We have been taking our dog here for nearly 15 years. As he's aged, he's developed allergies and regular age related declines. All this is to say that he's gone from once a year visits to more frequent ones. The vet has been amazing. I call our little dog "the bitey jerk". He's super grumpy in his old age and has to be muzzled because he threatens to bite. Doesn't want to be touched, I can relate! The vet is patient with our old man and understanding. Yes. Vet care is pricey but have you shopped around? Most vets in the area are more expensive. I've never had an issue with the staff. I'm positive that if those complaining had actually said something to the vet? The issue would have been resolved. Also, why leave negative reviews because a business expects payment at time of service. Huh? This is a great local vet and deserves much better than the couple of low ratings. read more

Dr Averritt removed my cats cancerous tumor after another vet tried to aspirate it and then wanted to biopsy it ... Went to TAC Dr Averritt said let's cut it out..and surgery was scheduled . Vets are okay with decent prices! However neither of them can write, why even give me a paper with instructions and what happened in the office if I cant read it!?! Older white lady at the desk must hate her job, constantly sighing and complaining. However the younger one is super sweet and helpful! Only bad experiences with the older lady at the desk. The after hours Answering service is wack though. What is the point of paying someone to answer the phone to tell us they cant help us. I asked if I should take my animal to the vet and she said "I cant give you any medical advice." My husband called today (5/17/24 @6pm) asking how much for the heart-worm prevention, lady stated that she did not know and does not get paid enough to answer for the vet. The good is the Veterinarians are amazing and very good with my moms animals . My mom has been going to Dr Averitt for over 20 years and she has always treated her animals amazing . The bad is the front staff a lot of them are rude and very empathetic. My mom is a senior citizen and only gets paid once a month and her cat got sick and I took him in . They saw him and everything and before they were seeing him I told them I could not pay them that day . Well when the vist was over they requested payment and I looked at them and said " I told you I could not pay today " they looked at me like I had 4 heads and showed no empathy at all. They use to set up payment plans for my mother but no longer . So my biggest issue is the front staff. Dr Averitt needs to hire more compassionate and empathetic employees !!!!! read more

I don't usually write reviews for businesses; however, I was surfing the net and found these reviews concerning Toano Animal Clinic (TAC). Therefore, I decided it was time for me to comment. We have been taking our dogs to Dr. Averitt for over 20 years. We have always been pleased with the care our dogs have received. There have been several times when we have had an emergency after hours and Dr. Averitt has either stayed late or met us at the clinic to care for our pet. For instance, one night, one of my dogs had a nosebleed. Knowing TAC was closed, I called several clinics advertising emergency services to no avail. I called TAC answering services in hopes of getting help. The service called Dr. Averitt who told us she would meet us at her clinic. She spent several hours with our dog, we even discussed blood transfusions. Unfortunately, after performing surgery it was discussed she had a nasal tumor, and we chose euthanasia. On other occassions, when she had concerns outside of her knowledge base, she has either researched the issue, contacted Virginia Tech or the University of Tennessee Vet Schools, or referred our pet to speciality veternarians (opthalmology, cardiology and allergists). I am sorry that some are not pleased with the services, and I am wondering if you discussed your concerns with Dr. Averitt. I know she would be upset and rectify these issues if she were made aware. Dr. Averitt is a very compassionate and professional vet. We have always found Dr. Averitt and her team to be very receptive to concerns, sending pets for specialty services, up to date and less expensive treatments, offering help to the car, home visits, and reasonable prices. If you are looking for a vet that has a fancy waiting room or offices, Dr. Averitt is not the vet for your pet. However, if you are looking for compassion, professionalism, and up to date care TAC is the right place for your pet. read more

We put out dogs in for boarding Saturday for one night and advised them that we would be picking up our dogs on Sunday, they informed us that we could pick the dogs up at 8am or 5pm and the fee would be 15 dollars additional to the cost of the boarding we told them 5pm would be good. We showed up at 4:30pm on Sunday and waited in the parking lot until 5:15 but no show we then call the answering service they had no luck getting in touch with anyone that was on call. Makes me wonder how well they take care of dogs on weekends while they are in boarding, they are obviously not taking them out to use the restroom and probably haven't even given them food for the day. We will be back tomorrow to pick our dogs up and retrieve their medical records so we can try another veterinarian. If you care anything about your pet's well-being, don't bring them here. read more

Dr Averitt takes great care of my 11 year old Yorkie. She's very reasonable and usually available when you need to get in. Her practice is not very convenient to southern Williamsburg, but her thoroughness, price, and availability make it worth the trip. Also, she does not charge for follow-up visits unlike other vets that I've encountered! read more

Well, my dog had a medical scare in the middle of the night. Toana Animal Clinic is closed after regular business hours, but their answering service promptly referred us to the Animal Emergency Center (AEC). The morning after we took our dog to the AEC, Dr. Averitt called to follow-up and answer any additional questions we had. It was great hearing from her right away, knowing she took the time to make sure we were all doing okay and to fill in all of the blanks. Since we learned that our dog was suffering from a long-term condition, we scheduled an appointment with Toano for more thorough testing and consultations. Things are looking up! I'm very happy and comforted to have a caring vet and clinic on our side...adding a star to the initial review! read more

Called two hours before closing with a very sick dog and was already a patient for over a year and they would not take my dog . They said it was too close to closing and they were full and it was a little before ten and they close at noon. Went to a another vet who took us even though we were a new patient after explaining how sick our dog was and what was going on. Not going back to this clinic again. The new Veterinarian was very kind and spent two hours with our dog and made arrangements in Richmond for dog to have surgery. We lucky we found him . read more

i dropped my dog off at 8 am for a spay and a few yearly things to be done. i called them around 3 pm to check on my dog because i had not heard from them, they proceeded to tell me that they had not done my dog's surgery because there were emergencies that came in ( i have worked at vet offices/clinics as well as many other doctors offices ) whenever we had an emergency pt we would fit them into our scheduled patients! i am very disappointed in toano animal clinic for not contacting me to come get my dog after them knowing they wouldn't be able to complete her surgery, letting her stay in a kennel all day and did not give her any food after she had gone npo since 10 pm the night before. as for the lady at the front desk who was extremely rude after i apologized for being upset on the phone with her yelling across the office saying i was not allowed to reschedule and throwing my dogs leash at me was totally uncalled for. read more

Dr. Averitte performed a surgery on my aunts puppy and convinced my aunt it was no problem and an easy quick and painless procedure. Well, they killed the puppy by giving it too much anesthesia. Instead of telling my aunt in person about what happen they did it over the phone. No kind of reimbursement was provided, but out of the goodness in their hearts they didn't charge my aunt for the surgery. read more

I've been using Toano Animal Clinic for years now, and have had nothing but good experiences there...they treat myself and my pet very good. Having said that, I think with ALL care, whether it be for ourselves or our fur babies, being pro-active and staying informed (knowing when shots are due, etc.,) is important. Don't count on the clinic to remind you - they have SO many pets to keep track of, and you only have yours....take care of her/him! read more

I got the name of the Toano Animal Clinic and Dr. Averitt from the Heritage Humane Society where we got our 2 cats. From the beginning, Dr. Averitt has been one of the best vets we've ever used. She is caring, knowledgeable, and isn't always looking to spend more of your money unnecessarily, as some vets do. I always feel confident when I bring our cats there. It's worth the extra few minutes that it takes to drive from Williamsburg. read more

Dr. Averitt and her staff are outstanding. We have been bringing our pets (dog and cats) to Dr. Averitt for years now, and I find it impressive that her staff has remained consistent (sometimes you see a great deal of turnover in the front office, but not at Toano) and they are all professional and sweet. We originally went to a different vet in town, but began to get frustrated after they renovated the building, put in big screen tvs, and then started pushing expensive products, possibly to help finance the new accommodations. We adopted a cat from an organization that worked with Dr. Averitt and the organization received a steep discount or even free care. We decided to keep bringing that cat to Dr. Averitt, and then eventually moved all of our pets to Toano Animal Clinic (even though we live in Williamsburg, it is worth the short drive out to Toano). Dr. Averitt provides compassionate and extremely competent care. She does not push expensive vitamins or unnecessary procedures. The facility is not fancy, but it does not need to be. We want excellent care for our pets, not designer digs. Dr. Averitt makes recommendations and reviews all the options, without pushing in one particular direction. I really cannot say enough about how great Toano Animal Clinic is. read more

Services were good BUT.... Their bottom line might be more important to them than their customer relations and animal care. A "Senior Package" for a year brought me to the clinic. It included great discounts and promised follow up office visits and X-rays for free at the next annual visit. I take my dog in every year at tax refund time. When I called for the next years appointment I was 2 1/2 weeks past the one year contract date for the Senior Package. They don't send out reminders that the one year mark is approaching. Out of luck for this year - the appointment and x-rays promised for this year's visit would not be honored because I was late by a couple weeks in scheduling the visit. They're within in their rights, but it seems that perhaps they're more concerned about the bottom line than maintaining customer relations and their clients health. I am on a VERY tight budget and this is a VERY big deal to my pocketbook. Like most everyone else I want the best care I can possibly afford for my pet, I lost out on this deal. I gave them the opportunity to work this out and come up with some kind of compromise but they declined. Buyer BEWARE - and if buying a package make sure you write the expiration date in big letters on your calendar. read more
