In general I've enjoyed going to Toad Hall, but I must say a friend of mine and I experienced something quite odd and obviously racist on Friday, February 9th. Basically, a friend of mine were chatting at the front bar, not crowded at all, where my friend was standing just a little bit in the "order lane". No one was in line to order a drink and if they needed to order a drink there was plenty of space for them to do that and of course it would not have been a problem for us to slide over. This new bar-back (I know as I know most of the staff) who appeared to be from an Eastern part of the world (I can't remember his name right now) directly walked up to us and TOLD us we needed to move over for people to order. Strange there were other people sitting at the bar also partially in the "order lane". This guy did not approach them at all....Not only that but the bartender standing directly in front of us had nothing to say about us being in the way of others either. The brief conversation we had with him was so obvious to us that he had issues with people of other races. I know that both Badlands and Toad Hall have the same owner and have had a history of some racial issues.....I hope that is now starting again by hiring this guy...because he is NOT a good image for the bar. I really don't mind going back just do not want to see him. read more

Awesome karaoke place and friendly people. Prices decent. Only complaint is they don't take card.

Toad Hall is a great place for 2-for-1 happy hour. However, outside that it's not a very exciting place - more of a place to meet up with friends. We've had some fun times in Toad Hall but don't go there often anymore. We grew tired of the woo-hoo drunk girl bachelorette parties and bridal shower groups. read more

Great overflow bar when you want badlands, but don't want the crowd. By far has the best smoking room with a bar included out of any place in the Castro. Only good on the weekends, but had a great time there pride 2009. read more

Decent music, shitty bartenders, ONE for the entire bar on a Thursday night. Not too crowded but could use someone a bit more attentive.

First time in my life that a bartender actually scoffed at the tip that I left him. I thought he was joking but he made it very clear it wasn't enough. I know how to tip. You have to be pretty full of yourself to insult the customers and know you can get away with it because there are lots of guys in line behind him with cash in their hands to feed your tip jar anyway. FIRST & LAST time here. Had not been here since it was The Pendulum, but wanted to see the decor & get the feel of the new bar. Ordered a Cosmo, but was given a Cape Cod. Figured ok, no need to be fussy. No one in the bar except for me & the bartender. A "Hello, how are you doing? Are you from the City? the Moon? Timbuktu? would go far in terms of getting to know one's customer. Does the term "Repeat customer" mean anything? Got nothing but the wrong drink. The bartender was too busy reading his book to be the slightest bit sociable. That's ok cause I'm a big boy. I'm all grown up. I didn't take it personally cause I don't need a babysitter either. Finished one of two drinks & left. No need to stay in a bar where one doesn't feel welcomed. read more

Went there on a Sunday afternoon for a charity event - love day time drinking! The music was good, mostly top 40 and some throw back Lil Kim! Cute bartender, 2 for 1 drinks, nice area outside but what no mirror in the bathroom!! Love it anyways! read more

My favorite part of Toad Hall is their patio! its a great place to meet old and new friends and the inside has a nice size dance floor as well. The drinks are always strong and cheap and the bartenders are friendly. read more

This bar has amazing music. That was the draw. So fun. HOWEVER, my phone was stolen within 20 minutes of arrival. It was zipped within in my purse and I was dancing with the purse in front of me. When I mentioned to the staff that my phone had been stolen (I have never had my phone stolen in 7 years), they blamed me for not being aware. Also, I was not informed about the disclaimer... apparently, it happens to girls all the time here. If you go, do not bring any belongings. Just your dancing shoes and dagger eyes for that fool that stole my phone. read more

We were having a good time and were told to be quiet by a fat ass bartender. I thought going to a bar was a place to release the tensions of the day. I think this bartender ruined the night for a lot of us. It's going to be awhile before going there again. We're very disappointed as it's the place where we like to meet friends. What can one say about Toad Hall? For starters, their patio is great, and you can always seem to find a friendly face there. Secondly, the dance floor, albeit tiny, is fun (when you have the right partner of course). And lastly the service. At most bars in Castro you can always find a welcoming smile from many of the bartenders, however at this establishment I found one who is a cut above the rest! I was out on a thursday evening, and after throwing back a couple Vodka Tonics (extra lime of course) I noticed (to my horror) a friend had threw up on herself, the working bartender, and the man next to her. I, however, was not in this line of fire. Imagine for a moment being thrown up on...... I would be a little peeved, however, the bartender working was a complete and total gentleman. He helped my friend clean herself up as well as going the extra mile to make sure she was comfortable, and reassured her to not be embarrassed about said situation. Anyways, I made sure to get this bartenders name, as well as to yelp him, because even after this whole debacle he's always had that smile, and that great genuine attitude. I believe his name is Nathan, and not that i go to Castro too often, you can see him working here. He always says hello, and makes marvelous drinks! He is a great asset to this place, and probably the main reason i go back! He's awesome, and and great! When you see him, make sure to smile, and tip well =) read more

It's a little like Badlands, part 2, but less crowded and with less dance-able music. Still fun though, especially if you want to have a little breathing room while dancing. read more

Every time that I that my friends and I come, we always leave with great stories for the water cooler for the upcoming week, and sore feet, b/c we tore up the dance floor in our oxfords, stilettos, or super cute boots. Let me begin by saying that I have been to this bar many times since I have lived in SF, and have always had a wonderful experience. However, tonight was different. Tonight I was treated very disrespectfully by the staff, and neither I nor my friends will ever by giving this bar our business in the future. About a half hour ago, I went to meet my friends, showed my ID to a man named Toby (or Tony) working the line, and then went to pay the cover. When I realized I didn't have enough cash, I texted my friends who were inside to come out to spot me for the cover. The man working the cash register politely told me where I could find an ATM close by. Toby curtly asked me to step aside while I waited for my friends, which is fair. I stood on the sidewalk for a few moments while waiting for my friend, when he asked me with a very rude tone to move over so I wasn't blocking the sidewalk. I waited, and my friend came out and gave me the two dollars I needed. I hopped back in line, and offered the men my cash, at which point "Toby" told me I could not go inside, because I was "too intoxicated." I informed him that I was not intoxicated, and he responded by mocking my body language, which is completely inappropriate and culturally insensitive, and telling me that it didn't matter what I said or did, I wasn't going to be let into the bar. I am a woman in my mid 20s, I had three drinks throughout the night, beginning at 7:30pm. It was 1:00am when I was going into the bar (I am writing this a half hour later). I was obviously not intoxicated. Certainly less intoxicated than most of the other people in line for the bar. I tried to reason with "Toby" seeking an explanation as to why I was not being allowed into the bar, as a patron who has given that bar my services for several years. Instead of treating me with respect and having a reasoned conversation with me, he threatened to call "Castro Patrol" and forced me to leave the premises. I have never been treated with such disrespect in my life, and I will be contacting Toad Hall to ensure that the manager knows his rude bouncer has cost the bar a lifelong patron. I am very disappointed, and feel that I was discriminated against as a woman, particularly when "Toby" mocked my body language, which was extremely offensive and unprofessional. When I politely asked why I wasn't being allowed in, and what I could do differently in the future, he told me to "look less drunk." Obviously the person writing this review is not "drunk." He had the nerve to say that to my face as I stood in front of him calmly asking him what the problem was, and what I could do differently. Needless to say, I will never be returning to Toad Hall. I have never been subjected to this kind of treatment in my life. I have never been mocked in this way in my life. And as an influential professional woman in SF I will make sure my friends and social circles choose other bars in the area. Your loss, Toad Hall. I suggest you reconsider your employees. read more

After the rude treatment across the street this place was GREAT. good music and very friendly bartenders. He even offered to make my drinks while I went to the atm, so they'd be ready when I returned. And I liked the mixed crowd, a wide age range with very little attitude. And out of such a huge crowd, I only saw one person falling down drunk! Everyone else was not just coherent, but friendly and fun! I'll go back again for sure. read more

FINALLY a new place to go in the Castro! Brand new. I think Toad Hall gets better each week. The drinks are definitely getting stronger and now 2 for 1 applies to all mixed drinks and not just well. The patio is gorgeous and brand new and they are finally starting to put some plants out there. The crowd is pretty good - mixed as far as age and race. I don't think that the bar has found its niche yet. The Sun has older blue collar and retail people, the Mix is even "earthier", and 440 is ... well ... daddies. I don't care for the name but it is the best bar in the Castro as far as I'm concerned. read more

My partner, two other friends and I, men of color (predominantly of African-American descent and none under 40) approached the bar and were asked for our IDs at about 7:00pm on a Friday night, (10-23-2015). This is/was not alarming at the time. Subsequently and upon closer observation, it was noted the doorman was not performing this duty uniformly with certain patrons and especially with those who were not people of color. The possibility exists the doorman was familiar with certain patrons and not others. I mentioned this perceived inequity to members of the bar staff and informed the doorman he should be performing the ID check indifferently to all patrons to avoid the appearance of selective admittance. He became defensive and said he always performs said action with all patrons. I was/am disappointed with the bar's reaction and left. In these times, when it appears certain people of color may be treated in/unequally, I would recommend some sensitization to the staff at this bar. read more
