Some things were good, some were not as good. Good first: My partner's mole enchiladas were perfect with a generous portion and great tinga meat inside. My chile relleno taco was a little oily but hey it's a chile relleno taco, what are you going to do? It was great. Not as good was the taco de tripas. The waiter asked me if I wanted it "well done" and without thinking I said yes - this meant the meat was fully crispy with no chewiness at all. I wouldn't order it that way again. Also frustrating were long waits first to order (it seems they forgot about us), then for our food, then for the check. I've been going here pretty regularly for the past few years and I've never had a bad meal. The service and food have always been excellent. Normally I'd have given this place 5 stars but my experience last night upset me a bit and I'm having to lower my rating by a star. I'm not writing this place off yet, but if I continue to have similar experiences I'm going to have to add this place to my ever growing list of places to avoid. So last night we dine here with a party of 7. Four of us were regulars and three members of our party were here for the first time. Everyone enjoyed their food. We had Carne Asada, Menudo, Carne en su Jugo, Steak Burritos, Taco dinners, etc. Just a wide array of entrees and soups. Only one party member was a little dissatisfied with their food because their steak was ordered medium rare and came out well done and the shrimp that came with the steak were rather small and bland. The salsa and chips here are also fantastic and I love their Horchata. We had a server that didn't speak very good English and she needed to check with other staff a few times about our orders and requests. I don't know why they would assign her to a non Spanish speaking table when there were other servers working, but it wasn't that big of a deal and all of our orders were correct. Now for the part that really upset me last night. This place has what I consider a weird practice of not bringing you a check . Instead, when you're ready to leave, you go up to the counter to find out your total and pay your bill. I've never liked that practice because I want to view my bill, make sure everything is okay, and take my time deciding on a tip etc. Plus, if you're with multiple people and wanting to split the bill, it's pretty impossible if you don't know what the bill is. They really should end this practice. Anyway, I was the one paying the entire bill last night so I went up to the counter and informed the woman working the register that I was ready to pay and pointed out my table. She informed me that my total was $143.28. I gave her $145 cash and received $1.72 change and my receipt. I gave her $26.72 for a tip which is slightly over 18% (over 23% when you consider the actual subtotal of the bill before tax and the already included tip was actually $114.75). I then looked at my receipt and the tip was already entered on the bill at $16.77. She never informed me of this when giving me my total and accepted an additional $26.72 on top of the $16.77 that was already on the bill. I then informed her that the tip was already on the bill and that I'd like my cash back. She returned the money to me with no problem but asked me "the whole $26.72?". I told her of course, if you put the tip on the bill and don't inform me, that's what you get unfortunately. I just felt insulted and wronged because I should have been informed from the start about the tip being included in the total and I should have been informed by her when I was handing her an additional $26.72 (If she had done that I would have certainly thrown an extra $10 on there). The whole interaction struck me as kind of strange though since she wasn't even our actual server to begin with and it made me start to wonder if her plan was to pocket the second tip. Now, I understand that it's common practice to put the tip on the bill for parties of 6 or more but you should always be informed of this and it should always be reflected on your check. The simple solution to all of this is to bring every table a check/bill so that they can make sure there's no problems before they pay and your interactions should be limited to your server. read more

I've have been here twice and have had the ceviche and also the tortas. Both times i have not been disappointed. The ceviche was very wel prepared and although it was a littlen different, it was pretty tasty. The chicken torta was very good and filling as it is filled with all sorts of good stuff. I went in starving not having eaten anything all day and was only able to finish it. And have I mentioned the warm chips and good salsas? They are quite good. The steak is fantastic. That's about the only good thing I can say about my experience. Service was inattentive, but that's not why this review is two stars. We finally got the check and I noticed there was a $20 delivery charge. We were eating in so there was no delivery. Also, how could a delivery charge cost $20? The conclusion I drew was that it was a slow night and the staff was trying to scam us to make up for it. I brought it to our waitress' attention and she all she said was "oh, how'd that get there?" My favorite is either the tacos pastor or gorditas. Hidden gem in the neighborhood and price is pretty fair. Free chips and salsa dining in and always friendly staff. Authentic Mexican food that was fast and delicious. Ordered the gordita dinner, 1 chorizo and potatoes and 1 steak, and both were tremendous. Added some of the hot guacamole sauce to my dinner and it turned into perfection. Felt sorry for the people who sat at next table, because my son ate most of the hot cauliflower and carrots. my complaint of tio Luis is that the food quality has dropped over the years. They used to grill all the chicken now it's this tasteless boiled/steamed shredded chicken that leaves the tacos/burritos soggy and nowhere near as good as 2 years ago. Tio Luis Tacos is a friendly neighborhood restaurant where you can bring friends and family. I have been going to Tio Luis since I was 5 years old. It was actually one of the first restaurants I went to when I arrived to the United States. Tio Luis's atmosphere, food and service made me feel like I was back in Mexico. Tio Luis is located in the Brighton Park neighborhood, southwest of Chicago. It is a small location with the outside painted and decorated as a house in Mexico. As soon as you walk in you can hear the Mexican music playing neither to loud nor to low just right. Along the walls you see pictures of Mexicanmusicans and the walls are all covered in murals representing the streets of Mexico and its culture. The food is amazing! It is easy to find Mexican food in the Southside part of Chicago but it's hard to find good tasting food. The menu has a lot to offer with a lot of great authentic Mexican dishes. Tio Luis has also been voted to have "The Best Tacos in Chicago" by the Chicago Tribune (para.5). With a variety of choices it's hard to pick just one! When I went to Tio Luis last night I had the "Carne Asada" it's a 12oz flame broiled steak, with a side of rice, beans , greens, and tortillas. The steak was cooked just right at the temperature I asked for. My steak was tender but yet it had a juicy pink center full of flavors. My girlfriend had "Carne En Su Jugo" its chopped steak, whole beans, diced onion cilantro, radishes and avocado in beef broth. My girlfriend said it was DELICIOUS! Service at a restaurant can kill or make your meal. Tio Luis's service made our dinner much better. They have a great and friendly staff. As soon as we walked in we were seated. Not even a minute into sitting down a waiter brought us a basket of freshly made tortilla chips and salsa. The waiter and busboys were very attentive and interactive. The whole staff at Tio Luis made sure to pay clear attention, did everything right the first time and kept a good attitude during work. When ever you are in the mood for some Mexican food Tio Luis Tacos is the best choice you won't be let down. You will leave with a smile on your face and happy stomach. I know we're human and make mistakes but by the time his food came to the table everyone's food was cold. What's the purpose of going out and trying to enjoy a hot meal together. Ah, Tio Luis! You were there for me in high school and I'm glad to see you're STILL there! I have always loved your steak burritos and swear by no other. While parking on Archer or Rockwell can be tough (an understatement!), the food is quick and cheap! Even better, they deliver!!! The atmosphere is about what you'd expect for a mexican food place - bright but small. Ordering was easy, and the girls working the register are very nice. Our food (2 burritos) were ready in about ten minutes and were definitely cooked to order. I'm glad my stand-by Mexican Food place is ready and waiting to make my tummy happy! read more

From early morning today I planned my entire day on eating Tio Luis for dinner. I ate very little for lunch because I knew I was going to have Tui Luis's taco dinner. its a big portion and delicious. I plan my activities so I can leave in time to arrive before Tio Luis closes.... Today I call at 10:05pm to place an order for pick-up, the girl on the phone tells me, they are closed, and they closed at 9pm. I tell her that their hours are 11pm (which it says on their website, google, yelp, and inside their store) She explains to me that THEY ARE CLOSING EARLY. I was extremely disappointed that I planned everything to treat myself to a Tio Luis Taco dinner, for the girl on the phone to tell me they are closing early and I can't order food because the kitchen is almost done cleaning. I was furious because I was looking forward to eating here since this morning to be told that they want to close early. I made my decision that I am not going back because its completely unprofessional to randomly close early.You can't depend on Tio Luis to be open during the hours they say they will be open. The first time I came and dined at this restaurant was in 2008. I do not casually dine there often, but when I do, it exceed my expectations every time with superb service and excellent dishes. Keep in mind that Tio Luis is known for their Tacos (hence, the name). My personal favorite are the fish and shrimp tacos. My goodness! It probably one of the best tacos I ever had! The fish is grilled to perfection and with every bite there is an explosion of mouthwatering flavor. Not to say that the other dishes aren't good. Their strong suit lies in their tacos. I have been coming to tio Luis devotedly for 16 years, I have put my family and friends on to tio Luis. I remember going there seeing the owner and his family when his daughter was just a little girl and now she's grown. Years ago this would have been a 5+ star rating but sadly their prices have increased and their portions smaller and smaller, the old friendly staffed replaced by random faces every time I go there. Service is atrocious but I come back for the delicious food. Unfortunately after today I won't be back again and that makes me sad I have given them one too many last chances with service. Was put on hold 4x during my take out order with my question avoided the entire time I get to the restaurant to see it empty. No reason I needed to be on hold that many times, my question was how much extra for avocado ended up having to just pay whatever it was (50cents each taco) I come to find out on my receipt. And the sad disappointment that the tack dinner comes out to almost $14 with los comales sized tacos. I'm so disappointed. These are the best tacos in Chicago, I loved the tortas too. I work in Romeoville and I live in Harvey. I left work and picked up some tacos and tortas on my way home from work. I drove down Kedzie and it took me about 50 minutes to get home, the tacos and tortas were still hot. My wife loved the food and I can't wait to go back and sit down to sample their menu. Started picking up lunch at this place after seeing them on "Check Please". Every Friday I would pickup food for the office. It was very good. We noticed a problem 12/05/14: the food was super greasy - tacos and Taco Salad. Picked up again 12/12/14 and this time around the steak was super tough, not to mention the tortilla edges. This has never happened before. Not sure what it is, but something has changed. Maybe the way they prepare the food, the preparer, or the source of the meat. Fix it please. read more

I been here a couple of times and the tortas are really good. Only $4 and Tacos $2 !!!The tacos with carne asada are good too but don't order the enchiladas with brown mole`. if you like Mexican food this is your place. Nice remodel, more than adequate staff, reasonable prices and great food. Nothing is really stellar but everything is pretty good. I never had a bad experience or food regret. The huevo rancheros are the best around if your mother is not Mexican. The Mex street food (tacos, burritos, tortas) are, and the dinner plates are a great value. Try the the whole fish, its like $10 bucks and what a value. It taste great and the quality seems like you are robbing them for $10. My biggest complaints are the parking.
