This place was kind of shitty and I'll tell you why... Actually, let's start with the good since there are two stars. The ambiance is all right it's not too bright, the bar looks cool, the place is huge with plenty of seating. Even though it was busy we still did not have a wait. The waitress we had when we first sat down had this whiny tone and meowed at us like a kitty. She pressed us to drink (which I couldn't because I look 18 and left my entire wallet at home) and then left. Myself and my dining compadre both had cokes. Which cost $3.50. I ordered the Hibachi entree with the Sirloin steak. This included a salad, soup, and veggies with steak, a shrimp appetizer, and fried rice. It was about $20. The soup came out first (from that same angry kitty waitress) and I could tell it was the onion as opposed to miso variety. It didn't have much flavor and tasted a bit oily. But I don't go out to dinner until I am starving so needless to say I nom'd the soup like a happy piglet. Next came the salad which was completely drenched in dressing and contained one gratuitous tomato. It was ginger salad dressing soup. Blergh. Then came our meal. The shrimp appetizer was probably three pieces of shrimp cut into three pieces served to us without much fanfare. We were not introduced to the three sauces in front of us. I am an adventurous eater so I dove in but I couldn't help but notice the nervous couple to our right on a first date looking bewildered at the sauce. It would have been nice if someone had provided them with a little better service. The rice was cooked first and had little flavor, the only addition was soy sauce and a little bit of egg, a couple peas and undercooked carrots. If i pay $20 for hibachi dinner I want to be able to take some home, and in this respect they really fell short. Also, you were so hungry that you ate all your rice by the time your meat came. The veggies were mostly broccoli and sprouts. Everything was a bit oily and lacking flavor. Our waiter was about as charming as a toad, much like his kitty co-worker. She also suggested I stop getting rounds of soda. She said, "You are all done with soda right? You should switch to water now?" As I said, I can be kind of a fatty but c'mon I will drink as much soda as i please (three glasses). I just think in terms of hibachi, there is way better food and happier staff to be found. read more

We sit down and cool our heels for a waitress that takes her time getting our drink order then disappears for 10 minutes, reappearing with our drinks eventually. She disappears again for a bit before returning to take our order. Ok, a little slow but not awful....good lord...then comes the food deluge. Appetizers appear, followed in seconds by soup and salad followed literally in a few seconds by the table side chef. Let's see how fast we can get these folks in and out. Time out buddy! So the chef goes away while we begin to eat. 10 minutes later he is back not to be denied his time cooking. What an experience, jam the food down as they keep throwing it at you despite requests to slow down. Food is OK but not great. The only saving grace is they made a surprisingly good martini. Having been to similar restaurants in the Midwest and on the west coast I had some expectations which this place did not even come close to meeting. read more

I've been going here for years, mostly due to decent tasting food and proximity to my friend's condo. I've never had a bad experience here, but I do find it to be a bit overpriced for what it is. The drinks are mediocre, sushi is fairly good, and while the hibachi is a fun show, I also find the food to be overly greasy (which doesn't sit well in my stomach). My only real complaints are the following: I realize they need to fill tables, but WHY do they insist on putting a group of rowdy 30-somethings at a table filled with small children? I've had to apologize to parents on more than one occasion, and I'm fairly cognizant of what I'm saying around kids. Also, the service can vary. Some days we get excellent servers, other days, not so much. It has seemed rushed and like they don't want you to enjoy a meal. On my last trip, four of us split the bill in half with one card and cash, and for whatever reason the entire amount of the bill was double-charged on the card, as well as the adjusted amount (which was eventually fixed). Apparently the server thought we were leaving over $90 in tip. Good thing we check our bank statements like a hawk. read more

Yup. That's my photo. I've been to this place about 5 or 6 times since they opened up. I love Hibachi style cooking so I was really excited when they opened one up in my area. It's not the kind of place for intimate dining, but it's great for birthday dinners or getting a group together. The more people at the table, the better. The prices are good, the waitstaff are attentive (even close to closing), the wait for a table isn't too long and they take reservations. I love that they have a full bar and the bar comes with TV's in case you're watching the BoSox in the playoffs like I was in the fall when I had a b-day obligation to attend. But the best part is this: THE WATER ACTUALLY TASTES GOOD!! That is so rare in a restaurant and it is much appreciated. read more

Very good restaurant. Came there with my "family" for my father. Food was great. Sirloin steak wasn't jampacked with flavor but was nevertheless amazing. Portions were fairly large. Though a group of people joined halfway in and ordered with us. They were unclear with how the food worked and when they ordered 2 orders and they said that they were sharing. The chef brought the food and served the food to the two plates for the two orders he was given. This was supposed to be shared though the group misunderstood and thought more food was coming. The women flipped out and began to berate the chef who was just doing his job. She demanded to talk to the waiter. Eventually they got out of the restaurant with 3 orders of food for the price of 2 orders. My compatriot told me later on that the waiter or chef will most likely have to pay for their order out of pocket. The staff have to deal with these people and had done so with elegance which is what truly gave them 5 stars though their food greatly helped. read more

TLDR - The food was excellent, the service was terrible. We arrived just before 7:00 and we were promptly seated at an empty hibachi table. After ten minutes another couple was seated with us. Waited another 10 minutes and the final couple was seated. The waitress didn't arrive for another ten minutes. For those counting, it was 30 minutes before we could even order drinks. I ordered the Sushi sampler. The waitress asked me to repeat my order. I said again, yes the sushi sampler please. Ordered the Shrimp and Chicken for the entree. After everyone ordered, it took 10 more minutes for the drinks to arrive. My sushi didn't come out but another couple's did. I waved the waitress over and asked about the Sushi. She apologized and said she would go get it. She came back with Sashimi, not sushi. At this point I was too hungry to send it back, so i ate it. It was the only flavorless portion of the dinner. 10 more minutes and the Salads arrived. So its now been 50 minutes and the chef finally arrives with the entree cart. He reads off the orders and pointed to me and said "chicken and steak". I said No, Chicken and Shrimp. This took another 5 minutes to correct. The rest of the meal was quick and delicious. Too bad it took so long to get started and too bad the orders were screwed up. Probably will not go back to this particular spot. read more

My friend Jacqui introduced me to this place and I am shocked the reviews are not higher! This review is based on the food at the bar not served table side because I have not eaten in the formal dining room. Let me first say that Tommy and Ben the bartenders are A M A Z I N G! Best Mai Tai's I have had ever! They beat every place I have had them including the Hong Kong. Two of these potent drinks and it is like you have had four no joke! As far as food goes my friend orders the sushi and she has always said that she has enjoyed everything she has had. I have had the Mikado special which is chicken and steak and both were cooked perfectly. I have also had the house fried rice with chicken, beef & shrimp this can serve as a meal in itself. For an appetizer the lobster puff is always a winner. I have never been disappointed in anything about this restaurant except maybe the reviews on yelp. Friday night date review (April 2010) Atmosphere: very casual but comfortable. Seating: we ate at the sushi bar - the dining room was PACKED and there were kids everywhere. (eek) Food: Sushi - tasted fresh and delicious! Chicken fried rice - large portion and super tastey. Menu: Unique wide variety of sushi - specials available. Decidedly mediocre. We did hibachi (steak/chicken/lobster). I'll admit that the portion sizes are generous (they should be for their prices!) and the food looked fresh. However, the food tasted quite bland and the restaurant was a sauna. I've been to many a hibachi place, and they seem to do a much better job with temperature calibration. If you're dining in, know that the service is poor and slow, the food is strangely timed if not everyone orders hibachi, and the place is definitely set up in a strange way (one giant open room). The fact that we're all in the same room makes it more obvious when you're waiting a while for your food, and watching everyone else. I usually get take-out from here rather than dining in the dining room. The bar appears nice though, from the outside. Pros: The portions are quite large if you do hibachi, and I do absolutely love some of their sushi rolls (like the banana roll, amazing!). They also give out Andes mints, which I always look forward to. I would recommend this place for a fun family dinner (seems full of kids), but otherwise I'd get takeout and skip the in-restaurant experience. read more

The terrible service here has given me the incentive to start my new Yelp account. My wife and I had just been served hibachi which was very disappointing. The cook burnt the eggs initially then placed hot sprouts on top of our 3yr old's fried ice cream. The servers where impatient. We where asked if we wanted a booster seat, we said yes, and we didn't get one. Our order was wrong, which was corrected when the cook arrived, and that was the last we seen of our server until the check came. In the end we've decided not to go back. Usually come here once a month since it is expensive, amazing food but horrible service, this one guy we get almost every time is so bad, he comes one to two times too our table and bad. But there is one girl that is fast and good and nice. don't bring someone who is allergic to seafood or anything like that, almost every time someone gets shrimp or something that was in the sea. The first time I ate here, it was New Years Eve last year. The place was busy, the cooks were entertaining and the food was delicious! We recently went to celebrate my husband's birthday and it will probably be the last time we visit. The cook was boring and did not engage us at all. I've been to hibachi restaurants a million times. The whole point/fun of it is to interact with the cooks and have a good time. Our cook clearly didn't want to be there. I'm almost certain he didn't say two words to us. The food was good but not good enough to keep us coming back! Perhaps we will get take out in the future instead of spending extra money in house on drinks. Also, their bathroom (ladies room) is disgusting. I felt like I needed a shower after a quick visit before leaving the restaurant. In the madness of Black Friday, this was a nice quiet place to sit and have a good Thanksgiving-counterprogramming lunch of Japanese food. It's a big, dark space that, at lunch time, makes you feel like a real slacker that's ignoring things you should be doing instead. i liked that. They also make nice mixed drinks that got my sisters-in-law nicely toasted so that my mother-in-law had to drive their car badly and there was drama. But you're really there for the in-your-face hibachi grilling, which was predictably enjoyable. The friendly chef played all the hits, the onion volcano, the fire, the cheery banter in just-a-little English. And the food was good, too; i enjoyed the heck out of my soba noodles, and the wife's steak was pretty good too. It's a decent value; you're not stuffed, but certainly sated for around $10. Living 1 mile away from Tokyo is soooo dangerous. We have not dined at the Japanese grills (and judging from the noise and mayhem of the room), probably will not dine in there. However, the sushi cannot be beat. We've only had one issue with the unagi tasting a little funny, and that is in our weekly (if not biweekly) trips to eat here since we moved to the area a year ago. I kind of judge sushi places based on how good their tuna is - and I am never disappointed here. Tuna is always red and rare, perfect texture, and just the right amount. Size of rolls and sashimi is good for the price. The sushi chefs are really top notch. Also, the dining area in front of the sushi bar is rarely packed or loud. It's safe to say we always walk out of here happy and looking forward to our next visit. Headed there tonight and my mouth is already watering! read more

I'm from out of town, and visited for work over the weekend. My boss and a few other coworkers were in the mood for hibachi and this seemed like a good place. It was different than any other hibachi restaurant than I've ever been to. The majority of the restaurant is made up of hibachi tables. We sat down and were immediately greeted by a nice waitress. I ordered a blue Hawaii, which was amazing and my other coworkers ordered a scorpion bowl. We all orders something different ( I ordered the teriyaki chicken) and between the four of us two ordered the garlic noodles and the other two ordered the fried rice and we were going to share. The hibachi chef was very good, but as other reviews said, they don't do typical hibachi chef things like squirting Saki in your mouth and tossing veggies to catch in your mouth. I didn't mind this because the food was delicious! The garlic noodles were to die for!!! I almost wish I ordered it for myself! My parents are visiting me and dad has never been to a Teppanyaki place before so I figured I would take them to one last night. I have been to Tokyo Steakhouse in NH multiple times, I didnt realize they had a branch in MA (which is a lot closer to me). So I figured I would give it a try. First impression, wasnt that great definetly not a place to take visitors to impress. More on the ambiance later as probably most of you want to hear about the food :-). Soup, was mediocre at best, I love the onion soup that comes with hibatchi but I didnt finish it here. Same goes for the salad with ginger dressing. It was horrible :-( and couldn't finish it. We ordered 4 dishes that had combination of, Fillet Mignon, Shrimp, Lobster, Scallops and Sword fish. Protein was good (hard to mess up these ingredients) other than Scallops which were waaaay under cooked ( I know my scallops :-) ) Unfortunately same goes for the vegies they were way under cooked, I dont like them fully cooked but still. Later I realized we were the last table and chef was rushing thru cooking, barely did any acrobatics with the food ( that sounds funny ). Tempura ice cream was a disaster, mushy outside barely warm. Overall I would not recommend anyone to go to this place. Instead try the branch in Daniel Webster Hwy in NH or Bisuteki on Memorial Drive, Cambridge MA. I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because there were able to cook the rest of the proteins properly. Ambiance: This place is a lot bigger then any other Teppanyaki place I have been around New England, which gives a chicken hen look. There is no decoration in this giant place, just rows and rows of hibatchies. None of the tables were cleared there were 4 tables with customers and 12-16 table with left over plates on them. My coworkers & I decided to try hibachi at Tokyo Steakhouse on a Friday night. We made a reservation for 630 and got sat pretty quickly. The feel of the restaurant is nice. They're really big, and we're really busy. I love trying different hibachi places. My only complaint was that the cook wasn't very energetic, he didn't talk at all. He just cooked and smiled a little bit. His whole section was full too, you would think he would've been putting on a show. The food and drinks it self was very good, can't complain. If you're looking for a hibachi place and you're nearby it is ideal to visit Tokyo. read more

Neat clean n open environment with a lot of hibachi tables. Service was prompt n friendly. Chef was hospitable n great with kids since we were celebrating my 9 yr old nephew. Food was fresh n delicious. If u get stuck at a hibachi table n the other guests aren't your cup of tea it's not like u can move easily but u make the best of it. Only bummer was is we were looking forward to my nephew to try his first fried ice cream n they were out. How could that be when they only have 2 desserts on the menu oh well. Where do I start with this place. A friend invited me out for dinner here. She talked it up quite a bit. At first glance the place was pretty good, but very packed. When I looked at the menu I cringed at the average $18 dollar price for an entree. Everything else is also up to par with that price. The food was decent. To save money I got a side of teriyaki chicken and the A la Carte smoked sake (salmon) sushi. For five bucks I only got two measly pieces. It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen! The chicken was dry but ok in quantity. The thing that I did like about this place was the extra stuff you didn't know you ordered. Despite the fact I did not get an entree the server gave me Miso soup with salad and fried rice (with egg. It was AMAZING!) The thing I did not like about it was the inconsistency. The server gave me Miso and Salad and Fried rice, but the person I was with only got the soup, I had to split my rice with him (and he even ordered an Entree! The shrimp was small in portion and only given to the other party. They graciously split some of it with us. The cook was smoking something nice, I tell you. The whole meal took about 2:30 hours and we were not even eating slow. The service was pretty bad. The server took 3 requests over the course of an hour just to get a refill of water, and then he gave us four glasses, despite the fact we only wanted two. We had either no water, or a surplus. Again with the inconsistency. The total for five people was about $120. The price per person was about $24. The price was A-OK but not quite what I wanted for such a small and just adequate meal with poor service. Would I recommend to friends?: No. Would I go back?: No. Recommend?: The fried rice. I Have eaten and done take out here a bunch of times decided to get take out tonight so we can support local restaurants.. Worst thing i could of done. My husband nd i got the kobe suft and turf. I only ate a little bit because the steak was so hard i could even chew it and the lobster was so over cooked and salty, my husband didnt even touch his because he got turned off by the piece of chewy nasty lobster he saw.. the rice was ice cold and had no flavor to it.. never going there again read more

I live close to Tokyo and go perhaps 6 times a year. The service is good. The chefs vary in their quality of entertainment, but I would say they range from good to great. Portions are large -- I usually share with another person. If you like fish, I suggest to Monk fish. I have tried the cuttlefish and it was a bit too rubbery and tasteless. Kids enjoy the Chef's show including flames and banter. Service can sometimes be slow - you may have to flag down your waitress to get your bill in a reasonable amount of time. read more

I recently went here on a date. Needless to say, it was one of the worst dining experiences I have encountered. We ordered sushi, which had a strong old fish smell (should have been a red-flag). Shortly after the meal, it became quickly apparent that I had food poisoning with excessive vomiting and sickness. Went to celebrate my brother's 40th birthday. We were all able to have our own table. The waitress ?? Questionable since we rarely saw her and she failed to do an appropriate job. She took our drink order and after a long absence brought them, but 1 was wrong and the other was suppose to be sprite, but was just soda water. She made the corrections and took our food order. After that we never saw her, she left dirty dishes, empty glasses and never asked if everything was alright. Must have been the worst service I ever experienced. read more

The sushi and Hibachi are always tasty. I've order many times for take out as they don't deliver to my house, (they are a bit far to deliver at my place anyway). They are also very considerate and make sure they separate hot foods from sushi. Thankfully! Sushi isn't mean to be hot! If there was one thing to complain, I'd have to say that ordering on the phone has been a bit frustrating at times as they've made a couple of mistakes. One time, they put wasabi on the same Sushi tray, even after I repeatedly say not to. I'm allergic to wasabi so I couldn't eat my sushi. This wasn't a problem for my boyfriend since he got to eat double sushi but, I didn't find it as amusing... Another time, they gave us the wrong order, with Wasabi... Now, if it weren't for the fact that their mistake attempts with my well being (freaking allergies), I'd give this place 5 stars. But, since I love their food and they make up for the delicious meals I've had there, I'll give them four stars! read more

This is the third & newest location for the Tokyo Steakhouse. This location use to be a Ground Round. I never had the pleasure of dining there. I can tell you it had been closed for quite some time & it seemed like it took forever for the renovations to be completed & for Tokyo to open. Tried this place for an early dinner (6:00 pm on a Saturday). Big mistake. There were more kids here than a Chucky Cheese. Very loud. The decor is average. It was clean enough, but then it should be it hasn't been open very long. Service was very good, drinks solid, food was fresh & high quality. Soup & salad just average, maki rolls tasty & a huge selection,. Entrée's good. Teppanyaki Shrimp & the Teppan Teriyaki Chicken were cooked perfectly and the portions very large. Try going during the week or after the kids clear out. I fear the parents are bringing them for the show. read more

Ate there with a party of 12 with reservations on a Wednesday night. We were seated next to our party but at a different hibachi station. Ok I understand only so many people fit, but I assumed due to size of party they would be cooking at both stations. Turns out they sat another party of 6 next to us and that hibachi cooked only their meal. The soup and tea were cold and waitress never checked in on us. The chef burnt the shrimp and overcooked the chicken. When serving the shared foods, veggies and rice etc, he always served the same people first. By the time he got to the end of our party where we were sitting, there was nothing left but the scraps. We had hardly anything on our plates while the first 9 people ate quite well. Poorly executed! Also why is the Tokyo steakhouse in Andover almost 35% more $ than the Tokyo steakhouse in Salem nh! Will not return. Very expensive for what you get. Will stay local and eat at the smaller hibachi places near me for less$. My 3 stars is quite generous. read more
