Small Greek Salad at the Athenian Cafe
    Chuck C.

We stopped by for lunch today and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I selected the Gyro special as it includes French Fries and a drink. My wife ordered a Small Greek Salad. We thoroughly enjoyed both selections and each was excellent. I was just able to finish my meal and my wife asked for a box to take home about half of her lunch. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We will be coming again soon. If you are interested in good Greek food you need to try this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

Another update: Well another year of fantastic food and good service at the Athenian Cafe since I last posted a review. I can't get enough of their lamb gyros. Their tzatziki sauce is awesome. I wish they would package it and sell it. It has to be the best I've tasted. They are still 5 star and now they are serving wine and beer. Had dinner there with a group of friends this weekend and we had a wonderful evening. Looking forward to going back again soon.

In case the name didn't give it away this is a place serving primarily greek cuisine. It does have various american food options with a kids menu. The location is just north of Pleasant Valley Blvd and near the Frankstown exit. We've bypassed it for years and finally gave it a try. It's a quaint little mom and pop style restaurant. Go for the food and not the ambiance. There's parking around the restaurant and direct access off of Union Ave. This place is a true hidden gem and the real star is their food and service. They are both unbelievable and reasonably priced. Most dishes here go for $10-$15. The wait staff is always on top of everything and helpful. I would consider it a great family stop. My go to is the gyro platter (comes with a salad and fries). We've also tried various salads and other dishes and everything is fresh and tasty. It's by far my favorite gyro loaded with lamb/beef, tzatziki, lettuce, onion and tomatoes. You can choose a gyro with chicken, steak or falafel as well. Writing this is making me want to return.

Food- 10/10 Please try this place out. The food is great and was definitely made fresh. It came out hot and it smelled soooooo good. The pita was pillowy soft and had been lightly griddled which made it even better. Not shown is the Spanakopita and it was so good that we ate it before even realizing that we should have taken a photo. Definitely order that. I ordered the Mousakka which did have a lot more nutmeg than I'm used to but it was still wonderfully yummy. My cousin had the gyro and she said it was really good. The salad was nice to although I will say it was heavy on the vinegar dressing. Service- 10/10 The lady who took our order was really nice and attentive. Ambiance- 8/10 It's in an older building and you can tell the space is old but it also kinda homey. It's simple, no frills. I look forward to going back when I'm up that way again.

Best Gyro in town. Great service and excellent food, not just the Gyro. The ambiance is nice and welcoming for both family and date night.

The chicken gyro is amazing. Their tzatziki is some of the best (if not THE best) I've ever had.

The food was fabulous, fantastic and huge! I never saw a gyro so big. It could feed 4 people…read moreeasily. This was a delivery. The gyro salad was huge as well. We ordered stuffed grape leaves and a spinach/feta cheese in pastry. We were so full after attempting to eat our gyros that we had to put them in the fridge without opening them. We will order or go in person to this restaurant often. Try it you will love it.

I've been looking for good Greek food since I came back from my honeymoon, and this is the place!…read more Everything on their menu is flavorful & authentic. The people working here are super friendly & helpful. They made a mistake with one of my orders (forgot the tzatziki on the side & no cucumbers), and they completely made a new one and allowed me to keep the extra! The restaurant is quite small; although, there are some seat by the window. Nevertheless, this spot is perfect for quick takeout, and I love that it's local! Here's what I've tried: [Chicken Gryo]: Flavorful & stuffed full. This can be super messy so ask for the tzatziki on the side. I love that they put fries on their gyros. That's what I saw in Santorini. [Hummus]: Both hummus that I have tried has been super flavorful & authentic. The classic garlic hummus is out of this world, and I really loved the spiciness & mix of feta in the Spicy Hummus. Pro Tip: order extra pita with the hummus. There's not enough! [Baklava Cheesecake]: Although this isn't exactly authentic, it was delicious. I love baklava, and I love cheesecake. This was a winning combination for me. A flaky top with a creamy inside allowed for the perfect dessert! [Rice Pudding]: I didn't take a picture of this dessert, but it was delicious nonetheless. It's creamy and vanilla-y (Is that a word?!?), and the cinnamon on top pairs perfectly for a more than flavorful dessert. They always have a special of 2 for $6. Perfect for eating one now & saving one for lunch tomorrow! [Crab Cake Gyro]: For Lenten, they have specials, and this one did not disappoint. The crab cake was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I love the innovation of the seaside tzatziki that paired well with the crab cake. I tasted a hint of Old Bay. Perfection. I will be eating at this place over and over again. I cannot wait to try everything on the menu!
