Cardigan is a pretty famous donut shop with two locations in downtown Minneapolis. This location is in City Center, and is much larger than the IDS location. The shop itself is really nice, they have a lot of comfy seating, plus clean bathrooms. If you are looking for ambiance, this is the one to choose. They have a huge selection of donuts. My issue with them was their plant-based (vegan) treats: they were not good. I had the coffee cake, and it tasted like it had sat out for a few days, it was super dry and stale. The coffee drinks were also ok, but just ok. I appreciate that they now have a couple vegan options, but I hope they actually put some effort into making them taste good going forward... read more

The two women working this afternoon definitely made me want to frequent going to this shop. The location was very clean and well organized. The donuts and coffee tasted great! My all-time favorite donut at cardigan donuts as the French cruller, but they do not have this often. We did a DoorDash order for 9 am drop off at our house. We were able to order ahead and the donuts came fresh and on time. Food: 5/5. These are the best old fashioned and apple fritter donuts I've had in awhile. The old fashioned donuts almost melt in your mouth and the fritters are light and fluffy with the perfect size apple chunks. Also I really appreciate it wasn't that sweet and the coconut shavings really balanced out the caramel flavors. Definitely recommend when in Minneapolis to check this place out. I also tried the blueberry donut, which tasted just like a fresh blueberry muffin--such a delightful treat! While the coffee cake donut wasn't my favorite and not a flavor I'd pick again, it was still well-made and enjoyable in its own right. Overall, the quality and creativity of their donuts are top-notch. I'll definitely be back to explore more of their menu. We were back a few times during our stay for snacking and just because it was so good. The service is exceptional and friendly the moment you walk in the door. The inside is cute clean and cozy with tables and chairs to sit at inside. They were located right off of our hotel and through the skyway so you didn't need to walk outside at all. I missed breakfast and so I wanted a little something in my stomach before lunch. My sister suggested this spot that was in the mall by our hotel. The young gentleman shared with me what kind of donuts they had and I ended up getting a cake donut and then I had a classic cake glaze. I wasn't too impressed with their donuts flavors, none of them excited me so that's why I opted for the plain ones. The cake donut was good the other one, I forget how they described it but It was too sweet and too thick. The donuts probably would have been a lot better had they been fresher or at least served warm instead of cold. I also tried the Golden milk latte with turmeric, ginger, honey and oat milk, but it didn't have enough honey in it. It was not very sweet at all and not a good drink for five dollars. I hadn't had a doughnut in years when I placed two orders with Cardigan Donuts. Upon finding out that two auto show teammates shared the same birthday last month and that one had flown home that day to find that her family had forgotten about it and had cried because of it, I decided to surprise our team the next morning. Given our Ride & Drive activation, teammates were taking our gleaming cars out on a spin with guests more than they were in the convention center, so I opted for a 1/2 + 1/2 order of glazed and cinnamon sugar doughnut holes to maximize convenience and variety for everyone. I called Cardigan after placing a Yelp order to request swapping a dozen doughnut holes (their stated equivalent of two doughnuts) for a glazed doughnut and a cake doughnut w/sprinkles - the birthday girls' favorites. I was amused at being declined, considering that equivalent swaps would've cost the company nothing while adding to the birthday joy. I doubled my order and asked for one box each of the doughnut holes, with payment for the second box made upon pickup to minimize processing time. I said I'd be there soon, and everything about my words and voice indicated a hurry. I call the shop from a block away for more directions in anticipation of it likely not being directly on the downtown street. Good thing I did - the shop is located inside the Marriot building, with a sign that's easy to miss, since it blends in with the signs it's stacked alongside. Pulling up, I spotted a squad car in front of the entrance and two individuals dashing out from the entrance with two white pastry boxes in hand, darting into a car, and zooming off. They likely hadn't paid for parking. Bold move, considering the cop sitting a few spots behind them. I took over their spot and darted into the building as more illegally-parked cars took off once their seemingly-magical white boxes were picked up, calling the shop for more directions as I did. Second floor. Okay. Except the building is large, I've minutes to spare, and I have no idea which end of the building the shop is on. I flagged a passerby and find that the shop is in between the two escalators - convenient. The shop is gleaming white and bright with cheery colors. I love the vibe, but I'm counting minutes, plus I'd pulled the same parking move that Cardigan is clearly used to, so this needs to be fast. I step up to pay for the second half of my order to grab and go, except: It wasn't packed. None of it. Three times I'd called with increasing proximity. All three times, I'd communicated urgency. In the second call, I was clearly nearing the building. In the third call, I was clearly heading into the building. I watch stunned as the person I first spoke to on the phone tells the cashier to help incoming walk-in guests while she finishes handling a column of cooling racks first before walking over to don a pair of gloves and start boxing my 100 doughnut holes, asking me how parking was in attempt to smooth over the situation while not once speeding up her movements, yet not brushing off the sugar covering the boxes once filled. I'd redesigned a sign for the auto show that's 2/3 the size of my body that I need to carry in alongside the boxes of doughnut holes, and the high winds already make that difficult for petite 5'2.5" me without scurrying to be on time. My team would be understanding of these factors; my tremendous dislike of being even a minute late is a personal thing. I always park directly beside my activation so I never lose time there, and I'm amused to be late by exactly the amount of time I lost to waiting for my order to be packed. An hour in, I tried one each of the two types of doughnut holes - and was disappointed that I'd amped up my sugar and empty carb consumption for a dry and mediocre experience. I'd anticipated having to keep myself from indulging more (I don't diet or count calories, I just enjoy eating healthy), but no such luck. Unexpected, given the stellar reputation. I grew up spoiled for doughnuts. My best friend's house was minutes from a local shop, and I was often greeted with fresh doughnuts still piping hot - plus we had a Krispy Kreme's addiction - I loved KK's to the point it was the topic of my informational speech in college. My professor loved the presentation so much that she requested I present it as an example to all her speech classes - it didn't hurt that I brought doughnuts for everyone every time! Later on, I found out that I'd loved these sweet treats before I even knew how to talk. I admittedly expect a lot from a doughnut, and Cardigan unfortunately didn't deliver. Whoever did the shop interior design did a phenomenal job, though. I might come back to try a specialty dozen or two in curiosity of the great reputation. Lesson learned: Always clarify that "ready for pickup" means boxed and READY from now on. PS: Difference between my Yelp order and my call-in order: $2.18. A Cardigan donut; cozy and very comforting! While walking thru City Center Mall, by accident I came across Cardigan Donuts located on the 2nd floor down the way from Chase Bank. Being a true donut diva, I wanted to go in and look, select and taste all the types of donuts; old fashioned, glazed raised, filled, cake and iced. I didn't see a cruller but I got there later in the day so they could have been sold out along with Boston creme (my favorite). I'll be back in town next week to try those. I challenge you to make the cruller if you don't already. Not many places get this texture right. I believe you can! The shop was beautifully laid out and I liked they had donuts showcased front and center! These beauties weren't going to last the rest of the day. It's small batches here and not production baking so you get a better experience. Naomi helped me with my order, was so nice and packed my donuts neatly. First of all wow, this place is huge. So much space to sit and loved the little fireplace. Really the interiors were just so nice. However we got our donuts to go. I have to say that they had some really fancy seasonals with lots of extras on top of a donut but those really weren't as good as their more basic donuts. One of the seasonal choices I think was a strawberry cheesecake but we really didn't get that cheesecake flavor and it was our least favorite. I also got a kombucha here. Ordering it was a little strange. I asked the staff what the flavor was but instead of telling me they just asked if I wanted to sample it which is great but I'm still not really sure what flavor it was but c'est la vie read more

I've been to Cardigan Donuts both times I visited Minneapolis. Their donuts were amazing! So fresh and tasty. Not overly sugary sweet, soft and light texture. Perfect size, not too small or too large. The flavors we've tried include: glazed cake, blueberry cake, chocolate iced cake with sprinkles, jam filled powdered, cinnamon sugar cake, old fashioned glazed and apple fritter glazed. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the blueberry cake but they were all delicious. The service was great both times as well. The staff members were friendly and helpful. My favorite donuts in the Twin Cities. While yes, I feel it's a tad pricey, I also feel it's worth it. I used to stop by a lot more when I lived in the area, which was nice. I've had this place on my list for months and decided to give them a try. Unfortunately a few things fell flat for me and this ended up being more of an average experience. First, unless you are working/staying in the area, you will pay for parking. I paid $8 in a parking ramp close by to come and try these doughnuts. There really isn't an awesome accessible way to get to this shop. There are plenty of restaurants in the area, so may be consider this place for dessert or take home? The ambiance here was lacking for me. I'm not sure if they were cleaning or remodeling but there were chairs missing, a bunch of boxes out on the floor and shelves that were empty. It just didn't feel welcoming. Due to that factor, I took my doughnuts to go. The service was good. The woman who helped me was nice and not over bearing as I tried to decide what flavors to try. I got 4 doughnuts. The strawberry and lemon tasted fried and were FANTASTIC! Very very good! The fillings tasted like they were made from scratch and they just melted in your mouth! The cake based doughnuts were a full miss for me though. The blueberry flap Jack was almost inedible... it states it was topped with a maple butter cream but it just tasted like butter. My kids also tried this and did not like it due to the butter topping. The caramel delight was ok but I wish it had more icing on it. I also didn't love the texture of the doughnut. I had seen so many pictures of beautiful (almost to pretty to eat) doughnuts and I really didn't see that while I was there. Overall, i had to give 3 stars due to location, ambiance and only liking half the doughnuts I got. I would say if you are in the area go ahead and give this place a try. Spent about a week in Minneapolis and I visited Cardigan almost every day! If that doesn't tell you how good it is I don't know what will. Let me start with the good. Fresh brewed intelligentsia coffee for your third wave addiction. Sticky sweet toffee lattes. Smooth and bitter nitro cold brew. Everything on the coffee menu I had was solid. I'm usually a plain black coffee drinker but I branch out occasionally. The drip coffee here is fantastic. Now onto the great. D'oh! The donuts... mouthwateringly delicious donuts. Fresh baked. Still soft and warm. Wow. These are top tier donuts here. Can't ever go wrong with the old fashioned, but they also had a few different fancy donuts I tried. Everything was great. The coffee cake donut was a nice play on a cake donut. Almond bar hit that cream note that I love. Fruit donuts were all delicious. Couldn't pick a favorite as they were all great. 5/5 fast and friendly service. They also offer BYO oatmeal and yogurt bowls. Thank god this place isn't in Las Vegas because I'd be a real naughty girl and end up having a donut or two (or three) a week from this place. I love the fact that people say this place is great and has unique flavors and that that actually turned out to be the case when we came in. We were just walking back to our hotel in the Skyway system when I saw Cardigan and remembered I had read a lot of good reviews while planning our trip to Minneapolis. We weren't hungry but decided to grab 2 donuts each just in case we wanted a snack later. Not only were these donuts good about 8 hours later, but they were good almost 36 hours later (we bought them Friday afternoon and our other two Sunday morning.) How they have donuts that don't taste like they have all the preservatives but are still tender 2 days later, I'm not sure. But whatever it is, I hope they keep it up. We got a cake, a crueller and two yeasted. All had amazing flavor and packed a punch. The person helping us was also really cool and patient with us. We got a donut that would have been hard to shove into a bag and he offered us a box. So sweet. We declined the box but he still packed the fragile donut in last, tucked in so it would stay intact. Just amazing service. My only regret was that we didn't get our coffee here. That was a mistake. Don't make this mistake. read more
