We stopped here this morning on our way home from a trip to Lexington. I had bacon, eggs, hash browns and a biscuit, my partner had pancakes and sausage. My biggest issue was my hash browns were not as crispy as I had asked for, but the service was good and the most important thing is it wasn't Lexington Diner. (Have a great story about how they accused me of working there once and that's why I gave them a bad review. In reality, it was horrible service and cold food.) Parenthetical expression aside, the breakfast was tasty and I do want to go back for a burger next time we're in town visiting West Sixth Brewery. I placed an online order, I got a couple of hot mess sandwiches, and four milkshakes. When I arrived the lady informed me that the milkshake machine was broken and she could not fulfill the four that I had ordered. I asked her could she take them off of my online order or if she couldn't could I please have a refund, she said there was no way to refund me but she would take my name down and when the machine was back up and working they would replace those. I said I really don't come here that often but if that's all you can do that is fine. About a week and a half later we all said that sounded pretty good, so I went to get the four milkshakes. The machine was working but I was told my name wasn't down for anything, I then explained what had happened and was told there's nothing they can do I would have to pay for the milkshakes. I've sent a few emails and have tried leaving my number for a manager to contact me to get refunded or these replaced and I've gotten no answer. It is an iconic burger joint near the campus. They have great food. Must warn you though you should bring your appetite. The fries are big orders and the burgers are even bigger. So prepare yourself. This location compared to the other in my opinion is better and easier to get in and out. Not a fan of things near campus unless you are walking. read more

Second time I've been here. Since the move the food and atmosphere are still great and we enjoy the experience. I have always loved Tolly Ho and recommended them until my experience on April 14, 2022. It was a typical Thursday evening. Tolly Ho's line was a bit long but not unusual. It was about 9:32pm when I entered the restaurant. I had a taste for Tolly Ho so I did not mind waiting. I ordered my food a Super Ho and fries to go. I paid and then waited.... and waited and waited. Nearly an hour passed but because it was a lot of orders ahead of me I made no big fuss. However I did have an issue with the fact that no one cooking on the line had hair nets or gloves on. They were touching food and it did not look sanitary. The woman working the window was also cleaning, sweeping and serving food. At one time she swept food up, went to the back (I hope to wash her hands) and came back shortly to serve food. She took an order, handled money with her hands and then touched food. She was grabbing drinks, cupping the drinks over the lid and also grabbing fries that were open at the top and placing them into bags. Her hand was going into the fry containers from the way she was holding the food. She at one point coughed, yes in the bend of her elbow but, near open food. She did not step away. AFTER SEEING ALL THIS I WAS SURE I DID NOT WANT MY FOOD. I noticed that others who came in much later than me were getting their food. I walked up to the counter to question about my order. Turns out they forgot to start cooking my food. I asked the staff to tell the woman not to grab food like that, then I told them to just give me a refund as I would not be eating there. I give them 2 stars ONLY because they refunded my money with an apology for my long wait of nearly 2 hours! I WILL not be eating there anymore!!! SO UNSANITARY! read more

Tolly-Ho is an above average place where I would really only go for breakfast. It's setup sort of like a fast food restaurant by that you order at the counter then go and find a seat. The food is pretty good, but I've had some issues in the past with the wait and the restaurant not being that busy. If the food was grand it wouldn't have been an issue. We wanted a fairly quick, easy, and burger type stop and this was it. Our family of six was on vacation for the week from Wisconsin and we certainly couldn't feed our four teenage boys on snacks all day. Pretty easy to get too and just what we were looking for. This is definitely not a healthy place to go but if you are looking for something at a local hang out then this is it! Okay, I get why people like this place...it's very reminiscent of every college hangover joint that I ever visited. And were I a drunk college kid, I would have given it a much higher rating, I'm sure. However, as a 40-something professional (who may no longer be allowed to work at UK after this review), I find Tolly-Ho to be sub-par. I visited for lunch on a Tuesday with a group of friends. You place your order at a counter with staff members who just do not understand people who are not familiar with the Tolly-Ho process (and were rather rude about me asking). Then, they make your meal and call your name for you to come back to the counter and pick up *and pay for* your meal. Why you don't pay when you order, I'm not sure. Then, you have to pick up your silverware and condiments at a station that no one told me about. Also, if you don't hear them practically whisper your name when your food is ready, too bad. It's really a flawed system in my opinion. The food is pretty standard diner food. I got a mushroom omelet with extra cheese and hash browns. It was decent food (though I wouldn't call it great), and breakfast is served all day, which is nice. It was rather pricey for what it is, as the omelet, hash browns and drink cost me $12.50. The atmosphere feels like the place hasn't been renovated in thirty years, which I'm sure is part of its charm to some people (who came here many years ago). There are a few video games and pinball tables (which my pinball loving boyfriend says that they don't take care of). They also weirdly sell some smoking items in the back corner. I get that it's a nostalgic place for some people, (I have weird little diners that I loved during my drunk college days, too) but if you aren't a UK alum that's been going here forever, this may not be the place for you. read more

I want to love this place but it's hard when you wait 35 minutes for a freaking breakfast sandwich. Don't get me wrong I'm a very patient person however the wait has to be justified. If I'm going to wait 35 minutes for breakfast it better be something that I can't make better at home. I'm disappointed because I passed several other breakfast restaurants to come here. I even ignored the do not enter sign in the rear of the parking to avoid the stop light. The one positive is the menu has a million options available all day. This place is a huge draw for the college folks. The food is just okay and they are open 24hrs a day which I guess is cool if your drunk and hungry and near campus at 3 am of which you can see just about anything or anyone here but they will nickel and dime you to death here. There are no refills on your drink unless you are drinking water. They charge for every sauce ect that you ask for and the food is at a premium here for the most part. The lady taking your payment has the personality of a tack. The portions seem to be good and the mostly greasy spoon food is tasty but the lack of refills, the up-charge on every single item and the general attitude here and the occasional upset stomach ruin it for me. read more

Well, today is your lucky day because you, sir or madam, get a 2-for-1 review special! Review #1 comes from an inebriated 20-something craving 3 a.m. plates of fried food after one-too-many bourbons. Review #2 comes 24-hours after the first, when the same 20-something, this time much more sober, accompanied his friends on their quest for late-night chow. As you may have guessed, the mysterious 20-something is me, and this review is fresh off a long weekend in Lexington. I still have the shame and extended waistline to prove it. Review #1: Oh glorious food! Burgers, breakfast, and fried anything! I have to get the cheddar tots, and let's see, what else? The Hoosier in me (yeah, that's right) wants a piece of home, so I'm going with the pork tenderloin! Upon receiving food: Is there anything better in the world than a cheddar tot?? What's wrong with my pork tenderloin? Who bought the bucket of beer?!? Nevermind, I'll just fix the pork with tons of mustard. All gone. Review #2: I fully knew what I was getting myself in to. I may have been intoxicated, but it's hard to forget such an atrocious piece of pork. I was expecting a friend hunk of delicious pork and instead received a thin, boiled slab of meat that looked as if it had been run over by the tool used to aerate a lawn. That terrifying feeling you get the morning after a drunken night of mistakes, you know, the "what have I done" feeling.. yeah, that's the first feeling I had the following morning. Why would I eat such a thing? I semi-reluctantly followed some friends here again the following night in hopes of redeeming myself with something at least slightly more appetizing. I was craving something from the breakfast side of the menu, so I ordered the Hot Mess, and as if that wasn't enough, a side of onion rings. My inexperience Tolly-Hoing was greeted with a massive breakfast sandwich of eggs, sausage, bacon and hash browns. Oh, and an entire separate plate of golden onion rings. Why didn't I order this when the boozy haze provided that false feeling of starvation? While I couldn't eat everything, I enjoyed what I had. The sandwich was nothing spectacular, but the onion rings were perfect. This dual-experience of Tolly-Ho leaves me giving it 3 stars. Not terrible, but not fantastic, either. Lessons learned? -Better enjoyed with booze in the system. -Stick to the fried sides, like cheddar tots and onion rings. -If you're there with a first-timer, feel free to inform the person taking their order, and watch the obnoxious attempt at embarrassment unfold when they get their food. -Don't let your friends convince you that consecutive nights here is a good idea, especially three. -At all costs, avoid the pork tenderloin. read more

Everyone I talked to said that while in town, this was the ONE place I had to try. After a long day, I ended up here around 11pm. Upon recommendation, I had the Tolly Ho burger and chili cheese fries. There was a group of 15 ahead of me, so I had a bit of a wait, but it was totally worth it. The chili cheese fries were definitely the star of the show. I mean, I've never met a crinkle fry I didn't enjoy. Smother them in gobs of homemade chili and melted cheese and I'll show you a happy girl. I can't imagine any human actually consuming the entire serving of fries though. It was HUGE. Then again, give me a few cocktails and I may prove myself wrong. The burger was also delicious. The only downside to the entire meal was how I felt about myself afterwards. Even typing the review, I remember how much food I consumed at that meal and it's a mix of reliving how delicious it was...and fear that I clogged my arteries forever. read more

This is a staple restaurant in Lexington. I've been coming here for years even when it was at the old location closer to campus. My most recent trip made me feel obligated to leave a review. The slowest service I've ever had. The cashier was on another planet, the cook was yelling back at the window girl, it was just chaos and all on a casual Monday morning right before Christmas. After waiting 30 minutes to get our food my grandpa when to the counter to ask what the hold up was they apologized and said it would be ready shortly. They called my name (erin) for the order and we paid but looked at the food on the tray and it wasn't ours..... the meant to call for the order before us (Aaron). Sure simple mistake on the names but there were only 4 other people in there? If the cashier came back down to earth she would've noticed. A longtime tradition in Lexington, especially at the University of Kentucky. If you got a degree at UK and didn't go to Tolly Ho along the way, something just isn't right. It's right next to campus, open 24/7, and provides pretty dang good diner-type food and beer. It's a greasy spoon dive, and it's proud of it and very good at being one. The food isn't high cuisine, but it's way better than you'll get at a fast food place. For comfort-food burgers, fries, shakes and breakfast food (served all day), it's the best place in the central Lexington area by far. The "campus hangout" feel is helped by the big bulletin board by the entrance of various campus events and musical acts playing in local bars, and the shelf of various newsletters and free newspapers for the taking. When the bars hit closing time downtown, you know this is where everybody is going to go. You can meet almost anyone there, and almost anyone blends in. Bikers and the homeless, sorority girls and fraternity boys, studious graduate students, police and firefighters, lawyers and doctors, and wide-eyed freshmen all come to Tolly Ho. You can't be too overdressed, and short of indecent exposure you can't be underdressed. The back room has a small video arcade: a handful of arcade machines on a somewhat rotating basis. Usually some fighting games and shooting games, sometimes a driving game, and an ancient Donkey Kong machine. There is also a couple of pinball machines and touchscreen games. These are nice while waiting for your food, or if you're killing time waiting for your next class. Although I graduated from the University of Kentucky years ago, I still get cravings for a Tolly Ho Burger with pepper cheese, a side of onion rings and a chocolate shake and go there occasionally. Unlike a lot of things you remember liking and go back and try again and find your memory has made things better over time, instead Tolly Ho is just as good as I remember and just as good as the first time I went there in the Spring of '98.
