LOVE. THESE. GUYS. Every dealing that I've had with Matt and Tom has been top shelf--full of genuinely kind and approachable attitudes and a serious appreciation for customer service. I bought my first bike, my lil work horse at this shop, owner was very cool, really knowledgeable and straight up. The service/labor prices are SUPER reasonable and you get the sense that these guys will truly finesse your bike back to life. The shop is small but mighty, and with every service, you leave with the confidence that Matt and Tom will stand behind their work. Oh man, Tom & Matt are awesome. I got an old bike from a friend of mine (my first bike in 25 years) and after I got it home I realized it needed a lot more work than I originally thought. I figured I might be shelling out 4-500 bucks. It was a solid frame though so I figured it was worth it. When I got to the shop, Tom took a cursory look at it and quick-quoted 150-200. Then he walked around the bike and said "ooh wow" (I heard "whatever you thought this would cost, double it"). I was starting to think I had made a mistake with this bike. Tom said he would take it in and work up a more detailed quote and call me back in a couple of hours. He called with a quote of about $273 and said it would be ready on Saturday. I was skeptical, this was the week of the 4th of July and this bike clearly needed a LOT of work. Well today is Saturday and Matt called me about an hour ago and said it was all ready to go with a total of $274. My bike looks awesome and I will never take her to anyone else. These guys knew I was clueless about bikes, but treated me with so much respect, explaining anything I had questions about without a hint of condescension. I would recommend them to anyone. I brought in a janky old Miyata that needed a new rear wheel, cassette and derailleur. Mechanic Tom took about 2 minutes looking over the bike/shuffling through drawers of parts to figure out the cheapest possible way to tackle it, gave me a cheap estimate , and told me he expected to have the repair completed in ~48 hours. The next day, I got an enthusiastic voicemail saying that the repair was complete, and the bike exceeded his expectations, rides great, looks great etc. etc. The repair was crazy quick, cheap and the bike rides great. Really couldn't imagine better service, I'll definitely be back for all my future repairs. read more

I just went to WTF to check it out today. I was rather shocked that there were no bikes hanging in the windows or gobs and gobs of accessories or spandex shorts and multicolored jerseys. However, when I got to talking to Tom I realized I was talking to someone who absolutely loves bicycle repair. He likes it so much he charges a fraction of what other bike shops charge for the same repair! He's friendly, kind, sexy (Ladies, you are going to flip your lid!), charming, dedicated, fast (repairs only Ladies!), debonair and strong! When I first brought my entirely deconstructed bike to him a couple years ago, fully expecting it to take several days, I was shocked to hear a message on my voicemail from the owner bright and early the next morning: "Your bike is ready." Not at all like WTF Bikes!!! TLDR: I got upsold, ripped off, had to take my bike back multiple times and the work was not completed until I did it myself. Save yourself the trouble and go to Seven Corners bike shop instead. I used to take my bike into WTF Bikes because they were fast, cheap and honest. I moved back to the area and tried to take my bike to WTF, and instead noticed that they had switched their name to Tomcat. No biggie, took my bike in anyway HUGE MISTAKE. WTF was sold to Tom. I went in and met Tom for the first time. I told him that I was having issues in between gears, and my brake pads needed to be replaced. I let him upsell me on a new cassette, even though I knew I did not need it, but I did know that I would be putting some serious miles on my bike, so I figured it would just be a matter of time. I wanted upgraded brakes, so I let him upsell me on that, and he also said he would do a full tune up. I like giving my business to new business owners, and I figured I would have no issues with my bike after pickup. So I agreed to the work and waited for the call. The initial work took longer than the expected time, but I was moving so no big deal. I eventually picked up my bike and took it home. The first ride confirmed what I already knew, I was getting screwed. My bike, even though it had a new cassette, was still not shifting right. I took it back in, Tom apologized and said someone else in the shop had worked on it. No problem, I went back at a later time to pick up my bike. Next ride, I was getting some rubbing noise on my brakes, so I took it back in. I tried to take it in during the week, and there were new hours posted on the door. Apparently they closed at 2pm that day, another wasted trip. I took it back on a Saturday, around noon. There was a sign on the door saying they were out to lunch. No problem, I waited... about an hour and a half. Finally, I got exasperated enough and I texted a number on the door asking when they were coming back? Someone finally showed up, Tom was not there, one of his "friends was covering for two weeks", while Tom was at Burning Man. I told his friend I was having issues with the brakes that were just upgraded, he said he was backed up (apparently the long lunch cut into the workload for the day). Even though I was pretty upset, I left my bike, about a week later I called asking for an update. They said they were not able to replicate the issue and my bike was ready for pickup (they never bothered to call me and let me know it was ready). When I picked up the bike, his friend did say that maybe I was riding in the wrong gear, and the bike frame was bending causing the brakes to rub. So I gave him an "uh huh", but I was done. I brought my bike home, the brake noise was still there (even when coasting). I put my bike up on a rack at home and went to work. It took me 30 seconds and an allen wrench and I made the noise go away. The brake pad was too close to the brake rotor, super simple fix. I have since taken my bike to Seven Corners down the street, and I am super excited about going there. I got my wife's bike tuned up recently, with no upselling and at an extremely reasonable rate and the owner of Seven Corners is super chill and friendly. If you are near Brooklyn and need a solid, honest and friendly bike shop, go to Seven Corners. Tomcat is not worth your time, money or aggravation. read more

I ended up using WTF bikes in SE for a pretty extensive overhaul. New cassette, chain, cantilever brakes, rear wheel, shift and brake cables and bar tape, along with some fine tuning of things along way. Bike rides smooth. shifts with authority and the only sound I hear now is the whir of my tires on asphalt, not the creaks, groans and grinds that I'm used to. Pretty great for a bike that hasn't had more than chain oil in the last 7 years. Tom, the owner, is fantastic. Dude is super approachable and has a great sense of humor. Kinda wanted to hang out and just drink beers with him. He took his time to explain why certain things needed to be taken care of and essentially made my bike safer for an upcoming multi-day ride I have in September. I wasn't expecting to drop $300+ in a tune-up, but in the end it was completely worth it (and necessary). And he was able to get the work done in a few days. Okay, a little back story first. I got a pretty good bike a few years ago, then proceeded to never ride it. (It basically kept things in my garage company.) Then about three months ago I finally decided to get off of my fat ass and start riding it because it would be cheaper and faster then trimet. Now Stoney (named for the large BRIDGESTONE sticker on the side, I am creative, hur hur derp) is getting 3-6 miles of riding a day. It was getting to the point where various parts were sticking, deflating, rattling or gone. It was a metal swan in a death dive. Since this is my primary mode of transport and I'm in no mood to die, I stopped by here. It's the closest place to my house and the reviews were pretty solid. I'm definitely going back. Not only did he put up with me (I know fuck-all about my bike) but in ten minutes he transformed it from a rolling death trap into a mechanical badass. He also replaced the front inner tube that had a broken stem (I had literally NO IDEA) and hooked me up with a cheap replacement seat for the horrible, horrible bench saddle I had. Not only this, but he educated me on a few things. Stand pumps are better then hand pumps, oil your chain, and changing gears will make a world of a difference. After everything he did he gave me some recommendations on time for repairs and maintenance and sent me off with what I'm beginning to suspect might be a magic bike. I intended to just do two miles today, to WTF and back. It rides so good that as I type this I just got back from a 10+ mile adventure because I fucking could. Go there and throw your money at him. I went to the Bike Gallery and River City Bicycles several times over the years and finally figured out something important: these are NOT bike shops; they're sales floors. They're places for people with more money than sense. I used to go to Sellwood Cycles and still think they have some good mechanics, but that shop is going the way of the Bike Gallery. WTF, this is a real bicycles shop. This place has a heart and soul. It has solutions to your bike problems that do more than separate you from your money. And the guy who runs it . . . he's good. I'm a pretty good mechanic but I had a shifter I couldn't fix. I went to WTF to buy a new shifter. The owner said, "Let me see." He took one look and said, "It just needs adjustment." Without even asking, he put my bike up on a stand and fixed it--while answering the phone. Five minutes later, he had fixed the problem and charged me only $10. He's had several similar solutions that have kept me on the road. Solutions that the Bike Gallery would have tried to charge me $200 for and that Sellwood Cycle would have taken days to get done. I can't say enough about WTF. In my opinion, if you go anywhere else for a bike repair or a used part, you're making a mistake. An expensive mistake. The guy has a bike chain tattooed to his arm. Nearby so I was able to walk my bike over to have a flat replaced. I totally expected to drop it off and pick it up later as he (?) was already working on a bike. Apparently flats are fixed on the spot. He also replaced a worn rear tire w/ another less used at the shop. 15 bucks total for the fix in 5 minutes...and the best thing..NO BIKE SHOP ATTITUDE!! WTF bikes is a fantastic little shop operated by a very knowledgeable and cool fellow by the name of Tom. I had to drop off a wheel for a true and (it was between the hours of I was not supposed to park in front of the shop) and I handed my wheel over and Tom was like "GO! GO! Tom did an excellent job on my road bike. I wanted a quick tune up for my bike to get it ready for the Reach the Beach ride, and took it to WTF. He looked over my bike and found that it had heavily worn gears and chain, along with some more minor issues. He took the time to explain exactly what he found, explained how, with a little more TLC, my gears would have lasted more than the 7,000 or so miles they did, and offered me several alternatives for taking care of the problems he found. As soon as he got the part he had to order, he turned it around in a day. It is running great, now, and I am taking better care of the bike now. I stop by WTF bikes on Powell to get my bike fixed. In typical Portland fashion, the owner, Tom, is sitting outside eating a banana. He is tall, wearing a loose fitting shirt and jean shorts. He has a tattoo of a bike chain on his left arm. He has also forgotten the keys to his business in Bend this weekend. His car, stuffed with tarps and the like, attests to a recent outdoorsy trip. Tom offers to adjust the problem with my rear wheel using the multitool in his car. He then tells me that this is quite a bit like how people in India fix things: just a guy on a blanket on the road fixing things with a wrench. The position of the blanket in the market is passed down from generation to generation. I ask him what I can give him for his wisdom and quick fix. He replies "oooh, anywhere between $0-$5. I give him $6. I will definitely be back, this guy is pure Portland magic. read more

Love this place. I brought my bike in here that my son had seriously mistreated - rusty chain, broken derrailleur. Since it was the start of the bike season, I was expecting to wait a week before getting it back. Instead, they had it done in two days for less than the original estimate. When I picked it up and Tom (?) noticed that a pedal was missing a piece, he quickly replaced it with a used pedal, didn't charge me for it and gave me a matching one if the remaining pedal broke. read more

I was about to give up on my bike, a 2006 Kona Smoke, because it just didn't feel right anymore, but then Tom gave me some no BS recommendations and helped me realize that my bike still has another 10 years in it. When it came time to do the work on my rig, he was fast and got my bike back to me within a few days. It rides much much better than before and I am very happy with the service provided. The cost was almost as much as I paid for the bike a few years back, but I think it's well worth it. I had to stop back in a couple of times to get some minor adjustments, but that was expected with the amount of parts replaced. Tom never tried to upsell me, in fact he even advised against wasting money on higher end parts for my commuter rig. I have already started recommending the shop to my friends and colleagues. Oh yeah, he also helped me adjust the fit of the bike with a new stem. It's actually better than when I first got it. read more

Matt was so helpful and sweet, I went in not really knowing what I wanted and he set me up with an amazing bike that I know I can't get anywhere else. The fact that they customize their bikes in house and then sell them is so amazing, they really care about the bikes and Matt was so excited to sell me one, it was amazing how much pride he took in his work and how genuinely excited he was that I was going to get to take it home. Also, all the bikes were so reasonably priced and all the parts you could need were available as well, plus he installed all the add ons and showed me how to transport my lock efficiently. Both Tom and Larry are down to earth, helpful guys. I've taken my bikes to quite a few shops all around town, and for straight up repairs, WTF wins. Best prices in town and absolutely unbelievable turn around time. In the middle of summer, had them more or less overhaul my drivetrain all in under 24 hours. When you depend on your bike to get around, that's pretty damn impressive. Since this is a repair only shop, you don't get the huge selection of parts to select and replace, but if you're like me anyways, shop around for your replacement parts, and bring them to Tom and Larry for excellent work. read more

Went in expecting to drop it off and pick it up later, he fixed my damaged front wheel wobble in 10 minutes or less right then and there. I know nothing about bikes but expressed to him that I wanted to figure out how to fix things myself, so asked if he'd give me a tune-up minus the easy fixes. He said there were only two things to fix on it, sold me the parts for it and told me how to do it. While he was fixing my front wheel he told me what he was doing while he was doing it. I feel like in a lot of places where the service provider is the expert and the client knows nothing about the field, the provider disrespects the client's general intelligence simply because they don't share their knowledge. Absolutely none of that with Thomas. He answered all of my questions honestly and thoughtfully, told me what was needed now on the bike and what could wait. Down to earth person who understands the balance between what's perfect and what's realistic (and in your price range!) That kind of honesty and integrity is worth its weight in gold.
