We've always walked around this plaza and also passed by Tokiwa Ramen. Most times it's always been closed, even in the early afternoon. This time we made it a point to come in time before everything was sold out. When we arrived, we got seated very quickly. The inside was designed very minimal, simple, and clean. My boyfriend ordered the Yuzu Shio Ramen and I ordered the Hokkaido Miso Ramen. We both added chicken to our dishes as well. Both of our ramen were good. I liked the citrus notes in the Yuzu Shio, it was a very light broth. For me, the Hokkaido Miso Ramen was more of my style. I liked the creamy broth. It was robust, I like the umami and savory flavors. All of the veggies tasted fresh. The green onions and the mushrooms were my favorite. And the noodle consistency was just how I liked it to be. Chewy, not too soft or overcooked. Of course the miso ramen had 3 types of miso bases so it would be salty, it was just a tad saltier than I would've liked. But it didn't take away from the whole dish, I still liked what I ordered. All in all, we had a good experience. Also they only take debit or cash. I didn't realize that until later so when I was trying to pay, of course it wouldn't take my credit card at all. So yeah that's one thing to keep in mind. Obviously Tokiwa Ramen is known for their ramen, but I was also surprised to see rice bowls on their menu too. I have yet to go to another ramen place in the city that outranks this one in terms of flavour, quality and portions. I have been coming here for 5+ years but I have yet to try the whole menu because I can't get past the spicy goma. The spicy goma broth is hearty and has a depth of pork, you can tell they boil the broth for hours to get that sweet umami from the pork. The spicy goma doesn't come with char sui but the ground pork compote they put on top of it is mouthwatering, you won't even be thinking of the char sui. The pork rice bowl come with their pork, rice, sweet teriyaki and a ton of green onion. The onions definitely balance out the richness of the pork and sweet teriyaki, definitely get this is you are on the hungrier side. The yuzu shio is a very bright ramen, it has a very strong citrus lemon taste throughout. I only have little tastes because I can't get over the spicy goma. I was in town and was craving a bowl of ramen. I found this restaurant after a quick search. There was a line up already at noon. I put my name down and we waited about half an hour before we were seated. After looking over for menu, I decided on black garlic pork soup and gyoza to share. Food arrived fairly quickly. The first sip of the broth was amazing. The broth was flavourful and full of depth. It was simply delicious. The pork charshu was a bit thin, but was seasoned well. Hiding in the broth was half a soft boiled marinated egg. No complaints on the egg as I enjoy a soft yolk. The rest of the toppings were decent (ie wood ear mushroom, bean sprouts, green onion and bok choy). The bou gyoza were fried perfection. The filling was tasty with a slightly crispy exterior was great. Service was great. Staff checked in on us fairly often to refill water and clear up finished bowls. Most ramen tastes the same to me, but here, the ramen just tastes better. You can really tell the quality of the food. The broth is creamy and the noodles are portioned well. The service is actually super quick - the only thing I'd note is it can get super busy and you might have to put your name on a waitlist. I had the black garlic (which is the same as the Tokyo one except it has garlic oil) and it was very garlicky - I love garlic so I was a fan, but if you're looking for a subtle garlic taste you might not enjoy this. Came here Saturday 12:30PM. Place was full and we had to wait 15minutes to get a table. Place is quite small and your quite close to your neighbours. My friend who took me also said there is a "shared" table where you sit at the same table next to complete strangers. We also got 2 cups of the Genmaicha - green tea with roasted brown rice. Lovely flavor but environment kind of makes you feel rushed as staff are asking if you are done and there is a line of people waiting. Genmaicha was a great flavorful tea. Friend recommended the Goma Goma so I got it. 10/10 best ramen. The Nikumiso (chopped pork) was sooooo flavorful (don't forget to mix it into the soup for added flavor) but each bite that had a chunk of pork was bursting with flavor. Friend got the Spicy Goma which looks exactly the same but spice was wayyyy to much for me. He was sweating so it definitely had kick. Noodles were good but very long and messy and we both ended up with sauce on our shirts! This has been sitting in my drafts for over a year so I'll finally post this review. I am from Los Angeles and was visiting Edmonton for a week, so I asked locals on Reddit where I should eat and so many people recommended Tokiwa Ramen! In particular, my good friend from U of A gave high praise for Tokiwa and said it was the best ramen in the city, so I decided to give it a go. The first day I went, it was a busy Saturday morning, I got there 20 minutes before opening, and there was still a line that I had to wait in, so keep that in mind and prepare for that, get there early enough if it's a Saturday morning and you want to avoid waiting in line. The ramen was amazing, so flavorful, so nuanced, and I never had ramen quite like it before, it was the Yuzu Shio. So delicious, the service and staff was amazing as well. The second day I went was on a weekday around 1 PM and there was no wait that time, I was seated immediately. I had the Spicy Goma, and it was so good that I still am thinking about it even now, even while surrounded by all the ramen shops here in LA. The Spicy Goma was my favorite because I have a knack for spicy foods. Definitely try Tokiwa Ramen, it was one of my favorite eats while I was in Edmonton. read more

The ambience of the restaurant was so calming and reserved. Love the interior design and was still very spacious. Not a long wait. Service was very nice and straightforward. The ramen came out fairly soon. It was a gorgeous bowl of art. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen and immediately tried the broth and it was so full of flavor without the saltiness overtaking. Creamy yet savory. The noodle were cooked to perfection and had a great chewy texture to them. The chashu was not my favorite due to the fat retaining the chewiness than I'm used to. I typically like when the fat is rendered a lot to where it almost melts in your mouth. It was definitely a delicacy, and as a hardcore ramen lover, I was amazed. The ramen was not bad. My husband ordered the Tonkatsu and I ordered Goma Goma. The goma goma is like tan tan which is one of my favorite ramen. My husband's tonkatsu ramen wasn't the typical milky soup we're used to getting when we get ramen in San Diego (still dreaming of the day I can visit Japan). I personally did not like the tonkatsu ramen as much. I'd prefer the goma goma with a side of chashu. The broth was delicious and the noodles were cooked well. I have been coming here for the last year and I am complete thrilled to have finally gotten the courage to try it. I have crohns disease and a sensitive stomach as a result and do not really ever like to get experimental. I always have the tokyo tonkotsu. I am not a fan of pork, but geez this is so tasty, I go at least twice a week and would go more often if my schedule had the time. My husband likes the spicy goma, says it has a nice little kick. Thanks to the recommendation of my lunch date and dear friend, today's dining destination was @tokiwa_ramen in the Brewery District... a super cool, intimate and cozy, minimalist-chic ramen joint. She had told me it was the best in the city, so we had to put it to the test. (Spoiler alert, it lived up her her hype) It is immediately apparent that this is THE ramen spot from the moment you walk in- the place is bumpin'! The service was extremely quick. I am clearly on a ramen kick at the moment and I can think of no better type of food to be touring! Last week I wrote about where ramen began in Edmonton and this week I'm writing about where it has ended up. We're bringing out the big guns with Tokiwa, widely regarded as the best ramen shop in the city. They've only been open a few years but in that time have indisputably risen to the top. CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019 list named them one of the Best of Oliver and 124th Street and EDify Magazine awarded them Best Soup 2022. The Oliver (Brewery District) restaurant operates with a "no funny business" attitude: they either have soup or they don't. There's even a neon sign that lights up to say "NO SOUP" when they are sold out for the day. Which happens basically every day. If you want to ensure that your ramen dreams come true, I would recommend showing up right when they open - which is at 11am every day. Tokiwa isn't a place for dinner, as they close at 3pm and are usually sold out before then. I showed up at 10:45am on a Sunday and no one had begun to line up yet. Moments later, some people started standing by the door so I hopped out of my car and took my place in the queue. By time the doors opened fifteen minutes later there was a lineup down the side of the building and not everyone was able to be seated. If you don't want to get stuck waiting and you don't want to risk the sad "NO SOUP" sign, my advice is to roll up shortly before they open for the day. The restaurant space is small, minimalistic, and modern. There's a contrast between pale and black wood which keeps things very clean and straight forward. The open kitchen is firing on all cylinders, constantly. The restaurant contains roughly 10-15 tables plus the bar seating by the kitchen, and let me assure you that every single seat will be occupied. The room is bright and the aroma in the air is tantalizing. Being that I was able to get myself into the door second in line, I was seated right away and tended to immediately by the friendly and efficient servers. With a table by the window, I had a front row seat to just how many people were trapped waiting outside, waiting for their turn. It was a lot. The first thing that I did was select a beverage. Genmaicha tea (my favourite) is available, as are several beer and sake options. However, I loved the idea of the Cold Brew Unsweetened Tea (Fukasmushi (Green) - $3.50) which sounded ideal for our warming spring weather (plus mouthfuls of hot soup!). The glass was large and I was surprised by the lime-green colour! Specks of tea swirled within and each sip was cool and refreshing. The flavour of green tea was light and enjoyable, without being too overpowering. The fact that it was not sweetened at all was my ideal preference. They also offer this drink in an organic houjicha black tea if green isn't your bag. Obviously, the whole entire "thing" at Tokiwa is the ramen, however I was curious about what else they serve. There are a few rice bowls to choose from and one "appetizer, "which I decided to order. The Bou Gyoza (4 pieces (pork) - $6.50). Every culture has a dumpling and Japan has gyoza! I liked the unique shape of these gyoza! Most of the time they will be served in that half-moon shape and these ones seemed more easy-going, which I like. They're just fast and loose and getting shit done at Tokiwa! The golden rectangular dough encased a delicious and savoury pork combination and were easy to eat. I loved dunking my bites into the gyoza sauce. These felt simple, yet delicious, and a great way to round out the meal. Next, of course, was the reason why people line up. Prepared in-house daily using quality ingredients that are locally sourced whenever possible and created in limited batches: It's ramen time. Tokiwa offers two base soups; a ten hour pork soup and a six hour chicken soup. From these stocks they are able to serve ten different ramen options, all with different flavour profiles and spice levels. I knew that for my first visit I wanted to try the ten hour pork soup but I didn't know which one to choose! I'd heard that the black garlic one was very good, but after asking the server which one was the most popular (and noting that almost everyone around me was eating it) I decided to choose the Spicy Goma (Moderately spicy goma goma - $16.50). The ramen comes with wood ear mushrooms, a half boiled egg, bean sprouts, Shanghai bok choi, and green onion. The spicy goma also comes with nikumiso (chopped pork) and a chili oil drizzle, and is generally one of the spiciest soups on the menu. Lucky for me, I am way into spice! This soup looks fiery and dangerous from the first moment that you set your eyes on it. I couldn't wait to dig in! Grabbing my wooden ladle, I began to sip the broth itself, the most important and labour-intensive component in ramen. I loved it. Tokiwa Ramen is located in the brewery distract of downtown Edmonton. Despite being downtown, they have excellent parking above ground or heated underground! This ramen shop has limited hours from 11am-3pm and they tend to sell out quickly. I recommend that you get here right at opening, otherwise you'll have to wait outside (even during the winter). The line moves fairly quickly but it's something to keep in mind. So far I've tried the Goma Goma and Black Garlic Ramen. I like both but if you favor spicy flavors, go for the Goma Goma. The only let down to the bowl was the pork chashu, felt like it could have been cooked for longer for a more tender bite. There was still fat along the meat that was very chewy which isn't how I like my protein in my ramen. We arrived a short while after they opened and there was no line up at all and most importantly, none of their soups had sold out yet... HOLLAAA! Definitely come here early in case anything runs out. But... the ramen here was just okay. Texture of the noodles were good. The ramen was presented quite nice - simple with fresh toppings, a good ramen egg. But the broth was underwhelming. The tonkatsu broth really lacked that deep, rich, and milky flavour of a good tonkatsu soup base. The black garlic really added nothing to the bowl. The shio broth is good for anyone with a preference for a lighter palate - it's a relatively good clean bowl of broth. Also, the little pork rice bowl was alright, it was more flavourful than any of the ramens that we had. The prices here are very decent as well, it's quite comparable to Toronto ramen joints. Service here is amazing though! Everyone is very friendly, helpful, and polite. They are efficient and you get your food at a very good speed. By far the best Ramen in the city. Great mulit dimensional broth..enough variety to choose from without being overwhelming, and perfectly chewy noodles. Definitely reminded me of Japan. Prompt service. A little sterile in terms of décor and making you feel welcome, but there is such a huge line for ramen that you feel guilty lingering. Delicious green tea. We also tried the gyoza. The filling was tasty but I found them a little small in size. Really delicious dipping sauce. My friend had the TOKYO TONKOTSU Tokyo style, shoyu (soy) broth. She loved the pork in it. The 10 pork black garlic soup was deliciously garlic and the broth was smooth and had a complex flavour with a tiny bit of spice hit. We also had the veggie goma - which was so creamy and rich. The array of veggies and the tofu was perfect! All the ramen bowls come with boiled egg, wood ear mushrooms, micro greens, bean sprouts, lotus root and bok choi. I have to put a shout out to their service! Which blew me away because with the expectation of the crazy line and smaller serving space I wasn't sure what to expect, especially with our little 1 year old. I love that someone quite frequently comes outside to get the names of people waiting and putting them on a list, she noticed our baby and right away asked if we would need a high chair. We arrived around 11:25am and got in after about 20 minutes. Seated and the server came out with plastic bowl and utensils for our baby. Order taken and food out in what literally felt like 5 minutes! It was piping hot and delicious and so filling! I love too that they didn't rush us to leave, gave us time to enjoy our meal without the looming pressure of getting in and getting out so they could serve the next person. We did have time to chat with a couple people in line who were quite experienced Tokiwa veterans and they impressed us with their knowledge about the establishment and how it came to be, and they raved about how good every dish they have ever tried here has been. At first I thought everyone was crazy when they told me the line for Tokiwa would go down the block. I ignored everyone's recommendation of getting there before 11am. So, on my lunch break I strolled on down at 12:30. THE LINE WAS MASSIVE. Fast forward to the next day, I smartened up and got there at 11:40 sharp. Standing in the brisk Edmonton environment I waited and waited for ramen. From the very second you step in, there is a group of waiters and waitresses waiting to seat you. Their seating plan was super fast and efficient and got a majority of the line seated quick. I was super nervous that Tokiwa wouldn't live up to the hype of standing in the freezing cold and I would be disappointed with the outcome. I was wrong. Before I could take a sip of my hot tea, a huge bowl of ramen was placed in front of me! I ordered the spicy miso ramen, and my boyfriend ordered the Aka Kara (spicy with 3 types of Chili peppers). Both were packed with flavour and beautifully presented. We also ordered the BOU gyoza that were super crispy, but not oily. My go-to place for a Sunday brunch ramen! I know the long lines can turn anyone crazy but just get there earlier and you won't have to wait. Tokiwa is my favorite, beef-based, but Black garlic is also pretty good, stronger but good. I tried also the rice bowl with pork belly, yummy! This is a fast service type of place, if you are waiting in line, take a look at the menu so you can order as soon as you are seated. A good green tea will be a perfect match. My recommendation is not to have more than 4 people with you as it is very hard to find the big table free. If your party is 4 or more my recomendation is to split into groups of 2, 3 or 4. I'm sure this was mentioned already but do not wait until closing time as almost 80% of the times the soup runout an hour ahead of time. I have been wanting to try this place since it opened, but every time I got there, I got the "No Soup" sign, like I was trapped in a Seinfeld episode. Saturday morning, texting with a buddy who was breaking fast after some medical tests, I ask him what he wants. He wants spicy ramen. Knowing Tokiwa opened at 11AM, we headed over. When we arrived, at the stroke of 11AM, the restaurant wast packed, but there were 2 seats at the bar. It was a double win, because I like sitting at the bar in noodle joints and Izikayas because that is close to where the magic happens. This place runs like a well oiled machine, and the staff are pleasant and courteous at every turn. The menu is not large, but there are several variations of pork and chicken stock, a few rice dishes and just a couple of vegetarian options, though I expect they are delicious. ALL ramen bowls come with Boiled Egg, Wood Ear Mushroom, Micro Greens, Bean Sprouts, Lotus Root and Shanghai Bok Choi. I opted for the Goma Goma Ramen, my Buddy went with the Spicy Goma, which is essentially the same soup, but with WAY more chili oil on top. My Goma Goma was sublimely delightful. It was sweet, savoury, creamy with little sour notes. The broth was what really good sex would taste like, if it were a liquid. The egg was cooked to perfection, as were the assorted fungus and veggies within. I do not usually eat a big breakfast, and halfway through this bowl I was considering getting half to go, but I could not stop eating. I was consumed in the act of consumption. In the end I finished every drop and morsel and was further consumed with regret that I could not possibly eat a second bowl. I also had a wonderful unsweetened green tea, which had the earthy flavour of Mother Nature's left teat. When I drink tea like this, I am reminded of the simplicity (simplcitea?) of the beverage, at it's root, and it's history. Deep, deep tea. Tokiwa is what I think a real Japanese Ramen joint would be like. It's popularity reinforces this. It is not a big restaurant, but they make excellent use of the space. Yup, this ramen is good. Soup is killer. Noodle has great texture and chew. Soup options are varied, but not ridiculous. Pork or chicken based soup, variations from there. Pork based is creamy, nap inducing luxury. Chicken based is clear, pure, not heavy. Biking afterward? maybe. Accouterments like the black mushrooms, bok choy, bean sprouts, crispy renkon make sense. Recently I came here for lunch with a girlfriend and surprisingly we only had to wait for 5 mins before we got a table! Shortly after we were seated the line up outside began to form but definitely moves quickly. I have tried literally all the ramen here and they are all so delicious. Best Ramen in Edmonton for sure. This time I had the spicy goma and I was so excited to eat it that I forgot to take a picture! Hahaha sorry guys. If you're feeling cold and need to warm up, head over to Tokiwa Ramen you will not be disappointed. Another cool side not about this great local gem is that they are doing their part to help the environment. The second you walk in the door you know. This place envelops your senses with warm, rich aromas of meat & broth, the murmur of casual conversations and the clink & sip of delicious ramen being devoured. There was a bit of a wait to get in and the unlit neon sign over the door haunted my foodie soul. No Soup. Please, please don't run out of soup while we're waiting.... We were ushered to a small table at the far end of the restaurant, handed a single sheet menu and asked about a beverage. Our server was friendly, and highly efficient. I received my cold green tea and was a bit surprised at how delicious it was. I thought I detected a touch of sesame in there. I ordered the goma goma with a side of bou gyoza. Hubby had the pork rice bowl. This place has some crazy efficiency going on because our food arrived at warp speed! I surveyed the big, beautiful steamy bowl of goodness and the tools I was given to tackle it (the football pun is necessary because we were on the way to the Grey Cup game). I sat with chopsticks and adorable wooden soup sipping ladle while observing the experienced folks around me. They expertly twirled & sipped, I fumbled & slurped, eventually settling into a technique that neither made me look like a complete newbie or a seasoned pro but somewhere in between. The ramen was divine! The rich, flavourful, broth was perfectly seasoned and needed NOTHING else added to it. It was slightly creamy with an abundance of delicious ground pork throughout. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the variety of veg made this a delicious and interesting dish. Hubby's pork rice bowl was tasty and the gyoza, although a pretty small portion, were quite enjoyable. Every staff member was busy and efficient, working hard at keeping the wait time to be seated as short as possible. It was snowing when we went there. When I opened the door, there was this warm steamy restaurant with a very good smell in it. We sat down and saw the menu. The price was good. We ordered. A gentleman suggested me to get the citrus flavored broth. I picked that and also we ordered some gyoza as appetizer. It was made from scratch and it tasted amazing. It was the most delicious gyoza I've ever had. The food was really good and tasted good. The staff were polite and helpful and a very pleasant atmosphere with good music. This place really hit the spot on a rainy day. We made sure to get there shortly after it opened since it's known to get busy. We were kindly greeted and seated by a staff member. Our server came over right away and went over the menu. I ordered the Goma Goma. The broth was a 10 hr pork broth it was delicious. There were some nice veggies, mushrooms and greens along with a good portion of ramen noodles. Also A half an egg and I nice portion of ground pork. I loved the subtle flavours of sesame and ginger. I was so full and could not finish, but if you have a large appetite you can add extras to your soup. I like things spicy so I added more chilli to it (I should of just got the spicy Goma) It was a nice bright clean space as well. A lot of smaller tables along one wall. We sat at a larger, communal type table. The place was already busy by 11:15, once they sell out of soup they close shop for the day. read more

First time here with the husband for a late lunch on Friday and it did not disappoint. We both ordered the Tokyo Tonokatsu Ramen and the broth was creamy and rich. Noodles perfectly chewy. It comes with wood ear mushrooms, half an egg, a piece of bok choy and a fried lotus root chip on top. I appreciated the chip - it was tasty. Wished there was more veggies though. Portions adequate for the price. Service was quick and efficient. The space bright and clean. We'll be back for our next ramen fix.
