This is a very nice Japanese grocery for anyone in the area! Has a good selection of Japanese foods. There were enough workers there to keep everything running well. The only problems I have with Tomato is their prices. They are slightly steep, but they also sometimes have tags in wrong places so you might confuse it with something else. I'm keeping my review a 5 star review despite this. Me and the person I came with accidentally bought 12 dollar umeboshi (pickled plums) instead of the four dollar umeboshi, because the tags were oddly placed. However, the employee was able to give us a refund, and was very polite and helpful about it. Will be coming back if in the area! read more

This is an amazing store, lots of great products and I can't lie had everything I actually needed. The frozen stuff is quality and the meats they have are good. Love all the snacks and instant noodles. Had lots of stuff I needed since our move to the area, this includes new bowls and cooking accessories that broke during move. It's a one stop shop. Loved they had enoki mushrooms (hard to find) and my wife got lots of stuff so we can have hot pot and chanko at home this summer. Service is good, owner and worker are so darn friendly. I wanted to find something to go into a dish that I found the recipe for online. It was called furikake but I had no idea where I would find this until I remember seeing this cute little grocery store next door to Ollie's. Once I stepped inside Tomato Japanese Grocery, I was amazed by the large selection of Japanese products on the shelves. The store clerk greeted me warmly and was more than happy to help me find these products. I decided that I wanted to do everything from scratch, so I decided to forego the prepackaged seasonings and make my own using the same ingredients but without the chemical preservatives. Again, the store clerk obliged me and walked me directly to each item as I collected them from my list. Lately, I have been into Japanese grocery stores and their products. My best friend from high school wanted to stop by his favorite grocery store while running errands. Tomatoes Japanese grocery store is a wonderful place hidden in a strip mall in Marietta, GA that has wonderful selection of products. I had the Pocky candy Stix and they were wonderful. The selection of rice and meats were very good as well. The selection of Japanese candy is nice and unique as well. I don't live in GA, but if I did, I would definitely come to this grocery store. It is a great grocery store with wonderful products. The staff is also very helpful and friendly, and willing to lend a helping hand if you need it. All in all, it is a great store!! read more

I found Tomato leaving from Foxcreek driving range nearby, as I put bowl of ramen, Ramune, mango cream soda, and other snacks into my basket I couldn't help but daydream being in Japan and walking to a convenience shop and picking up snacks each day from a shop like this one. Anyway, tomato is small (about 3 full aisles) but it has your essentials. They have some veggies and meats also, it's nice for a drop in if you're lazy and just wanting to pick up quick meals and snacks. This review is for the Tomato Japanese Grocery Store located in Smyrna near the corner of Cobb Parkway (US 41) and Windy Hill Road. This Tomato store (pronounced "toh-MAH-toh") is known by regulars as Tomato #1 with the other location in Norcross on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard (SR 141) known as Tomato #2. These unassuming Japanese grocery stores have been in the Atlanta area for decades. As I understand it, Tomato is the name of the original owner. After running these businesses for decades, the owner decided to move back to Japan. In 2014, ownership changed hands at Tomato #1 to a Korean owner. Ownership at the restaurant next door, Umezono, also changed hands (it's now known as I Love Sushi). Sister stores/restaurants in Norcross, Tomato #2 and Sushi Yoko, are also under different ownership now. The Tomato stores are unique in Atlanta. They are one-stop shops for all things Japanese, from food to household products. The stores are small. Tomato #1 is noticeably smaller than Tomato #2, but it still packs quite a punch. The aisles are lined and densely stocked with Japanese snacks and instant ramen, often in colorful packaging, that can be hard or even impossible to find elsewhere in the Atlanta area. Pocky and other Glico products, Milky, Calbee, Vegips, Bourbon, Himemaru, Kameda Crisps, dried squid, dried fish, beef jerky, shrimp chips, snow pea crisps, dried seaweed snacks, mochi (Japanese rice cakes), microwaveable takoyaki (octopus balls), and various bean-filled treats are examples of several of the snacks you can find. Noodles include all sorts of ramen varieties such as shio and shoyu ramen, plus different brands like Go Ramen!, Sapporo Ichiban, and Charumera. Tomato is also great for fresh fish to cook or make sushi, vegetables, and condiments. I've seen chefs from the restaurant next door enter Tomato from the back to grab ingredients for their kitchen. Fresh sashimi includes basics like maguro (tuna) and sake (salmon), but I've also seen hokkigai (surf clam), ika (squid), saba (mackerel), and tako (octopus). Many of these products are from Japan. In addition, there is an inventory of media including Japanese music (J-pop), anime, manga (Japanese comics), movies, and TV shows. Tomato's a small, bodega-sized Japanese grocery that meets expectations if you take its unavoidable limitations into account. It's a good option for sudden Japanese snack/recipe pangs. The selection is decent for its size: I came here because I couldn't find any mirin at Great Wall and didn't want to drive all the way to Doraville just to overpay at H-Mart. I found a basic Kikkoman mirin that I needed for a recipe. It was the only one of the type I could see on the shelf, which appears to be a general rule: for items in a given category, expect two or three choices at most. That said, the snack aisle is well-populated, and there are surprising items in stock, such as a wide selection of Berkshire pork sausages. Not the item I would've loaded up on...but pretty cool. Prices are higher since it's a small shop that operates on lower volume. The margins will differ on the item, though. Cooking staples like soy sauce, mirin, and curry have pretty small price premiums. But snacks seem to have much larger ones: a bag of matcha Kit-Kats was $9.99 at Tomato when it's $5.99 at Great Wall. These limitations aside, Tomato has a neat program where those spending over $20 will get a 5% discount on weekdays, 10% on Saturday. Presumably it's to help with sales volume. In addition, the Japanese rice selection (California-grown, not Japanese import) is pretty good, better than what I recall at Great Wall or H-Mart. Service is low-key and friendly too. Tomato is good for what it is: a small Japanese grocery that is good for grabbing cooking staples, especially when you don't want to go Doraville or Duluth. The new location is in the same plaza as Blue Moon Pizza and Ollie's. I've been interested in seeing the offerings at this store for a really long time, but the anticipation must have built it up too much for me. I was expecting a lot larger of a selection and more prepared foods, like inari sushi and bakery items, but I didn't see any. There are bento boxes available at noon Saturdays & Sundays. Ultimately, there are still some good treats and maybe easier to find than trying to locate them in a larger international supermarket. The business is run by Japanese owners and workers, and the cleanliness of the store is out of this world. There is frozen sushi grade fish available, although not a large selection. The incredible selections are there when it comes to packaged foods, which is typical of Japanese food culture. I was able to get some items for shabu shabu to make at home. The pricing is also a bit higher, which is expected for a smaller business and true to Japanese culture. read more

Walking in it looks like a small mom n pop shop, all of the items provided are very Japanese oriented (of course!) They even have some other fun items near the register that are anime related for us nerds :)! I come here for the sushi-grade fish and the options they have are a little small for my liking, a couple of different kind of tunas: skipjack, fatty (toro?), octo heads, squid, scallops. Normally, I shop at the other Tomato location on 141 in Norcross, but apparently you can sign up for a yearly membership of $10 that qualifies you for 10% off all purchases on the weekend. With that said, my grandpa is a member so he had me chauffeur him to buy Japanese groceries at the Smyrna location. My grandpa was raised culturally Japanese when he was a boy in Taiwan, so his go-to meals at home (and out of home) are Japanese. You know when grandparents get really old they actually start acting like kids? So every time he's in a Japanese grocery store, he's like a kid in a candy shop. Needless to say, we ended up with a ton of stuff from Tomato. Types of things you can buy at Tomato: - Fresh fish for cooking or for sushi - Every kind of noodles (ramen, udon, instant, etc) - Sauces: Soy sauce, rice vinegar, Japanese mayo, chili oil, tonkatsu sauce - Pickled vegetables, radish, mushrooms, canned fish - Curry packets galore - Miso powder, and nori (seaweed) - Wide variety of Pocky and Asian snacks - Japanese shampoo and face wash - Drinks: ramune, Pocari sweat, yogurt drinks, Calpico, sake Overall, this location seems about the same size as their 141 location, but is much harder to find. If you are on Cobb Parkway heading north, it will be on your left right before you hit Windy Hill Road. And you will ask yourself, "Is this shopping center abandoned? There doesn't look like anything is here..." At least that's what I asked myself. I will never, ever come back to this establishment again. I went in with my mother and we were the only people in the store. There was only one employee working the front desk, an elderly Japanese woman. The first red flag occurred as we were walking around the store. My mother and I noticed she was following us around pretending to be checking the merchandise. As a person of color, I know when someone is following me to see if I'm stealing. And my mother knows as well. My mother politely asked the woman to stop following us and she went back to the front desk where she started watching us intently on the security monitor. My mother then went up to her and told her that we do not steal. The woman claimed that she had to watch us because her boss demanded that she do so. My mother told her that doesn't matter as we still do not steal. We paid for our overpriced items and left. It's not enough that this grocery store has a small variety of items and not much of it is plenty in supply. But, given the fact that it is run by racists, I can say that I will not be returning. read more

I'm gonna go with "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" I mean, I got nothin'! I can't compare it to the other Japanese market, because I know of no other Japanese Grocery Store in the city. I find that it's odd being way the hell up on Cobb Pkwy. Quite amusing though that I had to pull into the Boomers parking lot to find this little place. That right there makes it an intriguing find immediately. They offer a little bit of everything. Not being someone that knows that much about Japanese whatsoever I can only guess what some of the products were. They seem to cover the bases though from what I could make out. Fish, candy, tea, household items... Most products have ingredients in English on the wrapper which helped tremendously! We hooked ourselves up with some candy and "Georgia" Coffee which I was told was delish. (not a coffee drinker) After spending a little time in the store and not having really enough time to absorb it all, I'll definitely be back to explore. The quality of these items are beyond anything I can find in any generic grocery store. Between the rice the noodles the soy sauce so always have something you can enjoy. REVISION from earlier review- Tomato has reopened at a new location: 2359 Windy Hill Road which, if coming from I-75, is on the right in a shopping center about 1/2 block before Cobb Parkway (there is a traffic light at the entrance to the shopping center; the shopping center has a Blue Moon Pizza, a gigantic bargain store, and other shops). Much easier access than the previous location. NOTE: The Yelp map is still showing the old location which has now been demolished. Tomato #1 is a true Japanese "kombini"-type store and close to home. Almost all types of Japanese ingredients and dry goods are available along with a wide variety of ramen, udon, soba noodles. Definitely worth a visit for anyone in the metro area, literally less than 5 minutes from Windy Hill exit on I-75. read more

Shopping here before and after visiting Japan made me appreciate it even more, as I'm amazed the pricing on most items is pretty close to the prices we paid in Japan and their selection had almost everything we brought back (and quickly depleted). One thing I wish I'd done earlier, don't hesitate to ask the staff questions! Super super friendly staff and they will offer suggestions/assistance for any of your questions. As mentioned the selection is really top notch. Of course there's all the ramen (hard to find, quality brands like Myojo Chukazanmai and Menraku) and snacks you'd ever want, but I'm really impressed with their other stock. Shabu shabu beef, chashu, takoyaki, taiyaki, pickled vegetables, basically whatever you want they have. There's also skincare/non-food items as well, perfect for gifts. read more

I highly recommend this place. It has a lot of Japanese products. I was surprised to find sashimi grade frozen products. I bought some octopus, squid and scallops. I m surprised to see some yelpers complaining about prices. You have to be kidding me. I compared with amazon prime while in the store and 80% of the products where cheaper in the store. I bought udon and ramen noodles, Inari sushi pockets, dried fish and all was cheaper. A couple of items were a little pricey but few. The staff was so nice and helpful. I will go back. read more

I spent a good amount of time in Japan, and really got hooked on the food and drink. Since I've been back in the States I've found precious little to satisfy my appetite for Nihonjin edibles... that is, until I went into Tomato! I was overwhelmed with nostalgia, as the staff are Japanese, and there's less English signage in the store than more establishments in Japan. They had all the pre-packed snack foods, candies, and canned ingredients I'd been looking for, and lots of hard to find ingredients like udon and soba noodles. Additionally they had all the usual suspects like Pocky, yanyan, Hi-chew, Pretz, and Milky, but unlike most places they had more than one flavor of each, which was a nice surprise. I also picked up some Calpis (Calpico in the US), Pocari Sweat, and milk tea, all of which were favorites of mine when shopping convenies and vending machines in Japan. What a treat! Best of all they carry frozen, microwavable takoyaki, which are Japanese octopus balls and my absolute favorite Japanese street food! They're not as good as fresh ones from an Osaka street chef, but they're still a very passable version, and I highly recommend them. If I have any gripes it that 1) this place is hard to find, with no real sign, and wedged behind a strip club and a sushi bar. But maybe that keeps the gaijin away, who knows. And 2) they sell Japanese beer brands, but they're not actually made in Japan, and are not the same recipe; that is to say, they suck. I'd love to see them sell some real Kirin, Sapporo, and Asahi beers, along with canned chu-hi (chuhai) and Japanese microbrews. I'd be a regular customer for all three. Overall, this place is a must visit for the Nipponophile and a great place to get a feel for down-to-earth Japanese foods. read more

I heard there was a Japanese Grocery store near me sometime ago... and I randomly decided to go one day and I have never regretted setting foot in this place once. I really enjoy walking up and down the aisles and looking at everything. I will pick up items to read the ingredients. And my last trip I found Miso ramen that had no beef/chicken or fish ingredients!! What a lucky find, especially for instant ramen nowadays. It's hard for me to not buy snacks anywhere I go and I'll usually pick up pocky or the little panda cream filled cookies. Their selection isn't huge, but there's still something for everyone. There's also a room to the side that is filled with dvds of dramas, anime, and more... Some of the anime I can recognize from the pictures on the sides, but I can't read any of the titles. Also I'm not sure if the videos are for sale... I keep forgetting to ask. But again I'm usually just looking around... I typically buy my anime online... They also have a few different magazines in the front near the register. I bought one because I liked the artwork of some of the stories... now I just need to learn how to read Japanese. Other than that, this is definitely a cool little store. Instead of having to travel far to the larger Asian Markets, there's a little one in Marietta and you never know what you may find. There's plenty of parking as its never super crowded... well when I go it's not. And the service has been nice and helpful each time I've gone. Sure, I'm a gaijin, but my husband and brother in law can speak the language and they've lived there, so I feel like an exception to the rule a little, what can I say? So, to find a little authentic slice of Japan where I can get giant bags of sushi rice, tons of instant noodles, many more varieties of Pocky than you'll find at a grocery store, Japanese diningware like tea and sake sets and chopsticks, as well as other Japanese grocery products (including stuff from shampoo to specialty cookers), it's like a tiny slice of heaven. You know an ethnic grocery store is authentic when they don't bother to put English signage in front of the building... which may make finding Tomato a little tricky for your average gaijin. But that's a compliment, not a quibble, because this place is the Real Thing. It was as close to being back in Japan as anything I've found in Atlanta. Like Japan itself, Tomato is monocultural. This is no catch-all Asian grocery: It's a purely Japanese place with purely Japanese food. It's where you want to go for basic stuff like mirin, hanakatsuo, shiro dashi, et alia... sashimi-grade fish... and prepared foods (curry rice, for example) just like you'd see on the shelf in Osaka.
