We kicked things off with the Hummus and Pita, followed by the Lamb Kebab and Butcher Kofte. The meat was packed with flavor, but fair warning--the hummus and pita were so good, we were already getting full halfway through the meal. The food was great, but what really stood out was the service. That alone is enough to bring me back, and next time, I'm bringing more friends. Daniel was fantastic--warm, welcoming, and even shared a few laughs with us. I had my eye on the Baklava for dessert, but we were too stuffed... or so we thought. Daniel reminded us that there's always room for dessert, even if it's just a sliver. His extra effort and great service were truly memorable and one of the biggest reasons we'll be returning!

My friend Erin L. and I had dinner plans on a Monday night. The place we originally wanted to go to ended up being closed, so I'm grateful we found this place on Yelp. We shared one appetizer and two entrees. The beets salad was refreshing and delicious. I liked the nuttiness flavor. For our entrees, we got the lamb kebab and chicken kebab. The lamb kebab was amazing. The meat was very tender and not gamy at all. I'm not sure what they put in the rice, but it was so tasty. The chicken kebab was a bit overdone and not as tender as I hoped for, but still good. We loved our food, and finished every last bite. Portions were a bit smaller than I expected. I wanted more kebabs!! Service was good. We were indecisive with our two entrees so I'm appreciative that our server helped us decide. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is cute and quaint.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Would go back for the lamb kebab :)

The food was amazing!!! Service was exceptional! Came here with friends and family to celebrate my mom's birthday, waiter was super friendly and helpful through it all. We tried the beet salad, garbanzo salad, and the Shepperd salad. I shared the salmon entrée with my sister, and it was absolutely divine. We also had pita bread, numerous glasses of wine, shakshuka, shrimp casserole, cigar borek, olive and feta, and dessert!! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant ambience itself was beautiful.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The decor was lovely and the bathroom was clean![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] HIGHLY recommend this restaurant if you're in the alameda area! Super yum 10/10

I have driven past this place several times and wanted to give it a try. Finally, I made it to the restaurant. I was immediately pleasantly greeted. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was impressed by their ambiance. Very nicely put together and very very clean![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My BF and I looked up everything on the menu. Get the beet salad! It's delectably delicious as is the kebab plate and the other items we ordered. This is a must eat and going to be my new new favorite Mediterranean restaurant! Yum yum time!

Randomly picked this place, and so glad we did! It is a lil pricey but worth the tasty goodness! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is small but cute![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Cigar Borek - 4/5 stars - the flavor is so delicious with that feta in the middle, the outside is not consistently crunchy like other ones I've tried (like the ends are nice and crunchy, but the middle is soft) Beets Salad - 10/5 stars - absolutely recommend this!!!!! It's so refreshing and full of flavor, the beets covered in that sauce is perfection Hallumi - 5/5 stars - I wasn't sure the proper way to eat these so I made little sandwiches with the pita and put a little of each thing then dip it all in the oil, it was perfect combination of cheese to refreshing cucumber to pita Overall, you have to try the Beets Salad! But everything is delicious.

Everything is freshly made here. My family cleaned all their plates. The service was really good too. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place used to be a pizza place, but it's super homey.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

This is a great place to enjoy some Greek food. It's a little pricey ($20 for a burger), but the food is excellent. What we had... + Imam Fainted - not sure about the name, but this is a vegetarian stuffed eggplant, and it is delicious. The eggplant is soft and stuffed with peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes, and then topped with melty cheese. It's actually quite large. + Lamb burger - juicy and delicious. The bun was a bit average though. + Hummus and pita - wow, this hummus is so good. + Beet salad - the beets are juicy and sweet. The lettuce and cheese complimented the beets so well. I had considered getting this as an entree, but glad I didn't. It's small - definitely side salad size. We all enjoyed our food and will definitely be ordering from them again.

    Istanbul Trio (subbed Eggplant Salad)

My partner and I knew we were going to grab dinner today, but we weren't sure what exactly. We did some Yelp surfing and ALA Mediterranean Grill happen to call to the both of us. I had it on my Yelp bookmarks for a bit too, so today was the day to satisfy that curiosity! ALA is located on Webster street so it can take a little bit to find parking. They do not have their own parking lot, but you may just get lucky with finding a spot in the residential area, like we did! Since we came mid-week, it wasn't that busy at the restaurant, but there were small parties here and there. Between the two of us, we got 1) Istanbul Trio (option to replace one of the three dips with an Eggplant Salad. We swapped out the Haydari for the Eggplant Salad), 2) Lamb Kebab, and 3) Karniyarik. The Istanbul Trio is definitely one not to be missed! Aside from the Eggplant Salad, the trio included Muhammara and hummus. This trio dip was such a great appetizer. Both the eggplant salad and Muhammara had a deep smokey flavor to it, but the Muhammara is creamy, whereas the eggplant salad was on the lighter side. I'm not sure what's included inside of the dips, but the eggplant salad comes with just a hint of spiciness. As for the hummus, it's hard to mess up, but the hummus here tasted more "green" and fresh. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it tastes slightly different from other hummus I've tried. All very good dips. We completely cleared this plate, haha. As for my Karniyarik, I opted for no cheese. I haven't tried this dish before, but this was a eggplant stuffed with beef, peppers, onions, served on top of a cauliflower soup. The eggplant was easy to slice through and it went nicely with the ingredients mixed in there. The cauliflower soup was delicious too. Pretty flavorful. While I enjoyed this dish, I'm not sure I'll get it again for that price point, but everyone places different values on different things. I also sampled my partner's lamb kebabs and these were made so well! It's not well done, and it's tender and just slightly chewy, in a good way. Next time I'm interested in trying the chicken kebabs! Lastly, we were debating between the baklava or choc-ALA. Baklava was a popular pick on Yelp, but I also thought the choc-ALA may be more unique. Since we had trouble deciding, we asked for a recommendation from what I assume to be the owner! He's so entertaining, he ended up flipping a coin for us and so Baklava it was! And this baklava was delicious. 2 pieces for $7 was a pretty good deal! The top of the baklava was flakey, while the bottom was dense. It was a little hard to cut into because there were 40 layers of filo. You can see the honey oozing out when you cut into it. This baklava definitely did not disappoint! I think we found another top Mediterranean shop that we both enjoy. Service was great. We were checked on multiple times and the owner was really nice. 10/10 would recommend!

Staff and Service: - The first time I came here, the service was average. I thought it would be a little faster considering we were only one of three tables filled at the restaurant. The second time I came here, the service was pretty slow. It took about 10 minutes to be seated at a table that was empty when we walked in. And it took a lot of eye contact and flagging down to get things like water, the bill, etc. Food: - Pide: tasty flatbread with lots of cheese and herbs - Shepperd Salad: fresh tasting small salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, feta, etc. - Chicken Kebab: the chicken was pretty dry in this dish, so I did not order it the second time I came here - Butcher Kofte: flavorful dish, especially with the sauce the dish comes with. The garbanzo beans were a little grainy and didn't do much for the dish - Lamb Kebab: my friend ate this the first time we came here and got sick afterwards. He seemed fine the second time he ordered it. - Olive and Feta: fair warning that these olives still have pits in them Miscellaneous: - Street parking available - Try to come during off hours if you want faster service

Service -5/5 Food - 3.5/5 Ambiance - 4/5 Came on a Wednesday night at 7:30pm and was seated immediately. Very friendly and kind staff. Muhammara - star of the show in my opinion. Great flavor and texture. Would order again. Karniyarik - if you love eggplant, this is for you. I usually opt for a seafood dish but when I saw salmon was the only option, I figured I'd try something new. Kulbasti - this was tasty, I probably would order again

Hands down best meal I have had in ages. Excellent service. I can't wait to try more dishes. The lamb was perfectly cooked. Did not take a photo but the rice pudding dessert was sooo tasty!

Istanbul Trio - Hummus, Muhammara & Haydari with Pita
    Dexter D.

We were greeted by Daniel when we walked in last Wednesday, first customers of the evening. I play League Pinball next door at the Pacific Pinball Museum so we by the restaurant just about every week. She started off with a Savory Yogurt based drink that I forget the name of. It is quite the opposite of Mango Lassi as there is no sweetness involved. She said that it was quite refreshing. I had my usual boring ole Diet Coke. When trying out a new place, we like to go big with flavors. We ordered: Istanbul Trio - 5 - Hummus, Muhammara & Haydari with Pita. All delicious in their own ways. Shrimp Casserole - 5 - Well cooked Shrimp with Kaskaval Cheese, Garlic and Hungarian Paprika. Beets Salad - 4 - Excellent flavor. Lots of Beets. Why the downgrade? The menu said Red AND Yellow Beets. We didn't see any Yellow. Kizartma - 4 - Good flavor, but the portion size could have been larger for the price. Lamb Kabob - 3 - A bit over-seasoned (salty) on the Lamb and bland on the Rice. The salad was okay but was more of a plate filler. Baklava & Turkish Tea - 5 - were presented without charge. For the most part, we enjoyed our meal. The flavors are good. Just about everything came with Pita Bread so we had the correct amount to sop up sauces. Service was excellent. We probably got more service because we were early diners. It did get busy before we left. We'll be back.

The Lamb Kebab, and star of the show. So tender!

I was in the area looking to grab a bite before heading to Southie to catch the Hawks manhandle the Niners. As usual, the restaurant that I always look to forward to visiting is Hummus Republic. Once I found some parking around the corner, I was happily skipping down the block towards the entrance, until... The place was dark, and no one was inside. I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't one of the scheduled closed days. Sure enough, it was not. There was also no signage on the window or any mention of a vacation or emergency. It was just... closed. As I looked inside, I noticed some furniture and decor had already been removed, so I knew it was beyond the point of no return. In any event, it is indeed a dark time for me, as I frequented Hummus Republic quite often. Yes, I know it is a chain, but the nearest one that I know of now is all the way in Livermore near the outlets. Honestly, it's not completely a shock though, as this particular location was often empty, and I also heard that rent is quite high. There are also alternative Mediterranean shops in the vicinity, such as Tahina and Q's, but none of them combine the level of freshness, convenience and overall value as Hummus Republic. Although it's a lazy comparison used a zillion times before, just think of Hummus Republic as the Chipotle of Mediterranean fare. Depending on who you get serving you, portions can range from large to absolutely gargantuan. It's no exaggeration when I say that a single bowl serving is pretty much enough for both lunch and dinner. Coming from a pig like yours truly, that is saying a lot! Sadly, this exact address also seems to have a high turnover rate, as I have seen a myriad of various businesses sprout up there in recent years. Hopefully the next tenant will provide something to fill the inevitable void. RIP Hummus Republic! You will be sorely missed! The only thing that improved my mood after witnessing this sad news was watching the Hawks absolutely mollywhop the Niners. :‑D
