The Friday that I visited this restaurant, there was a marketplace being held on the sidewalk. I'm not sure if this made parking more of a challenge than usual. After waiting until 5pm. I was able to order the Muhammara dip, falafel, halloumi and pistachio baklava (they do offer walnut). My favorites were the muhammara, which was the richest version of this dip that I've ever had and the baklava. Regarding the dip, I wonder if they char the bell peppers to the extreme. Yum! The baklava was perfection even though they were only bite sized morsels. I definitely could do without either of the other dishes. Falafels had an off taste and the halloumi didn't have the crisp exterior I enjoy. Was the baklava overpriced ($7)? I'll let you be the judge. It was tasty. First time dining in at Ala on a date night. We waited a couple minutes while they cleared out some tables. Then we proceeded to place our order. Ala combo - ***** w/chicken, kofte, and since they were out of lamb we opted for beef / kulbasti. Of the 3 meats, the kulbasti was my fave. The combo is shareable for 2 since it comes with pita, rice, salad, and some grilled onions and bell peppers used for plating. Baklava w/pistachios ***** divine and not too sweet or wet. We had an amazing time and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Dare I say, it's almost as good as Michael Mina's Orla (Las Vegas, NV). Of course it's not as fancy / pricey, but the food was delicious and the hospitality was warm and inviting. My friend Erin L. and I had dinner plans on a Monday night. The place we originally wanted to go to ended up being closed, so I'm grateful we found this place on Yelp. We shared one appetizer and two entrees. The beets salad was refreshing and delicious. I liked the nuttiness flavor. For our entrees, we got the lamb kebab and chicken kebab. The lamb kebab was amazing. The meat was very tender and not gamy at all. I'm not sure what they put in the rice, but it was so tasty. The chicken kebab was a bit overdone and not as tender as I hoped for, but still good. We loved our food, and finished every last bite. Portions were a bit smaller than I expected. Who would have thought that we would live this place so much? We were in Alameda at a function and wanted to eat dinner early before heading back to San Francisco. We got there a little after 5pm. This is a great place to enjoy some Greek food. It's a little pricey ($20 for a burger), but the food is excellent. What we had... + Imam Fainted - not sure about the name, but this is a vegetarian stuffed eggplant, and it is delicious. The eggplant is soft and stuffed with peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes, and then topped with melty cheese. It's actually quite large. + Lamb burger - juicy and delicious. The bun was a bit average though. + Hummus and pita - wow, this hummus is so good. + Beet salad - the beets are juicy and sweet. The lettuce and cheese complimented the beets so well. My partner and I knew we were going to grab dinner today, but we weren't sure what exactly. We did some Yelp surfing and ALA Mediterranean Grill happen to call to the both of us. I had it on my Yelp bookmarks for a bit too, so today was the day to satisfy that curiosity! ALA is located on Webster street so it can take a little bit to find parking. They do not have their own parking lot, but you may just get lucky with finding a spot in the residential area, like we did! Since we came mid-week, it wasn't that busy at the restaurant, but there were small parties here and there. Between the two of us, we got 1) Istanbul Trio (option to replace one of the three dips with an Eggplant Salad. We swapped out the Haydari for the Eggplant Salad), 2) Lamb Kebab, and 3) Karniyarik. The Istanbul Trio is definitely one not to be missed! Aside from the Eggplant Salad, the trio included Muhammara and hummus. This trio dip was such a great appetizer. Both the eggplant salad and Muhammara had a deep smokey flavor to it, but the Muhammara is creamy, whereas the eggplant salad was on the lighter side. I'm not sure what's included inside of the dips, but the eggplant salad comes with just a hint of spiciness. As for the hummus, it's hard to mess up, but the hummus here tasted more "green" and fresh. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it tastes slightly different from other hummus I've tried. All very good dips. We completely cleared this plate, haha. As for my Karniyarik, I opted for no cheese. I haven't tried this dish before, but this was a eggplant stuffed with beef, peppers, onions, served on top of a cauliflower soup. The eggplant was easy to slice through and it went nicely with the ingredients mixed in there. The cauliflower soup was delicious too. Pretty flavorful. While I enjoyed this dish, I'm not sure I'll get it again for that price point, but everyone places different values on different things. I also sampled my partner's lamb kebabs and these were made so well! It's not well done, and it's tender and just slightly chewy, in a good way. Next time I'm interested in trying the chicken kebabs! Lastly, we were debating between the baklava or choc-ALA. Baklava was a popular pick on Yelp, but I also thought the choc-ALA may be more unique. Since we had trouble deciding, we asked for a recommendation from what I assume to be the owner! He's so entertaining, he ended up flipping a coin for us and so Baklava it was! And this baklava was delicious. 2 pieces for $7 was a pretty good deal! The top of the baklava was flakey, while the bottom was dense. It was a little hard to cut into because there were 40 layers of filo. You can see the honey oozing out when you cut into it. This baklava definitely did not disappoint! Staff and Service: - The first time I came here, the service was average. I thought it would be a little faster considering we were only one of three tables filled at the restaurant. The second time I came here, the service was pretty slow. It took about 10 minutes to be seated at a table that was empty when we walked in. The food was great! We split the shakshuka for an appetizer, then I got the chicken kebab and my coworker got the iskender. The shakshuka, while annotated as not being the type with eggs, was still a lot different that I anticipated. The eggplant was cooked perfectly though and I enjoyed the flavor. Highlights for me were Muhammara - extremely flavorful and pita warm with really good texture - and the butcher kofte - combo of well seasoned beef patties and the refreshing salad 10/10! I would be cautious about making to-go orders via Square. I made a pickup order from Ala on the evening of July 3 and my credit card was charged. The restaurant was closed when I went to pick up my food; there was a sign stating they were closed until July 8. To get a refund, I called multiple times after July 8, and sent a Yelp and Instagram message. I haven't heard back. Ala should provide a full refund for an order that was not fulfilled -- placed at a time when their Square shop should have been closed for orders. read more

We were greeted by Daniel when we walked in last Wednesday, first customers of the evening. I play League Pinball next door at the Pacific Pinball Museum so we by the restaurant just about every week. She started off with a Savory Yogurt based drink that I forget the name of. It is quite the opposite of Mango Lassi as there is no sweetness involved. She said that it was quite refreshing. I had my usual boring ole Diet Coke. When trying out a new place, we like to go big with flavors. We ordered: Istanbul Trio - 5 - Hummus, Muhammara & Haydari with Pita. All delicious in their own ways. Shrimp Casserole - 5 - Well cooked Shrimp with Kaskaval Cheese, Garlic and Hungarian Paprika. Beets Salad - 4 - Excellent flavor. Lots of Beets. Why the downgrade? The menu said Red AND Yellow Beets. We didn't see any Yellow. Kizartma - 4 - Good flavor, but the portion size could have been larger for the price. Lamb Kabob - 3 - A bit over-seasoned (salty) on the Lamb and bland on the Rice. The salad was okay but was more of a plate filler. Baklava & Turkish Tea - 5 - were presented without charge. For the most part, we enjoyed our meal. The flavors are good. Just about everything came with Pita Bread so we had the correct amount to sop up sauces. Service was excellent. We probably got more service because we were early diners. The food in this restaurant is delicious however I have had 2 experiences now where the restaurant was closed and it's not reflected accurately on Yelp and DoorDash. Twice my husband and I have ordered from this restaurant via DoorDash because it says it is open, only to find out the restaurant is closed when we arrive to pick up. When we have spoken to Door Dash they report that they weren't informed of the closed hours. If you're going to eat from this business, come in person and do not order via DoorDash Dash. They don't tell Door Dash when they close and it's inconvenient to find out at pick up time. read more

WOW - the name of the restaurant may say "Mediterranean" but this is a solid Turkish menu and the quality is outstanding. I've eaten at a LOT of Turkish restaurants (some of which were when I lived in Turkey for 2 years near Adana) and this is by far the best I can remember. The cigar bourek are delectable with a tender flaky phyllo wrap around a feta filling that has more subtle flavor than your Greek variety. The green "dip" is a one-of-a-kind recipe dreamed up by the chef. I tried to figure out what was in it, but the chef's wife said it was a "secret recipe" and I can see why. You don't want this getting out. I pose you the challenge to try yourself! The muhammara was creamier than ones I've had in the past. More of a paste, than a typical tapenade consistency and better for it. The pita was served hot with that lovely soft crunch on the exterior. Then the star of the show, the lamb kebab. SO tender. Often you find folks will over flavor lamb in Mediterranean spots, but not here. I'm guessing it was marinated and then lightly seasoned and grilled. Even my partner commented "they know what they're doing". The rice was a smaller grain than your typical rice, and has a nice stickiness to it, similar to what you find in Japanese restaurants. The salad had a bit of pickled beets and a very light vinegary dressing. It all flowed together beautifully. To top it off, we enjoyed the traditional Turkish coffee in gorgeous silver servings along with a decadent Baklava that I ate with my hands, the honey just DRIPPING out of it as it melted on the tongue. They offer a yummy local beer selection. I had the Chardonnay which was soft and not too buttery. The portioning was perfect too. Just enough to satisfy, but not over do it (and we could have eaten till we popped, it was so good). We also had the chef/owner, his wife and the server check on us regularly, which was very nice. The ambiance is cozy and they have a great outdoor patio in back with pretty lighting. Very romantic actually. I'm sad they are so far from my home but would make the drive to dine there again. Also, make a reservation! We got lucky that someone didn't show, and they can fill up quickly. Our server Daniel informed us that they will be doing a fundraiser soon with proceeds going to help with the recovery from the devastating earthquakes in Turkey. The atmosphere was quiet and pleasant; indoor definitely didn't seem as nice as outside, so we asked to be seated in the patio. Service was attentive and friendly. Food-wise, we were pleased with the qualty. The appetizers seemed particularly yummy; we shared the haloumi cheese, the eggplant dip, and pita. The haloumi had a delicious flavor. I'm so glad to have had a chance to come try Ala Mediterranean because it did not disappoint! My party of 2 came on a Friday night and it was seated right away, which is always nice. We started with the Istanbul Trio, which included hummus, muhamarra, and the Heidari. However, we subbed the Heidari with the eggplant salad. This was one of my favorite items! The hummus and the eggplant salad tasted refreshing and was very flavorful. But, for me, the star of the trio was the muhamarra. I loved the the roasted pepper flavor with nuttiness from the walnut! All of these paired with warm pita bread was a great appetizer to start our meal. I had an chicken kebab for my entree, which also came with rice and salad, and pita bread for sides. I was pleasantly surprised by the juiciness and flavor of the chicken. It was cooked perfectly and was definitely the star of the plate. I only wish there were more chicken on the plate! My partner had the lamb burger, which he also loved and said the lamb was so juicy and tender. We finished our meal with baklava. This was a flaky dessert with a dense bottom and sweetened with honey. It was absolutely delicious and wasn't overly sweet. The warmed baklava was a nice finish to the meal. Easily one of the best restaurants on the West Coast. I ate here the day after they opened then again tonight. The food was perfect both times. Tonight I had the 8 oz steak and the shepherd's salad. The salad is the perfect mixture of cucumber, tomato, onion, spices, and olive oil. I could eat a 1 lb serving of that by itself. The steak is cooked and seasoned to perfection. It's presented in half centimeter thick slices fanned out across the plate and covered with one of the best mushroom sauces I've ever had. I almost never ordered dessert in a restaurant but I did tonight. The bread pudding is literally perfect. It's served slightly refrigerated which gives it a excellent consistency. It's sprinkled with cinnamon and a good size portion of toasted nuts. And best of all, the service is top-notch. Tonight I had the same server that I had a year ago. In fact, the entire staff is the same from a year ago. That's probably because they work together as a family, even though I doubt that they're all blood relatives. I happened across Ala Mediterranean Grill & Mezzes on October 31, 2021 in the early evening. I was in the area handing out little bags of trick or treat candy. I was hungry and I was right in front of the restaurant. A soft opening menu was posted on their window. The front door was opened. I peered in and asked if they were opened for business. Yes was the reply. To my surprise, the owners were the same ones who ran Extreme Pizza. I have to laugh because they remember me from their previous business. They were in the soft opening period. I asked if they were listed on yelp yet. That was still in the works. Thus, I could not do a check in and prepare a review about 1-1/2 months ago. At the time, there was only one other customer dining in. Because I still have more treat bags to hand out to the trick or treater's, I ordered the grilled vegetable kebobs to go. The wait time for my food was a tad longer than I anticipated. However, patience is a virtue. What's worth waiting is worth getting. I certainly enjoyed the grilled vegetable kebobs with the hummus and pita bread. The meal portion was generous and quite delish. The veggies were fresh and grilled to perfection. Cool place... love the vibe. Started off with the Shrimp casserole as an appetizer. Nothing deep or spectacular about it... Tasted like shrimp and tomato sauce with some mozzerella on top. Was hoping for a little twist. Had two mains... Egg plant stuffed with beef over puréed cauliflower. It tasted fine just nothing I'd order again. The beef with mushroom sauce was cooked medium (pink), and served with looked like country fried potatoes. The potatoes were tasty but a little generic. Amazing meal. We ordered the falafel, halloumi, and muhammara for starters to share, and all were perfectly portioned and flavorful beyond belief. Three of us ordered the lamb, chicken, and vegetable kebab, and each of us was complete LLC satisfied with our choice. We were all stuffed to the gills after our meal, with plenty of leftovers, but we couldn't resist trying the rice pudding, so we ordered one with three spoons. So incredibly light and refreshing. My husband and I have been to Ala Mediterranean on several occasions; alone and with friends. At this point we have sampled most of what is available on the menu and find all their food and the service to be consistently very good. The prices are also reasonable.
