This has to be a hidden gem of the city! My best friend and I visited on a Thursday midday which meant we got to enjoy the lunch special. The special comes with Two rolls of your choice, and a soup. The sushi was made fresh, the cucumber salad was refreshing and the vinaigrette just gave it that extra zing. The edamame was nice and warm the perfect little bite. We also ordered a bottle of the elderberry sake which on this cold day left us feeling cozy in these seats. The service, was honestly top notch. Our server was attentive, and very kind. Not what it used to be. This used to be our go to hibachi place in York. Went tonight for dinner and my wife and I were the only 2 people in the entire place other than the staff. I guess that should have been our warning. Overall the food was just very underwhelming. It wasn't bad per se, but it was no where near what it used to be. Hibachi seemed good but if they are busy it's a grind because they only have one chef for their 4 tables. I had a Shrimp Tempura rolls and a Spider Roll. Each was easily the worst I have ever had. We got the coupon clipper and there were 3 or 4 hibachi/sushi places advertising so the competition must be close. This place is byob and is close to Thirsty's so it is a convenient location if you want beer -they are diagonal from the Wine and spirits shop on eastern boulevard. We met our group of 11 and sat in the hibachi seating area which has 4 areas of 16 seats. The service was very good and they got us glassware for the beer and we noticed they are even offering a free beer to adults with the meal. The sushi was easy to order and there was a wide variety, most of our party got hibachi which gave us a show with the meal. The chef was able to keep us entertained, yet did drop utensils on the grill. He was affable though and chatted with my mother in law about TV after the meal. I enjoyed the sushi as it was fresh, but the rolls were just ok, which is where I based my rating mostly. I thought the soup and salad were decent, but could use a little more flavor. All in all there is nothing that sets them far above the other sushi/hibachi places in the area - i do like the interior but Tokyo diner is good for what you get - we got about 7 dollars off for using the clipper which is useful. read more

So here's the thing, we've been here so many times but never on a weekend. It was packed. There are 4 sections and each section has 2 Hibachi Grills. 3 sections were seated and there was only 1 chef. That being said the salmon was over done and there were several pieces of rice that were on the uncooked side. Still impressed how he handled all those people. I join the club in December when I was in town for work. I fell in love with it then. All you could eat for $25 with an initial $10 fee. They have six restaurants around the area. Check out their website for locations. I have hit three of them and they are all great. The places aren't fancy but the food is great. Never had problems with staff, very friendly. Today I drove two hours to come to this restaurant because it was the first one I went to and I had a major sushi urge. I was NOT disappointed!!!! I most definitely will be back. love this place! it's our go to for hibachi & sushi! it's not as 'fancy' as fujihana, but i like the atmosphere a little better! and the sushi seems to have a way better flavor here. tokyo isnt always perfect. if they get busy we can get our sushi later than our dinner. once or twice the rolls could've been more 'spot on'. but they are mostly on the ball, friendly waitstaff... they even have a sushi membership. for $10/yr you can either indulge in 'all you can eat sushi for $25' or 15% off your bill. awesomeness! read more

WOW...is the first word that comes to mind for this place. This restaurant is located in a tiny strip mall and based on the external appearance your first instinct is to find some place else to eat but you need fight that urge and go inside. Once inside you realize the restaurant is much larger than you had thought, clean, and does not look half bad. We were at the restaurant for dinner and were seated promptly even without a reservation. We had both the hibachi and sushi for our meals. No complaints at all about the food or the service. Tokyo Diner is a very elegant Japanese Hibachi Grill/ Sushi Bar. When you enter this restaurant they give you a table and take your drink order. Its a BYOB so if you plan on drinking Saki with your sushi or hibachi grill food, bring your own. I love Hibachi grills. They are very fun for anyone. The chefs are really skilled with their knifes and spatulas. The only problem with Hibachi grills is that if you have seen one, you have seen them all. So if you go to alot of Hibachi Grills, then this isn't going to be any different. I personally don't eat sushi, but the friends that I was with that had the sushi said that it is a great place to get sushi in the York area, granted this is the only place that I know of that serves sushi right. To order the sushi, you can tell the waitress what you want, if you are just getting one roll and hibachi food, or you can get a check sheet of paper and just check off the type of sushi that you would like without butchering how to say the Japanese pronunciation. There was zero fanfare to this hibachi experience even though we told the waitress we were there for my stepson's 18th birthday. The setting was very cold and institutional. No low lighting, no privacy areas, not much decoration, just a typical strip mall restaurant feel. It took 20 minutes for the chef to come over even though we were the only table aside from a table that was already served their meal. The Chef lacked enthusiasm and didn't seem to take pride in his craft, nor want to be there. No smiles. No jokes. No food to catch in your mouth. He worked like a robot. The food was decent. I wouldn't say great, because I've definitely had better hibachi. I only tasted the vegetables (mushrooms were delicious but the squash not so much) since I got sushi; tempura shrimp roll and spicy tuna roll. The color of the tuna was not quite what I'm used to and the texture seemed a little...different. Somewhat unpleasant. Not as though the fish was bad, but certainly didn't taste or look fresh. The tempura shrimp wasn't bad. Smaller shrimp than I've had at other places. The breading was crisp. The pickled ginger was a little lacking in flavor and a bit dry. Presentation of the sushi was not impressive. Just sushi on a white plate with some white pickled ginger and a dollop of wasabi. I also had seaweed salad which wasn't bad. Very large portion, especially for the price. Overall it wasn't a bad meal for the price. I'm sure if I had nothing to compare it to I wouldn't be as critical. If you want a good, fun hibachi experience I wouldn't rely on Tokyo Diner to provide it. If you want a great price and just okay food, this is the spot. read more

Been eating at this place for many years, and have recommended it to many friends in the area. Ate here recently (last Friday night) and everything was very good. We had a party of 4, and between us had lots of chicken, along with some shrimp & salmon. Everything was very good, and well prepared. The service was excellent - they stayed on top of drinks, offering refills often, and clearing away dirty dishes. We enjoyed ourselves very much on this recent visit, just as we have in the past. yummm. this place rocks. i have been here for hibachi several times and it is great. but today i'm going to talk about the sushi. there were three people in my party and all us of got 3 rolls of sushi each. i had the shrimp tempura roll, california roll, and avocado roll. ok so i'm not the most adventurous person when it comes to sushi. but my dining companions were -- they both got spicy and/or raw fish concoctions. all of our rolls were amazing!! served fairly quickly even though the place was packed and they were extremely fresh. rice was great, rolls didn't fall apart, tasted great. not to mention that the presentation here is amazing...the sushi guy literally created a beautiful work of art. our rolls were served with a cucumber salad that was slightly sweet and vinegary = excellent. i also ordered the green salad that had ginger dressing on it...loved it. prices here are excellent, slightly lower than fujihana and they always have a coupon in the clipper magazine (online) for 15% off. for 9 rolls, 2 hot teas, and 1 extra salad the bill was $60 (after the 15% off). pretty awesome! read more

The price is good for the big pile of food that you receive. Tokyo Diner is not only my favorite Sushi Bar, it is also my favorite Restaurant in York, Pa. Compared to some of the other Sushi Bars in York the prices are very friendly, and the Sushi is some of the best I have ever had. My personal favorites are the Yellow Tail Nigiri, the Avocado Eel Roll, and the Flying Fish Roll. Personally I recommend getting the Sushi Meals, as they come with an amazing Soup and Cucumber Salad. I also highly recommend the Dumplings. In addition to the great food the staff are amazingly kind, courteous, personable and hardworking. Overall the restaurant is very clean and orderly as well.
