I don't think I've ever been to Daniel Boone's in Tyler and I'll say that I was not disappointed. We had the Hamburger steak with green beans and mashed potatoes; and the catfish plate with fries and black eyed peas. The Black eyed peas were COOKED TO perfection. The house Margarita deserves a review on its own and the sweet tea was sweetened perfectly. I can't complain at all. We also ordered the fried green tomatoes and they taste like bigmamas. I am giving this review 4 star SOLELY because the bar House Margarita WAS A TOTAL FLOP. It was completely different than the restaurant side. This is second time to eat here. I am not impressed, the service was fine. The place had a smell about it. My partner said the bathroom smelled like it was having sewer problems. While waiting for our meal, I saw the girl dishing the beans and ice cream scratching her head, rubbing her face, and putting her fingers in her mouth and never washed her hands. The prices are average and so is the food. I ordered the chicken wings with fried okra and mashed potatoes with gravy. The wings were a little spicy , the okra was greasy and the potatoes with gravy were lukewarm. Everything needed salt and pepper. I doubt I'll be eating here again. It is clear by observing the endless crowds why this place is successful. It is steeped in country kitsch, both in decor, menus, service and the expectation of country cooking--my definition of which is rural-based dishes (not home cooking; mama's home cooking cannot be duplicated--at least my mother's, anyway). There is also the expectation that the quantity of food served would be more important than the quality thereof, and Daniel Boone's certainly lived up to this expectation. The average patron would probably not be dissatisfied with frozen onion rings, the hideously over-breaded chicken fried steak and the grilled faux steak, the dryness and tastelessness thereof only made bearable by slathering it with faux brown gravy. On a positive note, we liked the turnip greens and fried okra. Four pieces of buttered toast adorned the plate, contributing to the intended visage of excess and certainly relieving the kitchen of having to prepare some kind of homemade bread. There was, of course, the undeniable appeal of free pinto beans--which we didn't try because we were scolded by an employee for attempting to serve ourselves. (It was our first time; we didn't know.) The free Blue Bell ice cream was also appreciated, but it, too, was only accessible by the servers. We deemed the free beans and Blue Bell offering a brilliant move by the owners. The friends who recommended Boone's to us spoke of nothing else in describing the food. My husband & went here today for the first time. The ambiance was good & there were a lot of people there. We found that promising. We were wrong. After waiting several minutes for a server, she finally came & took a drink order. Mine came in a dirty glass so I couldn't drink it. We ordered a fried shrimp appetizer & we each had pork chops, mine fried his grilled. We ordered green beans & mashed potatoes & gravy for sides. After about another 20 minutes, both meals show up, no appetizer came at that time. First, the pork chops were really thin & seriously overcooked, so very dry & way too tough to eat. Cold as well, that is how the green beans & potatoes were as well, cold. My gravy was also cold, they forgot to put his on the plate. The appetizer showed up several minutes later & honestly was the best part of the meal. The server said we would not be charged for it since she had forgotten to submit that part of the order initially. I guess that's something. We won't be going back, & I don't recommend it. If I could, I would do zero stars but I will begrudgingly give it one since like I said, the appetizer was good. read more

We found this gem while on a pamper day with my daughter. The staff were wonderful from beginning to end. Junior was our server and he was knowledgeable about the selections, explained the restaurant extra features and made sure all our questions were answered. They have a Bean Bar (unique to us!) and a Blue Bell Ice Cream bar, that are both complimentary with your meal. We had chips, salsa and queso to start. My meal was the Pepper Bite Ranch Burger and it was amazing. The burger was epic and the toppings gave it a perfect bite. My daughter had Fried Critters (cute name) and said they were good. We recently went to Daniel Boone's for a birthday party. We had several in our party and it really was easy to get served. Even though we had about 10 in the party, we were able to get served fairly quickly. The food was great as it always is and the chili and the ice cream tops it off. Where else can you go to get chili and ice cream with your meal. I had the grilled fish, all you can eat, and it was great. When I wanted some more, she brought some out, three big pieces and filled me up. The baked potato was fine as well and I got plenty of butter. We eat through a lot so I give it a five. read more

I wish I could give a better review, but just can't. I got the Pioneer plate consisting of a grilled pork chop, black eyed peas, and a small salad (it came with two sides). When it was brought out there was no peas and I asked about it and the lady said it only comes with one side. I had to correct her and she did fetch some for me. The small salad (and it's definitely small) was in a tiny bowl that makes it difficult to put on the dressing and cut up the tomatoes. Luckily the peas were brought out on a plastic tray and I was able to empty the salad on it. The pork chop, sad to say, was tough and hard to cut. I had to soak the bites in my black eyed peas to eat them. I guess I should have sent it back, but didn't. Our server wasn't very attentive. Usually they will come back and inquire if everything was brought out properly by the food runner, but ours never did. Only time we saw her next was when she brought us the check. This was my first visit and I was absolutely delighted. We didn't order appetizers but very much enjoyed a start on the brown beans well seasoned with pork and black pepper and the chili beans with the bits of meat and perfect chili heat. Theyre endless along with the many flavors of Blue Bell ice cream so get as many cups as you'd like. You can start with dessert too if you so choose. ;) Also both are served up by staff at a designated area. We ordered the smaller portions entrees off the pioneer plates menu section (to taste and try more) but there was still plenty with a box of leftovers to take home. I ordered the pioneer chicken fried steak with okra and turnip greens. I could be fooled but everything tasted fresh (not frozen) and hand battered. He ordered the hamburger steak with sweet potato waffle fries and cabbage. Hands down the crisp and fresh tasting sweet potatoes were my favorite. So incredibly good! The steak was also fresh tasting, well cooked and not dry. The onions and mushrooms were cooked perfectly, none were burnt or soggy. The cabbage had chopped pork throughout and also had great fresh flavor. One huge plus is that everything was not over salted, as is the usual case with many of these items at other restaurants. You get to enjoy the main ingredients and not just the seasonings. Sweet iced tea was perfection as well. The decor is great with so many vintage and Daniel Boone things to look at. It was packed with a live band playing in the tavern but it was still comfortable and we were seated quickly. The food here is so good that I always order the same thing, chicken friend steak. They have the best homemade French fries around too. On top of it all you get a free bowl of beans while you wait see your food and Blue Bell ice cream for desert. The wait staff here is beyond compare and quickly will become your friends. The ambiance is very rustic country and they have e great bands there on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Catch Gary Patrick there if you can. He's a rare gem that you don't want to miss. Great burgers. Meat was deliciously seasoned. The mushroom swiss burger does not come with lettuce tomato Etc but server gladly added to mine. My side was sweet potato fries which where great except I expected them piping hot, fresh off the fryer and they were warmish, at best. We have been eating here for years, but I can't remember leaving a review recently. The food in general is always good, but yesterday's Pioneer chicken fried steak was the best it has been in a long time. The steak was "real" meat. The fried breading was perfectly seasoned and fried. The size is perfect. I didn't feel like I had overeaten, but with the beans, potatoes, salad, bread and ice cream-all part of the paid for meal- I was very full. Considering the present food costs in restaurants, I say this meal a bargain. Our waitress was friendly, efficient and thorough. The noise level was perfect. Those with me had no problems visiting. I came here with friends while I was visiting the area. I thought the decorations and environment were very neat. It was over the top with corny items that made you smile. As a vegetarian, I found it very difficult to find something to eat on the menu. I occasionally​ eat seafood, so I had shrimp, but it wasn't that great. I'm sure other food on the menu is good, it just doesn't match what I would eat. Everything had bacon or ham included, which made it difficult to try things there. read more
