices of Canadian bacon like at Papa Murphy's, or the little strips of Canadian bacon you'd get at Papa Johns, no...it's seasoned and cured finely shredded ham that will add a huge kick of flavour to whatever pizza you order! 2.Make SURE you have cash on you...or you shan't receive your pizza. As a way to cut costs, they haven't upgraded their POS to accept credit/debit...however, they still take check, or cash...it's not a big deal because of the quality of product you're getting, but it would be a nice thing to have eventually. 3.Keep some quarters handy. They've got your traditional Ms.Pac-man/Galaga arcade machine up and running, and there's nothing better to do than play a couple rounds while waiting for your pizza to be ready. (Protip: when inserting the quarters, before pressing start...move the joystick "up 3 times, down 3 times" and move the joystick "left right, left right, left" to play the original pacman...it's a lot of fun, and is uncommonly known to most people!) But let me end the review with this... Businesses like Tim's are becoming harder and harder to find... So many restaurants have gone the corporate route, and sacrificed quality, for modernization and gimmicks...This is a solid place with an excellent product, and Tim and Steve should be proud of themselves for making such a wonderful contribution to the townsfolk here in the area! So please, if you're driving along 40 highway, and you're as hungry as a starving bear, do yourself a favour and grab a bite to eat from the best pizza place you'll ever try. read more

Dear Tim's Pizza- I was so disappointed in the pizzas that I ordered. I ordered 2 medium, 1 with pepperoni and 1 with sausage. Both pizza crusts were so hard they were very hard to eat. The crust scraped the roof of my mouth and was painful. The ingredients took up only about 1/3 of the pizza. From the outside crust of both pizzas about 1/2 way in, there was only sauce. It was sad. each pizza was more than $15. They were expensive and not worth the $$. Had you had the toppings to the very edge and a decent crust, I would not have minded paying so much. I was told that you take free pizzas out to shut in people for free. That is a nice gesture. But maybe make the pizzas worth what you charge and ask people to chip in on the pizzas that you give away. That way your cost per pizza would remain the same or go down based on the generosity of those who buy your food. In conclusion, always remember that there are people like me who will at least tell you what their complaint is so you have a chance to fix it. But also know that I'm not the only one with a complaint and they may just go somewhere else when they order pizza next time. Good luck! read more

Very disappointed! Horrible entry way, no credit cards accepted, dirty tables, worst service I have ever experienced. Never came to clean tables like they said. First let me start off by saying, Tim's is not your "normal" pizza place. If you're looking for authentic Brooklyn style pizza, this is not your place. If you're looking for fancy smancy wood-fired brick oven pizza, this is not your place. If you go to Tim's expecting anything other than an American-ized, loaded with REAL toppings pizza then you will be disappointed. Like many, I was raised on Tim's, it's an Independence icon. The pizza hasn't changed since I was a kid, and either has the interior, but that's okay, it's nostalgic! The pizza alone is worth 5 stars, the crust is like cracker-y on the outside but chewy on the inside, the sauce is tangy and goes perfectly with the salty cheese. The best part is that the toppings are real! The hamburger is not uniformed shaped turd-like nuggets like at many pizza chains. And try the Canadian bacon it's a must! read more

I have been going to Tim's since I was 6 years old and it hasn't changed much since. Which is a great thing! The pizza is great but the crust is what makes it amazing! Highly recommend the All Meat pizza as it is pulled high with delicious toppings. Very family friendly place and they have a viewing window where the kids can watch them make the pizzas. There is such a thing as "too much of a good thing". I had so many green olives, banana peppers and sausage, I thought I would gag. It was more like a green olive and banana pepper pie with a bottom crust that was just so-so. Also, the topping isn't cooked in with the pizza...strange. Plus, they don't take plastic. Came to what we thought would be a nice alternative to the big franchise stores....WRONG. Arrived at 7:30pm with my family of 3 plus my 3 nieces. Waited approximately the appropriate time for the adults pizza, was told a cheese pizza for 2 of the kids would be out in 10 to 15? WTH? AND the last pizza for the kids didnt even get ordered, again WTH? We were informed that it was our fault that we in fact had not ordered it as he had "read it back to us" He did and both my wife and I heard the correct order read back. The cheese pizza finally arrived after an addition 30 min since they added other toppings and had to remake. The 3rd pie arrived at 10 till 9. As we had waited till it arrived to start eating the first 1 I mentioned it was now cold. The teenaged public relations genius told me at least the last one wasn't. By 9 o'clock at least 4 of the Donald Trump wannabes were looking at us through the window to the kitchen like we were holding them up getting outa there. If all of the BSing and goofing off hadn't of happened and they had done the job they were paid to do maybe we wouldn't of intruded on the epic night of video games they had planned. read more

Whoa!! How does he remember all that? Tim's has a nice mix of tables and booths, and cool art on the walls, and usually a game on the TV. Sometimes the noise level can get a little high, but it's usually not bad. There are a few game machines as you come in the door. My family and I made a special trip on July 10, 2010 to get pizza for lunch at Tim's Pizza. We basically live completely on the other side of the Kansas City metro area and it takes us about 35-45 minutes to get there. It was worth it. As Matt F. said in his review, the Canadian bacon is simply awesome! Great thin, crispy crust and tangy, not-too-sweet sauce. We had a CB with pineapple and a sausage with mushrooms. Both pizzas were excellent. We have a pizza restaurant much closer to us that serves a similar type of pizza, but both my wife and I agreed that Tim's still does it just a little better. If you are familiar with the old Happy Joe's Pizza & Ice Cream family restaurants, the pizza here is basically a knock-off of that pizza - in a very good way. read more

After reading the reviews I was ready to eat some pizza that would knock my socks off but Tim's just did not deliver. The guy working the cashier/taking orders was just down right not friendly, border line rude. Not very inviting and sort of set the tone for our time there, also the interior was dated and a lot of dirty tables so finding a clean place to sit was a challenge. The salad bar was weak with very few options, I'd skip it unless your really hard up for some sub-par salad fixings. The pizza was piled high with toppings but very little red sauce, overall it was good but Fun House is better and at least at Fun House they don't make you feel like you ruined their day by walking in the front door. read more

Ahhh, review #500. I really wanted #500 to be special. And specifically, I wanted #500 to be Kansas City. There in lies a problem...I've been traveling a lot this fall, even for me. When I am home, I want to be HOME, not out...so I haven't been visiting many new places around KC lately. I figured Tim's was as good an opportunity as any to hit my 500th review. So here's what's up, and I have to preface every pizza review with this - I grew up in Chicago, and I love Chicago pizza. Even mediocre Chicago pizza is great. Even thin crust Chicago style pizza (it exists) is great. I am a bit of a pizza snob. Very few pizzas in KC have made me happy - Minsky's, Waldo, and Rosati's (which is...Chicago pizza). My fiance grew up in Independence going to this place. Her friends did too, of course. So, when it came time for a big group of her friends to grab some pizza, Tim's was the place. I went in with an open mind and stomach. First, the atmosphere. It's totally what you would expect here, which is great. It's a slight bit run down but not much. Clean (when I was there at least...others seem to disagree on previous reviews), roomy, and with plenty of seating should you decide to stay there. Next, the beer. They really do have quite a few bottles, but nothing all that inventive. However, they're fairly affordable and get the job done. They do have some seasonals as well, and even pitchers, should you decide to go down either path. OK, now the pizza. Oy...no thanks. The crust is generally flavorless, the toppings seem of poor quality, and the cheese isn't quite liberally sprinkled enough. Oh yeah, and they really have never heard of tomato sauce. Seriously. They really, really do pack the toppings on, because I believe that's the only thing giving flavor to the pizza. But those toppings aren't great, or even good. Everyone kept raving about Canadian bacon, but after taking a bite, I'd rather eat the VHS tape of Canadian Bacon, the John Candy movie. It has very little flavor and is as dry as drywall. The taco pizza was an interesting idea (though it's becoming more popular around the pizza-verse), but I really didn't like it. It also seemed to have sausage instead of anything reflecting taco meat...odd. Canadian bacon and pineapple then came out - same issue with the Canadian bacon, and the pineapple was completely dry and, as a result, had almost no flavor. Seeing a theme? "Dry". "No flavor". These words are popular in my review, and for good reason. The people working there were friendly enough. Pizza's seemed to take a while to come out, but it was a Saturday night and I could see their ovens were packed full of pies, so I can't complain too much. Most people around KC will really like this pizza, and I completely understand why. It's affordable, full of toppings, and may remind you of your childhood if you're from this immediate area. I have been here more than a few times. The Pace's do a bang up job for a small place. Yesterday I came in for a meatball sandwich & a bottle of suds on a late lunch prior to going home. I was going to pay right up front, but Mr. Pace asked if I would have more than one bottle of pilsner, I said yeah & he started a tab. Brought the sandwich out & another bottle of beer. First of all they don't accept credit or debit cards. This is a huge inconvenience. I placed an order to pickup. The teenage kid on the phone was rude. Only when I get there do I notice they don't take cards. I had to go find an ATM. When I mention to that same kid that it's an inconvenience that you don't take cards, he said "that's just the way it is". I said maybe you should tell people when they call that you don't take cards. He said something like "uh OK whatever". I told him I was one and done with Tims. He sarcastically said"we appreciate your business". Clearly they don't. They are a bit expensive, they should be able to afford to take cards for what they charge.
