When asked where she normally went for vet care, she said Salty Paws near where she lives in Hampton. Since I live in VA Beach, I asked my son to drive the 45mins north to take Tiggers to the vet. Visit #1 on 6 Nov: $500, said needed some shots and flea treatment and to come back 10 Nov. Attempted Visit #2: Major wreck and fire on the 64. Took my son over an hour to drive from VA Beach For Tiggers scheduled appointment and turned away for being FOUR minutes late. FOUR! after an hour drive across town. Told to come back the next day. By the way, I am a Navy healthcare provider and it is preposterous to turn someone away prior to 15minutes past the scheduled appointment time as we take into consideration traffic and travel throughout the Hampton Roads area. Visit #3 11 Nov: another $500 for them to put a straw through his ear, give some more meds and scheduled follow up 2 weeks later. 1 week later and the poor cat is still miserable without any obvious decrease of swelling to his ear. Blood is matted into his fur down the side of his face. So we decide to take him to a local vet in VA Beach. We simply can't wait another week because we're really concerned for the misery of this cat. Being turned away for being 4mins late the last time really ticked me off and I was no longer feeling like I wanted to continue care with Salty Paws at this point. Local Vet takes one look at Tiggers and exclaims: What the HECK is that???!!! Do you mind if we take a picture so we can train our vets on what NOT to do??? The straw that was supposed 'drain' his ear, literally went straight through-- so how the heck was this providing any drainage?? The blood and pus seeped out from around the straw, not through it. And of course another $500 for that visit. Vet pulled out the tube, gave some more meds plus an antibiotic (since Salty Paws didn't give him one despite being at major risk for infection) fully drained the ear, kindly shaved the area where the fur had gotten filled with blood, and then had to stitch up the mangled mess that was done at Salty Paws. The Vet was also incredibly concerned that Salty Paws didn't have any detailed medical documentation about the treatment they provided Tiggers. For human healthcare this would be considered MALPRACTICE. This place felt like they were more concerned with a cash grab than actually improving the health of my cat in swift, compassionate way. Tiggers (now my family cat adopted from my sister) got his stitches out today and is feeling much better.

I called Coastal and they said we can bring him in. It had stopped bleeding by the time we got there, and all we got was a cone, some medication and were told to follow up with our vet. Which I told the Dr that we didn't have a vet here... we just moved. 2 days prior. We don't even have anything to sit on in our home still. We couldn't bring him back for a check up. They wouldn't remove it either. So we went back home. At some point on the way home it opened again. When we got back home(mind you, we're already 45min to an hour away) I opened the back door to get him and there was blood everywhere. We ran inside and placed him in the tub and tried to get the bleeding to stop. It would not stop this time. We called them back and they said to come back. We got back there and I guess because he was actively bleeding, or the bloody towel we had wrapped around his paw, they took him overnight for surgery. That was irritating. I wish they would have helped us the first time we were there. The staff was amazing. I loved them. They treated my old man very very well. They were very kind and answered all the questions we had. The only thing that I wish would have happened was being kept in contact. They called me the following morning to tell us that he was going to go into surgery around noon, but someone would call us before he went into surgery, after surgery, and then again to call us to let us know when we could come and get us. That didn't happen. Again, we JUST moved into our home so we didn't get a lot done because we were waiting on them. Which is fine, but I had to call around noon, he hadn't gone into surgery yet. I called around 3/4pm, he was about to go into surgery and they were thinking about pick up time around 8:30-9pm, but they'd call back to confirm. I had to call back around 745 and they confirmed to come and get him between 8:30-9pm.

CARE is a closer ER vet to me, and the ER vet I have used in the past, but on Tuesday night at 1:30 AM when my dog had been unproductively retching, pacing and licking for over an hour, they were closed. AEC was a 40 minute drive, but worth every minute of that drive. I called ahead to let them know I was coming and the present symptoms. When I arrived, Bear was acting totally normal, but out of precaution (and to save going home and coming right back around) I asked to still have some diagnostics run. AEC was upfront about the high and low end costs (very reasonable compared to past ER visits) and the staff was kind, understanding and informative. Dr. Crist took time to walk me through Bear's radiographs and explain what I was seeing as well as answer all of my lingering questions. As a dog mom to another who has chronic gastritis managed with meds and a prescription diet, I have spent a lot of time discussing the dog digestive tract and GI issues with the regular vet and Dr. ChatGPT. Dr. Crist answered all of my questions with clear, thorough explanations. I didn't get names in the moment, but the three vet techs I interacted with were also kind and knowledgeable, even at 3 am when most normal humans are fast asleep! I can't even say it's an emergency vet if you have to pay a paywall off $125 just to be seen. i couldn't imaging going to the ER and being told to call a hotline while experiencing an active emergency. Im very displeased with our experience and I would lovvvve to hear back from management on how this policy is productive. I even called back at 4:30am to get him seen. The front desk gave me a different poison control number this one a bit less expensive than the first $98. When we finally got ahold of someone on the hotline they told us to come get seen and gave us a red number. Nothing about this process made any sense. I think this policy has more to do with greed than actually helping our pets.

After speaking to a few area vet clinics who would not take the time to discuss euthanasia, we were able to speak to Dr. Bates in person that afternoon with our dog. He was the most caring, knowledgeable, and gentle vet possible. He gave us options of treatment, which would not last long, but he explained a few procedures to us. After making the final decision to euthanize our dog, she never felt a thing and passed away peacefully. The clinic personnel took care of her remains and made the arrangements to send them back to us at home. They went above and beyond making sure we received them properly and they were handled carefully. We're so lucky we found the people at Abington clinic in Hayes who so thoroughly took care of our baby. Thank you for providing us peace of mind and respect.
