Family Foods/Tom's Market reminds me of the type of locally operated grocery stores that were what I had available growing up in a two stoplight town. The interior of the store is a little dated, and everything has an air of being unpolished. Still, it's never let me down when I needed that last-minute something to finish cooking a meal. Unfussy and unkempt, Tom's Market is ready to serve my beds anytime I need them. The staff are friendly, and the selection of products is OK. If I'm looking for harder to find ingredients or specific name brands, this grocery store isn't my first choice. In any other situation, Tom's Market gets the job done. PRO TIP: The fried chicken at the deli counter/hot bar was pitched to me and my wife as the best in Warrenville. On that note, I'm happy to report that they're *probably* right. read more

The store has a very limited amount of items. Lots of empty spots on shelves. Prices were high compared to other local stores and it didn't look like they offered any in store deals. I like their homemade deli salads and broasted chicken. The lunch time buffet is nice too. Good sized dining room. Some of the deli staff take great care in prepping the food too. However, the bakery is a different story. We tended to buy bakery donuts from family foods to support local business, but the donut case items are not always up to par. Recently, we purchased donuts from the display case that were very stale! These weren't day old, but several days! In fact, I've never had a donut that stale! I don't know what's going on in their bakery, but just as well since we don't need the calories. read more

A great independent grocery store with new owners that are making significant improvements. Apple fritters at the bakery are the best. The produce department has been increased with very fresh fruits and vegetables. I bought a bag of organic honeycrisp apples that were the best tasting I have had in a long time. Try the homemade Italian sausage, it is the best around. Huge craft beer selection and a very nice wine department. Long time shopper at this establishment. Convenience initially guided me to this location. I often shop here for a 'few things" to make for a specific dinner. On any given day, if I have a taste or crave for lamb chops, pork chops, a rope of hot italian sausage, fresh 80/20 ground chuck for burgers...you get the idea, I will stop in to purchase and add a "few things" to build a meal around. In general, an impromtu MEAT generated stop for tonights dinner. Thats how I shop! Fantastic in-house butcher department...love the lamb! Great fresh baked French Bread as well. I think their in house eatery needs a little TLC (I suggest; small menu done right vs many mediocre options) I'm really rooting for this store! I went to Family Foods years ago and vowed never to go back as the store seemed dirty. I went today as I just needed a few items to get through the week after returning from vacation. The prices were very fair and the store was much cleaner than the last time I was there. I will definitely go much more often to take advantage of their weekly specials. Meat department was the best I have seen, so I end up buying lots of freshly packed steaks, sausages and ground meat. Deli had everything I was looking for and so did produce isle. Couple that with rude customer service and it's a recipe for disaster. I loved this place, seems like a small mom and pop place, with beautiful meat options for great prices. They also have a really nice deli section with a lot of different things they have made and a lot of cold cut options. The people that work back there on the deli are super friendly! My only problem with this place was with the lady checking us out, she didn't say two words too is and it was our first time in the store so it was a little confusing trying to figure out how they do things so it would of been nice to get some life out of her, you could tell she was about to get off work by how she was acting. That aside I'll be back they have great prices, I glanced around at some of the other things boxed things seemed pricy but I wouldn't go there for that anyway. This place has been around since... forever it seems. This is a quaint and smaller grocery store. It is great if you live nearby and need to run in and pick something up. They also have a fast pharmacy. For the bakery I would give 5 stars. I LOVE their PACZKI! I get them from here every year and they are always equally delicious from year to year. Their specialty breads, cakes, and doughnuts are delectable and perfect for a sugar craving. When it comes close to Lent their PACZKI are always a perfect choice. read more

Produce is unreliable, often bad. When I mentioned something to management, they told me I must not have checked, and do I know how to check for ripeness.... Frozen food has clearly thawed and been left out, and meats cheeses that haven't been properly refrigerated expire before their sell by date all the time. I've had a cashier tell me that she wouldn't buy meat there - after we determined the chicken I was about to buy had already turned rancid (again...within it's sell by date) Basically, I could walk across the street to this place and instead I get in my car and drive to jewel 10 minutes away. I'm really bummed, because this place is so close, but after bringing home ANOTHER bad bag of cheese (which has a month before it's sell by date!!!!) I'm just over it. I've wasted too much money on food that's bad/improperly refrigerated, and management just blames the customer. read more

This is where old ladies do their grocery shopping during the day. The two ladies in line, and the cashier, made it a point to comment on how big (like a Sears catalog!) the fall issue of Vogue was. Anyway, Family Foods is a place I swore off of after quitting my job (different location). But it was my first job, and that was more than ten years ago, and I remembered how good their French bread is, so I decided to stop back in. The bakery goods are still very good and worth going out of your way for. The donuts and seasonal paczki are out of this world, and the French bread ($2.39) and focaccia ($2.49) are my favorite. The prices are fair too. They don't stock their magazines in a timely manner - the fall/September issue of Vogue shouldn't have been up still, but I was happy to have gotten the last issue. The owners, Phil (and Phil Jr., his son), and Paul Salerno were never the friendliest guys, just worrying about every penny spent and watching us like hawks while bagging groceries. Even though they were smug assholes in my days of employment, I did learn the "correct" way to bag groceries (bet you didn't know there was a CORRECT way). Now whenever I shop at Wal-Mart or Meijer I always end up re-bagging my items to conserve on bags and so things don't fall out and roll around the trunk of my car. But since there really is no customer/owner interaction, I can't knock off a star (or five). I didn't buy enough items during my visit to determine if they still uphold the gold standard of bagging. The cashier was a very pleasant older lady, and there was another guy walking around. You could tell he was a smug ass too. Probably a manager or assistant manager - he had that young, "this is my first REAL job" look to him. Oh, and it's definitely worth mentioning that the checkout lanes aren't handicapped friendly! I was able to maneuver just fine, but a very large individual, wheelchair, or mart-cart wouldn't have a chance at squeezing through the "express" lane. The whole checkout area of the store is in desparate need of a makeover. When you walk in, you shouldn't have to THINK about which direction to walk. Overall, this grocery store has that old school charm of being a neighborhood place. It isn't an oversized, big box store and has a reliable bakery. Decent sales on groceries and wine also (Cupcake wines were 2/$12). read more

The apple fritters and cinnamon rolls are excellent. The liquor department offers a huge selection of local craft beers. The beer selection alone is worth the trip. Great produce selection, deli had Boars Head & the meat selection looked fresh. Overall, everything was organized and extremely clean. My family has been ordering the catered Italian beef from Family Foods for many years now. We've even held a "beef-off" with well known named beef restaurants in the area. Family foods comes in with the highest honors with family and guests. As mentioned in previous reviews, this grocer is REALLY working hard to establish a much higher standard than previous owners. All areas of the market have seen improvements. What a great place to find a unique selection of beer and spirits. I have found that the current owners of what used to be family foods are very incompetent. They keep changing prices as well as not keeping essential items in stocks. Also the locations of products are also continually changing and that makes shopping more difficult. I used to enjoy going there because of the way I was treated and helped. I think there are some really positive changes going on here since the new owner took over. I've been shopping here for 15+ years -- and admittedly, I always thought of it as an old-school market that could benefit from a little more TLC. The new, cleaner, more open layout is very obvious. I'm also grateful that the store personnel are now more uniformly cheerful and upbeat. Don't get me wrong, there were a few very nice folks here before. But now, everyone's just more friendly and consistently professional overall. I'm hoping they'll continue to bring in more organic options -- and I'm *really* hoping they'll soon re-stock the fantastic gluten-free section they used to have toward the back. In general, the changeover has been pretty gradual. In fact as I type this, there's still a decent amount of empty shelf space. But I'm willing to hang in there, and encouraged by what I've seen so far. With the right management, this great little family grocery store deserves many more years as a Warrenville staple. read more

I've really given this place several chances. I don't really care how old it is on the inside, but I think their prices should reflect that. If you aren't going to update, lower your prices. They charge more than Jewel does. Their cashiers are rude as well...when a regular is shopping there, they chit chat for 10 mins while I'm waiting in line. Entire store smells like rotting carcass. It hits you as soon as you walk in, and gets worse as you near the meat section. I've never seen a grocery store more wasteful in their packaging. Cellophane wrapped bananas? Seriously? The produce quality is poor, and when it reaches an even poorer condition, they discount it and wrap everything in styrofoam and cellophane. I get the store is older, and that's fine, but it's dumpy. Needs updating. The cashiers are not friendly at all. I've been coming here regularly for almost two years (ONLY because it is so close to my house) and I can count on one hand how many times a cashier has said hello, let alone made eye contact. And personally, I didn't notice a change in the meat department - it looks the same to me (I usually look at the ribs, steaks, and sometimes a roast). I frequent this store often. I prefer shopping local and supporting the community. Family Foods usually has decent sales on various good quality meat cuts. They also carry Amish farm raised chickens at really good prices. I also go there because they offer a lot of authentic Mexican ingredients including a nice variety of dried peppers that I like to use in my chili and salsa. I see that they are trying to make a lot of positive changes since new ownership took over. Yesterday, I received a courtesy call yesterday reminding me to place my order for a Ho Ka farm turkey for Thanksgiving. It's these little things that make this store feel like community. read more

This is the worst grocery store that I have been too. I have purchased several expired items including fruit, deli food, chicken even freezer burnt vegetables. They sell pass the expiration date and I have even found mold in food purchases from there.
