Best hair stylist in Atlanta...IMO. I've been going to Tommy's for about a year and the man has skills! =. Ambiance is unpretentious no frills salon on BuHi. It's at the end of an unremarkable small shopping center. +++ Tommy is by far the best hair stylist I've come across in Atlanta! I used to go to VM for over a decade til my stylist moved out of state. Since then I've been searching for a new stylist for years. Finally tried Tommy last year...the man KNOWS, SPEAKS and UNDERSTANDS HAIR :-) It's not your usual salon but I always leave with a good cut! ++. Price is reasonable ++. Service is friendly and efficient. This is a small salon with only 2-3 people. They run on time :-)! ++. Parking is a private lot...easy spots in front of the salon. My hair was in need of a serious trim (super fried from bleach and heat) and tommy was able to bring life back to my hair by just cutting it! Don't come here for the ambiance or decor, it's no frills but you'll get what you came for: a freaking fantastic hair cut at a very good price. No frills, clean salon like the others say and that's a-ok! Being new to the area, I was eager to find a place close enough to the city rather than trek out to Duluth for hair appointments that I don't have to book weeks out in advance. Tommy was able to fit me in the same day and it was greatly appreciated because it occurred to me that it was probably good to get a cut before baby arrives in a couple weeks. I opted to go without shampooing as I had done it already earlier in the day and walked out a happy customer at just $40 (cash only!) for woman's haircut. I simply said I wanted a trim, asked not to layer too much ahead of postpartum shedding, and entrusted Tommy to the rest. He provided simple styling suggestions and was thoughtful to not put in product for a ready-to-pop preggo. Definitely looking forward to coming back during our time in ATL. Intrigued by the 10 five-star reviews before me, I decided to give Tommy's Hair (otherwise known as One2Free Salon on the building) a try. Turned out to be a good decision! Ever heard of a hole-in-the-wall hair salon? This is IT. No frills and looks kind of like any barber shop, but they've got some skillzzzz. It's actually been in business for quite some time (over 10 years), and I would say it's a hidden gem. I was looking for a Korean hair salon, and Tommy and some of his other stylists are from Hong Kong. The cut was done with expert skill and craftsmanship, that was on par with or even exceeding the skill level of other asian hair salons in the area. The wash and shampoo was included, and was the MOST comprehensive wash and massage I've experienced thus far. I believe she washed my hair at least 2 times, conditioned, and then did a rinse of some kind. It was very therapeutic and I almost fell asleep. I was looking to trim off my damaged ends, cut off 4 inches, lighten my giant horse mane of a ponytail, and have a new look fitting to my face shape that was still versatile enough for me to style on my own. I merely showed Tommy a few pictures on the phone and in those hair magazines, and he knew what I was shooting for. Without even me saying anything, he recommended that I go with NO bangs, which was the right call for my face shape. The cut only took about 30 min or so, and the styling about 10 min with blowdrying and curling. Tommy did an awesome job, he did NOT rely on a razor to layer my hair, unless lots of stylists these days. I loved my cut, and posted before and after pictures (some of which he helped to take!). I'm always on the lookout for a new hair chop spot and with all the glowing reviews my Yelp friends were heaping on Tommy's Hair, I knew I had to drive my locks over there. I'd put off getting a haircut for as long as possible but it was time, novel coronavirus or no novel coronavirus.  I called and was able to make an appointment for first thing the next day. Tommy's (AKA "One 2 Free Hair Salon") is at the end of a Buford Highway strip mall behind a freestanding auto shop; I'd never noticed it before. The salon has a couple of chairs and is basically bare-bones in decor. I was the only client for a little while but then some regulars (or at least women who seemed like regulars) drifted in.  A masked-up Jessica cut my hair, and she heeded my request for a basic trim which I appreciated. No trying to get me to do something else and it sounds like it's up to you if you want your hair shampooed or not. The haircut (no wash) took around 30 minutes which is a sweet spot for me: too quick and I feel like not enough care and precision were taken, too long and I'm itching to get on with my day. I was first to review 9 years ago & I'm here to give a non-surprising update: Tommy is still amazing. I live in San Francisco now. (Side note, I miss NYC desperately.) Yes, I flew across the country and planned a haircut while I was here instead of just getting it cut at some fancy high end, big city salon. It cost $45, with a wash, honestly it's worth so much more. TIP THEM MORE. The salon has that same nostalgia. It looks the same with the black and white checkered floors and no frills atmosphere. I don't really care about the ambiance when I 100% always leave feeling & looking amazing! Like another recent reviewer mentioned, Tommy just KNOWS hair. He knows how good it will look depending on your face and build and hair type. Just trust him. I changed my side part to a middle part--god damn gen z--& he worked with it know I'll change it back to a side part again. He gave my hair options people. He's been cutting my hair since my sisters and I were babies and now, he'll soon be cutting my nieces' hair too. It's not just loyalty. Every girl knows no amount of loyalty will keep you if you eff up her hair. Come here. Get an amazing haircut. read more

I got a haircut here about 2 months ago and I was hoping that I would grow to not hate it. However, I pretty much hate looking at the state of my hair every morning and it's probably going to take a year for my hair to grow back to an acceptable state. I was quite detailed and specific when I stated what I wanted: invisible/internal layers to help remove the weight from my very thick hair (didn't want to see any layers on the outer layer) and low maintenance since I don't blow dry nor style my hair. I even showed him pictures of my prior haircut (from a different salon), and said this is exactly what I want. He seemed to understand. Then he cuts my hair which I can't really see him doing. At the end, he says "so here is the bad news-- you'll need to blow dry your hair, otherwise your hair will look frizzy with this haircut." I'm pretty annoyed at this point because that's not what I asked for at all. But he styled/curled my hair so it was tough for me to see the exact state of my hair. I get home and proceed to literally cry for many hours over the next couple of days. I discovered that I can very much see all the layers, and the layers themselves are extremely short-- some of the shortest pieces on the OUTSIDE layer of my hair don't even reach my ears. As a result, when I wake up in the morning, my hair looks like a freaking helmet with nothing to weigh down the very very very short outer pieces of hair (I can't even really call these layers because they're not even blended). I've never had a worst haircut to be honest. He clearly didn't care about any of my preferences and did whatever he felt like. When my mother called to voice complaints, he responded saying that I probably just didn't understand my hair texture which just has to be the most unacceptable response. I've never in my entire life had to do anything to my hair to make it look decent rolling out of bed, but now I just wear my hair up all the time because it honestly looks appalling. I feel bad writing this review because it wasn't as if the experience at the time was entirely unpleasant. However, I feel like I ought to contribute my review given all the very high reviews (which I read through in detail before making an appointment). I would just never recommend a place where the hair stylist doesn't listen to you at all, and just does whatever he wants. And now I have to deal with the consequences until my hair grows out. read more

Tommy doesn't know what he is doing!!! He doesn't listen to what customer's desire. He insists on his ideas, the outcome is very awkward, awful , not professional, and not great on me. I got my hair cut here out of desperation and I won't do ever again. She cut my hair shorter than expected and was rough and felt that she was yanking it as she was texturizing my long hair. She was not personal at all and many times, I had to say that hurts or can you not pull my hair. She washed my hair and also was rough. The hair cut and was was $35. I have now moved out of Atlanta and live 2.5 hours away but still make time to see him. His assistant Snow is also very sweet and gives the best hair wash with massage. I almost could fall asleep every time. He is the best stylist that always knows what would look best for my face shape. So I went in search of Tommy. Found him on Buford Highway. Tucked into a sliver of shop but none-the-less -- I found him. He's a rock-star with scissors and jeans. He sizes you up. Looks closely at your hair. Analyszes your answers and your preferences. And begins cutting. Within 45 minutes I'm cut, styled and on my way out the door with a smile. This isn't Buckhead. This is efficient. Talent. A no-nonsense wash, cut and dry. Without the Pharr Road attitude. Well. . . the wash is quite something -- a thorough sudsing, head massage and rinse before you meet up with Tommy and his scissors. Cash is king here. So this Salon is actually called One2Free Salon (thats what the sign says anyway) but my understanding is that Tommy is the owner and it would appear, only stylist here. He does have an assistant who takes phone calls, washes hair, and takes payment. I found this salon off a recommendation from a friend who has been seeing Tommy for her haircuts for years, despite having moved to another state! Well with her glowing recommendation I decided to check out Tommy's and I was very impressed! Tommy is truly a professional. He spent time analyzing my hair and gave me recommendations for the cut based on my tastes and likes/dislikes as well as my hair thickness and head shape. I'm a high school student, and I've literally been going to Tommy's since I was in elementary school. I was friends with one of his sons, and he and his team have been working magic with my hair ever since. I've had it cut, trimmed, shaved, bleached, dyed, and highlighted for about a decade, and they have never disappointed me. His hair advice definitely rings true, and it has saved my hair from damage and frizz countless times (as I have lots of curly, fine hair). His knowledge about other hair types and how to care for them is also refreshing, since you simply cannot cut curls the same way you'd cut straight hair. My sis and I wanted to get our hair cut and she wanted to go to Tommy's. The place is called One 2 Free Salon or something odd. It's at the corner of the strip. We didn't have appointments but luckily they were able to squeeze one of us in (me). I just wanted to turn my long bob into a straight cut and Tommy did just that. At one point two ppl were blow drying my hair because I know they were running short on time. I was in and out pretty fast. I will definitely return next time with an appointment. Tommy is amazing. I have been getting my hair cut and colored by him since I was fourteen. I'm now twenty eight. He cuts my dads hair, my boyfriends hair, and if my mom lived closer he would still be cutting and coloring hers. He takes the time to listen to what you need and want. He will always make sure you love it. I used to work at a big salon and I still went to tommy. Also, the way they shampoo....ughhhhh I go into a coma it's so awesome. Tommy Lee is an excellent hair stylist. He has a keen eye that instinctly takes in your face shape, height of your forehead, eye shape and size to determine the best length and cut for you. Pricing is very fair. Not the frills and flattery you will get at a Buckhead salon but not the inflated price you pay for that either.
