Dr. Johnson was extremely friendly. He examined me quickly and offered to inject parts of my face with a solution to help reduce the inflammation of my acne. While he was friendly, he didnt eliminate my acne. The areas of acne he injected reduced the swelling, but then it got worse two days later. Furthermore, I just got the bill from my insurance, and what I thought would only be a $35 copay ended up being $100 because I was charged for the injection, and even the solution they used on me! If I had known, I would have refused to injection. During this visit, the doctor told me he was going to have me use a 20% benzoyl peroxide lotion and that I could get it from the receptionist. Apparently this lotion is homemade and costs $35 out of pocket (not covered by insurance at all and the office takes all the profit). This lotion is no joke, it will burn your face off. I was also prescribed Doryx which would be approximately $300 with my insurance coverage. The doctor gave me some coupon that reduced it to $25 (but I had to call to activate the coupon by giving all my personal info). The worst part was the pills didnt work!!! They were huge and hard to swallow, even when cut in half. I looked up Doryx online and it says for acne, it must be taken for 12 weeks. Seriously? Three months of an antibiotic?? I've been to many dermatologists and it never took that long to clear my face with antibiotics. He was probably trying to promote the medicine to get $$ out of it. I went to my regular doctor last week and asked for help with my face since Dr. Johnson didnt do it for me. My doctor prescribed me some pills and within days I've noticed a difference. The cost of the medicine with my insurance? $5!!!!! Next time I'm not going to a specialist. I wont be back here again. read more

Dr Johnson is an awesome dermatologist. I went to him for probably 6 or 7 years before moving out of state. His office at Derm + Aesthetics is challenging because the support staff made being a patient there difficult, but I was willing to overlook that just because he is a fantastic physician. I started out at his office in Northbrook, and eventually went back to his office in Northbrook when D+A stopped taking my insurance. Never had an issue with that office over the years, so if you don't mind driving the burbs- it's absolutely worth it. read more

I can't speak on behalf of his medical attention but my experience with the scheduling and billing has been a shitshow. I scheduled an appt in April for.....June or July. Yes he's that booked. I got a call saying he wouldn't be in and had to reschedule. I reschedule to the end of July. The beginning of July I received another call to reschedule. Then it happened a 3rd. I finally just gave up and canceled on/around 7/10. This week I got a statement in the mail stating I owed a $50 no show fee. I called billing and left a voicemail. The message stated they would call back in 1 business day. 2 days later she called back saying they waived the fee. Although I appreciate the waived fee, I didn't really incur it in the first place. I'm intrigued to see Dr. Johnson per all his positive reviews but I don't appreciate the scheduling hassle. read more

The office was very comfortable and though I was early, I did not get called for my appointment until 10-15min after it was scheduled. Dr. Johnson was friendly and thorough. He prescribed 4 things for my acne.. two of which were in-house and two were prescriptions. I did not understand where to pick up the in-house treatments so I did not get them. However, the prescriptions were cheap and effective. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because of a conversation I heard between Dr. Johnson and his nurse in the hallway when I was waiting in the exam room. Dr. Johnson kindly asked his nurse to order more supplies and her response was soaking with contempt and bitchy-ness. She did not think the level of supplies was a problem and the order was coming in soon. Dr. Johnson kept a friendly tone but the nurse continued to talk like she wanted to get fired! I was amazed an employee could get away with talking to a doctor like that. I just thought it was rather unprofessional to let a patient hear an exchange like this. read more

Dr. Johnson, aside from being smart, thorough and quick, he's also super cute. Shallow? Maybe. But if I'm going to the doctor, I'd prefer something enjoyable out of it. I first went to Dr. Johnson about a year ago for a mole check. Like others have said, I had to make the appointment about a month and a half in advance, which was fine (and now I know for future appointments). The office is big and clean and the front desk attendant and nurses are super friendly. I had to wait awhile, but it wasn't a huge deal and was in and out fairly quickly after discussing my medical history, etc. Typical first appointment information. I felt like Dr. Johnson did a thorough check, though, and was overall very happy. Fast forward a year later. I made an appointment about a month out for another mole check. Everyone was equally as friendly. My appointment was at lunch time and I had to wait almost an hour to be seen, with no explanation. After about 45 minutes I finally asked for a status update and was told it would be about 10 more minutes. Thankfully the women who work up front are super nice. Anyway, once I was in the office, the doctor came in fairly quickly. He then proceeded to ask me the same questions he had asked the year before. Like he had no record of it. Then he looked at some moles and I finally mentioned that he had taken notes and measurements last year and didn't he have those to compare to. He said he did and would use them if he needed to. The whole appointment felt very rushed and I was pretty unhappy. Had this been my first appointment, it would have been my last. Overall I would recommend Dr. Johnson, but make sure he's thorough and make your appointments about a month ahead of time! read more

While I use Yelp all the time before going to bars and restaurants, I wasn't sure if I should use it to find a doctor. However, I had a list of dermatologists from my insurance company and wasnt sure how to pick. As a result, I saw his good reviews and made an appointment a couple weeks ago. I had a couple minor problems I needed to see him for. All the staff were friendly and I was in and out within 20 minutes. I would definitely recommend him for basic needs at least. read more

Like many said, the appointment had to be scheduled about 3-4 weeks out, but it was worth waiting. He was professional, easy to talk to, and addressed all of my concerns. I received a full check-up on all of my moles, and prescribed me medication for dry skin. It was a quick in-and-out visit, but in a manner that didn't seem rushed-- more that the office was just super efficient. I will definitely be returning to Dr. Johnson for my dermatologist needs, and will be looking into the other doctors in the office for internal medicine since the staff was great, as well. read more

Recently went for a check in on a Thursday afternoon. I had to schedule my appointment 3 weeks in advance, but the actual wait time in the office was very short. Like what everyone says, he's a very friendly guy and easy to talk to. He doesn't waste your time. He prescribes what you need and works with you to find the best option without any fuss or extraneous meetings (unlike my previous derma who had me come in once a month just to sign a prescription without even a full check up - I paid my co-pay from my insurance for a 2 minute greeting and signature) The bad reviews here seem to be very rare cases, so I wouldn't hesitate to set up a meeting with Dr. Johnson. For a friendly doctor who's not here to waste your time, Dr. Johnson's your guy. read more

I don't know about you, but when I find a doctor or dentist that I love, I stick with it. Dr Johnson is now forever in my stable. I had a mole removed (benign, thanks) and it was the quickest, most pain-free experience of recent medical memory. His staff is nice and friendly, but as a testament to his skills he books out weeks and weeks in advance so get on it and get that weird spot removed asap. read more

Dr. Johnson is totally cool. I originally met him when dealing with some issues my daughter was having, but he was kind enough to lend his advise to me during her visits. Since then I have seen him regularly for my needs and he is always very patient and kind. I ask way too many questions and always bring in my internet research results as if he needs me to assist with the diagnosis...which i am sure he doesn't find annoying at all!! Overall, I'd say it was a meh experience. Dr. Johnson's assessment and approach isn't very thorough. I scheduled an appointment with him because I was breaking out and he didn't ask anything about my diet, skin care regiment, etc. It felt like he just looked at me for about a minute, made a bunch of assumptions and came to a conclusion. He doesn't listen very well. He prescribed a variety of (expensive) prescriptions. One prescription that he gave me caused mild esophagitis. When I went in for my follow up appointment with him (for which he was late!), he seemed to brush off the esophagitis- no big deal. During the appointment, he proceeded to tell me how surprised he was that the medicine he prescribed originally had some positive impact on my skin - it seems, he wasn't expecting to see any changes at all. This frustrated me as the prescriptions were hundreds of dollars. This guy's expensive and I don't think worth the cost. read more

Other than that he seemed uninterested in going the extra mile to work on my skin problems and considering it was my first visit he didn't even perform the usual full checkup most other dermatologists do. Didn't even ask me to take my shirt off to uncover the area and take a closer look. Some of the skin problems could be treated right there and then and instead he opted for a wait and see if it gets worse approach. Seriously?!?!? He has been extremely proactive and is very thorough in explaining his approach/treatment. Dr. Johnson is the third Dermatologist I've seen in Chicago (The first I didn't return to because he treated me like a child, called me Kiddo, and was totally condescending, the other butchered my skin in a mole removal) Dr. Johnson was nothing but professional. I felt his examination was very thorough and informative. He checked all of my moles including checking my entire scalp by combing through my hair. Recently my son had blood taken out as procedure for a new medication he was going to be prescribed. I received a phone message a week later stating that my son needed to call Dr. Johnson's office to discuss the blood results....My son called on three separate occasions, I myself called as well. This was a month ago and still no response....But they sure did call me to schedule my son's next appointment. Like most reading this, I rely on Yelp for almost everything and love the accuracy of the reviews. However, Dr. Johnson was by far the worst doctor I have ever seen and I still cannot get over the awful experience I had at his office. I saw Dr. Johnson for the first time about 4 weeks ago for some concerns about different spots on my skin. Of course, with skin, you never know when something that appears to be minor can be something major, so I normally don't take many risks. Dr. Johnson saw me very quickly and was very nice. However, after 15 minutes of our appointment, and after I had spoken to him about 50% of the things I wanted to, I told him I had a couple more things to talk about. Dr. Johnson said "I'm sorry but I have to go" and walked out of the room. His assistant/nurse came in and gave me my papers to check out. I was so blown away with his abrupt departure midway through our appointment, I didn't know what to say. He didn't have a pager or cell phone or anything that would have told him if there was an emergency, nor did he make any effort after the matter to explain why he left without telling me why. When I got up to check out, the lady at the check out desk had no information on the prescriptions Dr. Johnson talked about giving me, so for the next 20 minutes, I awkwardly stood in the waiting area while they ran back and forth trying to figure out what my prescriptions were. They then tried to give me a prescription for a different medicine prescribed to a different patient. I never got any explanation of why Dr. Johnson had to leave so fast, but it seemed like he didn't really care about any concerns I had. I called NW Memorial Physicians Group Patient Satisfaction Line. The lady I spoke to was very nice and apologetic, although I have now spoken to her three times and every time I call her, she says she is going to call me back once she speaks to Dr. Johnson's office, but Dr. Johnson's office never returns her emails when she reaches out to them about this. Don't waste your time and money on Dr. Johnson. He was the most unprofessional and awful doctor I have ever had. read more

Dr. Johnson is one of the best dermatologist's I've ever seen. He's thoughtful, informative and cares about his patients. However, since moving to a new practice, it's impossible to make an appointment (they never answer the phone) or get a message to him for a simple prescription renewal. The practice also requires payment up front (even if you have insurance) and they reimburse you once the insurance pays their invoice. This is really inconvenient, to pay $150 for a $35 co pay and then wait several months until the clinic reimburses you. Unfortunately, I will find another dermatologist which doesn't have the complicated practice and office staff can return calls. read more

I am new to Chicago and have been searching for the perfect dermatologist to help me with my psoriasis which I have been battling for years now. I was hesitant on choosing the right doctor who would not give me the run around and would make me feel comfortable. I heard rave reviews on Dr. Johnson and lucky for me, he was within my network. However, when I called to schedule an appointment, I was greeted to a very uninviting answer that said "Sorry, Dr. Johnson is NOT accepting new patients at this time." I never have heard that before from a doctor. I've always been under the impression that doctors become so because they WANT to help sick patients. There are lists of dermatologists in Chicago, I'm positive every person with some sort of skin concern is not under Dr. Johnson's care. Upset and confused, I asked why? The receptionist then proceeded to take down my information and said he would put my info in for a second opinion. This morning I woke up to a voicemail saying "Yeah, no..." I'm glad to hear Dr. Johnson is a great doctor, however some of us suffering from serious skin concerns will never know. I guess Dr. Johnson is fine with where his money is right now instead of focusing on those who really need help. read more

Dr. Johnson was great! He listened thoroughly to my issue, made a swift diagnosis and recommended a treatment plan. Also, I was very happy that I didn't have to wait three months to see him, which seems to be the case with most well-regarded dermatologist. However, I have a feeling he won't be that accessible for too much longer once the word gets out that he's really good. I liked that he was younger because he's probably more in touch with the latest research, and he was indeed very friendly and not socially awkward like a lot of doctors. I wasn't even embarrassed to show him the location of my complaint even though it required the removal of some clothing. He also didn't even mind when I started asking him some "while I'm here..." questions about other skin issues that are totally unrelated to why I made the appointment. Lastly, his assistant was very nice and laughed at my jokes, and they don't make you fill out reams of paperwork. I found Dr. Johnson on Yelp when I needed a new dermatologist in the city. I wasn't looking forward to leaving my old doctor, but his office is in the suburbs and no longer open on the weekends. Dr. Johnson and the entire staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgable, and I never had to wait to get into my appointments. As a new patient, I only waited two weeks to get in and never had trouble after that. I also appreciate that he has early morning appointments to get in and out before work.
