When in need of a traditional toy store... look no further. We went this past Saturday (we being my grandkids and me). Let's face it, there aren't any toy stores anymore, which is a bummer for the little ones. So I went here and Man, oh Man WOW they have all the good stuff!! Although I will comment that some of the Barbies looked... off. This place isn't cheap either, but thank goodness, they are still open. Bring your kids in and let them see the toys on the shelves and pick out the one they 'JUST HAFTA HAVE' Kites, puzzles, Barbie dolls, all sorts of trucks and toy cars, Legos, stuffed animals, and plenty more. There are not many physcial toys stores left these days which is sad for kids. But this we my go to toy store. They have rows of interesting things. I had a 6 year old birthday party I needed a gift for. I went in looking for trains and found them although I think what they had was a little too young for this six year old so we opted for other items. The kiddo was a Boy Scout and we found this cool adventure line of toys and so we got some of those and found a few other fun things too! Might be a nice store, but the customer service was disappointing and lacked transparency. After being turned down by several stores that no longer offer gift-wrapping services, I was referred to this one. I also searched online for "gift-wrapping stores in Montrose," and this store came up. Wanting to avoid another wasted trip, I called ahead to confirm that they offered gift-wrapping. The woman on the phone said yes -- but what she failed to mention was that they only gift-wrap items purchased from their store. That would've been an easy and important detail to share upfront, and it would have saved me the trip. When I arrived and explained I had just spoken with her on the phone, the response was indifferent. She repeated the policy without acknowledging the miscommunication. Even after I told her that other stores had referred me to them, both she and the manager turned me away with zero empathy or effort to help. That lack of basic customer service is what left the poor impression. Since the store owner has now responded defensively to my review, I'll add this: to clarify, I never expected "free" gift wrapping. I was fully prepared to pay, as I have done in the past at other stores that offered the service for a fee. The issue wasn't the policy itself, but the lack of clear communication when I called. Furthermore, my intention isn't to harm a small business. On the contrary, I hope this can be used as a learning opportunity. Clear communication and a little empathy go a long way. As the owner, investing in better staff training could help prevent similar situations and turn potential customers into loyal ones. The service was alright the day I bought it , but when I opened the Pokemon packs all the cards had whitening in the same locations, when I called them on the phone a worker said that they could've been refunded if I brought the damaged items and receipt I could get a refund, and when I got to the store, they said that they couldn't refund me . The packs were marked %200 above msrp. Don't buy prismatic booster bundles here because if one of them had damage most probably the others do as well read more

Turn it around, Tom's! Tom's has been in the neighborhood my entire life, but something started going seriously downhill a while ago. Whoever has been running the joint doesn't seem to have the least bit of interest in their customers. When I worked retail I was taught to always greet the customer with eye contact and a friendly hello, and I'd ask them if they needed help finding anything. The last several times I've gone into Tom's the vibe I get is that I'm bothering them. No one has ever made me feel welcome, asked if I needed help and when I've asked for product recommendations they've been completely unhelpful. I was in there with my elderly mother-in-law recently I felt they were quite rude when she asked if they could wrap the gifts she purchased. Trust me- they weren't busy. I've been spending money at Tom's since their shop was on the south side of Honolulu back in the 1980s. I am all about supporting family owned businesses, but I will not be going back to Tom's unless their staff can muster a smile and a hello and get off their duff sitting behind the counter and actually assist me. read more

I wanted to have a good experience with my 1.5 year old today taking him to this toy store and having him pick out a toy. Naturally as he is a toddler he had removed some toys from the aisles and left some out as I was chasing after him it was hard for me to also be cleaning up. I acknowledge I could have done better and cleaned up after him but I've been having some pain in my back and it was just hard for me running around after him in addition to cleaning up. The part that was so bad was the attitude of the people working the shop. He got so angry at me telling me he was picking up after my kids mess. I felt really bad and embarrassed and said sorry so many times but his attitude stayed the same. Mind you we were paying customers and as my mom was purchasing a toy I simply asked whoever was working at the cashier to be a little kinder to the customers and he doubled down telling me I made a mess and was incredibly rude. Again, I could have done better by cleaning up but there needs to be a little more kindness in the customer service of a children's toy store and maybe some understanding that the parents are doing their best. It's a children's toy store after all. Reading the reviews here and seeing so many others who had bad customer experience as well. No greeting no smiling nothing, you wonder why this store is empty most of the time. I will not be coming back and if what you're looking for is a positive happy experience buying your kid a toy do not come here. Old school toy store. Tom's toys is good for last minute gifts for toddlers and small children (complimentary gift wrapping) or to browse around. BASIC toys - nothing Tech/Electronic Wise (No Playstation, Nintendo, etc). Kinda outdated, but that's the charm of this toy store. The best things here in my opinion are BOARD GAMES, PUZZLES, individual toy animal and toy car pieces... maybe some random stuffed animals. Kinda overpriced compared to big box stores. This review is written by a millennial with no kids. This toy store is awesome and nostalgic for 90's kids. There's classic toys like etch & sketch and slinkies, and they have adult Lego sets of Star Wars etc. There is a whole aisle of puzzles and board games. Lots of plushies of exotic animals and model cars. I could have spent another hour in there but my husband looked bored. There are no electronic games so this is not a GameStop kind of store. I came in to look at the puzzles fully expecting a price markup but they are surprisingly affordable and around Amazon prices. I bought a 1000 piece puzzle for $14.99. The store is story book charming with a great selection of beautiful, cute toys, nice games, great gift ideas if you aren't that inspired. I am a huge LEGO fan, so I love coming here to see if any new releases before embargo dates are on the shelf.. or if recently retired sets may be still available. The prices reflect market value for the sets... but I've also seen them inflated a bit. But I dont blame them when you're battling the large box stores. Come support this small business. Toy stores are getting harder and harder to find so I am glad that we have a cool toy store like this one in our town. This is just my own personal opinion and you may agree/disagree but I have a hard time shopping here because I just can't justify the price mark up. Before you get upset, I understand this place has to stay profitable to keep its doors open but I mean some toys are legit 100% marked up. Again, I get that we should support local businesses and do everything we can to promote their growth, but I just personally find it hard to justify paying twice as much for a toy that I can order on Amazon that I will get shipped to my door the next day at a much lower price. I'm still giving this store 5 stars because I really do like this toy store and every time I walk by, it reminds me of my childhood when I had to actually go to a store to get toys. I firmly believe in supporting local, and I will still buy toys here because the experience of walking the aisles with your kids is worth it. But today the entry door to Tom's was propped completely open, so I walked in carrying a cup of water without noticing the sign taped to the door that tells customers not to bring food or drinks inside. I had my two young daughters with me. My 4 year old accidentally knocked the water over at the back of the store (of course) and since there was a mop bucket nearby I did my best to clean up the water that spilled on the ground. A young man who worked at the store approached me and I apologized and explained what happened, at which point he rolled his eyes. Okay. No big deal. I'm an adult. But 5 minutes later a middle-aged man who had been behind the register approached me and my daughters looking extremely upset and said something like "Yeah. See?! THAT'S why we have the signs in the windows!" Of course I apologized and said I hadn't seen the signs because his door was propped open, but he spun around angrily shaking his head and stormed off. I bought the toy my daughter had picked out (using cash btw, since their credit card reader was broken) and apologized to the female clerk on leaving, but I'm still fuming over what horrific "customer service" this guy provided. Really need to reconsider your line of work if you can't handle paying customers making simple mistakes and apologizing for it. Wow. read more

I'm not going to completely bash them because they're a great local store, but I do have a bone to pick. I stopped in this morning to check out the Lego sets. I love shopping in Montrose and Tom's Toys is just down the street from my house. I was excited when I saw the set I wanted, but was shocked when I saw the price. The set is $179.99 on the Lego site and in the Lego store, but Tom's had it listed at $229.99!! I looked at some other sets, and noticed many (more popular sets?) had a $40-$50 markup. Some however were priced the same as manufacturer. I found this odd. I really wanted to purchase it, but couldn't justify spending the extra money just because of convenience. I'd like to give them my business, but I'd rather save the $50 and drive a little further to the Glendale Galleria. Also, off topic, but what happened to the Breyer horses?? I have been coming to toms toys since I was younger when we would visit my Grandpa that used to live near the store. Now I love to walk through the ails looking at all the different toys, board games, and puzzles they have, even if I am not buying anything. I love Honolulu Avenue with all the shops including Toms Toys. I have loved toys my whole life and I don't think I will stop loving them just, because most other people my age have. I have never ordered toys from the, because we live so close, and the places we used to live had stores with toys also. My mom has also gotten me and my siblings toys from there. This is an awesome store and I hope it doesn't close for good because of Covid-19. I love the Calicco Critters, food,and animal erasers they sell. They have cool science kits I haven't tried yet. This is NOT the warm and fuzzy hometown toy store. Employees are very unprofessional, and children are berated. If you allow your children to browse before you accompany them be forewarned... they accuse your children of stealing, have someone shadow them throughout the store the whole time, and they watch their every move on cameras. My child opened the outer clear plastic wrap on a canister of slime in plain sight (without trying to pull a fast one) and they immediately approached her and said "you opened it! you have it to buy it!" My daughter was taken off guard cause they popped out the moment she opened the outer plastic wrap. Then they proceeded to berate her saying "you were going to steal it weren't you!?" What on Earth!!! A $4 tiny party favor size of slime and they are berating her. They told her you can't leave until someone comes and pays for it. My husband and I were next door paying for our lunch bill. The kids usually browse until we get there, then we pay for what they choose. Anyways, we immediately headed over, paid for it, and will NEVER support this local store. Granted my child was at fault cause she opened a package and she shouldn't have, hence why we gladly paid for it. But the treatment from the moment they entered, then the accusation they were going to steal, and the "camera footage" they so proudly wanted to show us beginning to end (which displayed a normal child in and out of aisles etc). My Lord! She opened the outer plastic wrap on a plastic slime can. She did NOT put her fingers in it. This is a HORRIBLE experience for any child or family. I have often supported this store even when I knew I can get things much cheaper on Amazon and generally the next day. I support small local businesses so they may have a chance to prosper against the eCommerce giants. And this is the treatment we get in return. This is a child. Also, important to note, she didn't have a purse, backpack, nothing! Where and how was she going to steal this thing? They are clearly in the wrong business!! It's a toy store! Kids are tactile with their choices. They want to play, touch, hold the toys. This place is more like a fine china shop... no food, no drinks, no back packs, no pets, no rolling the open displayed hot wheels, no touching stuffed animals... hmmmm? I am a huge advocate for shopping local and supporting small businesses. Unfortunately this store lost a customer today. The cashier yelled at me about pulling my mask over my nose and while I'm all for following the mandate, which I believe is lifted, there's no reason to yell at your customer. He could have just said nicely will you please pull up your mask over your nose. He was very rude and the other patrons in the store were even commenting about his aggression . I used to make regular stops at Tom's Toy and was always happy with what I found and the prices, but my latest visit was somewhat disappointing, the store has changed quite a bit since my last visit several years ago, before the shelves were packed floor to ceiling with toys now there are toys on the lower shelves and overstock boxes on the upper shelves, just not the same atmosphere as before, the prices have always been a little more than other stores but before they was always something special that was difficult to find at any other store, it looks more like a small Toy's R Us with less of a selection. This makes me very sad because Uncle Tom's used to be a fantastic store with fantastic selection and now it just a mediocre store trying to survive in the age of the internet. 3 stars but only because they used to be such a great place to visit. read more

If you're coming here for the first time, you must come in with an open mind. Tom's Toys has a small town toy store feel with similar products as retail toy stores, but at much higher prices. I really enjoy coming here. They carry all sorts of toys even from the days of when I was a youngin' (no mention of dates, ahem). They carry all sorts of board games, puzzles, dolls, doll houses! After ordering from Tom's Toys and having the birthday gift for my grandson arrive damaged, unwrapped and with the mailing label slapped across the front of the box, so the picture of what was inside could not be seen, I called to complain about their process. They blamed Amazon and said they would send another right away. So, when it arrived, it was in the same condition! Was it a puzzle, a game, a chemistry set? My daughter went into Tom's with her friends. She had her Greenlight Mastercard. The clerk asked her for a pin and because it is a new card she didn't have it. Instead of doing something productive like offer to call her parents or ask about the adults she could've been with, he accused her of stealing the card. This is unacceptable and not an appropriate way to address an elementary school child. Sorry Tom's Toys, we won't be back. Near Montrose Candy Co., Tom's Toys continues the theme of nostalgia since it features a pretty good collection of retro toys. The shop also has new toys. Tom's Toys is a surprisingly big store with a good Lego collection. I'm pretty sure most of the stuff here can be found elsewhere (like at a Puzzle Zoo) or maybe ever cheaper online, but Tom's Toys would be quite handy for those who live in this area (their wide range of knickknacks provide many options for the perfect stocking stuffer). If I had kids, I would love this store around the holidays. Like Montrose Candy Co., parking is available on the street by meter. This street reminds me of those small town main streets where they are a lot of local businesses. Kind of a neat little street to visit. read more

This store has the worst employees. They are extremely rude. I was at Montrose early for the Farmer's Market. The doors were wide open at both entrances. I thought I would go in and look at what Legos they had available. The employee setting up merchandise outside of the store yelled at me, the stores not open. I understand wanting to let me know, but it was not necessary to yell at me. I was literally standing a few feet away from him. I did notice that he had airpods in. Maybe take those out so you can hear rather than yelling at customers??? I will never shop there again. read more

Worthless place. They gave me so much attitude. I got a glass chess set as a gift from a friend. It was broken, no big deal. When I went to exchange it, they didn't even say sorry for the defective product, still no big deal. It turns out that all their glass chess sets were either broken or in horrid condition, no big deal. I wanted a cash refund cause what exactly can I do with store credit? Buy a yo-yo or a teddy bear for my old butt? So the only way to get my full refund (not store credit) was to get the receipt and the original credit card, according to them. MAYBE THEY FORGOT...IT WAS A GIFT! My friend already went off to college far away. Explained the situation and they said they were stuck by policy. Overhead the employees talking smack about me because I was unwilling to accept store credit. This was when it became a big deal. Conclusion: I was fine with the condition of the chess set cause these things happen. I was fine with the store credit because sometimes you can't do anything about policy if your just an employee. I WAS NOT FINE about the poor customer service. They did not say anything but "only store credit". This is a nice store, good stores for kids, and location. The employees there are like robots: insensitive (ITS A KIDS STORE FOR GOODNESS...HAVE A SOUL) and lack the training to handle the situation. read more
