I'm probably too familiar with JFK's Terminal 7 since I use United a lot when I go to New York, and while there looks to be a lot of eating options in the food court, they are mostly substandard fast food. The one sit-down place that's almost worthwhile is this place. Todd English is a chef mostly known for his tabloid headlines - drunk driving in the Hamptons (...watch out, Ina!), broken engagement with a woman who hit him with his own wristwatch, getting photographed with topless girls in a hot tub, shuttered restaurants with unpaid debts - and he has that self-satisfied, smirky manner that makes me switch the channel when he's on TV. Regardless, he has one of his many restaurants in the food court here, and it's called rather appropriately Bonfire. It stands out only because you get waited on here, but otherwise, it didn't make much of an impression on me. The menu is new jack American which appears to be his specialty, so i ordered the $14.95 Caesar Salad, which was one of the oddest presentations I've ever seen of this standard-issue dish. It was a whole Romaine heart uncut and doused completely in dressing with shards of Parmesan, three small triangle-shaped crostini and three little piles of capers (photo: http://bit.ly/15YD9vQ). It was a mess waiting to happen because it was thoroughly challenging to cut into without having it splatter everywhere. It tasted decently enough once I got it under control, but seriously, why was the overly artful presentation such a priority for travelers with planes to catch? Recently had a two-hour layover at JFK and wanted a place to sit and have a cocktail. (It was my 15th wedding anniversary, we were starting our vacation, and I wanted to splurge.) Good thing we'd already situated ourselves at the bar before I looked up the Yelp reviews. Yes, it's pricey - just about any airport restaurant with table service will be, especially in NY, NY. But surprise, surprise, the food was really good! I ordered a margarita rocks, and my husband had a Stella draft. We split the "Medusa" guacamole and chips (see my photo) along with the burger and fries. The guac was freshly made and very tasty, with big chunks of avocado and more than a hint of spice. The burger was well cooked, nice and cheesy and topped with caramelized onions. We found that adding the guacamole to the burger further improved the taste sensation. I stopped in for a beer, but neglected to easily figure out that I couldn't bring outside food into the restaurant. My bad. The beer was just what I needed. What I didn't need was the disengaged service. The Olympics were on the TV and the Bar Keep was not to be diverted from watching the swimming competition. So I patiently waited until the event was over to ask for service. And after a deliberate "how dare you" scowl, I got my beer. The Skinny: mediocre overpriced food (1) service: do not eat here unless you want to miss your flight! (0), value: $44 pretax for a plate of fish tacos, chicken tacos, chips and salsa plus shitty service... this place gets a 0. I admit. I should have read the reviews for this place on Yelp. If we had, we would have never ventured into this venus flytrap otherwise known as Bonfire Grill. Yes, we were allured by the Todd English name. He should be frankly embarassed to put his name on this horrible establishment. First, let's start off with the state of non-service in this supposedly fully service restaurant. Our waiter came by and took our orders (which we had to repeat twice to make sure he got it right). We never saw him again until 30 minutes later when he finally got around to bring glasses of water. Perhaps he dawdled to entice us to sample the unopened bottles of water on the table so he could bump up the tab. I don't know. After that, it took nearly an hour from the time we sat down to receive any food - and this is at an airport restaurant! I also noted many others had to leave food behind or had to pack it up to go because of how slow this place is. Finally when we were able to flag him to down for the cheque, he took care of another person's cheque first....even though we asked for ours first. It literally took us 1.5 hours to get out of this gong show. As if the service wasn't bad enough, the food was just as horrific. Although placed prettily on a plate, this place has some mighty balls to proclaim that they have a "taqueria" as there is nothing here with the flavourings of onion, cilantro or lime. The chips and salsa ($8) seems like an easy enough dish. The chips were served cold and sugar was clearly added to salsa to give it a ketchup like taste. The fish tacos ($17) were amazingly bland with a clump of sauerkraut like substance thrown on top instead of a slaw as promised. The chicken in the chicken tacos ($15) were smothered with the subpar pico de gallo described above while the protein was tough. As they say, "No es bueno!" Overall, this experience was absolutely terrible. I think the Wendy's next door offers better eats. At least they wouldn't make you wait 1 hour for your food. read more

GO TO THE WENDY'S NEXT DOOR! So I had a few hours before my flight home, I spent most of it shopping, and then finally when I was hungry I looked up the restaurants and was SO excited to see Todd English's Bonfire. I'm a big fan of his work and my flight was going to be long so I was looking forward to be nice and stuffed. Unfortunately my experience wasn't anything like I had imagined. I am not unused to a pricey menu so at first I shrugged it off believing that I would get quality food for the hefty price. I was seated immediately and my order was taken quickly, my waitress seemed rather nice. However that was where the fun ended. The place was rather empty and was definitely over staffed, it was a bit annoying to find a handful of waiters chatting in front of me with nothing to do, the whole time waiting for my water to be refilled by ANYONE. My food came out and it was ok, my burger was a odd mushy brown that I didn't know burgers could be. However I was filled and somewhat content at this point. Then came the hour of my life that I will never get back. I sat there, plate completely empty in front of me, drink nothing but melted ice, and a desire to get out of there to prepare for my flight. The same group of waiters was still in front of me chatting away, my waitress herself seemed to be taking care of the few tables all alone. I sat and sat and sat, I even read a book for about half an hour. I would have liked something to drink, or for the dirty plate in front of me to be taken away, and I would have especially liked my check so I could leave. However none of this happened. I'm with Jeremy M---this place is almost 4 stars for being at JFK airport. Sure it's waaaaaay overpriced for what you get, but so are the $4 candy bars they sell at the airport news stand. The food is actually not that bad. I had a flank steak that was served on a bed (a large bed---see pics) of tortilla chips. It was arguably the best presented airport food I've ever had, although I must admit if you get your steak on the rarer side the tortilla chips get a bit soggy with blood---yes less than idea to eat bloody tortilla chips. This is about as bad a restaurant as can be found, even when controlling for the fact that it's in an airport. I'm alone but wanted a booth in the mosty empty restaurant. Have you ever wondered what shitty, overpriced airport food tasted like? Here's your chance. Salad doused with so much dressing, I had to literally shake it and scrape it off the leaves with a knife. Chicken tasted off, like it was cooked yesterday and reheated today. And service absolutely abysmal. After taking my order, my waiter disappeared behind the bar and never went to check on my food again. This place, even by airport standards, is absolute crap. For slightly less money, you can get equally mediocre fast food right nearby. Save yourself a couple of bucks and your dignity. read more

I need to preface this review with a disclaimer. I always base my reviews on what expectations the restaurant (or store or whatever) is trying to live up to. The same greasy carnitas tacos, for example, can get either five stars or two stars depending on whether I ate said tacos at a street stand or some ultra-chic wannabe. With that being said, Todd English's Bonfire at the United terminal in JFK is pretty good and deserving of at least three stars. If it weren't for the exorbitant prices, I would have given this airport eatery four stars. These days, I'm traveling non-stop so room service and airport food are my go-to's for eats whether I like it or not. Most airports know that they have a captive audience and do little to impress customers with good eats. Through it's contemporary décor, Bonfire does a pretty darn good job of hiding the fact that you're dining amongst cranky travelers and pretends to be a real restaurant. Service is spotty but above average. (Again, keep in mind my captive audience statement. Airport restaurants never have good service. Ever.) The mixed greens and arugula salad with shallots was fresh and the perfect amount of balsamic vinaigrette dressing. My glass of tempranillo was a generous pour and not bad for the price. The barbecued shrimp with queso fresco and cornbread was pretty good considering. While the barbecue sauce was a bit too sweet and the cornbread a bit dry, the shrimp were satisfying. But for $23, you should get a more impressive main than five measly shrimp and a couple pieces of dry cornbread. If you ever travel to New York, chances are you fly in and out of the JFK airport. And with the airline industry the way it is, I can pretty much guarantee that you will be stuck at the airport tired, irritable and hungry. Bonfire is probably your best bet for a decent meal and a drink or two. read more

The French onion soup was tasty, had lots of cheese as not as much bread which is the way I like it. Was here on July 7th 2012. Food was ok going from Cleveland to Shannon Ireland . Paid with credit card. Big mistake. They have Some one inside who copied magnetic strip on the card . By the time I got to Ireland card was used 3 times at 25th street CVS for $800,$400 and $200. I don't live in N Y and was the only place I used the card. This is one of those times I'm glad I didn't check Yelp before I ate somewhere. My experience was a bit different than most reviewers. I came in this afternoon, waited 5 minutes to be seated b/c it was packed. When I was seated I placed my order skirt steak tacos since I had been checking out the menu while waiting. 8 minutes later I had my entree. It was excellent by airport food standards. Like most airport food, it was overpriced/expensive, but compared to other airport grub I've had, this was a cut above. Thomas, my server got me in and out of there in 24 minutes. Here's the deal: (1) It's in an airport. (2) It's a syndicated version of a celebrity chef's restaurant creation. (3) It is seriously overpriced for the quality of food that is delivered to you. (4) The service is mediocre at best. Look, you are trapped in the worst (possibly) airport in the United States with a layout designed by a 3-year. You have limited dining options that are not "fast food", and you are essentially trapped while on layover because you cannot get into the City and back to the airport before your connecting flight. Half the menu was not available. I ordered guacamole and chips because that was the only choice left to me as a vegetarian, and I thought it should be pretty hard to mess up. I was wrong. I sat there waiting for quite awhile before I received water or even had my order taken. * Meals shouldn't upset the stomach -- you'll be stuck on an airplane with crappy bathroom facilities. i was at the airport way too early for my flight. after binge eating approximately one million food items over the past 3 days on my NYC FOODSTRAVAGANZA, i hadn't eaten a single thing that day until i reached the airport at 4pm. i was told NEVER to get mexican in NY since i come from SF where there is an endless supply of great mexican food. Mexico is too far from NY for there to be great authentic mexican in NY, you see. take that however you want to. you know what i mean. but Todd English is a pretty well known chef, so i wrongfully assumed that his restaurant might provide some great nachos. they were pretty "meh." the guacamole looked like green liquid. WTF? it could have been ninja turtle slime for all i knew. I didn't even get to eat here, the waiter kept ignoring me for 20 minutes while I was sitting and waiting at a table. 20 minutes later I finally gave up on those ignoring waitress, and walked off to the front hostess to complain. She didn't say a word, and point to a sign reads "please seat yourself for your service". and continue texting and giggling with her coworkers. Hellow? well if waitress keep ignoring you or refuse to come to table, how am I going to order anything!? I asked for manager and she laughed off and continue texting and chatting with her coworkers like she doesn't need customers. I won't recommend this place for my worst enermy. After wandering around the area of JFK that was close to our gate we finally settled on this place. Our spirits were high, as we were bound for Ireland within the hour! Those spirits QUICKLY diminished after appearing to be INVISIBLE to the lovely staff of Todd's English Bonfire. I would say 2 hostesses and 3 waiters looked our direction but apparently they weren't in the mood to seat anyone. After walking in to the restaurant and asking to be seated we finally were able to put down all our luggage. It would be our luck that we would be assigned the new waiter who knew nothing about the menu. After receiving a few blank stares as answers about prices, I decided to take a risk and order a glass of wine resulting in a small crappy glass of wine costing $11! The food here was so-so but really the service was what made me hate this place. You would think in an airport they would realize people could be in a hurry but evidently not. I would skip trying to have a nice meal before your flight and just stick with some fast food chain you like in the area! read more

My Delta flight was delayed a couple hours (surprise--a recurring theme in these reviews), but I was happy to find Bonfire, with the name Todd English attached. The decor was pleasant and certainly seemed a better place to while the hours away than the Wendy's or the sports bar next door. I asked the hostess for a table. She replied, "We're not serving brunch." O...kay, not that I remembered asking. "Are you serving lunch?" "No." Seeing groups of diners eating, I asked, "Are you serving ANYTHING?" The hostess answered, "We serve lunch, but not until 11am." I checked my watch. It was 10:57. "Can you seat me, and I'll just wait out the three minutes?" I asked, trying to suppress a giggle. "Let me ask my manager." she said, trotting away. ANYWAY, cut to half an hour later as I was served a not-so-bad portabello mushroom quesadilla. For Hoegaarden on tap at a terminal for regional jets, this place was acceptable. (Did not serve the Hoegaarden in hexagonal glass which cost them a star.) Decent decor, uncrowded and Vasili, the waiter, was funny and attentive. Observing patrons around me I have to say service is slow. Another person ordered nachos and waited 45 minutes for her food. i've been twice now. the first time was a month ago. i strolled in at 1145am and there were 2 customers. my service was very nice and quick. the mahi tacos came in a flash and i was done in 25 minutes. today i went back around 130pm and it was crowded so i sat down in a booth that hadnt been cleared yet. the server took a while to get to me and when she did she said "you sat at a dirty table so we didn't know you were here". faux paux my way for sitting at a dirty table but shouldnt she know that her customer left when she didn't recognize me? anyway, i ordered the fish tacos again and it arrived quickly (less than 15 minutes). i also ordered the tri tip appetizer to go for the plane. they were both yummy (tri tip a bit on the salty side). the mahi portion was totally enough to fill me up. i'd say it was also very good food for the airport. the quality, presentation, ingredients, style, all exceptional compared to the usual jetway fare. bonfire is a little on the pricy side but i was full for $22. despite the spotty service i'd come back. read more

I had been dreaming of a hamburger for three weeks traveling abroad. I saw "Todd English" and "steakhouse" and my heart leaped. So, I tried to order the burger rare, and my waitress told me my only two "options" were medium well or well done. I think that's all I need to say in this review about the food. That pretty much killed it right there. But then the food came.... another 10 mins went by, and it was cold! Horrible! One of the worst meals I've ever had at any restaurant -- inside an airport or not! Overpriced.BAD service -- and the place was empty! I should have known an empty restaurant and just mean employees wandering around is not good. The monitor outside the restaurant/on the window -- showed nice pictures but no prices. The food items did NOT look like te pics. Go anyplace else -- even McDonalds would have been better. Todd English should be ashamed -- food and service sub par. The 'waitress' didn't bother to even look at us -- say please, thank you, offer drinks, water, etc. RUDE. Looking at these reviews -- lots of other people had the same experience. Delta flight delayed me 2 hrs. Got a blue moon, crab nachos, and just greens salad. Nachos and salad were both very good size and tasty. But, there was literally 1 tablespoon of crab, and the upcharge for crab demanded far more. I spoke to the manager, who apologized and spoke to the chef. He then offered me a different app of my choice. The steak tacos are smaller than the nachos, but very good. The waitress then told me my entire bill was comped, and she apologized, too. The food was two-three stars (pricy, but tasty), and the manager response was five full stars. Averages out to about three, and I would definitely return - but only when paying with a corporate card. read more

Ok, I realize I'm eating at an airport restaurant, but geez, this food was awful even for an airport. I ordered a hamburger cooked to medium (they don't do medium rare). It took over 30 minutes to get it and it was cooked to medium well++. I can understand food coming out late if they are getting killed with orders but the restaurant was quite empty the night I was there. It seemed to me that the cooks were more interested in chatting up the wait staff than they were cooking a proper hamburger. Mark that down as a disadvantage of a restaurant having an open kitchen. The awful food with an over priced bill for an hamburger that's had the life cooked out of it and an average beer will have you jumping on first flight to anywhere to escape the 37 buck joke that Todd English has played on you. I'm almost tempted to give this a location adjusted 4 stars. I mean, seriously...It's in the AIRPORT. To those who gripe about the prices...a freakin Whopper combo at the Burger King in this airport is 10 bucks... Which made me feel less duped by my $17 burger and parmesan fries combo here...it was at least 70% better than a whopper! Everything I saw come out of the kitchen looked above average. After a 5 hour plane ride from Portland, my aunt and I had a 1 1/2 hour layover at JFK before our plane even started boarding. After a breakfast of airplane peanuts and Biscoff cookies, we were ready for a MEAL. Bonfire was right beside our gate and the menu looked like exactly what we were looking for. We were the only people in the small "restaurant" space and sat at a table. There was one girl working behind the bar who completely ignored us for the first few minutes. Then, when two men came and sat at the bar she handed me some menus from across the bar. So now there are two groups (us and men at the bar), and I'm still not sure as to whether I have to go up to the bar to order anything or if she is going to come to us. When she does come over to us we order the chips & guac with salsa to start with. My aunt gets the mahi mahi tacos and I get a chicken sandwich. There are more people slowly filling up the restaurant now - it is getting more towards dinner time and flights are coming in. By time we ordered we still had a little less than hour before boarding. Our chips & guac took almost 20 minutes to reach our table. We were never offered a refill on our drinks. The bartender/waitress did apologize once I caught her eye and I felt bad because she was completely overwhelmed once there was a crowd. It took 45 MINUTES for us to get our meals. We did NOT order steaks - just chicken and tacos - geez! We practically had to inhale our food before going to our gate. Like I said, we were the first group to place our order and it took that long. I got a little scared after reading the reviews.. I had already ordered my steak wich I would normally never order at an airport restaurant;( it was not worth the price but better than anticipated.. I ate it.. Service was airport standards.. I didn't expect any better.. But I have to say my meal was not as bad as some of the reviews I read here while waiting.
