Management needs to deal with this bouncer. This bouncer was super aggressive and made arguably racist comments to our group. Due to his actions and behavior, Tommy Joe's lost 20 customers who will never be back.

Brandon is hands down one of the best bartenders I've experienced at Tommy Joes From the moment you walk up to the bar, he makes you feel welcome like you've been coming there for years. His energy is upbeat, professional, and genuine -- the kind of presence that elevates the entire atmosphere. Not only does he make fantastic drinks (seriously, perfectly balanced every time), but he's also incredibly attentive. Even when the bar is packed, Brandon stays calm, organized, and on top of everything. You never feel overlooked. He checks in, remembers what you're drinking, and makes great recommendations if you're in the mood to try something new. What really stands out is his personality. He knows how to read the room -- whether you're there to celebrate, unwind after work, or just enjoy the vibe, he meets you there. He's friendly without being overbearing and professional without being distant. That balance is rare. If you're heading to Tommy Joe's, do yourself a favor and grab a seat at Brandon's bar. He's a big reason people keep coming back.

Food and service was very good. I happen to be there when they had a live band which was very nice as well. I had the rockfish sandwich with fries. The only thing I'll say is I wish they had put some mayo or some sort of dressing on it as it was kind of bland

Great dive bar with live music and surprisingly decent food - get the pretzel sticks! We enjoyed the live band performance on Friday night and there was no cover charge. The pretzel sticks were pipping hot and tasty with housemate beer cheese and honey mustard that I requested. Hubby got the chicken tenders that came with waffle fries (the waffle fries were tepid and brittle). There's an outdoor smoking area connected to the bar with a lingering smoke smell inside the bar. Whiskey and Ginger beer drink was standard. The DJ played a bunch of 80's and 90's hits with people in their 40's and 50's dancing the night away! There's also a pool table. While the vibe didn't quite fit us, we had a good time and a fun night out.

The food here is solid! Bar food done very well. Great service and friendly bartenders. I've been coming here for decades!!!

Tommy Joe's was a nice place to grab something to eat middle of the week early evening. Handful of regulars were at the bar engaged with each other and bartender. Bartender took my order and server brought it out soon after. Food was good and the burger was juicy with melted cheese just the way I ordered it. Tommy Joe's seems like a local bar with basic good food that is not overpriced. I'll stop again for food or quick drink when in the neighborhood.

Bonus points for the strawberries marinating in the cocktail because yes, I absolutely used my fork to scoop them out of the glass. No shame. The ceviche sampler was fresh, bright, and flavorful. To stay…read moreby the side of our elderly dog, we are foregoing the experience of dining out, more and more. After we finished eating, she remarked we needed to visit the restaurant sometime. We'll have to look for an opportunity when we are around the dog all day, so she can be on her own for a couple of hours, likely sleeping. Birdsong already is acclaimed. This is much more Thai and Thai American. Like Chinese or Italian cuisine before it, Thai flavors have assimilated to a palate not accustomed to the true strength of the spices. Birdsong is a remedy. They do not offer the pad thai that has become a staple, no longer exotic but to its detriment. (A digression. The history of pad thai, with contested origins, is fascinating. As you delve into these matters, you see how syncretic culture is. You also are exposed to the efforts to fashion a unifying mythology.) We ordered the chicken, the shrimp, the crab fried rice, the papaya salad, and the enhancement. The chicken and the shrimp were quality ingredients, prepared well. Although both proteins were fried, they felt clean. The crab fried rice was one option of many with the rice base. The papaya salad was fresh. The enhancement was radish with "fermented daikon, garlic, red onion, cilantro, palm sugar, and fish sauce scrambled with eggs for a balanced savory and sweet flavor," and the portion was generous: we put it on the rice, then I finished it off in an omelet the next morning. We have traveled to Bangkok. Thai spiciness exceeds what I would endorse, and I love hot dishes. Birdsong was much milder, though with sufficient pepperiness my wife, who does not share my preferences, remarked it was closer to her limit. They will work with you in this respect, and I'm confident I could request something that would test my capabilities. That is, in my book, all positive. The dishes that were mild according to the menu, were mild, but they were flavorful. If you do not like fish sauce, for example, you may not appreciate the offerings, which if they don't have fish sauce have something along those lines. I hope Birdsong fares well.

If you came to Birdsong craving Thai food let it be known that you will be severely disappointed as calling this Thai food is a direct affront to the dignity of the people of Thailand. A certain expectation and fulfillment of spice and delicious flavor are usually achieved upon dining at a Thai restaurant. Birdsong did not deliver on either of these fronts. We had the Basil Rice bowl which was recommended and according to the menu was one of the spicier entrees. A few bites in and the spice wasn't even registering. Let's us take a moment to reflect on the gravity of that statement- while eating at a Thai restaurant, a food genre beloved for its spice, one of the alleged spicier entrees didn't even register a single degree of heat. The ground pork that came over the white rice was dry and the dish was devoid of any sauce so therefore actual flavor for that matter. In practice this meant that 70% of the dish was just white fluffy rice without any sauce or seasoning. I could carry on about the abject failure of the other courses, or how we had finished both the appetizers before the waiter brought my date's beer which she had ordered upon arrival, but I will leave it here. So $94 for two very small apps, two beers and the most flavorless Thai entree I've ever had. Someone needs to smack the chef in the face and remind him he's the chef at a Thai restaurant, not a retirement home. Pathetic

I ordered the Basil Fried Rice, which is described as coming with egg, chicken, shrimp, and vegetables. I specifically requested no egg, no chicken, and double spicy green sauce on the side. Instead, I received plain fried rice with no egg, no chicken, no shrimp, and they didn't include the double green sauce I requested. Paying $15 for what was essentially plain fried rice was pretty disappointing. To make matters worse, the "green sauce" they did include wasn't even the usual spicy green sauce you get when dining in. It looked more like finely chopped green onions than the actual sauce. I also ordered Yaki Udon and requested double spicy green sauce with that as well--and once again, it was missing. It honestly felt like no one actually read my order. They seemed to go off muscle memory instead of following the modifications. Removing the shrimp entirely when I never asked for that just reinforces the impression that my order wasn't checked before it went out. The pickup experience wasn't much better. My order was sitting on the pickup shelf, clearly ready, but I had to flag down the host to retrieve it while a staff member stood just a few steps away. It would take less than a minute for the takeout staff to greet guests, confirm a name or order number, ask if anything else is needed, and hand over the order. The food at Hawkers is good--that's why I keep coming back--but the consistency of the takeout service needs work. Reading orders carefully and giving a little more attention to customers picking up their food would go a long way. Great food, but the execution and service didn't match.

The hostess was very sweet and I got to take advantage of the nice weather and sit outside. It's taco Tuesday, so the hostess and the server both reminded me it was "buy one get one free" - a great deal! I decided to go big and try four tacos, and all of them were very good! I'm from Southern California, so usually am picky about tacos, and some of these really exceeded my expectation. Al pastor: very tender and flavorful. A teeny bit dry, but perfect with the red salsa they brought for the table. Beef birria: nice and crispy tortilla, the consommé was very fragrant and not too salty, and they were generous with the beef. As normal with birria, it's a bit heavier/oilier, so one was enough, but it's very good! Baja fish: probably one of the favs! I made the mistake of leaving it to last, so the outside of the fish was a little less crispy, but if you eat it sooner, that shouldn't be an issue. The piece of fish was very large and cooked perfectly (very flaky). The flavor was great, especially with that red salsa. Avocado tostada: generous toppings, great flavor balance, fun crunch with very soft toppings. If you've ever eaten a tostada, you know you have to approach it like I imagine people approach skittish horses: with total confidence, even if you know it'll end up as a mess on the place. Otherwise, service was very quick and friendly and they didn't come and bother me during the meal, which I love. It really filled up while I was eating, such a testament to how good this place is. I've had this review in DRAFT for a while, to allow time for rumination as to the final rating…read more.. On the one hand, there are some very positive aspects to Beth's, situated in downtown about a 10 min walk from the Bethesda Metro Station. Turn off Old Georgetown Road onto Fairmont Ave, and the first thing you encounter is a beautiful outdoor patio for al fresco dining and a large bar. The colors are vibrant with a focus on Southwestern earth tones; very reminiscent of a cafe you'd find in Sedona. It was still on the chilly side when my dinner group gathered, so we opted to sit indoors. There is a small waiting area in the foyer, and then a moderately sized bar, which leads into the main dining room. TBH, the design asthetic of the space is a bit of a "mishmash." Is it supposed to be European inspired? A continuation of the Southwestern motif? It's all a bit odd... We had about eight in the party, so staff pushed together two tables for us. We were greeted promptly and were told that the restaurant could accomodate individual checks, as ordering is done with handheld devices. My other observation about Beth's is, I'm not quite sure what "story," the place is trying to tell. The menu focuses on "Bites," which could be interpreted as "appetizers" and only has four "plates," aka "entrees." Our server mentioned while awaiting our orders that Beth's wants diners to share the "Bites" with a spotlight on their cocktail selections. So is Beth's trying to be a tapas bar then? I opted for the recommended Purple Rain which consists of Gin, lavender, lime; mostly because I LOVE a nice herbal Gin. The distinctive flavor of juniper berries from the gin was present, while the floral notes from the lavendar and citrus of the lime balanced out the drink. I was pleasantly surprised. Food started arriving after about 20 min, and visually the barley risotto was quite appealing. Instead of short or medium grain rice, Beth's uses the ancient cereal grain barley. It is slow cooked in stock to produce that slightly chewy, yet not undercooked mouth feel. USDA choice braised beef short ribs was stewed until fork tender, and the dish was finished off with Parmigiano Reggiano, and butter. For $24, the plate was a good portion size and very tasty. I dunno. I sampled some of the small plates such as the Brussel Sprouts, crunchy ravioli, crispy spring roll...and everything was fine. Not outstanding...not terrible...but just fine. The kitchen seems to be competent, so it would be interesting to see a menu where more main dishes were offered for diners who want a more substantial meal. The other thing I'll note is, due to the extremely high ceilings, the main dining space is a deafening echo chamber. I was hoarse by evening's end, since I was literally yelling over not just the background music, but the other nearby diners. Just keep this in mind that if you're seeking a quiet and cozy spot, either dine outdoors or come early. After some reflection, I settle on 4 stars. Service was good with water glasses constantly refilled, dirty dishes removed, to-go boxes offered, and the ability for separate billing. Price wise, for one alcoholic beverage, and one entree my tab with tax and tip came to a bit over $50. Automatic gratuity was added for the table since we had over 5 people. I appreciate the server informing us so we didn't "double tip."

I finally made it to Beth's and honestly had mixed feelings about the experience. The food was…read moregood enough that I really wanted to love the restaurant overall. The egg rolls were perfectly fried and delicious with the homemade sauce, and the fries were crispy on the outside while still moist inside. Trey was also a great server and definitely one of the highlights of the visit. The restaurant itself is beautiful, especially the outdoor seating area. The patio is bright, inviting, and honestly a much better atmosphere than the inside dining space. Unfortunately, the music inside completely took away from the experience for me. The restaurant has a dark/lounge-style vibe indoors, so the music really matters. Something more universal and upbeat like Motown, 80's pop, or feel-good music would match the space so much better. Instead, the playlist was loud, distracting, and honestly made me ready to eat and leave. I was also surprised that there was no happy hour offered, especially with such a great outdoor setup that seems perfect for after-work drinks and appetizers. Overall, the food and service (thank you Trey) were solid, but the atmosphere inside and lack of happy hour would probably keep me from returning regularly.
