Two stars for the service I received from one of the bartenders when I visited two weeks ago on a Saturday night. First, let me express my love for the food, but unfortunately I received terrible service from a bartender that left a bad taste in my mouth. I approached the bar to order take out and it so happened that TOKU was extremely packed that night. I asked one of the bartenders if I can order takeout; two orders of shrimp tempura rolls. His facial expression got visibly despondent and he expressed to me that the wait will be an hour and a half. I then asked him if I sit at the bar would it be a shorter wait, he replied to me and said "yes, but you must find a seat first." I pondered a little to decide if I wanted to wait and I decided to just take my meal to go. I finally got his attention from a far, after 10 minutes and told him I was ready to make an order. This particular bartender never looked my way again to assist me and not to mention he assisted several customers that came after me on numerous occasions within the time period I was there. Moreover, I waited an additional five minutes and got the attention of an amazing bartender whom I asked to place the order and he told me that my order will be ready in 20 minutes. He checked in with me throughout the 20 minutes to make sure I was okay and gave me updates with my order. I do not understand why one bartender would tell me that I would have to wait an hour and a half for shrimp tempura rolls and another bartender would have my order in and presented to me within 20 minutes. Something here doesn't feel or seem right. I am highly disappointed, due to the fact that I am a regular customer here. I'm not sure if I will be back regularly, BUT giving ALL customers the same treatment is highly recommended and imperative in any place of business!!! The 2 stars are mostly for the decor and service. The food is really not worth much discussion at this swanky joint in the Miracle Mile. The positive: Great service. Your order gets to you quickly and the tables are cleaned up efficiently. Some may find this too rush-rush but I didn't see it that way. I prefer to have access to a waiter and/or busser who can clean up or bring new chopsticks, soy sauce, extra ginger etc. right away. Tasteful modern decor. Clean lines, lux leather seating, minimalist Asian accent pieces on the walls and soft lounge soundtrack are right up my alley. It's all done tastefully and without gimmicks like some places that think having a pink and blue accent lite shine thru the ceiling makes it modern chic. Nice list of exotic martini's: Jamaican ginger martini and mango martini are the two that i tried and they did not disappoint. The negative: Food - not a single item that we had was outrightly impressive. By that I mean for taste. The ingredients were no doubt first rate but the preparations just lacked depth and taste. Pork gyoza were so-so. Chicken (not sure what it's called) on a skewer was disappointing. Kung pao chicken is better at most take out spots. King crab California roll for $12 was not much better than the ones you find boxed at stop and shop for $3.99. chicken vegetable soup was tasteless and the 2 other maki rolls that we ordered (yellowtail and scallion; pacific roll) lacked inspiration. I have been to Toku a few times for dinner, and it has always been fantastic food with EXCELLENT service! I had to give them the credit they deserve with a great review. I was there last night, and the busboy would be filling up my water glass before I even took my last sip, they would clean up the plates as we took the last bit of food.. They were so attentive, and our waiter was very nice (i forgot to ask his name) And the food.... Where do I begin?! The skirt steak is to die for! their sushi is always fresh! and we always order several appetizers... The pork buns melt in your mouth! the rock shrimp.. everything everything is sooo delish!! Love it. (the only thing Ive evern ot liked there was the lamb ribs as an appetizer, but it could just be my taste, but they definately made up for it with the steak) YUM!! I've been to many of the Poll Brother's restaurants and I love most of them, but this one is not particularly my favorite. The decor of Toku is fabulous, the whole atmosphere & the fact that you can eat outside is great-but the food was not TOO impressive. I'm not exactly sure if I didn't order the right things, but the few standout items I ordered was the fried rice, the seared tuna and the spicy tuna dip. I wasn't impressed with the sushi menu. It is however a great place to go if you're into the bar scene at night. I would definitely go back-but only if I was recommended a few other things to try. read more

When you're shopping at Americana and need a light bite for lunch, this is a great option. The sushi is great, along with the salads. The vibe is very cool, and I like the outside seating option. We took my parents, who rarely eat anything but Chinese food, here for Christmas Eve dinner, and they loved it. We Irish mother in law, who also loves Chinese food, also joined us and she raved about the food and service. We started with the edamame, rock shrimp tempura, shrimp dumplings, lamb spare ribs, gyoza, chicken ramen, kobe beef shishito peppers (though there was no beef) and teriyaki sliders. In hindsight, we should have also ordered the Riverstone BBQ as the table next to us ordered it and it looked delicious. However, for 6 people, this was plenty for us to share. My father ordered the roasted lobster, and he could barely finish his entree. My mother thoroughly enjoyed her skirt steak, and my son and I each got the filet of beef (I loved the mushroom ragout). My wife ordered the Ja Jaing Mein and lucky for me, she couldn't finish it and it turned out to be an awesome reheated breakfast the next day. My daughter loved the Geisha roll, and my mother in law couldn't get enough of the shrimp pilaf. The food is very good, but it is very, very pricey for Asian food. Gorgeous Restaurant with a hip bar crowd at night(im too old for that). Its not NYC prices but its close. I wouldnt make it a weekly spot but more like an anniversary or celebration spot for food. After the experience I had at the Toku in Manhassett today, I feel like the restaurant isn't even worthy of one star. A friend and I decided to have lunch at the Toku at the Americana. When we walked into the restaurant we were barely greeted by the hostess. He didn't make any eye contact with us and communicated indirectly as he told the servers to take care of us. This set the scene for our experience. We noticed that we were receiving looks from other customers inside the restaurant, but we decided to ignore it because we didn't want it to take away from the experience. My friend and I (both Black/African-American customers) also noticed that the two of us were awkwardly seated - all the way in the back at a very small table right in-front of a family of 4 (on the left) and a family of 6 (on the right), which completely defeated the purpose of social distancing. There were many seating options available that would distance us (for our health and safety) and when asked if we could be moved, the hostess completely ignored the request and put other customers there. My second complaint is with the servers. The server for our table kept our encounters very brief. SO BRIEF that she only let one of us order. She took my friends order and immediately walked away without taking mine down. I have been to many restaurants, and I can honestly say that I have never experienced something like that before. She didn't even ask me if I was "still deciding" or "unsure", she just completely left without taking down my order. We had to wave her down to tell her that I was ordering a separate meal and when I asked about the portion size she told me that I was getting a full portion, to which I only got half. I paid 25 dollars for half of the portion. I understand that Toku is expensive, but I have never paid 25 dollars for six mediocre pieces of sushi. I've had more exquisite sushi at local fast food chains. The quality of the food, service, and setting are awfully underwhelming. The servers are clumsy; constantly bumping into tables and they broke three glasses three different times. It's one thing to be an expensive restaurant, but it's another thing to be a less-than mediocre restaurant that markets itself as lavish and luxurious when it's really just dirty-looking and overpriced. I can't help but believe that the service I received was based on the color of my skin and physical appearance. I know that the servers, hostess, and the manager are racist. The manager passed our table multiple times for an hour with no food or service and did not even acknowledge us and ask how things were going. No wonder why they attract such racist customers. Overall, this was the most unprofessional restaurant I have ever encountered. I would never recommend the Toku in Manhasset to anyone, especially not people of color because they definitely prioritize service to their white customers as they kept them socially distanced while they clumped us to the back with other people of color in the middle of a global health crisis. The restaurant was half empty. I left the table to load a photo for my daughter. During my absence, they brought a sparkler candle. No dessert attached to it. Simply a candle. I missed the whole thing, as I was absent from the table. Toku, if you want to be considered an upscale restaurant and charge the prices charged, then act like one. I was so angry that they brought a candle while I was not at the table. I called the restaurant and was promised management would return my call the next day. I am still waiting. Here's the report. First - I ordered a Martini which was watered down. I noticed that it tasted like Grey Goose flavored water. Yet they charged 18 dollars for it! Then they took the food away before we were finished eating. When we pointed that out, the waiter got defensive and denied it instead of just admitting it.
