Not very quiet as you can hear street noise, talking from the pedicure clients and others getting massages. So do not come here if you want a quiet massage. Very brief foot soak (2min) in the lounge chairs and the foot massage began. My male masseuse was ok and sometimes had enough pressure in the right spots but was fairly inconsistent. My masseuse got changed after my foot massage to a female unfortunately. I usually prefer male masseuses because I have an extremely tense back and constantly need more pressure (opted for the option w/more back massage time for this reason). I'm the type of person always getting deep tissue and sports massages. The replacement masseuse was ok but pressure wasn't constantly hard (even after asking for more pressure). I was watching the older gentleman work on the other person I came with and he definitely knew what he was doing. I got here early and granted I was the only customer, I could not relax and was completely on edge the entire time. There were approximately ten staff including the girl working on me that were chatting non stop, very loudly, the entire time. It was completely overstimulating and ruined the whole experience. Sadly, I can no longer recommend this place. In October, I came here for a regular pedi. The male technician nicked my small toe. I can forgive an accident. Yesterday, I had another pedi done. The female technician went to town with my cuticles and trimmed it until the skin on my big toes were raw. She kept asking me if it hurts and I said yes, but she said, it's ok. Only a little bit. WTH? They also don't enforce their "keep it quiet" policy. It has been noisy the last two times I've come in and that's not relaxing to me even if I've booked the first appointment in the morning, but the massage area just gets too busy and noisy. If you walk in heels, sandals or have dry feet, you must come here! If anyone ever told you no one will see your feet (hinting you shouldn't take care of it) they're lying to you! Your hands and feet must look decent no mater if it's winter time and especially summer time, should look it's best. I had the hardest time looking for a foot scrub place until I found utoepia. Their staff is super friendly and they get packed super quick, so it's best to make an appointment. Their decor is super colorful and I got the callus scrub and paraffin wax for my hands. The paraffin wax made my hands so soft and they basically wrapped your hands in a bag with the was for a good 10-15 min and once they take it off, it's a miracle. The callus scrub has three processes, wrapping your feet in a bag that heats up, scrubbing the dead skin off (this process is super ticklish), and moisturizer lotion to finish it off. Several months ago, my friend told me about uTOEpia which I suggested to two of my friends for a Girls' Day Out. On Sunday, 5.1.11, my girls and I arrived at uTOEpia a little early for our 4 PM appointments so we had to wait a bit until they were ready for us. Traditionally, Chinese Foot Massage (Reflexology) can be very intense but very beneficial to your health (i.e. improves circulation, release toxins, etc). It starts with a footbath while the masseuse massages your scalp, face, neck and arms. They then proceed to the foot reflexology massage portion which includes a calf and thigh massage. Finally, you're flipped onto your tummy where your shoulders, back, buttocks are massaged. You're fully clothed the entire time and it's often performed in an open room with other patrons. UTOEPIA'S FOOT MASSAGE (CHINESE FOOT REFLEXOLOGY): Your feet bathe in a warm herbal bath for about 10 minutes while the masseuse preps. Where's the local anesthesia ? The manicurist ( I believe her name was Hanmei? I couldn't read her writing) dug so deep into the side of every toe nail which caused pain and discomfort. I've never EVER had a manicurist do that to me ever! I don't even had ingrown toe nails, so what the heck? She actually even made me BLEED. She asked to cut the sides of my nails and I said only a little. Well, she didn't care to listen. In the picture I've include you can see the dark spot to the left of my second toe. That is from the scabbing due to the bleeding and cut she had inflicted. I believe this happen when she didn't continue to snip nail but instead pulled off my nail in a plucking motion as if it were eye brows. I mean seriously woman ?? She never said sorry. Instead, she applied drops (didn't bother to tell me what it was) which caused more pain. It hurt more than alcohol ! Was it even an antiseptic !? I once gave this place four stars and was a regular at this place. I stopped going to them because I was no longer happy with their service but decided to give them another shot. My experience was about a 3-3.5, but the average score between all of us who went (5 girls) is a 2-2.5, so rounding down. Sadly, this was one of our least favorite nail salon experiences. We made an appointment for 2:40 pm on a Saturday, and 3/5 of us ran 10 minutes late. The other girls were halfway through their pedicures when we arrived, and the 3 late birds were sat right away to make up for lost time since they had booked appointments right after ours. The salon is on the smaller side, and they have 7 chairs available for pedicures/manicures. They have a good variety of colors to choose from, and different brands such as OPI, Essie, X Factor, etc, although I wish they had a wider selection of OPI colors. You have to share the space with people getting massages, and they ask you to keep your voices down, which is awkward and takes away from the relaxation aspect of getting a pedicure, since who wants to feel like they're in a library?? I liked that they give you a small tub for your feet so that you know it's sanitary. However, it meant that there was no massage chair, so a tough trade-off to make. My nail technician was a man (Nam), who seemed nice, and was very efficient, but not at all talkative. The only thing she did was put all 5 stamps on the same stamp card for my friend to get her halfway to a free pedicure, and the cost of the rest of us 4 girls since we didn't get a stamp card! Basically, nothing was done. Either way, we already knew none of us would be returning here- we felt the pedicure was average at best, and at a high price point compared to other nail salons we've been to in SF. I like that they have a range of options so it is easy to Taylor based on time and availability. The place is casual, clean, therapists are well trained and service is consistent, although some therapists are clearly better than others. Really had high hopes for this place and was very disappointed! A friend and I went in for the 70 minute massages but they had a few different options to choose from once we arrived so we ended up getting a 30 min foot/30 min upper back massage. Our appointment was scheduled for 3:15 and it took about 10 minutes to get our room setup and then another 10 minutes before the massage even started. This was already a bit frustrating since we had planned activities afterward and now were about 20 minutes late. Let me preface this by saying I normally like strong pressure massages - this was just too much. The foot massage was unimpressive. Either he was gentling rubbing my toes or digging his thumb into the bottom of my foot - there was no happy medium. The back massage was horrible - I told him twice to please do it more gently and still he continued to put his whole body weight on my back, using his elbow. So much that the pressure on my throat made it hard to breath. I kept readjusting and was really wishing it would just be over.
