Visiting Rhode Island for the weekend, did take out from this place twice now. Although most of their food is fried, I must say it is not heavy or greasy. Had the trio the first night. Loster roll had a good amount of lobster. Clam cakes had good flavor, and again, not heavy and greasy. White chowder had good flavor, totally enjoyed it. Second night had fish and chops and the Buffalo calamari. The size of the fish was huge. Again...not greasy. Calamari was tender and not chewy. Place was a great find. read more

Tommy's Clam Shack is amazing. As a visitor from the Midwest I was craving some steamers and this was the right place. They have an extensive menu and friendly folks running the place. The outside eating area is clean. The only improvement I would recommend is having a Shack that serves beer to go with those steamers. I look forward to returning. read more

I love that they open this for the summer months. It was crazy before in Dockside trying to get fish and chips etc on a Friday! Now you can get them when you want ! Awesome steamers, steamed lobster, excellent clam cakes, fish and chips and Manhattan clam chowder. Not a fan of the white chowder- (not milky enough for me- too creamy) or the lobster roll. I just think it's ok but I like big chunks of lobster, not shredded Normally I buy my seafood and cook it myself but sometimes I just want it done for me. They are not cheap (and I don't expect them to be) , but the food is fresh and cooked to order. 1 1/4 lb steamed lobster, steamers and corn on the cob is $28.00 - really good! Whole belly clams are great but the fried shrimp were small and tough. They have great specials, (chowder and clam cakes $5.99, fish tacos) and the employees are pleasant. It can be very hot outside while waiting for your food as there is little to no air circulation in the seating area. It is in a parking lot and you sit at picnic tables so very casual. read more

These small family-run "clam shacks" are found all over New England. Occasionally you'll stumble upon one serving transcendent fried seafood, and sometimes you'll find one that's horrible. Tommy's is "middle-of-the-road." I like that Tommy's will prepare you some of the cheapest seafood in town, as well they should for the no-frills experience you'll find here. Tommy's Lobster Roll features a genuinely good mildly-flavored lobster salad, and can be ordered "half-size," which is still a substantial amount of lobster stuffed into a buttered and toasted top-split hot dog roll. The whole-bellied Fried Clams I would also recommend - they are best obviously straight out of the fryer, their golden craggy surfaces still glistening with oil, with the contrasting textures of crunchy batter, taut abductor muscles, and of course the scorching hot liquefied bellies that explode in your mouth and coat your tongue with pure ocean - these are as good as you'll have in New England at this type of establishment. I wish I could also sing the praise of the Clam Chowder, which I disliked on account of it being made with what I presume to be chicken broth. I am okay with such culinary tricks when they're pulled off in a way that elevates the dish, but this really did just taste like regular clam chowder but with chicken stock instead of the natural clam juices, which is all that's really needed. Also, I'm not sure I enjoyed the Clam Cakes (typically a favorite of mine at these types of places), which were browned to the point of almost being burnt and tough to bite into. I also disliked that they did not serve beverages at the order window, and only at a cash-only soda machine which means that even though they accept credit cards, you'll need to bring cash if you want a beverage. The final quibble I had with my visit here is that the order counter experience was not good: I literally waited like 3-4 minutes in front of a young lady who was sorting quarters and other change or whatever in the cash register before she took my order. I understand that this is a mom and pop restaurant that specializes in cheap seafood and not award-winning service, but c'mon man. Overall, I'd eat here again for the fried clams and the lobster roll if I were in the immediate area, but this is not an experience worth driving to. Food-Décor-Service: 3.0/2.0/NA read more

The Tommy's trio is a really good deal. Only $14.99 for 3 clam cakes, chowder and 1/2 lobster roll. The thing I don't like though is when a lobster roll is loaded up with celery. I feel like that takes away from it. Overall though this place is really reasonably priced and tasty. Even when there's a line, they have the food ready quickly. This is Rhode Island's little secret gem. In the heat of summer, when you crave those dishes like fish & chips, whole belly clams, clam strips, clam cakes and all of that. Dont forget steamers, muscles, lobsters, lobster rolls, stuffies, shrimp (fried or cocktail), etc. Tommy's is the BEST in the state. Granted, there's the well known spots like Iggy's and Aunt Carrie's and a few more in RI but the lines are crazy! Tommy's has all that mastered. Line moves QUICK and this year they started ONLINE ORDERING ahead. (I haven't even done that yet). Very tasty and great portions. Now, market prices for seafood are what they are, but Tommy's somehow makes their menu VERY affordable. The only thing I think is nuts is their lobster roll is like $27.00. That's up there for me....and I typically throw caution to the wind and just order everything I want when I'm hungry lol. No matter the price. Hey, I'm worth it. But I can't justify that hehe. Seating choices are outdoor seating with open sky and there's outdoor seating in a huge tented area, too. Drinks are from vending machines here, so bring a pocket of quarters. (LOL old school) This year, Tommy's added a drink station for cold beers and wine and shrimp cocktails are prepped there too. Nice addition. Lots of parking, music always playing, staff are very friendly and keep the place clean. No bathrooms here. People bring their dogs on leashes here, for some reason. This, to me, is kind of a questionable thing. See, it's a restaurant but you can pick up orders TO GO. Bringing a dog to pick up something to go makes sense to me. 6 people with leashed dogs (some dogs behaving, one peeing on the trash can, a few looking to walk around sniffing the other dogs, one causing trouble) sitting and eating their food at the picnic tables can get dicey. I won't bring my dog cause she wants to play and will be a barking crazy dog there. IMO, It's important to know your dog's behaviors really well before bringing it to Tommy's. Seriously, next time you're hankering for fish n chips, head over to Tommy's Clam Shack! You'll wonder how you've never been there before! read more

Pretty good local seafood shack. Pricey for what it is (I think they all are now) and expensive ($54 for two people). Fish bites were very good, lobster roll as well. Clam cakes aren't as good as George's, Iggy's etc. Chowder is good, not as chunky and full as I like. Nice people behind the counter and nice atmosphere with live music, not overpowering. Talent was a suspect, might be better off just doing karaoke, might save them the payment. read more

Amazing!!! This is so traditional American style outdoor restaurant with great seafood at much affordable price! The lobster roll is $18.99 only and you can get big fresh cut lobster with its claws on 2 gigantic crunch bread - one fo the best bread I've tried. The steamed mussels are amazing too so fresh and not so salty. The sitting environment is also very friendly - $1 per bottle water and $1.75 per soda, with lovely plant and pretty flower surrounding, soothe classic 80' music. Tables are facing somehow west with tall trees blocking the sunshine, so go there in the late afternoon you get no sun shine direct exposure but behind you. We have been wanting to try Tommy's for awhile since we live right down the street and it always looks busy when we drive by. The portions were large and prices are reasonable. My husbands fish and chips was fresh, loved the chowder and the lobster roll was amazing! The only big issue we had was the older gentleman "djing" the music. I can respect playing the National anthem in all but to push political views on customers that are just trying to get some seafood was unnecessary and uncomfortable. First time coming here- i got the trio Bc I wanted clam cakes and a lobster roll and it seemed like a great deal! For $16 you get half a lobster roll, 3 Clam cakes, and a cup of chowder. I was not a fan of the chowder; it didn't wow me and was just meh. The clam cakes were fantastic but sooooo salty, and the lobster roll was delicious. Wow! On vacation and was so excited for this place. My husband and I had our menu items picked out. We were going to get the lobster BLT, fish sandwich and fries. We checked the website to check their hours. It was in another town than where we are staying. Well guess what it was closed. There were disappointed cars sitting outside of it. This one lady stopped us an said this is the 5th time she has tried to get food from there and they were just closed. She was very upset. We are too. We can't try again. We are heading home from vacation. If you are not going to be open post it on your website. We drove 30 minutes away from our vacation town to try you. This is bad business practice. We understand people are short staffed right now, but it needs to be communicated on your website if you will not be open. read more

This place is A1 they have live DJ playing music. Dogs are allowed which is big for me and my family. Staff is very friendly and helpful cook will walk around and make sure food is excellent and is super friendly. Prices are crazy good for the amount u get. Clam cakes and chowder is to die for as well as the fish and chips. The only this is bring your own drinks because they are from a vending machine and very expensive. Plenty if parking and seats available food comes out in a very timely fashion. The view isn't better then Iggys but the food is and way less expensive. The kids meals are cheap and come packed with food and even a cute little lollipop. Now I'm now a seafood fan but my husband and father are so I eat the corn on the cob cheeseburger steak sandwich and chicken tenders all in which are great and you can tell the fryers are always changed and fresh. The salmon burger was tasty, and it was clear the salmon was cut and made fresh that day. The fish 'n chips came with a big, hearty piece of perfectly battered cod that one could easily make two or three sandwiches with. An in-house tartar sauce would've easily put this place over the top. Overall, very satisfied. read more

Tommy's Clam Shack opened in the fall of 2013 and the "World's Famous" sign was there right from the beginning. Definitely a rather bold and curious statement. The shack is located right next to the Dockside Seafood Market that is owned by the same Tommy and that has been around for decades and is kind of locally if not world famous. Rhode Island has a whole heap of seafood shacks and Tommy's is similar to many of the others. Not necessarily a bad thing but there are only so many ways to make take out seafood. Tommy's is indeed a shack, in fact I'm not even sure it qualifies as a shack, I believe it's actually some kind of trailer that was added on to. It doesn't really matter, it's a take out only place with a bunch of tables in front and even some music on the summer weekends. Definitely casual dining. Tommy's has exactly what you would expect from it's appearance, stuffies, fish & chips, scallops, several types of chowder, kraken, clam cakes, fried clams and of course lobster. Even has the traditional snail salad and burger and dog things. Like with most seafood shacks the food varies according to taste and the particular day you happen to be there but the prices are good, food tasty and service quick and efficient if not particularly friendly. I tend to doubt that Tommy's will ever become "World's Famous", but it is a cool place to get some quick take out seafood. read more
