Finally had the chance to try Tony Packo's cafe! I can see the appeal- easy, delicious, affordable. I liked that the menu was relatively small- do one thing really really well and add toppings and sides as options. I ordered and was surprised at how quickly my hot dogs were on the plate. The lady at the counter was very nice and helpful. I'm not really a chili person, but I at least wanted to try the famous sauce. It's a preference thing, but I did not care for it. The hot dog is obviously the star here. Snappy Frank and perfect bun. German potato salad was also good. I love that they serve fountain Pepsi. That kinda made my day. Nope, I'm lying. Just had the four piece fish dinner at the Maumee Packo's. Would not recommend it, had a hard time cutting it with a dinner knife. Tartar sauce was an orange color and did not taste like any tartar sauce I ever had. Also ordered the blueberry turnover after seeing the appetizing photo on board. Added whip cream which cost an extra $2.00 and consisted of a small spoonful which melted by the time we got home. Given that I was visiting family, they decided to take me to the classic Tony Packo's for a hot dog. Following the recommendation from my family, I got the fully loaded hot dog complete with mustard, chili, and onion, and opted for the German potato salad for my side. This is the type of sausage that snaps when you bite into it and so much better than the junk you get in the grocery store and fully loaded is a must. One of the ways you know you live in the MidWest is by counting the number of places that offer hotdogs and mom n pop burgers. You'll get a lot of ice cream places that also sell hotdogs, and hotdogs are rarely sold without chili sauce. I absolutely love the fact that I got so many different hotdog places and that they are all slightly different from each other in their own rights. Packos is one of those historical Toledo staples that's been around the block. It was definitely recommended by more than a few people when I first moved into town 6+ years ago. I tried them first back then, but didn't have the same kind of appreciation as I do now. I'm not gonna say they have the best hotdogs or the chili sauce that I've ever had, because I've had some GREAT hotdogs and chilis elsewhere (althought not around here..) They're of Hungarian origin. Since I can't claim that I've ever been to Hungary, or have any Hungarian friends who may have been inclined to teach me all about their homecooking, I can't confirm they taste *just* like the dinner my great Hungarian aunt used to cook for us. But what I *will* tell you is that they have a character and consistency. They don't taste anything like what you might have had in any "all American" hotdog places. For that I give points. It's all about uniqueness when it comes to such simple food as hotdogs and burgers. They have to have that little something that differenciates you from the other two hundred thirty five places in town, and imho they do. Now, like I stated previously, I didn't get these sort of sentiments the first time I visited. So it's probably safe to say that they grow on you over time. One might even say it's an "acquired" taste, also this phrase generally isn't used in these type of context. Dogs with"everything" comes with a sausage, a line of mustard, onions, (chili) hotdog sauce with side of pickles by default. I personally have never seen anyone get it without the extra shredded cheese, but it's optional. Today happened to be a Tuesday so I got it for $2, which was nice. Purpose of today's visit was really to check out one of their newest menu, Packo's Poutine, which tries its best to minic the traditional Canadian poutine, but with Packo's twist. I think they did a great job. It was definitely enough food for me and I'm happy with it. The final test will be to serve it to my 11 year old daughter and see if she likes it. I am from Toledo, Ohio and was a fan of the show M*A*S*H so I take for granted my awareness and adoration of Tony Packo's. Most people I meet outside the area have never heard of this restaurant. I feel sorry for them. My son and I drove into town from Columbus and stopped into the Conant Street location for lunch. This location is situated in a small retail building in front of Meijer... has been open for a short time, relocating from its position as restaurant tucked inside The Anderson's Retail Store but a staple in the area since the 1930's. Parking is plentiful. Ordering is a breeze - you line up, cafeteria style (only they keep the tray) and place your order. My go-to is a perfect sampling. The #1 combo: one Packo's dog, one side (I choose the mini chili mac every time - served over dumplings, it is the tastiest and neatest chili mac you may ever have) and a drink. (They actually have fountain soda and a flavored 0 calorie water available - how times have changed) The have a drive-thru but I prefer to eat in for one primary reason: complimentary pickle bar. Whether you prefer the Original or Sweet Hots ( or like to mix them like I do) you can have as many as you like. (They also have the bread and butter pickles as well as pickled jalapenos. Pickle heaven.) The combo is about $9. The Packo's dog is a Hungarian sausage, split in half and served with chili sauce and onions ( if you like). You can also add cheese for a small upcharge. I hear a lot of griping of getting just half a sausage. My opinion is it is the perfect portion. Sausage is high in fat. The thinner portion means this grilled gem is the perfect texture. If you want a whole sausage, order 2. They do offer an American hot dog but believe me - go for the original. Another great item on their menu if you just can't bring yourself to have a hot dog id Chicken Paprikas. A Hungarian specialty, paprika-sauce served over chicken and those delightful little dumplings. Their cucumber salad, cole slaw, macaroni & cheese, or french fries are all the best you may ever have in Ohio. not the original location but the original state and the current menu so close enough... for all appearances Tony Packo's is your basic rust belt hotdog joint but with a connection to both television and regular history. kind of a big deal locally Packo's has been a Toledo fixture for about a century and a TV phenom for half as long. lots of Packo-vian memorabilia including signed bunnage on the walls to offset the standard dining room furnishings. was in town to catch up with my best cousin and got in a bit early because I had inadvertently skipped brunch on the way up leaving me very hungry and a little grumpy, good news is I have time enough to remedy that before coffee and sweet :-) I just wanted a little something to hold me until dinner so an original plus cucumber salad and a fountain beverage. maybe it's me (quite likely due to time and miles today) but I felt misled and underwhelmed :-( okay, it's a sausage but not really a hot dog... hot dogs are traditionally fine ground meat and stuff of a uniform texture indelicately crammed into a casing of uncertain origin whereas what I received had actual discernible bits inside. so I'm upset that I may have been served a superior meat stick? sounds crazy but yeah, a little... with my fanciful imaginings of exquisite regional hot doggery undone I moped my way through the rest of my lunch. the cucumber salad was cucumbery and creamy but otherwise unremarkable, the soda cold and bubbly and possibly orange but I can't be sure :-\ I will return again one day with my expectations adjusted to an odd surreality of what constitutes a hot dog -vs- a sausage sandwich and have another go at this storied great lakes eatery. until then... read more

Was looking for something in Maumee and me and my friend had no idea where to go. We both love hot dogs so we decided to give Packo's a chance! I got the Hungarian soup and fries. The workers made both of our fries fresh and they were amazing! I would definitely recommend going here for hot dogs cause my friend said she loved them. I have always enjoyed coney dogs but they are hard to come by where I'm from. Like most people like me, I had first heard of Tony Packo's recommendation from MASH. I was delighted to find Packo's was right next to my hotel. I really didn't have the highest of expectations, it was just a chili dog after all. Well, Packo's is by far the best coney I have ever had. I think the key is the dog, it has a natural casing that gives the perfect snap when you bite into it. The coney sauce, that you can purchase canned in the store if you want, was also incredible. I'll be coming back here next time I'm in the Toledo area. It was very very good stuff! read more

Tony Packo's is a Toledo main stay, offering up tasty Hungarian-inspired fare cafeteria style since the '30s. Despite some ownership issues as of late, the chain is still serving up the same tasty hot dogs and paprikas I remember from childhood, as made famous by Jamie Farr on M.A.S.H. (check out the story on the Packo's website if you aren't familiar with it :) ) This particular branch is located inside the Maumee Andersons (worth checking out on its own) but still has the same tasty food as the dedicated restaurants elsewhere. Though the atmosphere is more confined, it is a lot more convenient than driving all the way into Toledo if you live in the suburbs. For this visit, I tried the chicken paprikas... which I was craving (curse you Johnathan Harker and your lengthy discussions of recipes!) A very good choice, I got a nice serving of juicy chicken in a rich sauce over a bend of tender spaetzel. It's a bit salty, but leaves you full and content. The meal was served with some bread and butter (I chose rye, which was fresh and chewy). I also really wanted some cherry strudel, but they were out... a bit disappointing. I remember the strudels as being very tasty, though. Worth a try if they have a flavor you like. They also had cookies and there is a stand for Toft's ice cream right near by. My companions had the roast beef sandwich (open face and large in portion) and some of the classic Packo dogs which looked great. ...I gather they were too. :) All of this is served on fairly sturdy disposable plates with plastic flatware. You bus your own tables, though the staff must clean fairly frequently as the place was nicely kept on our visit. As mentioned, ordering is done cafeteria style which can be a bit confusing if you don't know the menu. It is available online, though, if you want to take some time beforehand to think about what to order without blocking the path. The people working the line were polite enough on our visit, and had no trouble making use of a coupon we had brought along. Of course, you can eat pretty cheaply even without a coupon, easily under $10 a person. The eating space itself is larger than you might think looking at the narrow cafeteria entrance when walking into Andersons. It isn't as nifty looking as the dedicated chains with their walls of hot dog buns signed by famous people (though there are a few here too), but the lighting and soothing paint tones are pleasant. However, it is a bit echoy with even tiny noises seemingly amplified. For a quick fix of tasty Toledo Hungarian food, though, it's worth dropping in. read more

For my meal i selected a single "original" hot dog with all the fixings and a side of paprika dumplings. I ordered online and it let me pick a time for pickup so i picked 12:30 I didn't have much time. I got there at 12:31 went to the drive through and was told to pull up to the window. There i was told to go park in pick up spot #1 I set there for 20 min. I know that everything is pre made. So don't use the online ordering I your in a hurry. DELICIOUS!!! It's a small cafe-style restaurant with the best of Tony Packo's. The decor is rather plain and seating is limited. But they are fast and even have a drive-thru! What completely wins me over is that they have gluten free buns upon request!!!! I don't recommend getting chili as a side though, I thought it was like actual chili and not the chili sauce they use for their hotdogs. It's condiment chili not actual chili. Yuck by itself. Mmmm what a fix!! This Tony Packo's is a mini version tucked away inside the larger "Andersons" store. Keep that in mind as you're driving around beating up your GPS wondering where the hell it is! LOL! This "express" location is in a "food court" cafeteria-style versus their flagship restaurant: order at the counter, pay at the register, take your tray of food, and find a table to sit down. Well as soon as we put our tray down on the table there was a long hair on my husbands hot dog. So my husband didnt eat that. I tried to stomach through mine but I just couldn't. It was spicy but somehow bland. The chili fries had very little cheese but a lot of their coney sauce.
