Vintage photos of a mom and her daughter were on the shelf near my table.
    Eric R.

Mom's Kitchen, located in Auburn, CA is just like the name implies, as this family owned and operated restaurant serves "comfort food," just like mom used to serve at home. It's also dedicated to mothers from all over Auburn, and greater Placer County, as the walls and shelves of the spacious dining room are decorated with countless photos of local moms, from many gold country generations... As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a white board with the daily specials. You'll no doubt be impressed at the photos of many generations of local moms... there must be a couple hundred photos of moms decorating the restaurant. The dining room is large, with high tables around the walls, and lower tables in the center. Each table is set with an array of condiments, including two flavors of Tabasco sauce, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, jam and dispenser of maple syrup. Mom's is serious about breakfast! Most of the walls are painted a cheery white with red trim, and are decorated with hundreds of photos of local moms, going back several generations. The restaurant truly lives up to it's name. From the "Breakfast" section of the menu, I went with "Classic Breakfast," with hash browns and sourdough toast as my sides of choice. If you're not in the mood for hash browns, you can order country potatoes, and instead or toast, you can choose between grits or pancakes. How many restaurants in Auburn offer grits on their breakfast menu? I ordered my eggs fried sunnyside up, and they arrived perfectly, as per my order. The slab of hash brown potatoes was cooked to a perfect, medium golden brown on the outside, with the perfect amount of "crunch" for some of the outer layers. Inside, the potatoes were a perfect, tender, chewy white, just the way hash browns are meant to be. The two slices of sourdough toast were toasted perfectly, with melted butter covering each slice, which makes for a superior piece of toast. This breakfast was very simple, on the light side, but it was just what I had in mind for this Thursday morning, as I was in the mood for a light breakfast, and my "Classic Breakfast" was simply perfect. The portion size was perfect, the price was right, and the food was truly delicious. Add it all up, and you'll enjoy an amazing breakfast at Mom's Kitchen! Your mother would feel right at home at Mom's Kitchen, as the restaurant offers delicious home style cooking, served by super friendly staff, in a comfortable, spacious dining room, decorated to honor many generations of Auburn-area moms, grandmothers, great-grandmothers... and all generations. For amazing gold country dining, visit Mom's Kitchen, located on Nevada St., in Auburn, CA. My mom and I give this fine diner a solid FIVE STARS for great food and friendly service.

average at best. Tiny portion. Hardly any home potatoes. Small veggie omelette...too bad as I had high hope. And $17!

Unfortunately, the food was a disappointment, although the service was excellent. I ordered the biscuits and gravy (thankfully, just the small portion). The gravy tasted as though it was made primarily with flour, butter, and water, lacking the rich, creamy flavor I expect from good country gravy. The sausage didn't really taste like sausage and was broken into tiny, almost crumb-like pieces that added very little flavor or texture. My breakfast companion also ordered the biscuits and gravy and barely ate it. She added a blueberry pancake, but it contained very few blueberries--just a handful inside and a couple on top. The pancake itself tasted more like it came from a commercial mix than from scratch. The maple syrup also had an unusual flavor that neither of us enjoyed. On the positive side, the hot spicy cinnamon tea was absolutely delicious, and our server was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service. I always hate leaving a negative review because I know restaurants work hard. I hope this was simply an off day in the kitchen, but based on our experience, the food did not live up to its reputation.

Well, no disappointment here! It was on a Thursday morning- people were there eating, more then kept coming since it's almost lunch time. The server gal is super sweet, prompt, and came back plenty of times asking if everything is alright! I had the hot Reuben sandwich with a cup of their clam chowder while my husband had the fish and chops and a bowl of clam chowder. LOVE the soup! Nice balance of creaminess, taste and enough clams! Filling and satisfying on its own. The sandwich was also tasty- enough that I had to bring back half to take home. Husbands fish and chip which was on their special of the day was a bit disappointing- he said wasn't as tasty as he hoped and could have been a better serving size. Overall, nice place to have breakfast or brunch; cute place to chow down since liking at everyone's else's food- serving size it quite hefty! Yay! Definitely coming back more often!

I don't know what was going on back there, but the servers barely made rounds to our table, didn't even ask us if we wanted coffee, and when we asked one server to check on our food. All she said was "it would be out soon" and we heard that for the next 10 minutes each time we asked. The restaurant itself seemed pretty clean although the bathrooms definitely could use renovation. You can just tell that either they have so much business they don't care much about service or they're just not quite sure how to dial everything in to balance the front of house and kitchen delivery. If I have any specific suggestions to offer: tell your customers upfront about your kitchen wait times. Nobody wants to wait an hour for breakfast food. Make sure to follow up with your customers and ask them if they want anything else to drink besides water it seems like a really easy way to make extra money.

Happy Easter everyone!…read more Today, my daughter and I went out to breakfast here at Sweetpeas. It is located off the freeway on the corner of Bowman and Luther roads. There was plenty of parking when we pulled in. As you walk in, you seat yourself. I hadn't been here before, but my daughter has. When we sat down (table and chairs kinda place), one server got us a couple of waters while we were looking over the menu.. perfect, because that's what we love to drink. After we decided on what we wanted I got a chance to look around at the decor on the walls. It felt very family friendly with baby pictures on the walls, signs, coffee mugs along the restaurants name spelled out on the wall. It was very cute and cozy. My daughter ordered the Carnitas Omelet (Carnitas omelet with jack cheese, black beans, red onions, avocado, and black olives, topped with sour cream. Served with sourdough toast and fresh fruit) with strawberries. I ordered the Huevos Ranchero's with eggs over medium (Corn tortillas, refried beans, 2 eggs, sour cream, avocado, homemade salsa, and cheese cheese. Also served with a side of salsa.) We didn't wait long, it arrived within 10 minutes. Also, after smelling their delicious coffee, I had to have a cup! A+!!!! My daughter let me try her Carnitas Omelet. Their Carnitas is on point! It was tender and has great flavor! Her omelet was beautifully cooked, being that it was gorgeous, yellow and fluffy. My Huevos Ranchero's was crispy in the bottom as I requested. I love the topping of avocado. The only thing I would change is to get all the salsa on the side. There was quite a bit on the Huevos Ranchero's themselves and it was a little overwhelming. Next time, I'll order it completely on the side. The menu has it listed as homemade... it tasted a little bit like it was Pace chunky salsa. I didn't even touch the side of salsa that also comes in the side and I wasn't sure what the extra side of tortillas was for, but I took those home. My daughter took home about half of her 3 egg omelet and some toast. Maddy was a great server. Everyone helped each other out by doing coffee refills for all tables (not just their own), running out hot food, and helping clean up tables as people finished their plates. Great team work! We paid up in the front and we're on our way. BE SURE TO TIP YOUR SERVER FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK!

There were plenty of goodies to choose from like pastries, croissants, artisanal breads, cake slices, brioche bread with fruit, cinnamon rolls and several other products for sale. Their cake of the week was a mocha cake! It has layers of chocolate cake with an Expresso milk soak, frosted with expresso buttercream frosting with a chocolate ganache drip, topped with cocoa nuts... WOW!!! The artisanal breads are located on the side of the shop when you walk up towards the case. They have many flavors like roasted sourdough, pumpkin seed, kalamata olive, rosemary & lemon, and more! All breads are preservative free and made with organic flour. I decided to try the flourless brownie along with a ham and cheese croissant. I wanted something sweet and something savory. The flourless brownie was definitely my favorite of the two. It was rich, chocolatey, and had that creamy texture that you want from a good flourless brownie. It was a good size, too! The ham and cheese croissant itself was good and had a nice flaky texture, but I really wish there had been more ham and cheese inside. It felt a little light on the filling, especially compared to the size of the croissant. I absolutely enjoyed the flavor and flakey texture. It was a perfect crossiant, minus the ham and cheese part. The inside is cute but be prepared to get cozy with only a small amount of space to sit. Thankfully, they also have some outdoor seating if you want to hang out and enjoy your pastry there. I didn't get a picture of indoor or outdoor seating because they were a good amount of people enjoying their dining experience. I guess they know where the goodies are! Here! Overall, I liked discovering this little spot. Between the pastries, croissants, artisanal breads, and other goodies for sale, there was plenty to look at and definitely a few things I want to come back and try... and I'd for sure grab another one of those flourless brownies!
