Prepackaged bags of popcorn in every flavor you can think of. They also have fresh popcorn ready to box up if you're a purist! The staff is friendly and helpful. I'm sure every review states this but it bears repeating. They only take cash here boring it with you or use the cash machine in store which has a $2 fee. My family loves to come here for a spontaneous cone of ice cream and we love to split an extra large popcorn as well. It is the perfect balance of salty & sweet, and often when you come, you will be served by Tom himself. It is cash only (but there is an ATM inside). I happened to see this shop next to Starbucks and decided to check out their caramel corn. The proprietor was very engaging and quickly pulled up my request (two bags, no nuts). Pricing was a bit steeper than I anticipated, but so is everything these days. Fortunately I had a bit of cash in my wallet from a recent trip. I ate half a bag in the car before heading home. My wife found the second bag and didn't leave any for me. So, I think the taste was more than satisfactory (perhaps a bit addictive?). read more

Ordered 1 scoop (almond joy) ice cream and 1 popcorn ball (with oreo inclusions). Ice cream quantity is larger and more cost effective (and, in my opinion, of better quality and taste) than that of Grand Ole Creamery (across the street). As someone who does not go for popcorn (and does not usually like it)--I was pleasantly surprised by the popcorn item (to the extent that I may be interested in trying popcorn-based confections). Overall, I would recommend this stop, at least for familiarity with neighborhood. read more

Giving it a full five stars because they have the best chocolate peanut butter malts! ...made with real peanut butter that they scoop right out of the jar of Jif in front of your little eyes. The popcorn is lovely too. This place has been around for forever and is a South Minneapolis institution. This shop is self serving, set up strictly for it's own convenience, not the customers. They don't indicate on their website that they only accept cash. How ridiculous in 2023! They obviously don't want to pay credit card fees. They do have a non-bank brand ATM on site for which customers will pay a fee to their own banks. I've been to Tom's Popcorn Shop three or four times since we moved into the neighborhood last year and I always walk out with a little spring in my step. Not only is the popcorn to die for, Tom himself has the power to brighten your day. He's like that favorite uncle we all have-- the one who tells a lot of jokes, has mastered the art of light-hearted bantering, and would give you his last penny if he thought you needed it. I love Tom's popcorn shop! The bagged up, flavored corn is aweome! Try the crunch or the the double cheddar, so delicious! Tom's also has fresh popped white popcorn with butter, in a variety of sizes. Tom's also has ice cream! It's open year round, and they have those huge tins for Christmas. There is off street parking, as well as a bike rack. Definitely give this place a try, but bring cash, they do not accept credit cards! I remember my dad taking me here as a child and I was entranced by the wall of flavored popcorn. When I returned as an adult, it was really no different. This is such an adorable retro shop. You see mom-n-pop shops like this all around Minneapolis, and it's like a window to the past, which I love. The owner, Tom's son I think, was funny and welcoming. We tried the caramel pecan, garlic cheddar, chocolate, Reeses pieces mix, and the 3 citrus mix. All of these are well coated with flavoring and used big round mushroom popcorn. Obviously, the classics like caramel and cheese are to die for, but the more unusual flavors are good too! I was told that they flavor the 3 citrus flavors (lime, lemon, orange) with hard candy flavoring. The owner called it 'rainbow sherbet without the mess.' And that's pretty accurate. It's like eating Skittles and popcorn at the movies...but at the same time. Very unique. I was also told that they will ship popcorn to Texas for me if I call and ask! Dear popcorn lovers and those who love a good bag of popcorn, your search is over it's right here at Tom's. I may not be the smartest tool in the shed but I know good popcorn. I travel once a week across town to get my large tin of buttered popcorn rain, snow or shine. Period. There are some places around town who sell popcorn but you might as well just get it at the grocery store. This place sells the Rolls Royce of popcorn comparably. Back in the day (when the parking lot wasn't a nightmare) I'd try all the different flavored popcorn they make and I was never disappointed. Now I'm set in my ways and I want what I want. So yes I I give Tom's 5 Stars for the popcorn. Now the owners are a different story. Actually I can't lie I really like them too because who doesn't like nice genuine people? They get 5 Stars. The parking lot is a hot mess but not their fault so I won't judge but you've been warned. Oh, I think they sell ice cream or shakes too. No disrespect I've never asked about that. read more

I was super excited to see a small business in the neighborhood but I've gone past that business many times on my way to Starbucks. I've seen multiple employees without masks (at different times & dates) and once without any gloves on handling food. I love this place! It's adorable and Tom is a great guy. The popcorn is great and they make some crazy mixes. Reece's Pieces and popcorn? Genius. You get your sweet and your salty. They also sell other confections like ice cream and slushies and sodas. Yum yum yum! It's located near Lake Nokomis and Hiawatha parkway, so you can get some popcorn and then go enjoy a beautiful day in the park nearby. Love it! And again, Tom is a splendid man. read more

I have been coming here since it opened. As a child we would save our change to go get some fresh popcorn, we would trick or treat there for a yummy popcorn ball and I continue to stop by if we're back in the old neighborhood. We stopped there last Saturday evening and everything from the caramel corn, cheese corn and freshly popped butter popcorn was fabulous. I can totally forget about microwave popcorn for the rest of my life. One of the best things about living in the Nokomis area is the popcorn shop on Cedar. The white salty buttery popcorn is heaven. I only buy the little bags though, because if I buy bigger I will just eat and eat. One drawback is that is it cash only. I never have cash on me so sometimes I have to cash at the ATM next door. I just discovered this a week ago but now this might be a regular place to hit when I'm back home and going to Dreamhaven or Matt's Bar. I tried the garlic cheese corn and I was not expecting it to be as intense as it was. I also tried the cheese and caramel mixed (because who doesn't enjoy pulling that divider out of popcorn tins and just mixing it all together). The caramel is poured over the cheese corn! It's not just separate kernels mixed together. It's genius. This is not the dry, powdery flavoured popcorn that you'd get in a bag at the grocery or convenience store. This is full on. There are so many more interesting flavours that I did have a hard time choosing. I'll be back to try more! read more

Since I'm in the neighborhood, I get routinely asked to bring a few bags of his sweet popcorn mixes to gatherings with friends or for family back in Iowa. A mixed bag for me (pun intended). The Lucky Charms Krunch was magically delicious! Tasty, tender, and crunchy. Great flavor too. The cheese popcorn was a disappointment. Not tremendously cheesy, and had lots of hard inedible kernels in it. I did like the addition of the black pepper. Perhaps I just hit an older bag. I plan to try again with the white cheddar. I was having a bad day, and on my way home from work I stopped at Tom's. I had driven by it numerous times and hadn't really felt a need to stop, but it drew me in. I had NO IDEA about this gem! I walked in to find a rainbow of popcorn! The woman behind the counter was so sweet and you could tell that she sees this reaction a lot. Tom (not the owner, but the retired Minneapolis police chief!) was so sweet, patient and great to speak with as he scooped our cones (which were enormous - bonus!) Tom's Popcorn is one of my favorite gems in Minneapolis. You cannot get a better milkshake almost anywhere. The peanut butter shake is perfect and chalk full of peanut butter. The popcorn goes perfectly with it because you get the whole salty and sweet business. I found this place many years ago because I played softball at Nokomis and now it's an institution for me. My dad owned Dave's Popcorn Shop for a few years when I was a kid so we consider ourselves a kind-of authority on such things and we ONLY go to Tom's.... and yes Dave's is still around too just nowhere near as good. Everytime my dad came from New York for a visit he would stop by Tom's on the way to our house and get a couple of bags for us.
