This is a long strip mall that has many businesses including this dive bar. I always enjoy ordering a beer from the tap instead of a bottle. I was surprised how many beer choices they had available, even a Blue Moon with the slice of orange for decor. They only accept cash so bring some Jeffersons along to enjoy a drink or two. Been in West Covina for 3 years now and honestly this is the worst bar I've been to in my life. The bartender with the blond hair, didn't quite get her name, was extremely rude. Told us they only served beer then when we asked for a specific brand she told us "this isn't a sushi restaurant" ... once she give us our drink she ask us to pay with cash right away. Before I could even take a sip of the drink she asked again did I have the cash, assuming I would stiff her I guess ... I have been at this bar several times. However, it was during the time, when I was a student at Cal Poly Pomona, and living in the area. It is a nice and cozy dive bar, located in West Covina. The drinks are fairly priced, and they have a good variety to choose from. Furthermore, the ambiance inside was quite ok. Oh man, what a dump!!! In all my years of being a West Covina resident I had never gone to Tina's Tavern and probably would've been just fine had I never gone! I just happen to be waiting for a movie to start at the Edwards across the street on a Thursday night, so to kill some time decided to give good ole Tina's Tavern a chance. First of all, its just a beer bar, so no mixed drinks, how f-ing lame is that. So I had to settle for a $5 bottle of Smirnoff, because yea I don't really do beer. The whole place reeks of cigarettes, beer and cheap cholo cologne, not hot at all. Just like everyone saids there are lots of big mommas, cholos, other assortments of ghetto people, but there was a mixed crowd over all. There were several younger people around my own age, and a few people from High School I believe. There was also a group of rockabilly girls all dressed up all cute, why on earth they would go here is beyond me. The bar area is pretty small, not really that many stools or other tables or options to sit at. They have some weird system about debit cards or something that I saw other people complaining about as well. They also have the ghettoist DJ ever imaginable, hahaha! who plays a great variety of cholo jams and rock. He has a turntable and whatever other type of equipment he can fit on a table near the entrance, it's a really weird and cramped set up for the DJ. So yea it's not that nice to begin with, there's only beer, and allows smoking inside. Don't get me wrong, I love a good dive bar, and even the occasional cholo jam, but man yea, this place is a total dump. Why the 5 stars? Becuase it's exactly what you would expect from a dive! I've been going to tinas for almost 10 years and it's all the same. The crowd changes a bit but everyone's here for a reason, to have a nice cold beer. (Since thats all they serve) Some of these reviewers are a bit confused, I think. It's not a downtown or Hollywood bar, or a Vegas lounge... it's a bar, in a strip mall, in La Puente..... Bartenders are always friendly, beers are priced good, the Juke Box is awesome....only - for me is walking out smelling like an ash tray....but it's worth it every time. Feeling stagnant at 25 thinking I'd never be wowed by how serious of a dive a place is, I had nearly given up on that old feeling. The day was saved when I walked through the threshold and into the haze of cigarette smoke known at Tina's Tavern... A vending machine with cigarettes in case you quit quitting or smoked so much in there you ran out... a CD wall-mount jukebox (no internet any-song-you-want jukebox here kids!!!)... a REAL pinball machine... darts... pool tables...neon signs. The older cats at the bar were pretty amused by the presence of my and my friends, which was harmless albeit slightly creepy. The bathroom is on par, a toilet and a trough in the men's room. Nothing that your ordinary dive bar wouldn't have. Maybe it was the dudes about to throw down within about 3 minutes of us settling in??? Maybe it was the lesbian couples?? But something about the place was just SO off the wall!! This is a real f'in dive. Don't go in there alone if you're a chick, you'll be fending off some REAL characters!! Ghetto crowd, but I never felt TOO threatened. It was poppin alright on a Thursday night. It's a decent sized place, but it might be pretty packed on the weekend. I come here when we can't find a place to go. Its an "OK" spot. There use to be a lot of trouble here but i haven't seen or heard of anything in a longtime. Myself, along with the other fellows of Asian descent that I am sometimes in the company of, decided to check this place out one night. The moment we walked in, I swore I heard the record that was playing screech to a high-pitched halt, and all eyes pointing in our direction. This was odd in that, I'm fairly sure this place doesn't even HAVE a record player. It becoming glaringly obvious, not only to ourselves, but to the other bar perusers this night, that we weren't the usual crowd that Tina's brings in. After the initial awkwardness, we proceeded to the bar, and got treated to eye candy from the well endowed bartender lady, and killer prices on huge beers on tap. Despite being called the "Wu-Tang Clan," and being invited to an Esse party that we chose to skip, the night we had there was fun, and we have returned a couple of times. I've only been here once, about a couple weeks ago. The crowd was mixed, I did see all the cholos/cholas that everyone refers to here! But I also saw younger people, and people who looked like they were in their mid twenties. So I would say that this place is a mixed crowd. The beer itself tasted great! No complaints. The female bartender however, was not great. I didn't get a name, but she looked to be of Caucasian descent, and was covered in tattoos. Never have I met such a rude bartender! Been to some way nicer bars, with better looking bartenders (male and female) who you would EXPECT to be cocky and condescending but turn out to be pretty cool. At least for tip's sake!!! But this lady obviously didn't care about a tip. I had asked her if they accepted debit or credit, because I had heard that this was a cash-only place. She said yes. So I placed my order and handed her my debit card, and she said "how much do you want?" which confused the heck out of me.... I asked her what exactly she meant, to which she fake laughed and said to herself "how many times do I have to explain this...." while rolling her eyes. She had a perfect opportunity to explain the way debit/credit cards worked at this place, when I asked her the first time. Its basically like an atm machine behind the bar, and the bartenders withdraw your money for you. An explanation would have been great.
