I tried this food truck in the Foggy Bottom area in front of the GW Gelman undergraduate library. There's still a good selection of food trucks here (maybe 5-6), but certainly far fewer than at places like Farragut Square. There are many kabob/halal and sandwich food trucks, but I only saw one serving Japanese food, so it caught my eye. This is not Sushi Taro-esque Japanese food and you're certainly not paying Sushi Taro prices either. But for what you pay (anywhere from $9-11), I thought the quality was pretty good. The choices are various bento boxes that comes with 5-6 pieces of a roll. Each box also comes with salad with their house ginger dressing and 1 piece each of fried shumai and two other fried things (sweet potato and something else), and a few pieces of edamame. There was also a handwritten sign for a hand roll for an extra $2. We got the osaku chicken roll box ($9) and the Gangnam style box ($10), the latter of which has bulgogi. I thought it mildly creative to name the bento box dish after that popular Korean song Gangnam style, and I haven't seen bulgogi in sushi rolls before, so that was also new. As mentioned, I thought the quality was decent for a curbside sushi set up but don't be expecting top notch quality. Avocado is notorious for oxidizing and turning brown when cut and left out (likewise with apples), and most if not all, the avocado in my rolls had oxidized. The tempura pieces (of the asparagus in my rolls and the fried things that came with the box) were not crispy as they would have been if they'd just been fried and had probably been prepared hours ago. That withstanding, I still enjoyed my box. I really like the ginger dressing (it tastes more orangey than ginger, so not to fear) that came with the salad. Tips for improvement: - Substitute the house salad with seaweed salad (here's a picture if you don't know what I'm talking about: http://www.seaweedsalad.com/) since house salad can be seen as kind of blah to the palate. - I think it's somewhat acceptable that the tempura wasn't fried on the spot, but do cut the avocado on the spot, otherwise as I mentioned, it oxidizes and doesn't look very appealing to eat when it's brown. - Don't leave edamame out. It can become soggy and won't have that crisp texture, and ours were certainly soggy and not crisp. Otherwise like I mentioned, this is basically curbside sushi so I thought for the price of $9-11 bucks, not bad but don't be expecting gourmet sushi.

Around my work place there is a line of food trucks that stretch across a small street. I haven't seen this food truck before so it piqued my interest since I am a huge fan of Japanese food. The truck was nice, pretty, and it looked like there was plenty of options. Looking at the menu I saw takoyaki (octopus balls) which are super amazing if made properly. I wanted a small quick snack to hold me over till dinner since it was a relatively late lunch and takoyaki is relatively smaller when compared to a full on meal, but not too light for me to get hungry any time soon. So the takoyaki appeared on the menu as $6 , but the cashier rang me up saying it was $12. After a brief discussion she was like okay $6. The food came up relatively fast, but what came out was not what I expected. The image shows 6 circular balls covered in sauce and bonito flakes. I got 6 small hockey pucks, and was surprised that beside it was rice, side of pickled ginger, seaweed salad, lettuce and daikon radish. Takoyaki is generally octopus inside batter, topped with bull dog Worcestershire sauce, kewpie mayonnaise, and bonito flakes to top it off. What I got were 6 roundish batters filled with octopus topped with Siracusa mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce... There's nothing wrong with sriracha mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce, but it just wasn't what I bought or was advertised so I felt cheated. Besides the appearance, the overall food, was not terrible if you cover everything in the sauce. I ended up mixing the rice and hockey pucks together since both were really bland without any sauce. Overall, I wouldn't come back here due to service issues, false advertisement of their food, and the bland food.

    Duck Ramen...sorta.
    Doug L.

I probably should have checked yelp before ordering food. I was thoroughly disappointed. There is nothing Tokyo about this truck. I ordered the Duck Ramen and it was bland. Looking at the contents of my "ramen", it looks like they had some leftover ingredients from a salad that they bought from CVS or something. Instead of bok choy, there was spinach, cucumber, egg and tomato. Why are those types of veggies in there? They couldn't even give me a decent egg. The duck was even nice slices shown in their pics, just crispy slithers. I would have been better off with a pack of instant noodles. In fact, I added my coworker's extra instant noodle spice packet to my ramen.

    Tuna don; takoyaki.

Two and a half stars. Friendly cashier and good value for the price of their food-- you get stuffed from the portions they dole out. Tuna don and imitation crab salad were overdressed, but the standard seaweed salad, oshinko, and sad generic greens were a nice way to lighten the meal. Rice was fine, lightly seasoned. Takoyaki was okay and came with a surprising amount of garnish, enough to be a small meal on its own. Fried shumai and tempura shrimp tasted more like the fryer oil than their respective ingredients. I might try their spider or unagi bentos next time if I don't see a more alluring alternative nearby, but so far I'm hesitant to return.

WORST PORTION SIZE EVER! This is the soft shell bento box, and I barely received any soft shell crab as you can see!

Worst portion size ever! DO NOT COME HERE. I ordered the soft shell crab bento box and they had the audacity to serve me only one tiny piece of the deep-fried crab claw and one super small deep-fried shrimp (the images on truck show bento boxes come with two shrimps). Who are they trying to fool? and they are going to charge me $12!? This place is shit! I would advise anyone to NOT come here unless you want to get ripped off. Message to the owner: Learn how to run a business because your small portion tactic is going to make you bankrupt. Find another job now because you're never going to achieve repeat customers.

Hottie in Tokyo Roll Bento Box combo.

4.5 I was very, very impressed with this truck on my first go this past Friday. I got the Hottie in Tokyo Roll Bento Box and it was awesome. Yes, this is sushi out of a truck but, for that, it is pretty damn good sushi. The roll was huge and, as others have mentioned, you also get a salad, a piece of shumai (and I also had a dumpling in mine), two pieces of tempura, and some endamame. I went early so I might have benefited from being one of the first customers to get the most freshly made rolls but everything was crisp and delicious. I also spent the extra $2 and got the special spicy crab handroll which was fabulous. I guess I must suffer from an inadequate appetite but I found the price to food ratio to be perfect. I definitely did not think there was too little and I appreciated the different things in the box. There was enough for a filling lunch AND an afternoon graze so that works in my book as far as value. Service was friendly and efficient and they take cards. Again, I was super impressed and I will definitely be back again. Really digging that we now have a Japanese food truck in DC!

Tokyo in the City is my favorite food truck, and I am here to preach its gospel. You get a whole lotta food for your money here. Each Bento box includes a sushi roll, a 2-piece California roll, a scoop of fried rice, seaweed salad, edamame, a shumai dumpling, and soup. A feast, you guys. A FEAST. Where else are you getting appetizers with your food truck lunch, amiright? Be prepared to wait for a few minutes, since your sushi is made fresh. If you take issue with this, perhaps you'd prefer the shelf-stable sushi at your nearest drug store. Quality takes time. To quote "The Karate Kid": "Patience, young grasshopper." I've made it a life goal to try every item on the menu; I'm halfway through it so far. Join me on this trek, won't you? The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single sushi roll.

Really hard to read menu, but stuff ranges from $9 to 11
    Pam Z.

Sushi from a food truck?? Well, none of this sushi is raw (think tempura rolls), and they give you a good amount of food in their boxes. Mine came with some crispy gyoza, some so-so salad, edamame, and a good sized roll. I also tried the hand roll that was on special (only $2!) and was suitably impressed. Lunch boxes range from $9-11. Tokyo in the City, can you make your menu *less* pretty and more legible? (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/C_DBqeJPyel3eyvPLL8qSQ?select=T17csuOvH04c64M8HbX7NA#T17csuOvH04c64M8HbX7NA ) 3.5 stars

    Hottie in Tokyo bento box
    Napualokelani K.

I like this truck. The guys that work it are nice and friendly. I tried the Hottie in Tokyo Bento Box last week and I really enjoyed it, however, I THINK they may be trying to do too much with the boxes. They put a lot of "extras" in it, but it's such small amounts that you're almost mad when it tastes good cause you want more! Case in point, the single chicken wing in my box. It was TASTY, moist and DEE-licious, however, i was out of luck cause I ate the only one I had! aaahhhhh! Check these guys out.

Spider roll with extra sweet chili sauce on the side!
    Annie T.

I love how Tokyo in the City is coming to my building now. I've only tried about 4 of their rolls and I like the spider roll the best. I love the soft shell crab with the sweet chili sauce in the spider roll. The only issue I have with the spider roll are that the rolls are huge and no way can I eat it in one bite, but I think this roll has the best flavor. The Fuji roll is also good with the jumbo lump crab meat on top. For $12 it comes with a decent amount of food; 2 California rolls, 2 spicy tuna rolls, 1 shumai (dumpling), seaweed salad, edamame, miso soup, and the specialty roll you order. There is a bit of a wait for your order to be ready, but I don't mind waiting for tasty goodness.

eel box with slices of inari (tofu skin)
    Sandra L.

I've been visiting this truck for over 4 years and it never disappoints! Recently ordered the eel box (unadon) and it was great. Came with their usual sides (salad, dumpling, random yummy stuff) and two thick slices of eel. This isn't the meager, thin looking slices you may get as grocery store sushi. It's comparable to the kind I'd get at a real sushi restaurant. Wish there was more eel.. I may request for additional slices next time. It's worth it! Also if you're a fan of hand rolls - they have them but usually it's not listed on the menu. just gotta ask!

Portions are generous and there are quite a few options to choose from. I ordered the fuji roll with shrimp tempura and spicy crab meat - the order also came with a side or seaweed salad and vegetable gyoza. Definitely liked the food and will be coming back again!

    Yummm Sushi take out !

We have been looking for a sushi restaurant in our neighborhood and was hoping Yosaku could be a frequent family dining destination. Instead we were publicly called out by our servers for not finishing our food. Apparently it was happy hour where certain nigiri sushi items are $2 per piece. There is only one sushi menu - the kind you fill out with a pencil. One side is nigiri and the other side are rolls. Yosaku does not have a comprehensive menu of all their sushi offerings. For example, we asked for uni (sea urchin) and ikura (salmon roe) that was not listed on the menu. Our server Thung had to look up the price of the items on a computer. We ordered multiple rolls and a la carte items. Less than half our order was "happy hour items". After our first round, the hostess came over and tried to give our check to us even though we had not asked for the check. We told the hostess we wanted to order more food. The hostess made a weird face and said loudly "You can't order happy hour anymore". We were confused as there was still 30 minutes to happy hour. The hostess then brought over Thung who very loudly in a crowded restaurant accused our family of trying to take advantage of the restaurant's happy hour. Thung kept saying that happy hour items were for dine in only not take out. We explained that we are clearly dining in and had been dining in the restaurant for more than 1 hour. If we were ordering take out, we would not have parked our car, sat in the restaurant, and be expected to tip for service on the entire order. Thung said Yosaku's happy hour was like an All You Can Eat sushi restaurant where diners have to finish all their food before ordering more and diners are charged for the food they don't finish. Thung accused our family of trying to cheat the restaurant. Everyone in the restaurant started looking at our family. We responded that Yosaku is clearly not an All You Can Eat sushi restaurant. We said there is only one menu and nowhere on the menu does it say all food ordered has to be finished at the restaurant. We pointed out that we ordered more items a la carte than happy hour items - such as uni for $7.95 per piece and ikura for $5.95 per piece and specialty rolls for $10+ per roll. Our total bill would come out to more than $50 per person. Thung then stated how you people are always trying to cheat the restaurant during happy hour by ordering too much sushi and taking their leftovers home. We replied "you are making our family uncomfortable - we are trying to order 2 more pieces of sushi and dessert." Thung said "You can order but it will be a to go order and we will charge you the to go price. No happy hour." We were motified as everyone was now looking at our table. We asked for the check and told them it was unnecessary to embarass us for requesting 2 more pieces of sushi and dessert. The price difference was only $5. So for $5 total, the restaurant felt the need to berate and shame our family and disincentive us from ever returning. Note on food: We ordered tobiko (flying fish roe) which is a traditionally a orange color and is orange in the picture on the restaurant's website. Instead, our flying fish roe was black. We have never seen flying fish roe that color.
