Dr. Toni Chen is hands-down the best dentist (pediatric or otherwise) I've encountered. Our family has been punted from office to office due to insurance for the last year, and finding Dr. Toni felt like coming home. She is extremely warm, thorough, knowledgeable, and efficient. She spoke with our previous dentists and tracked down records before we even walked in the door, immediately forged a connection with my son, took time to explain everything in detail to him and to me, and demonstrated genuine empathy and care. She went above and beyond in every way, including by trying to find solutions that worked with our budget, reaching out personally to orthodontists and providers she trusts during our visit, and by providing immediate follow up and follow through. She is professional, truly knows what she's doing, and makes you feel human even within a system that can be dehumanizing and disheartening. Her office is beautiful and her whole team seems wonderfully present, patient, responsible, and joyful. After our first visit--before even getting to the car--my 8-year-old asked when we *could* go back... What kid says that?! During our second, Dr. Toni extracted one of his front teeth, explaining each step and reassuring/encouraging him the whole time with such authentic care and clarity - and magician-like technical skills. When we got home, I told him I needed a few minutes to write a review -- which he knows I never do. "Well, it will be a five-star review, right?" he asked. I told him definitely and asked if he wanted to include anything. "It was great. Like, just *absolutely great*. I didn't even feel it when she extracted my tooth. I absolutely love Dr. Toni and all her staff! I recommend her to anyone and everyone that has small children especially those who are scared of the dentist. The staff is so kind even to the crying children...my youngest would cry every time, but she gradually has gotten used to the office and looks forward to their prize box (which not many places.do anymore). The amount of care that goes into everyone one of my girls is above and beyond. From my oldest to youngest all enjoy going and getting their check ups. Some of the check ups are not your typical for me. My middle daughter has an array of issues but Dr. Toni helps her and walks me through and explains thoroughly what needs to be done. We've been taking our daughters to Dr. Chen for the past 7 years. Their quality of care has always been solid. I've never had to wait an unreasonable time for an appointment & today was even able to add on a procedure (extraction), saving time from coming back. I have to say the staff and dentist is nice but long story short they are quite over-charged and asking us to do treatments that may not be needed. First story, We came here when my daughter was 2.5 and my son was 5.5. We moved from Rowland to SG and so we switched dentist and it was our first time there. The dentist found a small cavity on my daughter's 2 front teeth and offered 2 type of treatments, and told us we should take care of it soon since when she was only 2 and there were 4 more years before the baby teeth would fall out. The cavity can gotten worse and hurt her. But we decided not to, since she was too little and the cavity was really small. We went for a second opinions 6 months later, and the other dentist only told us to monitor more often (every 3 month) and didn't not need to do any treatment for her. Now she is 6.5 and the teeth is still good (still a very small cavity, no treatment) and hasn't not fallen out yet. Second reason we did not return was their over-charged/billing system. We have delta dental PPO for years. My kids did annual x-ray and checkup without paying anything out-of-pocket at our previous dentist in Rowland and now new dentist in Rosemead. Our new dentist is even out of network, they still charge us $0 copay and. $0 out of pocket. But the front office ladies here insisted we had to pay 20% of the whole bill and ended up over $200 for 2 kids. They only did annal cleaning and check up with X-ray. For the same service, we didn't get bill for at all the other dentists. So it quite didn't make any sense. I gave them my insurance information when I made the appointment, they never gave me any quotation or copay related information. It was very surprised I had to pay that after all. I would recommend always look for second opinions when it comes to treatment (big or small). 2 stars for their nice service and friendliness. But get a quote before your appointment, don't get surprised like me. read more

Even if you're early or on time theyll make your wait outside with your kids despite the cold and rain for 10-15min. That's AFTER they send you the text to go into the office. Also they only allow one parent even with multiple kids. Convenient location but otherwise absolutely nothing special. The office is small so if you have more than one kid look for a practice with a office or facility large enough to accept both parents and where you dont gotta wait outside to be let in. Doc and staff are nice, once you're inside, if that means anything. read more

I didn't have the best dentist appointment for my child yesterday. My child has been seeing the dentist here for almost 10 years. We've been loving this place and the friendly staff here. But today, without finishing the conversation, the dentist just let us go out and shut the door. I couldn't tell what was wrong and felt horrible for my child. My son has been going to Dr. Toni's office for a few years. I was just there today and realized that this five star review is way overdue. Dr. Toni is knowledgeable and cares deeply for her patients' wellness. She is also very considerate. My wait was long last time (6 months ago) and she was very kind and apologetic for the wait. Today, she made sure that my appointment was not delayed and even recalled what happened 6 months ago! She obviously takes thorough notes and cares enough to read her notes before seeing her patients. I am impressed! I never thought that I would say going to the dentist as a treat but coming here has certainly been great. My only dismay is that Dr. Toni will not treat adults! However if you've got an offspring that needs their teeth done I can't recommend this dentist enough. Scheduling is easy, offices cleanly, entire staff is sweet and caring. This would normally be a 1 star review, but because I felt that Dr. Chen as well her hygienists, were very nice and professional, I am leaving it at 2 stars. Who would ever sign up for paying $724 for just regular cleaning for 2 kids when you have insurance? (and no, no X-rays included) Well... certainly not me. My kids were new patients, so when I made the appointment, they requested insurance information, which I provided immediately. Normally, I would expect the staff performs all the benefits checks to let patients know of copays before services are rendered. I guess this was not done. After the appointment, I received a call stating that insurance company had not paid the claim and I was expected to pay for the bill. Hesitantly, and because I felt it was partially my fault for not checking on my end, I agreed and paid for some of this bill. Obviously, after careful consideration, that did not sit well... I feel that it was their duty as a dental office to check my benefits and to tell me upfront what my fees were going to be before services were rendered. If I would have known it would cost me this much to get a regular cleaning, I would have opted for waiting a few weeks so that insurance can cover for the entire service. While I feel that I could have checked directly with my insurance, really...that is not my job...it was theirs. Ultimately, they dropped the ball, and they did not take responsibility for their mistake. read more

We were referred to Dr. Toni Chen office from our primary dental office as my 6-year-old had cavities in all four of her molars. We wanted to explore anesthesia for her treatment as we were afraid she would not sit through with laughing gas treatment. We had our initial consultation with Dr. Chen and she went through both treatment plans and provided her opinion on which option would be suitable for our 6-year-old based on the child's behavior. We are glad we went with Dr. Chen's suggestion of giving her a try using laughing gas (which also saves us on additional out of pocket expenses for local anesthesia) and seeing how she tolerates the treatment. We have been able to finish 3 out of 4 of her molar crown/filling treatment thanks to Dr. Chen's professionalism, patience, caring, and intuition on how the child will sit through the treatment. read more

My son has autism anxiety and ADHD he does not like the dentist. This dental office has been so extremely patient and understanding with my son. It took him about 6 to 7 visits before he finally was familiar with the office and they would suggest that I would bring him in frequently so he could get used to the office. Everyone that works there is super sweet with the children. I have to say that this particular day Toni Chen made herself available on her day off because my son had an emergency in the middle of the night his tooth became infected and had a huge abscess and she was able to call in a prescription for him and meet me the very next morning on her day off. I cannot say enough positive things about this dental office . I'm so grateful for finding them and that they are so close to my house! I liked Dr. Chen, but overall, I will not return nor recommend this clinic. We visited last July and recently for cleaning. After everything had done this time at the front, I was told by the clerk that my son's insurance did not cover him. She asked me to pay the fee from the previous cleaning the amount of $281.00. I told her that I will check my insurance company and call back. Until that moment, I had never been informed about the bill and the issue by the clinic (6 months past from the first visit). I checked the insurance company and found out that my son was covered by my health insurance. I provided them misinformation. I called and asked the clerk and she said they don't accept my insurance and I had to pay now. Yes, I paid $558 right away. This was my first time for me to take my child to the dental office. so, I was unknow. HOWEVER, they should have informed me what was going on and there was unpaid bill BEFORE the second cleaning had done. They could tell me when I called to make an appointment. Or They could tell me when my son and I stepped into the office.... If so, I would cancel the appointment, not accept the cleaning, and not have to pay the second treatment fee. I recommend you to get an estimate BEFORE the treatment every time you visit with your child. They will not tell you unless you ask and give you a big surprise at the end. read more

We were referred by my dentist to take my daughter to Dr. Toni. My daughter had always had anxiety and nervous when going to the dentist. Dr. Toni was very patience with my daughter and knows how to make her feel comfortable. She's a mother herself so she understands how kids can get very nervous and some may be traumatized. Dr. Toni slowly creates the bonding between her and my daughter each time we go see her so know my daughter prefers to see Dr. Toni now. Doctor is very through and detailed when explaining your treatment plan and always make sure our questions are answered. Dr Chen has made the whole dental experience for my son a positive and fun one! My son doesn't mind going to the dentist because of Dr.Chen! Dr.Chen and her staff are very welcoming and always have a smile on their face. She is very calm with her patients. She always explains what's going on and what she is about to so the patients don't get scared. I know kids can get freaked out with all the tools but she has a way of putting them at ease. Her office is clean and they are following all COVID protocols. Masks and face shields, temp checks, COVID questionnaire before your appointment and hand sanitizer. The dentist herself is awesome, but this assistant just makes a simple routine checkup an absolute nightmare. Recently my daughter had to get 4 teeth pulled because of braces. I was extremely glad that we had switched our daughter's dentist to Dr. Toni half year ago. Because my daughter had such good previous experience with Dr. Toni, she was not that nervous when she found out that she had to get her teeth pulled due to overcrowding. Once again, Dr. Toni never failed us. Both her and her staff were superb!!! Dr. Toni was doing such a job in talking about all sorts of things that my daughter was interested in to calm her down, that before my daughter knew it, she was half drowsy from the laughing gas that I don't think she felt a thing when she had ALL 4 teeth pulled! It was one of the most calming teeth pulling experience that I have gone through. Her assistant Jackie was also extremely good in immediately hiding every pulled tooth as well as the bloodied gauze so my daughter never got a sight of it. There are several pediatric dentists, however there are only a few that can really connect with the child and ease their anxiety; Dr. Toni is definitely one of them. Below is my score for the experience, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. I have no idea why my Chiropractor's wife would recommend this awful place for us to take our daughter to. At first, the staff and Toni Chen seemed pleasant and everything was okidokie, but once we made the initial appointment everything just went downhill! First, she promised us no gas, and no bondage of any kind will be used, but every freaking time we took our daughter in she had her assistant wrapped her up with a rug and even when my daughter got freaked out and cried her eyes out she ignored her and proceed! She even snapped at us for just sitting there, and not helping out to hold down our daughter! What the hell? Plus, the bill kept on getting higher than what we agreed on. Oh another thing, the filling came off on the later visits, and she blamed our daughter for nothing being still there n previous visits so she couldn't perform her work well. Just excuses and excuses for her everlasting unprofessionalism. When we were too upset to come back, the receptionist sent us a nasty letter scolding us for being rude to not respond to her calls. We just didn't want to lower ourselves to their level, and yet they still not getting it. Now we have a much better dentist, and have never been happier. Dr. Toni and staff are just so GREAT! They make going to the dentist a pleasant experience. My 3 year old has been twice and has not shed a single tear. My two daughters have always had a good experience here. As much as they dread going to the dentist, they usually come out happy and relieved after seeing Dr Toni. My older daughter who is 8yo had her teeth pulled out but the laughing gas actually somehow calmed her down and she was not terrified as she was with her previous dentist who had traumatized her with painful injection to he gums to the point she never had her teeth cleaned since due to that incident. So transitioning to Dr Toni was a win for all of us. Overall, the staff is great and does not seem to overbook. We have not encountered any issues so far so we are very happy. read more
