The food was really tasty! Our favorites were the chicken BBQ bacon toasty, tomato basil soup (some of the best we had), and the chicken Gouda apple. The ambiance and service speed could have been better, but the food hit the spot and was enjoyed by the entire family! Sandwiches and soup could be for dine in or to-go. The building has no trash so there was 10 tables sitting with the leftover trash from the previous customers which felt a little weird that nothing could be cleaned up self service or why it wasn't getting picked up on going. Stopped here for lunch after reading some reviews. It was quite busy when we came so seating wasn't very plentiful downstairs and some empty tables were dirty as there's not a place to put your trash when you're done or place your containers and glasses. There appears to be an upstairs but we weren't aware of that and didn't check it out and think signage should be available. It's cozy inside with minimal decorations. I digress.....we ordered at the counter which was a pretty quick process and proceeded to put together a few tables for the 6 of us. We waited a bit for our food but it wasn't a hugely long wait. The food was great! Toasted sandwiches with your choice of bread and chips. Loved the flavors and it wasn't overwhelming portions. All in all a nice place to stop for lunch. read more

Outstanding grilled cheese for kids, adults, and vegans. The bread that they use is a wheat bread that has to be house made as it's paired perfectly with their sandwiches. It's light and flavorful that melts in your mouth as it's seared with butter on the grill(vegan butter as an option for my wife as well). Even our five yr old gave his signature double thumbs up. We were on spring break up in Duluth this past week and were looking for a lighter lunch to keep the kids going until dinner time. My wife found Toasty's and we dropped in Friday around 1:00 with a tantruming 3yo in tow. As I was trying to get my bearings the cook comes out with a little paper basket filled with apple slices and croutons and gives it to my little girl saying this might help. Her face lit up and the tantrum stopped. As a parent I just have to say that was an awesome first impression. The shop itself is a pretty nondescript. As an office worker myself it's the kind of place that I would immediately peg as catering mostly the office crowd. There's a few tables right in the lobby next to the shop and more tables upstairs. Really felt like a nice quiet space when we got there. Probably a lot busier during prime lunch hours. We ordered soup and sandwiches. The bread slices used for our sandwiches were huge and delicious. The tomato basil soup was warm, creamy, and delicious. When my little man decided he wanted apple slices too the gal who brought us our food went back and brought them to us and told me just to settle up before we left. The staff was incredibly nice, friendly, and super helpful throughout our brief visit. Great little place, great food! Had a turkey salad with homemade ranch dressing that was great. Lettuce and everything was cut up to make easy to eat served on a plate which made it easy to eat. This place was definitely a wonderful surprise to eat at. My partner wanted to go there one day, and when he told me it was a sandwich shop I was kind of iffy. I just wasn't in the mood for a sandwich that day. Luckily he informed me that Toasty's also serves burgers so that sold me. The atmosphere is very laid back at Toasty's. You seat yourself, order at the front when you want, and get your own water. The workers are friendly and even went so far as to ask how my weekend had been. That's super rare these days. The restaurant itself doesn't look anything special. Everything is very basic, from the chairs and tables to the utensils, but really that doesn't matter as long as the food is good. I had a very tough time deciding what burger to try. They all sounded tasty and some were relatively unique. I closed my eyes, sighed, and bit the bullet and chose. I went with the Swiss, Gorgonzola, and fresh oregano. I was a little sad that they serve potato chips instead of fries, but I went with the tortilla chips. The food came relatively quickly and when it was set down in front of me I was not impressed. It was a little small for the price, but it looked like a cute burger. I grabbed a tortilla chip, chomped on it, and immediately fell in love because the tortilla chips are just nacho chips you get from movie theaters and I fudgen love those! Now for the burger. It was easy to pick up because of the smaller size. To be honest I've been getting tired of using a knife and fork to eat burgers because of the hackneyed assembly. The bun felt perfectly soft and I could tell that it was fresh. I bit into the burger and fell in love. The best way I can describe Toasty's burgers are that they are fresh. They are one of the freshest tasting burgers I've had. Every ingredient tasted fresh, the meat, the oregano, the bun and cheese. The balsamic fig glaze was definitely the most prominent flavor. It gave the burger a sweetness to it, but that was quickly complimented by the salty cheeses. The cheese was gooey, and not overpowering. The meat tasted like they just got it from a butcher. The mushrooms and onions were portioned perfectly so nothing was sliding off the burger. Excellent burger! After that burger I went back and got the Bruschetta Burger. I didn't think I could get a burger that tasted fresher, but I was wrong. The basil in this burger was in harmony with the tomato and mozzarella. It really did taste like I was eating bruschetta with a beef patty. Hands down one of my new favorite burgers. The price is a little much at Toasty's, but give it a chance and I don't think you'll be disappointed. The quality of the food is definitely worth the price. I love eating cheaper fast food burgers, but sometimes I need a fresh, delicious burger to not feel so bad about eating. read more

Best customer service I've ever received. The owners are awesome so friendly and welcoming. Sometimes it gets very busy but I think that's anywhere good around lunch time. I'm addicted to their fries and it's such a bonus that they have dairy/ gluten free options. My daughter can't have dairy and she honestly asks for grilled cheese from Toasty's almost every other night. This has been the best gem I've found while living in Duluth! Good variety of grilled cheese style sandwiches. Fresh ingredients make them tasty. I had the bruschetta grilled cheese. I really liked the balance of the tomato, basil and balsamic. The bread was basic wheat bread - thin slices grilled perfectly and stayed crunchy - never got soggy which was really impressive. I also got the French onion soup. Flavor was good but the "crouton" on top was completely soggy. That's why I gave it a 3 rating rather than a 4. I would definitely try more of the sandwiches. read more

I usually get the Arriba Arriba with tortilla chips & tomato basil soup, which is equally amazing, but the burger really hit the spot today. I also love that I frequently see the owners working hard, cooking food, interacting with customers, delivering... it shows they really care about the success of their business. Pricewise, yes, it's a little spendy, but it's absolutely worth every penny. They do not mandate that employees wear masks. When called out on it they told to this customer to go F**k himself instead of taking common sense precautions in the middle of a pandemic. I have been to Toasty's on several previous family trips but their disrespect for a customer and more importantly, disregard for public health have lost my business moving forward. There are many other restaurants in Duluth that require their employees to wear masks. Protect yourself and your community and buy a sandwich somewhere else. read more

I stopped in with a group of coworkers while attending a conference in Duluth for a quick bite. Except this wasn't that quick of a bite. We came in during lunch time and the place wasn't very full, there was plenty of room. The place looked very quaint and clean. I was thinking hipster joint as soon as you walk inside. You order your food at the register and they bring it out to you. This is a sandwich shop and the selection was pretty good. I don't dabble in vegetarian or organic foods but they had plenty of options. I had the grilled cheeseburger with potato chips. The cheeseburger was decent. The food here is made to order so don't come in if you're pressed for time. The service was fine but it was our fault for coming in when we were in a rush. But if you want a decent burger then come by. My other co-workers had their sandwiches and gobbled them all down. No complaints. read more

On a recent trip into Duluth from Ironwood, MI we drove past their Hillside location on our way back from Mt Royal market. My husband exclaimed as we drove by, "OH MY GOD, A GRILLED CHEESE SHOP!!". We kept on as it wasn't quite dinner time for us and our 3 kids in the back seat. We started talking about what a GREAT concept that was and too bad for us because we don't really do dairy.....my husband will eat cheese on occasion. Cut to a couple hours later... after bailing on a totally over crowded Bentleyville...we called Pizza Luce to see how long of a wait for a table it would be.... 1+ hours.....ok.... let me look up that Toasty's ... just in case maybe they have vegan options. Turns out they can make just about any of their sandwiches vegan! And yes they are still open. We got that about 20 mins before they close...which I am always a little self conscious about, being in food service myself since I was a teenager. But they said no problem come on in. Our kids were immediately offered some homemade play dough to keep themselves busy while our food was being prepared. I had the bruschetta grilled cheese and my husband had something with avocado and cilantro?? My middle daughter request a custom job... with chickpeas and lettuce LOL and they obliged. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The ambiance was clean and modern. Prices were reasonable and on top of it so many of their ingredients are organic or local. We even got to meet the owners who are obviously passionate about ethical, sustainable food. We will return for sure. read more
