I visited here 4 different occasions over a 4 day time frame. The food overall was fine. I sat at the bar. I had salmon over a bed of rice with a side salad the first night and it was good. There was a concert happening close by so the staff was overwhelmed and it took a while to be served. Jessie was the bartender and she was training someone else at the time but the drinks she made were good and she tried to check in and best she could. I came again with colleagues who got wings and enjoyed them but it was later in the evening. Our server was cool, but it did take awhile in between getting drinks and the food and there were not very many people there but she did mention they were short staffed. Another group of colleagues and I went for lunch and it was right before the lunch crowd arrived. Our waitress Tamara was great but as the lunch crowd hit you could tell it was a lot to manage. One colleague got the burger and fries, they said it was okay. Chicken tenders were also ordered and they were decent. I had the Caesar salad with shrimp and it was good. The last time I we t we just grabbed drinks from the bar and some chips. Overall I would rate a 3 because with everything going on that weekend there should have been more staff, I felt bad for the people there having to stretch themselves thin. We stayed at the Westin in Uptown and wanted to grab some food quickly before getting our day started. We walked in on Friday afternoon and the crowd was pretty light. Scott was our server and he was very attentive. First, Scott brought Popcorn to our table and it was tasty . That was very different than bread and was a great touch. Being black , I have to be honest for an Irish place I wasn't expecting great food. I ordered the appetizer wedge salad with no cheese and it was tasty. The portion size was also very big! I also ordered the wings and asked that they be fried hard. The wings were delicious and the seasoning was banging! It also was a very filling size for an appetizer portion. Best dining experience ever! In town a day early for a conference. We were staying at the Sheraton and the staff sent us to Todd English for dinner. We ordered the junk pub chips, which had pulled pork and other toppings that made this a great dish. The chips are house made and come out crispy and hot. This really could be an entree it had so much on it. There were 6 of us in our party and we shared this and it was still a lot. I ordered watermelon salad and the Memphis Style Ribs. The watermelon wasn't sweet but the goat cheese and onions helped make up for this shortcoming. The ribs came with P.U.B. chips and pickled veggies (okra and pickles). I didn't care for the pickled veggies but still loved the pub chips. The ribs were fall off the bone tender! The rub was slightly spicy but good! I've been to Todd English PUB about four times now, and have consistently been underwhelmed. I wish it were better because of Todd English's reputation as chef and foodie. And, the location is ideal for a night out in the ham. Last night was a big night for the Uptown district because there were two events at the BJCC (Janet Jackson and Broadway series, I'll let you guess which one we attended). Todd E wasn't our first choice, but other uptown restaurants quoted 1 to 1 1/2 hour waits. Our party of four was seated after only a 10 minute wait so this visit was off to a good start. Our waitress was friendly and took our order in a timely manner. But after that our experience fell short in the following ways: 1) Dinner order took forever to come out. The restaurant was busy, but the kitchen couldn't keep up. 2) I ordered the Pub Burger cooked medium. I thought the patty had a good flavor, but it was over cooked. This restaurant was just average and mediocre. I was recently here for happy hour and our waitress was, Madi. She appeared to be there physically, but not physically. She was distant and we had to try multiple times to get her attention to order our food, ask for sauces and to cash out. Our table ordered the naked wings, lemon peppered wings, roasted Brussels sprouts, beef sliders and Malibu punch. The Malibu punch was delicious. The naked wings were cooked with a spicy dry rub, which made them spicy. Also, the temperature of the sliders was room temperature as if they were sitting out for some time. The restaurant was pretty empty and had lots of empty seats available. As for the bathroom it was clean; however, the paper towel dispenser did not have any paper towels in them. Not quite a pub, Todd English P.U.B. is more of a sports bar with a pub theme. Comfort foods and higher end stuff on the menu. Lots of TV's around that are tuned in to the sports game of the moment. And speaking of menus, they have a large one with all sorts of beers listed. I really wanted a local beer but they were out. I ended up with something from Charleston SC that was good but... I had the grilled cheese sandwich that had some strange name. Inside, three kinds of cheese, bacon and tomato. Probably not very healthy but it was tasty. With $1 wings (2) and $3 well cocktails during Happy Hour this is the perfect conference pit stop. The service was not fast. But, the drinks are cheap and the wings were meaty. It took my colleague over 30 minutes to get his wings. I had them order mine before I got there (I learned food service was pretty slow the night before). this was possibly one of the worst meals I've ever had, and the service was even worse. when we were seated, the manager says "a server will be right with you", 18 minutes went by and we had not even been greeted by our server. We flagged down the manager, who did not get our server, but took our drink, salad and entree order all at the same time. five more minutes went by and then our server appeared! she also took our order. never apologized for our wait, for her absence, nothing. acted like she was superb. our salads took 15 more minutes to come..our drinks did come in the interim of our wait for the salads. my husband ordered a Ceasar salad and I ordered a strawberry arugula salad. they were fine, but nothing spectacular. For the entrees, my husband ordered steak, medium-rare and fries. I ordered steak, medium-well and substituted macaroni and cheese. when the food arrived, his steak was so over cooked, it was hard and the fries were ice cold but barely cooked. My steak was unevenly cooked, and at about a medium temperature. It took quite awhile (at least 10 minutes) for the server to return. I conceded to eat the steak he had been brought bc then at least it was just one steak to have to be fixed. When the server finally came to our table, we explained it to her. she took the plate. about 15 minutes went by. While we were waiting, my husband went to ask who the manager was, as we did not know at this point. the hostess pointed out the managers, who we now realized had been the one who took our order, as we had not been informed of that from the outset. fine, no big deal. as my husband was finding out about managers, the manager brought the steak to the table, dropped it on the table and took off without staying to see if it was cooked probably, or even to my husband's liking. The steak was RAW. not rare. RAW. It had been barely seared on the outside and was still blue (and cold) on the inside. the worst part about all of this poor cookery is that they serve the steaks SLICED! which means they KNEW it was poorly cooked the first time AND that it was raw this time. They sliced it, slid it onto a new plate and slopped some chimichurri on top. Honestly, the chimichurri was the best part of the whole meal. It actually tasted good. Let me get back to the macaroni and cheese. it was nasty. the pasta was overcooked, and the sauce was not only broken/grainy but it had been scorched/burnt. i tried eating it, but it was inedible. So while his steak sat there, still raw, no one and I mean no one came to the table. Another 10 minutes went by. I asked thr hostess if she'd send a manager to our table. she also seemed irritated at the servers, etc. A different manager came to the table and asked what was wrong, and when we showed him the steak, he asked "what can I do to fix this?", which at first was a valiant effort. but at this point, was too-little-too-late. my husband said, honestly nothing. this is the first date night we've had in quite awhile bc of our busy schedules and there were a number of options in the vicinity but we chose here. so the manager says, well,, you won't have to pay for this. my husband said no, we just want to pay for what we ate and our drinks. so the manager leaves the table. we think to get our check. naynay another 10 minutes goes by. I am fuming by this point. we just want to pay and leave. our server comes to the table and actually asks if we like the food! she had no clue what had happened. the manager had not even told her! We just say no. and tell her what we'd like to pay for. she leaves. several more minutes go by. ANOTHER manager comes over and asks if my husband would like a box to take his RAW steak home. at this point I've had enough and I say, you're the 3rd person we've had to explain this terrible food and service to. we just want the check, for the love. it took another 20 minutes to finally get our check and get out of there. In addition to all of this, the table beside us was having similar "bad service" issues. to the point that they were walking out the door when their food finally arrived, and with no apologies or explanations. I might excuse many things, had the restaurant been packed full and extremely busy, but it was not. there were empty tables all over the restaurant. Now, I have said all of this because I am a chef. I worked in fine dining for many years. I was a line cook, sous chef, a kitchen manager, running the pass/expediting food. I am a big Todd English fan, and I wanted to experience his pub-style restaurant. But as a chef, I can say, with absolute confidence - people come for the food; they come BACK for the service. The appetizers: the jumbo shrimp and oysters Rockefeller were spot on. The shrimp were fresh, easy to peel and the cocktail sauce had a great horseradish kick; the oyster Rockefeller again hit the mark with a balance of crunchy Panko breading, spinach, Parmesan cream sauce etc The Bad: the bartender must have been new; our drinks were lacking balance and were not the the most challenging of drinks to be made. This was our first taste of the restaurant. Maybe beer is more in order next time? The Ugly: the salmon( fish of the day )was 30 dollars and was not served with a side. I don't get that. Worse than that, the salmon was undercooked ( raw in the middle ) and completely oversauced. This restaurant also makes its own pastrami. I ordered a Reuben with the pastrami. Here's the problem: the pastrami was neither smoked or tasted of any of the typical brine or spice rub accompanying pastrami. I could look past the lack of smoke but the lack of pastrami spice made this sandwich basically a roasted brisket sandwich. Did the kitchen make a mistake and give me the wrong meat? The service is also solid and the prices are reasonable when you consider the location in the Uptown area. We were starving after a late night flight and this pub was pretty much the only place that was opened near the Sheraton/Westin. We were seated by the bar and given the late night menu. Since it was my first night in Birmingham, I decided to stay away from a traditional burger and went with the Seafood Dynamite. It came in a small cast iron plate with lots of oil/cheese, skimpy pieces of seafood and a few slices of bread. The flavor wasn't really there and it was very spicy for my taste. I had to eat some of my friend's fries to calm my hunger and be a little more satisfied. 2/5 Service was friendly and the pub itself is very pretty with floor to ceiling windows 4/5 My colleagues ordered salad and the burgers and they seemed to enjoy it so it was probably my dish. I've eaten at the P.U.B. in Vegas and this location is very similar. The menu has a good variety but is very expensive. Our waitress was below par. I ordered a Pinot Grigo and she didn't know what that was. Gave me a Chardonnay instead. I ordered the Roast Beef Sliders and she asked how I wanted it cooked - it is a roast beef sandwich, I don't think I get to choose how they cook it. She have me point at what I was ordering - she didn't know the menu at all. The food was good. Hopefully the staff will improve over time. I view this as more of a hotel restaurant because of the prices. Birmingham isn't like Vegas - most people don't eat $25-30 lunches. I used to pine for a Ruben at Todd English PUB. I was last here about 18 months ago and the sandwich was amazing. Well, not anymore. We showed up at 8 on a Friday night. It's not busy at all. The security guard had to go find a hostess to seat us who then had to go find a server. I realize this is a casual joint but jeez people... Anyway... We're trying to cut back on sugar so we asked for water. Server seemed annoyed at this but said nothing. We had to ask for refills as none were OFFERED during our stay. The meal: just sad. Ruben was dried out and made with the wrong meat. There a crunchy heal of a pork roast instead of the tender, juicy, and flavorful pastrami I got in past visits. Came to this restaurant with high hopes. Built within a higher class Westin hotel in a new part of town, one would expect for the food to at least be subpar. You, however, would be mistaken. Don't bank on any of the menu items online as they dramatically reduced their menu size. This would be fair if you follow the quality over quantity dogma, but unfortunately this isn't the case. I ordered the fried fish and chips. This is a classic meal for an English pub. When it hit the table I was excited until I took a bite. Cooked cod is extremely flaky, so a light bite of beautiful cod was my expectation. I was surprised, unfortunately, when I met resistance. A lot of resistance. They had undercooked the cod by a notable amount. The cod was horribly underdone. This scared my girlfriend into refusing to eat the shrimp in her shrimp & grits. There are a few reasons why I decided upon a 2 star review. One of these is because, admittedly, the fries weren't too bad. The second reason is because our server was an angel. The last reason is because they just wiped the food off the tab. Perhaps this was just a fluke occasion? Hopefully so, but I personally will not be the one to find out. read more

Breakfast in a pub or a pub in a breakfast joint. Now you decide how to brand this place, but I was able to experience both in under 24 hours. Naturally, that's what happens after you have 10 too many and end up crashing at the Westin, then coming back for breakfast asking a never dull question, "weren't we here last night?" The bar (booze filled night review): I don't know if it's the age causing my hangovers to last longer or the wild combinations of liquors, nonetheless I am still recovering from the drinks I had at this place. Even on weekend nights, it appears to be mostly empty. The whole uptown area is just way too small right now to make a dent of gentrification in this area, but if there is a special event, I suspect there are more people. Happy hour specials are awesome and they have a decent amount of beers on tap. The waiter was a bit odd and just disappeared for about 30 minutes after giving me a sample of beer that i was ready to order. That was an odd expedience. He seemed like a nice fella otherwise, perhaps he found himself serving a ghost on the other end of the bar while we were waiting. All else was fine, but don't expect a party here unless you bring the party yourself. The dreadful morning: To be quite honest, the morning was hell. However, their breakfast made it just a tad bit better and that tiny bit is exactly what I needed in order to make the drive home. Their fried chicken dish was spectacular. Egg, bacon, chips and fried chicken, sandwiched between bread was absolutely the thing to get if you are feeling like a mountain of vodka and beer crashed on your shoulders that morning. Service in the morning was much better and the waitress was attentive. Tip: they do validate parking in the Bjcc parking deck down the street and to the right. Everyone from the front of the house, the chef, servers (Kyler and Shelly were awesome!!) and busboys had a "pleasure to provide stellar service" attitude. I can appreciate that! I've only dined at TE once for a yelp event and that opportunity felt as if the red carpet had been rolled out. For starters...the featured cocktail was tasty: Cotesworth No8- yummy in my tummy. For the food, I was so pleased at the amount/variety of food: (note: see picture for details) House Smoked Chicken Wings: TE host & BBQ- both flavors were so awesome and the bleu cheese was a perfect touch (never seen or tasted fancy shreds of bleu cheese). Mini TE tacos: Perfection with each bite. These little things can fill you up quickly- it's amazing how they get all those ingredients on such a tiny two-bite app Fish on a Stick: TE's take on fish and chips, but all in one! This was hands down my favorite! I can't even put into words how good this was, yet so simple. The flavor was totally there. I could honestly order this with a side and be satisfied. Ahi Tuna "Tar Tare": This dish was cool if tar tare is your thing. I loved the crispy wonton and am so glad I tried it. Overall I would say this was probably my least favorite app offered because I prefer my fish cooked. Nonetheless, tasty if once again tar tare is your thing Deviled Eggs: I loved the idea of okra topped eggs, the sexy scallions added a nice touch! There you have it. If the full menu is anything like the appetizers above, you are in for a treat. I believe items are reasonably priced. In full, the menu is extensive, offering a great variety to serve all taste buds. The desserts seem amazing for those of age and willing to take the plunge. I went back the following morning for breakfast and had some great biscuits and gravy but the orange juice was way overpriced for the size that you get. As othets have said the food can be extremely slow in coming to the table but the waitstaff was attentive, so it is most likely a kitchen issue. I stopped in on a wet and rainy January day. The PUB was not busy and I was escorted to a table not far from the bar. I was offered popcorn and my drink order was taken - I ordered coffee to chase away the damp and chill, and it was GOOD coffee. I placed my order for their French Dip sandwich, the small size which came with either soup, salad or fries. Since I was feeling the chill, I opted for their soup of the day, Vegie Beef.. When it came to the table the sandwich was the smallest item on the plate, with the Au Jus bowl being the largest and the central item - I found the plating odd. The soup was on the spicy side, apparently having either jalapeño peppers or some other pepper as one of the vegies, but it was tasty and there was a load of beef in it. The sandwich was very good, though I left much of the bread behind. I don't think I even touched the Au Jus once. While there, I didn't lack for refills and the service was good, even if the waitresses tended to cluster over by the window at the entry station and chatted a lot. I asked where I'd find a CVS or other drug store in the area, and was told there wasn't one close by and if I wasn't familiar with the area, I probably shouldn't venture far as I wasn't in a good or safe area for .. my kind. I found it odd, but I took the waitress at her word. *shrug* I figure she knows the area. Thankfully I was valet parked at my hotel and have a GPS so I was able to find my area. I stopped in on a recent visit to the area, I was staying in a hotel that was walking distance to Todd English so I stopped in with a large group to grab dinner. I was impressed at how they handled our group but that's really where it stopped. 60% of the beers we ordered were "out" and I'm slightly disappointed in that as it is a pub and I was looking forward to having a beer after a long day of travel. I ordered a salad for dinner and was disappointed at the size of the salad for the price. It was entree prices but side salad servings. Overall I'd only go back if it was on the company dime but I don't see myself spending my own money here. read more

Upon checking in at Todd English's Pub, the first things I noticed was the beautiful bar tender, a 10% off coupon and a no so good rating?? I normally steer way clear if the Yelpers rating isn't 3.5 and up. This place is showing 2.5 when I checked in. After a reunion the night prior with a pack ole buddies I had to wait till noon for the much my needed Bloody Mary medicine. The bloodies was above average but average isn't very good these days. Nobody beats my own bloodies. After the hottie bar tender delivered the third bloody my pounding head starting to finely ease up. She the suggested the "Southern Pork Benedict". That quite frankly didn't really sound that good. I was wrong. Very tasty. The combination of the perfectly Poached Eggs on a very Tender Pork Tenderloin with spinach & buttermilk Bisquit was worked really well with a extra spicy Bloody Mary. read more
