This place is hit or miss but mostly miss lately. I don't know why I keep ordering hoping I'll get decent results. I order from door dash a lot. In my last order the egg role wasn't fried all the way through and my bbq spare ribs were missing even a smear of sauce. The time prior my season scallops were literally just coated in breading but not cooked at all. It was like eating corn meal. The time before that my general tsos chicken was so gummy and chewy I couldn't eat it, and again something weird was going on with the breading. PERFUNCTORY .... you can choose two definitions. One is the Oxford Oxford Languages Dictionary that states "perfunctory is an action or gesture carried out with a minimum of effort or reflection" or you just have to order take out at the Tokyo Mandarin and their service and food preparation defines perfunctory as clearly as any dictionary. I debated visiting another restaurant in this plaza but somehow sushi called as if often does so I grabbed a menu from this take-out only restaurant obviously impacted and changed by the times we live in (Once it had what appears to have been a nice limited seating dining area but now the entire place is pretty much trashed so that window service only can be provided. Their fish tank up front looks like it longs for the old days as the golden fish swim through algae colored waters.). The lunch menu offered the expected and I went for the universally common two rolls plus soup or salad. I always opt for the soup choice and chose their tuna roll and yellow tail with scallion; soup was miso. The woman upfront on the other side of the wall's approach to me as a customer gave hints of their goal to have TOKYO MANDARIN become a new definition of PERFUNCTORY in any and all published dictionaries. She acted as if she was talking once again to a wall not a human. TEN MINUTES she said in an almost inaudible tone ... oh wait it was a monotone there was no tone nor emotion nor interest. So, I return to the same dour woman who merely points to an extremely dirty credit card reader when I hold my card up in the air. I immediately feel sorry for my credit card and consider offering it a bath when we get home .... definitely spraying it. Of course no thank you but again TOKYO MANDARIN will never become a dictionary definition of perfunctory if it starts to spend time thanking customers or smiling at them or cleaning credit card readers, fish tanks, or front end counters. I did give them silent credit for putting the hot soup in a separate bag from my sushi as I carried my lunch back to my car. Drum roll for the unveiling .... by now the word perfunctory was firmly affixed in my mind so it should come as no surprise for those of you still engaged in reading this review that the soup was bland, nondescript but I could tell that it was Miso Soup not Clear Broth. The temperature was still almost hot so it had made the car ride home in ready to eat condition. And, now the sushi rolls. Two very simple rolls because after all most lunch specials at sushi or Japanese or pseudo-Japanese joints do not include their high end rolls as lunch specials. Tuna and Yellowtail (aka another tuna) with scallions. This is where perhaps the performance sinks below the perfunctory standards but I will always refer to TOKYO MANDARIN as perfunctory in the hopes that they will make Merriam's dictionary one day. For those of us who indulge in sushi and pay attention to standards of the art there are two essentials after of course freshness (You are after all eating raw food so it needs to be fresh!!!): exact cuts and perfection in the roll. TOKYO MANDARIN's sushi chef must have adopted a perfunctory (See definition at the top of this review or just say out loud TOKYO MANDARIN) approach to cutting the fish for my rolls. Perhaps he or was it the bland she who waited on me may have used a butter knife because the cuts were the exact opposite of precise and identical. Some pieces almost had a torn look to them .... if an Itamae was to spot a roll like these coming from a restaurant serving sushi I am sure he would scream to sue them for misusing the food name sushi. Perhaps he would scream out loud Ikagenna, which is Japanese for perfunctory. Sushi is to be an art not the mashing of raw fish to fit inside rice and seaweed. And as for number two ... at least half of my rolls were not sealed. They were falling open. When picked up in my chopsticks the interior consisting as noted of chopped fish and rice poured back onto my plate. When a chef does not prepare a food item to completeness what might one say about that chef? PERFUNCTORY of course or now as a reader of this you can say TOKYO MANDARIN! Now, there also were a few pieces of rice that appeared discolored in a way to indicate that they were either ancient relatives of the majority of my lunch's rice or they had at one time come in contact with some liquid on the chef's table and not properly disposed of but rather as a TOKYO MANDARIN or some might say PERFUNCTORY sushi chef they just shoved the discolored rice in with the white rice. So two stars not one. I feel a tinge of compassion due to the continued impact of COVID on restaurants. Will I go back???? Would you go back to a place that defines perfunctory? I didn't think so and neither will I. read more

4 stars for a South Jersey Chinese/Japanese food establishment. Now if it was in Chinatown in Philly it would be a 3 star. The had a small dinning room but since Covid they no longer offer any on-site dinning options. I'm not going to say they are rude because I think it's just a cultural difference. They definitely know their regular customers, they don't make ya feel all fuzzy and warm but they aren't rude or mean. They have a job, which is providing good food and they do that job well. If your looking for the type of Chinese establishment that serves the big greasy chicken wings and the underwhelming fried rice, your not going to get that here. In my experience the food is always fresh and still very hot by the time we get home. They have sushi which is fresh and tasty. If you don't like raw then ask for the Cindy Holiday roll, it's not on the menu, a friend told me about it. It's shrimp tempura roll with some flair! My kids are just getting the taste for Chinese so they stick to steamed dumplings and fried rice. Spicy tuna roll did not look or taste the way that it should. I am an avid sushi eater and normally go to many locations in the area, including the one located in Mullica Hill, but stopped by this one for a change. The rolls were poorly wrapped, but I decided to look past it initially...wrong choice. Supposed to be spicy tuna roll... which is usually a tightly wrapped orange color. Just look up pictures of spicy tuna roll on google and you'll find what you're supposed to eat. This looks like CAT FOOT STRAIGHT OUT OF A StarKist can. Absolutely disgusting and tasted wet and nasty. My cat wouldn't even eat this. All the of the other food did not make up for the horrible dish either. Threw everything away and wasted 40$. Now ended up doordashing Taco Bell instead. Hopefully we will get a meal decent enough for a human to eat. Do not go here. You will get sick. read more

Food is alright. Very classy looking food but still the same fast food as the other Asian themed restaurants. Personally we had them 3x and each time, both, or at least one of us, felt not so great that night. After the last time we decided no more. As much as I want to go back to change it up with ordering out food, I remember those nights and move on. People rave about it here though. Some people say it's the best in town. I'm not going to say it isn't good because that would be a lie. It was tasty, but not worth paying more for the same thing. Hopefully our nights after eating here were just a fluke. We had a takeout from this location a little while back maybe about a month ago the food was absolutely terrible. Not fresh not good not going back. They have another location in Mullica Hill. That's equally as bad but not as bad. But I won't go back to either one. read more

Went there last night for the first time with a friend of mine and we both got the prawns in white sauce over broccoli. The only thing missing was the diced cherries they advertise on the dish but overall the taste was very good and the broccoli was very fresh. Will definitely go again read more

King of the 10min call ahead. This place rocks! Super fast service priced more then fair. Sushi is mid grade but really good for the price. I recommend the general Tsos shrimp with upgraded to vegetable fried rice. Egg rolls I would give a 7/10. I stay with the very basics and have had good experiences for the most part. Ever since i have been working in the area we have tried a lot of different asian cusine. This by far of the ones we have gone with is better, Their house rice and miso salad is good, also had their Hunan chicken. That was good.. i had it with a little spice kicked into it. They also make sushi there, i tried the spicy salmon and tuna rolls, and a chef special they were making... i can't remember the name to save my life but it was good ..the wasabi they give you is good.. i like spicy things, add a little more kick to the meal . The dining area is small.. tables are close to each other.. not so much privacy , but for this being in a shopping area the places are small and they do make due. The staff is helpfull, the "sushi sensai" i like to call was helpful. Good stuff read more

This was a fantastic experience. The restaurant was clean, the staff super pleasant, and helpful. Immediately my party which included my sister and two children were served water, our orders - shrimp lo mein, pork fried rice, and beef and broccoli with egg rolls were taken. The waitress brought us some fried won ton noodles with a dipping sauce that were perfectly crunchy without being greasy. Our egg rolls came out super quick and again perfectly fried without greasy. When our dinner came the lo mein was yummy - the shrimp were big. The beef and broccoli were stunning - the broccoli wasn't mushy and the beef tender. The pork fried rice needed a bit of soy sauce but was also good. We were from out of town at a conference and it was nice to find such a find near by. I highly recommend it. read more

Tokyo Mandarin is an excellent restaurant that serves Japanese and Chinese cuisine. The sushi here is awesome. My wife and I particularly like the spicy tuna roll and the philadelphia roll. We have tried all of the rolls and every one of them was excellent, with the exception of the lobster roll. The specialty rolls can get a little expensive (around $12) but are well worth it. The standard rolls are reasonably priced at around $5 and are also out of this world. The fish is always fresh. The seafood udon is another great option from the Japanese menu. It is loaded with scallops and shrimp and udon noodles. You have two choices of how to order the udon. I have had both and I recommend ordering it as a soup. It comes in a HUGE bowl and is a ton of food. Well worth the price. The portion seems a little smaller when ordering this for takeout, so you should try and get this one in the restaurant. General Tso's chicken is my favorite item from the Chinese menu. I have ordered this dish from many different restaurants and this one ranks up there near the top. Other dishes I recommend are the dynamite roll, the godzilla roll, the seaweed salad and the shrimp lo mein. The shrimp lo mein is really good. The dining area is very small (maximum occupancy is 26 chairs) consisting of several tables and a sushi bar that seats about 4 people. This place is always full during lunch and dinner, so you should make reservations. I have only sat in the dining area a few times but found the service to be attentive and courteous. Take-out times average around 15 minutes. They do not deliver. I have never visited any of the other locations besides Swedesboro but would expect to find the same quality at all of their locations. Some of their locations even have a sushi buffet one night a week, but sadly the Swedesboro location is not one of them. I highly recommend this restaurant! read more

I am a HUGE Tokyo Mandarin fan. I used to go all the time when I was in college because I was always over at my best friend's house and she lives five minutes away, but I unfortunately haven't been there lately because I now have a 9-5 and am usually not in her area on weekends. I sure do miss it! Most dishes at Tokyo Mandarin are Chinese or Japanese, with a few Thai options thrown in for good measure. Every dish my friend, her parents, and I have tried gets a positive rating because each is well-above average. There are plenty of dishes to choose from. We always leave the restaurant feeling deeply satisfied. The only semi-negative thing about Tokyo Mandarin in Swedesboro is that the dining area is tiny. The dining area at Tokyo Mandarin in Glassboro is double the size of the one in Swedesboro. If you are coming to the restaraunt in Swedesboro to dine on a Friday or Saturday night, be prepared to wait. (I do not know if they take reservations. You're better off doing take-out on a weekend night if all you are interested in is Asian food and not a dining experience.) There are maybe ten tables, and the quarters can be cramped. If you and your dinner date are planning on having a top secret discussion over a meal, don't do it here - if the restaurant is busy, your neighbors will be almost on top of you and be able to hear everything if they want. Also, there isn't a bar, but it is BYOB. With that said, I am still giving Tokyo Mandarin five stars for two reasons . First, you can't beat their lunch specials. You can get a generously portioned Bento Box (among other things) with soup and salad for under $10. Secondly, I have NEVER, and I mean NEVER had Pad Thai that comes anywhere near the deliciousness level of Tokyo Mandarin's. Pad Thai is one of my all-time favorite dishes. Their spicy chicken Pad Thai is absolutely to die for. If you are a Pad Thai fan and haven't tried Tokyo Mandarin's, you have absolutely no idea what you are missing! read more

I went with the General Tsos chicken with Pork Fried Rice Lunch special and ordered Pan Fried Dumplings as an appetizer, everything was excellent. If I had to complain about something, maybe it would be that the rice serving wasn't that big, to me. Also, they didn't ask me if I wanted anything else to drink, other than giving us water...which isn't a big deal anyway, because that's all I wanted(haha). Terrific place to sit down for a nice sushi lunch or dinner. I went with a close friend and some of her friends when visiting. I got the 3 rolls and tea for less than twenty dollars, an absolute steal in my mind. It was an excellent meal through and through. My friend got the sashimi and the others got more stir fry items. Cannot argue with any of the flavors. I enjoyed the fact that they refilled my teapot several times as well as provide plenty of wontons and fresh duck sauce. Very disappointed in the my takeout experience today. Picked up food and when I got home noticed that they missed two items. When I called them back, the counterperson's initial reaction was accusatory and he said he did put them in the bag. I told him to ask the sushi guy and he came back on the phone and said that he couldn't credit me the missing item unless I came back to the restaurant. My waitress constantly rolled her eyes, not only at me but the people next to me as well. I can now understand why it's always empty when I come in here. They do "all you can eat" sushi on Sunday night. It's awesome. Maybe some people can't eat a ton of sushi but my husband can. This is an excellent value for us. The experience has always been consistently good- both the food and the service. We usually have the same waitress. Last time we were there there was an annoying couple in the booth next to us, but that is hardly the restaurant's fault. PS: Love the Rainbow Roll. read more
