I have not been to a restaurant that has all of its staff 100% pleasant 100% of the time. It has a modernized diner feel. Food is always on par. I love their breakfast food. Veggie omelet is my go to meal with wheat toast and add a side of sausage patty. On this occasion, my sister ordered the Gary B's Breakfast- items came with world's largest pancakes. I was also expecting actual pickles, not sliced pickles so was disappointed by that. Pork chops with two sides: sweet potato fries and Mac & cheese - 4* decent pork chops and the mac and cheese wasn't anything special but it hit the spot for me so I was happy! Chicken dinner (two thighs, one drumstick, one breast) with two sides: Sly's fries and mashed potatoes - 5* as always the chicken here is delicious. Just minutes away from home sits this Dinner Gem!! The atmosphere here is amazing, everyone is super friendly. The staff here helped each other made sure we had refills ect. The food was amazing I ordered the Garry B's it was amazing, the eggs were made to perfection, super crispy bacon. On the side I ordered oatmeal my favorite. Took my family for Valentine's Day after having it recommended by a great friend. We were not disappointed. Seated fast (8:45am) and Enrique came by quickly and got our drinks. The food was great and quick. The portions, massive. My 21 year old got a double stack of pancakes and he couldn't finish. Even the kids portions are huge. This is my local regular dinner. Locally sourced ingredients, excellent service, hometown atmosphere. The owner is around most of the time chatting with patrons and making sure he gets immediate feedback on your meal. It is a simple menu, but the kind of place where everything is done so well, that you almost always know ahead of time what you want to have on that visit. Except for the desserts, which are seasonally prepared, and always pleasing and never excessively rich. Don't shy away from the coffee either; they have a roast prepared specifically for them that is well balanced and smooth. I also have to rave about their willingness to modify dishes to suit every dietary needs or restrictions. Terrific food in a modern diner atmosphere. The fried chicken was the star of our meal! The four pieces of chicken were perfectly cooked with moist meat and well seasoned crispy exteriors. Really fabulous! If you get the dinner it comes with two sides - we selected the green beans and the Mac and cheese. The green beans were prepared in the southern way with ham and were soft and flavorful. The Mac and cheese was as hoped for - creamy and cheesy. My husband ordered the Rachel sandwich with fries. The Rachel is a turkey version of a Rueben. It's a hearty sandwich with plenty of turkey, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese. The fries were seasoned well and had a crusty exterior that made them stand out from regular fries. Everything came out piping hot! The dessert list was long -and all of it made onsite. We chose the peach crisp and it was enough for three to four people. The topping was oaty and buttery with lots of cinnamon, and the peaches were plentiful - really wonderful! We walked in and it was packed on a Sunday around d 1130am. We waited outside due to the small or no waiting area. Servers will seat you when space is available. We waited approx 10 mins for our table -no biggie. We were a family of 5, ordered our breakfast, and food came out fresh! The portions are generous (except French toast was average portion). Everything was delicious , we recommend the CHICKEN AND WAFFLES!!! Lastly, an older gentleman we didn't catch his name walked around to each table and asked to ensure if our meals were good and if we needed anything, we thought it was a thoughtful gesture and showed they cared. Hubby found Tom and Ray's by Yelp of course! We live a few minutes away and didn't notice this restaurant. The family and I took a chance after church and we are so happy we did! Pros -The service was very tentative and friendly. I noticed it was all local high school or college kids working as servers. Love this! It gives them a chance to earn some cash and also gives them opportunities! -So many choices on the menu! Most of my family decided on breakfast foods. The pancakes my son ordered were bigger than his head! They were fluffy and hot! My daughter had a large fresh waffle, it was airy with a slight crisp. I have no idea what my husband ordered because he ate it all when the server brought it over. I had the best Reuben sandwich. It was thick with corned beef and melted cheese. The bread was toasted with such a delightful crunch and buttery. My french fries were so crispy, my family was stealing them from me! -We loved the vibe of the restaurant. Small, updated, and clean place.. definitely felt homey! Cons -Maybe a slight wait during breakfast/brunch hours -Small parking lot Tom and Ray's will not disappoint you with their food and service. Hole in the wall, seems we must have gone when they were closing. The food isn't much to write home about. It was..OK. the okra was good. The fries were good. The chicken was *shrug* OK. Macaroni and cheese was OK. The coleslaw texture was weird... not typically cut like this. The food overall was a little bland. The waitress was polite and nice. The place looks like it has a lot of potential. The inside seating area needs work to separate the tables from looking like a cafeteria. I really wanted this place to be good, but it didn't meet that for me.. it was OK. Guess we'll try breakfast and let you know on that. read more

Brunch today was sad for me. It was a Sunday morning and my husband thought of ordering here. I ordered a Gary B's (scrambled egg and sausage) with a Banana Nutella pancake upgrade. He ordered a Veggie Omelette with sausage and a waffle upgrade. I opened everything and reached for the pancake first! It was disappointing. I see photo reviews and this does not look as generous with Nutella as those photos. Much worse was the banana was disgusting; was unfresh and dark colored. I scraped it off from the pancakes. It's good I have fresh bananas at home. The sausage was hard so it was not great either. The only reason for 3 stars and not 2 is because my husband enjoyed his omelette and waffles! read more

They don't have biscuits every day but when they do have them they are fantastic! These biscuits are not food, they are little pillows of happiness. I'm somewhat of an expert because I've eaten biscuits all over the south for 60 years and tom and rays are as good as any I've ever had. Great service too. read more

It's been a while since I've eaten there and today we thought we'd give it a try. Here's what I got: Pros: Chorizo eggs were good Cons: Coffee was super watered down even after asking for another cup Con that needs to be fixed right now: One of the employees stood right outside of the door and proceeded to smoke a whole cigarrete with intermittent spitting in between puffs. This guy was right outside of the door. When he finished he walked right in wafting the smell of cigarette smoke in and proceeded to go behind the counter where food was being prepped. I've lived here for 10 years and have tried to support Tom and Ray's as much as we could through all of the transitions. I stopped going a couple of years ago because of a negative experience and I decided to try them again today. That last con is what did me in. I know you guys are the only real breakfast game in town and want to take care of the community but I will not be coming back and will not be recommending anyone to go. Since we moved to Damascus, I've been wanting to check out local breakfast spots. I heard about Tom and Ray's from a neighbor and we decided to try them out on a Saturday morning. The restaurant is located at the Damascus shopping center on the other side of Safeway. Plenty of parking. Walking in I was impressed by the set up and decor, which was very welcoming, clean, and updated. We waited about 5 mins for a big table. I can't remember our server's name, but she was very sweet and attentive. A gentleman that sat behind us seemed to be giving her a hard time, but she really handled herself well. My husband ordered French toast and the two egg breakfast, my daughter ordered a waffle with a side of bacon, and I opted for the two egg breakfast with a biscuit and the chipped beef gravy. The food came out pretty quickly and smelled amazing. I told my husband that I hadn't had scrambled eggs that tasted that great in a while. The biscuit was moist and went perfectly with the gravy. Only thing was I'm not used to chipped beef gravy being that thick. Overall, good service, nice setup, and great food. read more

Love love this place!!! We accidentally found this place a while ago, and have been a regular since. It's a diner but the menu is much more focused; not the typical 10-page diner menu. We also like the fact that they source the meats from nearby local farms. Food wise, they're tasted great and consistent from time to time. Many of items on the menu are made in house from scratch and you can really taste the love. We're super duper loved their fried chickens and chicken tenders. We have never had better than theirs. They're the best!! The fried chicken and the chicken tenders are super moist and well seasoned. Super recommended!! The chicken livers are also good and one of my favorite although I realize it's a delicacy and hence many people will say chicken livers??? We also like their steak and cheese sandwich. You can tell the quality of the meat that they use in the sandwich. The pancakes are also a super duper good!!! Service is always great and attentive. It's a small and local establishment that gives you a more a homey, honest / not pretentious, and welcoming feeling. Many of the waitstaffs are students from a nearby high school. So ... where do I start. I went to Damascus to visit CVS. I discovered the pharmacy didn't open until 11AM. I was a regular at their location on the main drag in town from 2004 until they lost/sold to the Hornets Nest folks. The food was always fast and reasonably priced. The new location looks more like a bistro than a greasy spoon type joint. I order the grilled chicken sandwich. It's like $12.95 and comes with chips. I asked for bacon, cheese , and raw onions. I upgrade to Fries and also got an unsweet tea The sandwich tasted fine and I have no complaints about it. The fries are those cheap fries where they grind up the skins, bleach them, and then attach it to the potato. Most places refer to them as season fries. But, really they taste like a cheap processed fry that really doesn't taste like a potato. Sysko sells them and they are the cheapest possible thing a restaurant can purchase. To the owner.... Psst ... Have you tried them ? They suck! The eye opener happened when the check came. The bill was right around $26.00 before gratuity. They charged $4.00 for 2 strips of bacon, $2.95 for a slice of American cheese, and just under $4.00 for a side of fries. Having already finished the meal I paid with a customary tip and left. After stewing on it for a day I called to speak with the manager. A lady answered and said the couple that owned the place wasn't in. But, I could talk to her. She said that perhaps the waitress entered the stuff wrong. I explained that $32.00 (tip included) for a grilled chicken sandwich, fries, and an iced tea is a complete ripoff and that's how I felt. She told me she understood how I felt and assured me I'd hear from someone soon. I waited for more than a week for a promised call from one of the owners which by the way isn't Gary. Giving them time to call before posting this honest review. Sadly Tom & Rays is gone and this was a complete joke. To the owner: You got me once but I won't be back! read more
