Horrible experiences with Tom Martin and his crew. Do NOT hire him unless you want only headaches. I don't have time to detail all the awful experiences I had with them over the last several days, but the straw that broke the camel's back was Tom telling me yesterday that he would be back at 8am this morning to finish work on my driveway and storm drain, then when I call him at 8:15am he yells at me that I did something wrong! He says the workers didn't show up (same thing happened as well yesterday, showed up late), and they wouldn't be here til 9:30am (after I had changed my schedule around to accommodate the 8am start). I asked when he was going to let me know that they were not coming at 8am, and he hid from taking responsibility by saying that I told him not to call before 8:30am. However, that was in general last week, and obviously NOT relevant to today because we had scheduled today's work for 8am, so of course I could take a call today before 8:30am! He finally apologized, saying he was upset about his workers and took it out on me. SO UNPROFESSIONAL! What is so disturbing is that the first time he was supposed to be here days ago, he made an appointment by phone. When the day and time came, and 90 minutes had passed with no call, I finally called him and he said that he had forgotten about the appointment! SERIOUSLY?? Blamed it on some story about that he had left his planner in his son's truck, but when he finally showed up, he pulled out a notepad to write something down, and I saw that my name, address and the appointment time was all noted there! Then Tom had the audacity as he was leaving that first day to tell me to write a good review on Yelp for him! I said I would do so when all the work was completed days later, but of course that's NOT going to happen now! :( These are just 2 instances of Tom's irresponsibility and the extraordinary frustrations that I went through with him. His worker Travis seemed very nice and helpful, but did not communicate with Tom the owner thoroughly about the work Travis had done alone here, so there was extensive miscommunications with everyone from Day One. I could go on and on - I've only shared a small part of this mess, but I've already wasted so much time dealing with these people that I have to move on. Fortunately a neighbor has given me a great referral, and the new company coming tomorrow to clean up the situation. I tried to ignore all the problems, lack of timely communications, being late, etc. because I so much wanted this to work out. But I should have realized when the owner not only was 2 hours late to first appointment, but had forgotten the appointment to begin with, that it was a harbinger of worse things to come. :( read more

We couldn't be more pleased with the work Sean Martin and his crew performed. They were professional, prompt, courteous, and the clean up great. We had them replace about 45 feet of the sewer using the pipe bursting/sleave method and they put in couple cleanouts. Sean made arrangements for the inspector to be here, and everything passed with flying colors. Would not hesitate to refer them or to use them again. read more

These guys were awesome. They fit us in quickly, and were able to work around our schedule. They unclogged our pipe in under 10 minutes (and this was after my husband had spent a day trying to snake it). They mentioned that they also have the video camera to send down if our pipe clogged again quickly. We will be calling them if have any further problems. read more

I (am pretty sure) we used Tom Martin Plumbing several years ago to clear out our main sewer line. We have an older home and our "waste" was backing up into our bath tub... gross! I say 'pretty sure', because it's the only plumber name and number that I saved into my phone. We were happy with the service we received back then. Cleaned out the line, installed a 'clean out' and no problems for the past few years. Unfortunately, the problem happened again. We couldn't use the water anywhere as it was all backing up into our tub. As I mentioned I searched my phone and found his number. If it was who we used last time, we were happy and we gave him a call. We called at 8pm and I was told he could be at our house between 2-4pm the following day. Not ideal, but we could make it work (we have a 3 year old potty training and my wife and I like to shower daily, so no running water is not fun). I cleared my schedule and was home from 2-4pm... no call, no plumber. So, I called him. He had no information about our call or appointment, so I gave him all of my information again. He said he could be here by 5pm. At 5:50pm he calls complaining about traffic and that since he's stuck in traffic in Berkeley, he was going to do another job there and come to our house in 45 minutes. I said, "okay, no problem..." It is now almost 8pm. We've called another plumber who is already working on the problem. I'm glad when small business owners have a lot of work and are busy. All I needed was a little customer service and a couple phone calls letting me know "hey I'm running behind today" or "I'm really sorry I told you 2-4pm, but I will be there at X o'clock"... but I didn't get either. Sorry TM, but you're no longer the only plumber number saved in my phone. read more

I made a appointment about a week ago with these guys seemed nice informative then come day of no show! I work till about 3 am and to wake up at 830 is rough so for them to not show let alone call what!?! So 30 minutes after appointment time I call the "business" for the to tell me they forgot! They can't help me for multiple hours! Why make a appointment if you can't keep if or remember !! Never again! read more

Had a great experience with these guys! I was experiencing a major clog in the main toilet line. When we showered too long or tried to use the toilet too many times, it would back up into our shower! Gross! I called 2 other places, had plumbers come out to quote. First guy said he would have to pull out the toilet and all this other BS. Tried to charge me $600.. Second guy said he wouldn't have to take out the toilet but still tried to charge me $400 plus $100 for coming out on the weekend... although I don't know much about plumbing.. I really felt like these first two guys were trying to take me for a ride.. Called Tom Martin Plumbing after consulting yelp. They came to my house within the hour and got it all done for under $300! They were very friendly and professional.. and best of all I didn't feel like I was about to get ripped off! Thanks for saving me guys! Highly recommended! read more

Phone call in to get help = kitchen sink leaking under the house (fully lined, 3' crawl space), guy on the phone stalled, and gave every excuse why he really couldn't help. "Kitchen sink? Ahhh.... Well..." "Crawl space?.... Yeah, I don't think I have anyone thin enough to get under there..." Seriously???!!! read more

Tom was great. He made time in his schedule to come out and clear my sewer line. He did need my assistance however with running the bath water and flushing the toilets to make sure the line was clear, but I didn't mind helping out. I did mention to him that I found him on Yelp but I forgot to ask for the 15% discount when I paid. read more

These guys diagnosed a leak I couldn't find a couple days ago. Capped the leak as short fix and then came out yesterday and today to redo piping surrounding leak and another small issue I added to the job. I found Travis and Ron with Tom Martin Plumbing to be very friendly and very good at explaining what they were doing. They first listened as I told them what I'd done to try to find the leak and used that info to speed their search. The fix got delayed one day from the initial appointment but they communicated with me why and when they'd be out, and then showed up sooner than the new time they expected. Very responsive. Tom (owner or manager) was also communicative on the phone. I'd use these guys again. read more

Price to repair got jacked up on me and when I questioned it, he blamed his worker for jacking up the bid on his own (though I could hear the conversation between the two outside my window) and claimed he had been her more than he had. I don't think it was malicious, just was confused about when he had been there and what he had told me originally. While the work itself seemed OK, I would definitely not use him again. read more

Tom is easy to get hold of. He has very flexible hours (saturday included) to be responsive. I do think he overcharges. He overcharged me $100 on a part from a local store. Also, while he was doing other plumbing repairs, i asked him to look at my dishwasher which i thought could be a plumbing issue, and he charged me $100 to tell me I should get an appliance repairman. I didn't get a good understanding of how he charges for work, so I think he felt he had some flexibility. read more

Don't hesitate to give Tom Martin Plumbing your business. I had a little mishap while changing out my bathroom faucet. The angle stop was leaking and the threaded connection was corroded beyond repair. I couldn't get the connection piece off and I was a little worried I was going to break something. I had to shut off the main water supply so I wouldn't flood my bathroom and I needed a plumber fast. I called a few places before calling Tom and didn't get an answer. Tom answered right away and said he could be over in a couple of hours. The guys showed up after a follow up call and went right to work. They were able to get the corroded threaded section off and went out to get the new parts. Once they returned the new parts went in quickly, the water came back on and everything worked out nicely. The pricing was very reasonable and the service and attentiveness was top notch. I'm not sure all of the services they offer but I suspect they are a full service plumbing contractor. read more

Had a great experience working with Sean and his team! After other companies' claimed to have fixed our backup, Sean was the only one to actually figure out why we kept having plumbing problems. He was extremely thorough, patient, and did a great job explaining what prior owners of our house had done to our house and why we are having problems. In the end, he fixed our problems, identified future next steps, and did it all at a very reasonable cost. Will be using him for all our future plumbing problems! read more

We called Tom Martin Plumbing Saturday morning, requesting help to fix a leak which developed under our kitchen sink. We were pleasantly surprised when a live person answered our call, rather than a machine. My husband spoke with Tom, who said someone would be out that afternoon around 1pm or 2pm. Sure enough, David arrived that same afternoon around 1pm. He was courteous, professional, and was able to fix the leak within a reasonable time, which included two trips to the store for parts. In the end, we paid $208 for two hours of work. Labor, parts, and a 10% Yelp discount were factored into the final amount. We considered this amount fair and will most likely contact Tom Martin and his team for future plumbing needs. Thanks for a positive experience! read more

Sean (Tom's son) was so professional and went above and beyond what I expected. I called him on a Tuesday night and he was at our rental in Dublin at 9am the next morning, on time, to fix a bathroom faucet. A few days later the water heater on the back patio died. I thought the tenant would be home to let him in but she wasn't. But that didn't stop Sean. He and his partner lifted the new water heater over the back wall, installed it and took the old one with them, back over the wall. I will definitely use Sean again and happy to refer him to others. read more

Called Tom about 6 months ago to fix a main sewer line in front of my house. Very messy and about 3-4 ft deep. Tom and his son dug down and replaced the pipe with VERY minimal damage to the surrounding area. The other plumber I called wanted to rip out a long hedge that runs along the area, which he would have subbed to his landscaper for another $1,000.00!, anyway very pleased with the work and customer service. Price was competitive, slightly above a the other guys BUT I didn't have to pay for a hedge removal and be stuck looking at my neighbors dead lawn! read more

We had a plumber sent from our home warranty company to investigate a clog in the line, and they were worthless. I decided I would rather pay an experienced plumber directly instead to make sure it was done right, and I randomly picked Tom Martin because of the great Yelp reviews and because it was a family operated business. So glad I did!! Tom himself answered the phone, and was able to send someone out within a few hours of my call. But the real amazing part was the quality of the people he sent to our house. TJ came first to assess the project. He was incredibly competent and mindful of safety hazards (put cones and wood covers over the holes dug to access below). He also made sure we understood everything he was explaining, including the costs. Once the problem was identified and a contract signed, David and Alan took over, and they were hard working and courteous. They answered every question we had, and we felt very comfortable leaving the job in their hands while we were not at home during the day. They even came out on a Saturday morning to finish backfilling the holes and replacing the disturbed sod. We had our cleanout upgraded and trenchless pipe replacement, and "killing" of troublesome tree roots. It was a lot of work, but it was done quickly and with permits. A one year warranty is included. I feel like the cost was very fair for the amount and quality of work - so glad we didn't decide to go with the home warranty and picked our own plumber! this father-son team was very prompt, helpful, and polite. they came in to snake the sewer line leading out of our home. we thought the problem was solved, but it backed up again within a few days. they came back promptly, re-snaked it, and used a camera to further diagnose the problem. they did not charge us for any of this follow-up. we ended up hiring them to correct the issues we discovered (necessitating a partial sewer lateral replacement). they came the next day and finished the job by evening. we had to pull up bricks to do the repairs, and they put them back so well i couldn't tell they had been moved. i asked about a few other plumbing issues i was concerned about and they recommended i wait, stating those repairs weren't essential. in short, these guys weren't going to try to take my money unnecessarily. i would recommend them, and i would call on them again. many thanks! jennifer b, berkeley, ca read more
