Wow! A friend recommended Tonno and we finally got there last night. Both food and service were impeccable, and the decor was attractive. We shared an antipasto which was excellent and very large; then hubs got cioppino and I got veal saltimbocca. Portions very generous, so we took a lot home. Oh, and the cocktails and complimentary focaccia were top-notch, too. Parking seemed a bit limited; we lucked into a space adjacent to the restaurant, but I don't know how much else there was. Had a wonderful dining experience for Sunday dinner to celebrate a birthday. Dirty martini with hand stuffed blue cheese olives are hard to find and they did it right! Split an antipasto board between 5 people and we all had plenty for an appetizer. Everyone was satisfied with their entrees. Bolognese pictured was very good and a large portion. Chicken parm, veal Milanese, half chicken and swordfish were all very good. Great ambiance as the bar was completely full on a Sunday at 5pm. Service was friendly and attentive by Cheyenne. We came up to Gloucester to spend a Valentine's Day Weekend. I made a reservation for the restaurant two days prior to make sure we had a great night out. It's unfortunate to say that the evening was disappointing. After an hour and fifteen minutes they served the entre. They completely forgot the salad. Meanwhile, other surrounding tables ate and paid before we were even served. It was humiliating and embarrassing for me and the person I love. I would not recommend eating there. read more

Think its more of a 3.5ish. Certainly good, but not sure if its destination worthy per se. The bar can be a bit of a sh*t show in the summer, but it certainly is a good time, albeit crammed (given the space). The crudo and the tuna tartare was as fresh as could be (and it better be), so I'd suggest sticking to that realm, more than the traditional Italian fare. The "Sunday Sauce" wasn't anything to write home about; it needed more seasoning. The bartenders are great here, so certainly a great spot for an app and a martini, if you can get a seat, that is. read more

Ambiance - while busy (Valentines day), it maintains an intimate quality. Service - The service was prompt and attentive and the waitress was very informed on the menu options. Food - excellent! Tuna tartare was so good I didn't take a picture and just dove in. My wife had butternut squash gnocchi and added cod as a protein. All of it was well cooked and delicious. The gnocchi was light and the cod was very fresh. I had a veal rib shank with creamy polenta, sun dried tomatoes, wild mushrooms and a red wine demi glaze. If I could have licked my plate and not gotten divorced I would have done so. This was recommended by the waitress. Great call! Some of my girlfriends and I were in town for an event and decided to check out the brunch at Tonno while there. We arrived right as they were listed as open but there were already people seated inside. We were sat by the window and handed our menus and ordered cocktails. Our server was amazing, but the food and drink runners were not quite as quick. They would forget a meal or cocktail occasionally. The food was great. Between all of us we got calamari, two different types of panini's, a lobster roll, and a lobster benedict along with various cocktails. Everything was fresh and tasted fantastic. This was such a surprising find in Gloucester, which I mostly associate with fried seafood (and lots of tourists). After hanging out with family, we took their recommendation and got a seat on the patio at Tonno. There's free parking, and at 3pm on a Saturday it wasn't crowded. The patio was really nice, shady and not too loud, despite the number of tables. We started with the $1 happy hour oysters (I haven't seen oysters at this price in Boston in forever) and some drinks. Oysters were really good though we did get a couple shells. I really enjoyed my Main Street Old Fashioned, so definitely go for that if it's the kind of drink you like. The Tonno Pilsner was also really nice and refreshing. The service and main dishes were really what made this meal 5 stars for me. Our server was wonderful, made my meal dairy free without a fuss, and just had a really nice vibe overall. The orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe was fantastic, with a nicely spiced tomato sauce. My husband got the veal saltimbocca and said it was one of the best he's had. The rest of the group split a tiramisu at the end and I had a little bit and it was delicious, definitely something I could entirely on my own if I didn't know the consequences. It was really heavy on the coffee flavor and the mascarpone cream wasn't too sweet. Overall a delicious meal and totally worth the price (most entrees were around $30)! Unfortunately walking down Main Street today, one of the staff (a heavyset man in his 40s), yelled across the street at my 70 year old father asking him aggressively why he was wearing a mask. Really nice ambience to the place and it was very clean. Staff are all in masks but people walking around were not. Portions were disappointing, given the price. My husband's ravioli were slightly larger than a quarter- bite size. The waitress sold us by saying you get "13 large ravioli". My Ciopinno was so salty that I just picked the seafood out. Its one of my favorite dishes to order when on the coast and I usually happily enjoy every last sip of broth and I simply couldn't because the salt was just too much. The focaccia was really light and airy, with an perfect crust. 5 star focaccia! One thing I noticed was no offer of parmigiana either. However, half an hour into our visit, after we had just received the overpriced cocktails, we were warned that the manager had another group booked for our table in 1 1/2 hours so we should place our dinner orders. A bit of an unusual way to handle the situation. With 10 minutes left, as we were waiting for the server to bring our check, the manager began cleaning up the table. Clearing napkins and silverware. Horrible experience Friday, 3/15. Seated at a 2 top between a 4 top and another 2 top in the small back room. Absolutely no room for the servers who would squeeze in to serve the other tables. At one point we had both servers with the rear ends literally hanging over our tiny table! Disgusting! Asked to move and it was met with resistance to say the least. Manager was rude and adamant we make a decision about dinner without providing us a spot at the bar. Obviously if we couldn't be seated we wouldn't stand and eat. But he couldn't offer that. Why wouldn't a manager say, "Hey - I'll seat you asap as bar is first come first serve. When you're seated I'll fire your meals." Instead he was condescending as if we were lucky to even be there. We don't go out to dinner very often, but last night we went with friends to Tonno Gloucester to celebrate both a birthday and a 50-year anniversary, on the actual day. Everything was great, waitress (who didn't rush us but encouraged us to take our time), ambience, food, right up until the end. That was when another staff person showed up and informed us we'd been there long enough and people were waiting and we needed to leave. We had been there two relaxing hours, and this break-in to our celebration was sudden and unexpected. This was not an inexpensive meal. It would have been a little better if they told us they would appreciate it if we finished up pretty soon (you know--ask nicely!), but the whole get up and get out attitude was quite offensive and left a bad taste in our mouths about the whole experience. I don't expect we will go back, no matter how good the food was, and it will be difficult for us to recommend the restaurant to others. read more

Our server was great, made my wife's dairy free meal without a fuss, and finally had a really nice service vibe. My guest got the veal saltimbocca and said it was one of the best. The orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe was over the top, with a spicey tomato sauce. The rest of the group split a tiramisu at the end and it was delicious, definitely something I could inhale on my own if I didn't fear the consequences. Heavy on the coffee flavor and the mascarpone cream wasn't too sweet. Overall great drinks, delicious meal and warm experience ... totally worth the price (Slightly high $125-175 per)! This restaurant was recommended by a coworker who lives in Gloucester so I had high expectations. Parking was limited and tight. Building lacked street appeal. Entrance was better. No entrance greeting. Young lady that sat us was emotionless with worn converse sneakers on. Table by the window for two was adequate. As people were seated next to us it became uncomfortable. Our server was fabulous. She was very attentive and friendly. Mussels portion was too small for two people. Shrimp cocktail was good. My wife ordered the Halibut and I had the Cod. Both dishes were cooked perfectly. We both thoroughly enjoyed these dishes. I have come to expect a "table touch" by the manager yet this is not in practice here. I have a basic belief that front facing people make the biggest difference in a dining experience. No exit greeting put the icing on the cake. With out-of-town guests in tow, we searched for a restaurant in Gloucester that served cherrystones - and found Tonno - and were we happy we did! Tonno is a bit upscale, with lots of seafood and non-seafood choices. I had the Spaghetti Fra Diavolo with Shrimp (freshly made pasta and the best shrimp I've had in years), others ordered the Mussels, Swordfish, and Cioppino. Each was delicious and carefully presented. We shared the Antipasto Board, which was enormous. The star of the evening was our waitperson Sarah. Too many restaurants suffer from bad service or invasive service. Sarah was attentive, efficient, and helpful. I highly recommend that you ask to be seating at one of her tables. Tonno's prices are a bit on the high side, but so is everything these days. But it was well worth it! read more

I had an Italian spritz of some sort, friend had a Manhattan and we split some of the best grilled octopus since I was in Portugal. I love Tonno! This is our twice a week go to place for dinner and Sunday brunch. The food is always excellent. The service is mostly good. Sit at the bar and you're going to have a good time. Get any of the women servers on the floor and your going to have a great experience. Summertime must have been hard to hire for. Our last few visits we needed to sit at a table rather than the bar. We got REALLY green and undertrained servers (young men) who waited on us each of the three times. The last young man simply was not ready for this position. He didn't know the menu, forgot items, forgot to write down items, brought warm Pellegrino to the table, stopped us three times mid order with the "wait a minute finger" and simply walked away, forgot he hadn't taken our whole order and walked away from a group of pretty girls his own age in someone else's section and rushed us through our order. Look, dinner at Tonno is going to run you 150.00 to 200.00. This time was no exception, but to the management - please make sure they are ready for the floor before you turn them loose. If we weren't such loyal customers we probably wouldn't return after our last three visits. Tonno take out is always a fantastic option too. Food = 10 out of 10 every time. read more
