Cute hole-in-the-wall! Closer to Cornell than the Frosty Cow! Lots of flavor options, but sad you can't get more than one flavor. I tried the custard and it was delicious! Not as eggy tasting as I expected... actually not eggy tasting at all. Still creamy and sweet. Large portions. Also tried the cotton candy hard icecream which was good but not my type of flavor. Make sure to check out the toad tire garden when you're here! A few benches in the garden for sitting too. Overall, I would recommend! Not quite as polished as the Frosty Cow, but it has its own Ithacan charm about it. read more

We have been here before and they have a broad menu. Unfortunately when we arrived neither of the ice cream attendants acknowledged us. The woman who ultimately served us gave me the wrong order claiming I ordered a twist. I did not. When I restated my order she got snippy and said I should order a certain way. I wanted a specific flavor and asked for that again. She brought another order and it was vanilla not the flavor I ordered after pressuring us to order something else. I returned the ice cream and she claimed angrily that people can't taste that flavor. It was vanilla there was no flavor. I returned it and asked to be reimbursed. When we were leaving she immediately gave us mean us and started talking about us. It's unfortunate we were really looking forward to ice cream on a nice day. The customer service and claims concerning the flavors turned into gaslighting and an uncomfortable situation for our family. read more

A quaint ice cream shop off the side of the road with outdoor seating. The lovely lady at the counter is be try friendly and welcoming too. There are so many flavors of soft serve, hard ice cream, sundaes, and shakes that there is definitely one for everyone. I tried their hard ice cream: Nana's Banana Cream Pie, Rush Hour, and Ashby's Bear Claw. The Banana Cream Pie was very artificially flavored banana. I was hoping for a more subtle banana flavor with custard and vanilla crackers vibe, but it was still very creamy. Rush Hour consisted of coffee ice cream with caramel swirl and chocolate coffee truffles. It was heavily coffee-flavored with perfect balance of sweetness with the caramel swirl, and truffle pieces added good texture. Ashby's Bear Claw included dark chocolate ice cream with caramel swirl and chocolate-covered cashews. The dark chocolate ice cream was definitely the star of the show and even a bit overpowering in which the caramel swirl got lost. The portion I had didn't get any cashews, but I'm sure it would've added another dimension to the overall ice cream. Overall, this is a staple ice cream place and would come again to try their soft serve next time. I highly recommend trying it out! read more

An Oasis is an understatement. This roadside stand is amazing and what variety. We can't get over how many soft serve options are available. Amazing selection of ice cream- other soft serve and hard packed with unique flavors. My husband had the cannoli which tasted "just like a cannoli" & the coffee. The Ithaca area is blessed with many great ice cream joints, but Toad's is a family favorite in part due to their old-time ice cream stand feel and the generous portions. They have an amazing diversity of flavors for both soft serve and Gifford's traditional scoop ice cream that is sure to please. I opted for the latter, and got Maine Camp Coffee and Wicked Good Chocolate scoops. The friends I went with had P&B S'mores & Cannoli, Piece of Cake and Sponge Candy, Fireball, and Moose Tracks and Banana Cream Pie. Be careful with what size you get. The "small" is actually four scoops of ice cream -- so be prepared! "Kiddie" is the unlisted 'normal' two scoops of ice cream, and 'tiny' is one small scoop of ice cream. I've never gone beyond small, but they can get quite huge. Toad's Too is also closed when the weather gets colder, so enjoy it as a nice summer treat. read more

Toads too is not much to look at but is a stop I would highly recommend. They also win my vote for the weirdest name for an ice cream shop ever. They have so many different flavors of ice cream. Including some I've never seen before. I tried their main coffee, and their cannoli ice cream which had crunchy pieces of cannoli shell in a ricotta flavored ice cream with dark chocolate chips. Both were fabulous. No one in my family tried their soft serve but it appears they mix it for you when you order it. They had at least 35 different flavors of Soft Serve on top of all of their 20 other flavors of regular ice cream. The portions here are gigantic. Everyone in my family got the kiddy size and it's two scoops. And perhaps the best part of toads too was our bill was $7 for four ice cream's. Seven dollars. If you're rolling through upstate New York, don't miss toadstool you won't forget it. read more

While staying in Freeville for the weekend, my boyfriend and I visited this little stand twice and both times we enjoyed their creamy soft serve flavors. There sure are a lot of options! Even in the dog days of summer, the had pumpkin ice cream, which my boyfriend and I freaked out over. And it was so yummy! It had all the right spices and the taste was incredible. That was the first time we went. The second time we got English toffee soft serve with marshmallow sauce and rainbow sprinkles. We also liked this one, even though the English toffee flavor was kind of mild. The stand itself is well run and full of character. There's a little pond next to it decorated with garden creatures and the tables are old fashioned. They clearly love their regulars because an older gentleman stopped by, which immediately caused the owner to say, "Black cherry, right?" I suggest this place whole heartedly. read more

Tucked away is Freeville, this old-school, family run ice cream stand has a large selection of ice cream from Gifford's, Basset's, and Perry's for super cheap. The offerings from Gifford's are typically my favourite, with pumpkin, apple pie, and blue berry (with real Maine blueberries) being the best flavours. This place is dripping with character and looks like it hasn't changed in 30 yeras; I love everything about it! Forget about Purity, pass on Cayuga Creamery, Toad's Too is the best ice cream shop in the Cayuga Lake area! read more

I'll just say it. I love soft serve ice cream. Chocolate vanilla twist with chocolate sprinkles is my favourite. (I used to go for cherry dip, but that was back in my college days when I was more adventurous.) :) Having grown up in Syracuse, we had many options for soft serve ice cream and custard. My wife grew up downstate, where there were local favourites as well. Living outside Ithaca for the past decade or so, we both bemoaned the lack of good, more-than-just-vanilla-from-McDonald's soft serve. (Purity is wonderful for hard ice cream, but when you're looking for soft serve, Purity just won't do.) I've driven through "downtown" Freeville at least 500 times, as I used to commute from Syracuse to Cornell. I had passed the signs for Toad's Too, but given the sketchy sounding name, had never really considered giving it a try. Then one day my wife learned from a friend who lives around the corner that she and her husband visit Toad's Too for ice cream! We decided to give it a try. Don't be put off by the looks of the place. The ice cream was so very tasty, and the portions were tremendous. Don't get a large unless you're ready for 9" of ice cream atop the cone! The woman who runs the place is very personable, and prices are reasonable as well. We ended up going back more times that I or my waistline would care to admit, and were truly sad when they closed for the fall/winter a few weeks ago. We'll definitely be back again once the warmer weather returns! read more
