My girlfriends and I were staying in a yurt in colfax for my bachelorette party and we definitely made the right decision grabbing a quick bite to eat here! We drank, 4/5 of us had the avocado burger (I had the volcano fries, cmon, with a name like that you have to try them) and we all had a beer. I went to this place a few years back and it was great. We returned and it was so bad that I will never give it another shot. Service: Brain dead waitresses that started to take plates away even though there was food on them and we were still eating. After eating I asked for a box, which I received. As I was boxing stuff up I was asked by another waitress if I wanted a box for my food. I guess she didn't notice me holding the big box while I shoveled food into it. A friend raved about their burgers and as we were in the area we thought it was time to try it. My husband got a Ortega chili and jalapeno burger with their onion bun and added bacon and added garlic to the fries. He said it was fine but NOT a $14 burger. A lake of juice and grease appeared in the middle of his plate and made his bun soggy. It was weird that the Ortega chili was cooked and the jalapenos were raw. which raw jalapenos aren't tasty. The "garlic" fries had shredded cheese that was mostly not melted and a small amount of maybe garlic powder or garlic salt hard to tell as there wasn't much taste. Not really what we were expecting.... they could really make it worlds better by adding fresh chopped garlic.... I had the terekai, mushrooms, Swiss burger and added pineapple for a $1 on the onion bun. It was ok. SO messy. Seriously I think they are competing to have Carl's Jrs "if it doesn't get all over the place, It doesn't belong in your face" slogan. The onion bun isn't designed to hold up to their juicy burgers. It kept falling apart and losing toppings left and right... I ate half and had to go wash my hands like 3 times in the bathroom... some wet wipes would be useful lol. The other half I ate like a pretentious jerk with a fork and knife so I didn't completely get covered again.... The fries were ok... nothing special I am glad I didn't pay extra for any specialties for the fries. Oh and if you aren't a huge fan of onions. Say NO ONIONS. All their burgers say they include lettuce, tomato and onion. We somehow missed that on the menu. But holy onion batman. Normally you can just pick them off with little effort however they seem to use thinly sliced onions like if you were going to sautee them. Sauteed onions= yummy, lots of raw onions =bleh. Don't be fooled by the looks, this place is a hidden gem for sure! Wow! I am 7 months pregnant and have very high expectations for food, as do my husband and kids... and let me tell you we loved everything we ordered. I'm hard to please with burgers or any sandwich that looks like a burger (and I've tried a lot), and my Owl chicken sandwich was perfect, and by that I mean the chicken was seasoned and cooked to perfection, nice and juicy and cut in half,and my daughters BBQ burger was the best she's ever had! I ordered mine w/sweet potato fries and they were amazing! My toddler is picky and devoured her kids fettuccine alfredo! Oh and make sure to order your burger/sandwich with the Onion Bun! THIS IS A MUST GO TO PLACE TO EAT! The service was prompt, the ambiance was quiet and clean. We are 4hours away and plan to come back whenever we go out of town this way again! Let me start my review saying they have good food(one star for that) This seems like a local place that doesn't cater to out-of-towners...Fine, good for them. (after review of reviews I see a lot of people ALSO passing through) They SAID stuff like what happened to us NEVER happens... Just So it needs to be told to others maybe thinking of going here. (After reviewing other reviews this seems to happen A LOT) In the time it took to get our food... We saw several other tables order, receive their food AND LEAVE... We waited SO LONG one waitress actually came to our table and asked "Would you like anything else today?" "Well, we haven't HAD ANYTHING YET!" Not only that, but I sat most of the time with an empty drink none of the 3 or 4 waitresses that were apparently taking care of us asked if I'd like another. So about the wait staff... Apparently, they don't have sections, like most places, apparently it's a free for all... by the time we were ready to order, we had had 3 waitresses. After they all realized they had SCREWED UP big time, they were all avoiding us.. Hence why I sat half the time with nothing to drink.. Get THIS... (This review would not be sooo horrible but for this was the last straw) FINALLY get our food, and I would have left twice by this time, but my table mates were so freaking hungry they wanted to stay, THEY DROP THE CHECK with the FOOD!! I STILL have not been asked if I need another beverage... So I finally ask one of them to speak with the owner. A woman comes up to the table and asks how she can help, never identifying herself.. As far as I know it's another waitress, But I tell her what happened, including my hour long no beverage help. and she says "Oh Were are going to reduce your bill!!!" I'm thinking, Oh really.. you mean the FULL BILL that was surreptitiously dropped at our table with NO WORD, the FULL BILL we got before we touched our meal, let alone not offered dessert or ANOTHER BEVERAGE, YOU MEAN THAT FULL BILL??? This is the same woman who told us that SOME HOW our ticket got lost and THIS NEVER HAPPENS HERE... What made me so mad, was them dropping the entire bill, thinking like most people we would just pay it and leave. Never once taking responsibility for their mistake.. It's funny that when the one waitress just THOUGHT we had finished SHE asked if we wanted anything else, but after massively screwing up, not ONE of them had the BALLS to see their job through to the end... UNBELIEVABLE! Anyway, they removed our drinks and took 15% off two of our three meals. I worked 10 years as a waitress and 30 in service industry. There's something THIS business needs to learn. That is, there are DEGREES of fuck ups... and degrees of how the business should DEAL with fuck ups. When it's THIS BAD, you write off the entire $30 to HOWEVER much a bill is and just EAT IT in HOPES that you can possibly make up for HOW EPIC-LY you FUCKED UP. I went here yesterday (feb 27) with 5 guests, all food service professionals (1 restaurant management, 2bartenders and 2 chefs) and HIGH HOPES due to the bragging of my friends on how good it was, and my experience with this restaurant did not even amount to ONE STAR. after being seated, it was 20 minutes before we were even greeted by the "beverage server," who when asked could not even report what beers were on tap. then, about 10 mins later, we were greeted by our "food server," (still no response from bev server) and told she would be right back as well. we finally got to order our meals, 10 mins later, (40 total from seat time) and then following that, got silverware and our drinks taken. 20 mins later, our meals arrive, 1. i order the pepper burger medium rare, it comes well done. with garlic fries and i get regular, undercooked fries. (when mentioned to waitress she brings my a bowl of oil with garlic in it on the side) 2. my guest orders the NY steak sandwich on onion roll with sweet pot fries and also, medium rare. it came with french fries, also well done, on regular french roll, not even toasted and falls apart. 3. sides of sauces ordered, 10 mins.... now, after food was dropped, we were not checked on for the remainder of the meal, mind you, if the restaurant was busy we would understand. we had to get up to actually get our bill from someone, when asked if management was available, there was none. when asked if their were "comment cards" there was only cards for "good comments" said jokingly, by the server with no concern to our problems... now, on an $80 tab, all professionals in the industry, to receive such "service" from an establishment, with complete disregard to the intentions of the customer when asking for management, we will probably never come here again. and it is sad, because we all wanted to "like" this place so badly after receiving such praise from friends.. read more

When returning to the bay area from Tahoe, it's two quick left turns after exiting off 80; Then: two, quick right turns to get back on the road after your meal. TJs has a diner atmosphere with a local flair (e.g. mining and wild west theme with lots of guns mounted up high on the walls). Looks like it's been here a while; the place was half-full of locals on an early Sunday afternoon. The beer list was terrible, as expected (various flavors of coors and bud). I wasn't partaking anyway, with another few hours of driving ahead of me. My burger was large and came on a nice, homemade onion roll, but it was cooked beyond well-done (I asked for medium). Dry with very little flavor. Damn shame. Our girls liked the various fried food, such as chicken strips, fish and chips and the like. But then most places have this kind of kid road food dialed-in. Not impressed. The menu looked good so we thought we'd give it a try. I ordered the Roadhouse Pepper Burger (jalapenos and Ortega chile). Well, first, it took 45 minutes to get our food. The bottleneck seems to be in the kitchen. It was supposed to come with homemade potato chips and homemade onion roll and did but the chips were soggy and the onion roll was pretty bad. It was dried out and burnt to the point of being black on the bottom. Pretty tasteless burger. My partner got a TJ's burger and the bun was a similar disaster. It seems their cook is an inexperienced near-high school aged kid. Not going back. read more

We have been going to TJ's for years...this place is a perfect spot, just enough out of town if you want to just go for a ride and end up at a good homemade potato chip spot! Their burgers are great, their french dip is yummy, I also love their tuna melt. My husband loves their burgers as well, and he fell in love with their meatloaf sandwich last time. It is always clean, the service is always good, and the chips have yet to disappoint! When heading up or down the hill...this is a great spot to grab lunch or dinner!
