As you can see from my past reviews, I have been here the past 3 years in 2023, 2024 and 2025 for dinner at the bar. I was here solo again. I again enjoyed my Sapporo draft beer and unagi don. The owner/manager Ben stopped by to say hello as usual, since he remembers me from my prior three annual visits. My total bill was $33.70 less gratuity. My husband and I walked into Ocean Code without a reservation and luckily got a table. It was a rare date night and I'm glad we had it here. The ambiance is memorable, the food was fantastic, and the service was so sweet. We started out with the agedashi tofu and an avocado salad with tuna added, then shared the hand roll set menu of six rolls (salmon, yellowtail, crab, scallop, spicy tuna, lobster), added one more of eel and one more of tuna, and a bowl of creamy mentai udon. He also got a sake (which you can sample beforehand) and we shared the cheesecake. Everything was pretty on point. The fish was fresh and it's all just so tasty. The meal overall was a great experience, and something different from others you could have in the area. I'm docking a star only because the dessert was so small, we literally finished it in two bites. I felt disappointed, because I wanted more! The filtered water was a small but appreciated detail that set a positive tone for the meal. Food highlights: * Ika Geso Karaage: perfectly crisp with light batter. My favorite handroll was the Toro Truffle, which tasted like I was having a party in my mouth. The fusion of the toro (fatty tuna) and the black truffle oil really hit the Unami (savory) spot. It literally melted in my mouth! I asked for "1/2 the amount of rice" to get a larger sushi to rice ratio and to cut back on carbs. The only disappointment is that they do not make brown rice sushi, like the one my tongue touched at Mikado in Greenwich Village. Although it is not traditional to make sushi with brown rice, its nutty flavor and chewy texture lends some Unami flavor to blander or leaner fish; like yellowtail, halibut and crabmeat. I will come to Ocean Code Handroll Bar again, just to get the Toro Truffle handroll. I could eat that all day long. Yelp check-ins get an offer for a free pint of Sapporo beer or a glass of Yuzu Lemonade. The beer, IMHO, best counteracts the richness of the Toro Truffle. Service is quick, and be sure to tip because the sushi chefs do a magnificent job. read more

Handroll Sushi Bar...fun concept. Just had to check this place out and thanks to Yelper Chun M.'s review, I knew I'd be in good company. Yelp check in got us a free Yuzu Lemonade! (Note: menu doesn't say but the lemonades were all carbonated). We ordered the strawberry lemonade, Yuzu one and Lychee. All three were delicious and I didn't mind the carbonated part but I wish it was disclosed. Onto the food, which is not just hand rolls: Appetizers: karaage and potato croquettes to start. Both were really good - crispy and super light. Perfect sharing appetizers for our party of four. Entrees: 5 Handroll combo consisted of scallop, tuna salad, spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon. All were made one at a time. So each hand roll was presented to me after I finished the previous. The waitress was kept really busy. But she was very nice about it. :-) - creamy udon with mushrooms and topped with a poached egg -- very creamy and Delicious. Totally recommend. Not overly rich. - Chirashi and tuna sashimi a la carte were great, very fresh! I totally - recommend the uni as well - it's from Hokkaido! - Lastly the salmon and ikura don was superb. Generous helping of ikura and loved the sauce that was mixed into the rice. It was a complete dish, not too sweet and a great value. nice small sushi spot that's across from Roosevelt Field mall. when we walked in we were seated promptly by a nice young lady who also turned out to be our waitress and I have to say she was outstanding from beginning to the end. I had fried oysters and a spicy yellowtail roll, both were delicious. I also had the Tokyo blonde beer that has a fruity flavor and was refreshing and absolutely delicious.we also had the fried calamari tentacles that were cooked perfectly. everything that we ordered was fresh and delicious and I definitely will be returning. Even though the word sushi is not in their name, Ocean Code makes some super fresh and tasty sushi in nigiri and handrolls, their specialty. It looks super romantic, smoky and sexy in here! (minus the smoke) The long handroll (sushi) bar along the wall staffed by 3 sushi chefs is cool to watch if you like sitting up front, but we decided to grab 1 of the 2 side tables on a quiet Friday evening after the Van Gogh Elite event down the street. There is another room further down but looks cramped with 4 tables. "Release the Kraken!" The Ika Geso Karaage, deep fried squid tentacles looked like the sea monster of Greek mythology rising up from the sea. I loved the crunchy outside and tender insides. A spicy mustard remoulade sauce for dipping would have gone better with this than the tartar sauce though. Next up, the Premium Set is like a mini omakase in itself. Each of the 6 nigiri pieces is handpicked by the chef and is topped with a complimentary flavor. The salmon was slightly charred and topped with minced daikon & tobiko. The tuna was amazing, topped with a wafer of truffle. The best was the amaebi sweet shrimp topped with the tomalley from the fried shrimp head. The massive fried shrimp head was also included and that was a bonus because you can suck out the remainder of the sweet tomalley. As a supplement, we shared the 3 handroll combo, since handrolls are their specialty. The tuna, yellowtail and salmon weren't extraordinary, but they were smooth and the seaweed cones were stuffed with a lot more fish than rice. The Creamy Mentai Udon is the dish to get and it was REALLY creamy. If it were any creamier, I would have slid down out of my seat! The hint of uni and the runny egg on top made this dish a winner. OK this is one of those spots that surprised me immensely. The exterior is very dark. I thought they were closed. But they were not. And I proceeded to have one of the best Sushi Restaurant meals I've had in a long time. I started with the Yuzu Lemonade which took me by surprise because it was sparkling. Very refreshing. I was served the Scallop Handroll first. The scallop was sweet & tender with a slight kick. I asked for spicy so yours does not have to be. The Nori was perfect! And the scallops were placed all the way to the end. The next roll was the Wagyu Shiso Ikura Handroll. Good flavors. Nice rice to filling ratio. But the pièce de résistance was the Creamy Mentai Udon with poached egg. This creamy subtle but complex sauce paired with the Udon cooked with a slight bite was soooooo delicious. Check in on Yelp for a free drink! Hand rolls are super fresh and average about $7-12 each. Portions are on the smaller side but the raw fish is SO fresh. They did accommodate us and made us custom hand rolls. My kids like the fish slightly torched and they did that too. read more
