I came in for a $55 student service. This should be the first indication that I'm on a student budget and anything totaling over $100 would take me by surprise. I was charged an extra $20 for a trim and $35 for detangling. I appreciate the work they put in and don't mind compensating but I need you all to start warning customers. My stye was very cute and lasted a long time (3 weeks for a micro twist out & rods on medium length hair). The total time it took was a lot longer than expected (roughly 6 hours from start to finish). This included everything from the hydration to taking the dried twists down. I had such high hopes after seeing Onye's work on Instagram. Unfortunately, I've wasted my money yet again. I honestly don't have the energy to detail my entire experience-the picture will tell the story-but I will say that I am VERY communicative. No one ever walks away from me without knowing exactly what I mean. I give very clear examples and scenarios. You know how somebody acts all confused when they don't want to do something? That's the vibe I got from the time I scheduled the appointment to actually sitting in the chair. I was really irritated with the receptionist who tried to convince me that I wouldn't need hair added. Lady. Trust me. Told her to budget the time anyway when I scheduled the appointment. I show up day of she asks what we're doing I tell her. She again tried to downplay adding hair talking about time constraints. I said well that's why I was very specific about making sure time was scheduled just in case. Pissed. Turns out I brought the wrong hair so we had to forgo adding it anyway. I asked for a tapered cut and stated that I didn't necessarily WANT to go shaved sides, but if necessary for the integrity of the cut and for the sake of cutting off all damage I was open to doing so. The initial intent was a crochet taper cut, but again I had the wrong curl pattern. My issue with my own hair was no existing cut/style and terrible splitting. In addition my hair is thin and fine at the crown thus the need for enhancement. So anyway, Onye set about cutting it. I noticed that she did not cut the top (yes I still have ragged splitting ends up there) she comb coiled the sides and and last minute was like I'm gonna go ahead and rod the top. Mind you I wanted an alteration to my tight coils and told her that, so I'm not sure why rods or rollers were an afterthought. I had also told her my crown has ZERO definition and will frizz. Yeah, so I walked out with the sides and back defined and the top on struggle, frizzed and sparse looking. She also didn't line me up. I don't understand that. Overall, I was irritated by the receptionist and her anti hair stance and was kind of disappointed in Onye's disposition and general view on adding hair. It was very clear she didn't want to. Again, I did buy the wrong hair for the look I was going for, BUT she's a freakin BRAND AMBASSADOR for that particular hair. Like OK...you should be able to create a look with any of their products. IDK if she had a bad day, was tired, stressed, or what, but she was zero energy and not at all engaging which was a bit disappointing. Even still I wasn't against going back with the correct hair to allow her to do a tapered crochet. Gawd said no. So fast forward to me realizing something is just not quite right with my hair. It felt off and just didn't look right after washing, but I couldn't pinpoint exactly what the problem was. It took about 3 weeks but it became very clear when I happened to take a photo that was head on. Y'all, my haircut is UNEVEN. AS. F!CK. Like, I'm really out here cut up like Krusty the Clown. Once I realized and accepted that I decided to do a light blow out instead of air dry next time I washed to really assess what was going on. That is the pic I'm attaching to this review. I legit have to go get my hair recut. I'm typically very critical of reviews and tend to choose complete denial when I see a bad one (overlooked the bad ones for too groovy) but don't be me. Disappointed. I've been here once before and they did a great job but the last time I went it. was. awful. It took over 2 hours and my hair didn't turn out how I expected (luscious, silky, smooth, etc) BUT it was decent (re:straight). By the time I left the salon and got home (maybe 1.5 hrs) my hair had reverted and I had to get busy with the flat iron to save what little bit of a style I had left. I called the salon to ask if the stylist to hair flat iron and blow dry to try to re-seal my hair and the best they could offer was a trim a re-style - for an additional $40-$50 - If I could come in the same day. As I informed the stylist that wasn't feasible they told me a manager would call me to discuss. It never happened. I've never had such a ridiculous encounter. And just to note, most natural salons (like Tags) sit you under the steam therapy for at least 10-15 minutes. This salon left me there for maybe 5 minutes. Rookie mistake. I wouldn't recommend this salon if you are looking for good customer service. Just as a side note: the wash bar stylist was amazing and did a great job on customizing my wash to my hair needs. read more

First, let me just say that the salon is in a prime location of Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood. Just being in that area alone should set the salon apart from other natural hair salons. I must say that the salon set up is very nice and cozy and both front desk operators were very customer friendly and receptive. Second, I have little to no faith in these hair stylists in Atlanta, GA. It is my belief that they think everyone in ATL is here for the dramatic over the top hairstyles of the youth. I am not old myself but I am pretty conservative. When I explain a hairstyle or provide a picture I expect the results to look semi-similar if not identical. Especially if you say..."oh, I got that". Third, this was not really my experience but this is near and dear to me. I am trying to get the name of the hair stylist because I don't want anyone else to experience this. I took my sister to this salon who was here visiting from overseas. She is in the military and probably more conservative than I am. Anyway, after much pleading that she should not let any of these Atlanta stylists do or even think about clipping or cutting her hair. She went against my wishes because of a YouTube video she saw on someone's vlog who had the owner to do her hair. Now, this could have been the Ponce location where that lady completed the style and if it is she should definitely re-evaluate her stylists at the Buckhead location and fire them...matter of fact, lets not be that harsh...send her behind back to cosmetology school. Anyway, back to the story (I digress). The lady washed, shampooed and, steamed my sister's beautiful natural hair that had to be almost touching her shoulders in a twist out style. Let's just say when she walked out she had a buzz cut. All of her sides were low like a boy or man and there was a patch in the top looking like she was about to take flight. My sister was trying to convince me and my brother-i-law that she was fine with the outcome but we knew better. That convincing was more for her than it was for us...she was trying not to have us make a scene. That would have been ugly. Anyway, this horrible cut was $85...which I would not have paid. My sister ended up ashamed to go out in public. We went to a beauty supply store the next day for a wig. She is now going to another hair stylist in Florida to get it all buzzed evenly. It is a shame that black women here in Atlanta, take it upon themselves to destroy other black women. I am not sure if this was done on purpose but it was enough to destroy someone's spirit and livelihood. Food for thought for this stylist...the next time you feel the need to cut someone's hair in that way...please ask yourself would you wear it or would you let your child wear it. I've come to Too Groovy quite a few times (like 4-5 times). And typically, I'm pleased with my hair results. I only come in 2-3 a year to get my natural type 4 hair trimmed in a way that would avoid heat damage. I prefer the Textures salon over its main Too Groovy location because the stylists are better about treating natural hair. The only con I keep bumping into is the price changing depending on who I spoke to on the phone when scheduling my appointment vs the stylist vs the final receptionist who tells me my finally bill at the end. I need to know exactly how much or a tight range of how much I should prepare to bring. Other than that issue, I do like coming here for my trims & hydration treatments. read more

She styled me and 30 minutes later it looked like I never went to too groovy. I came back before the closed the same hour, she re did it supposedly and ended up hiking the heat up and causing breakage in my hair. For this to be a texture salon, they struggle with 4C majorly. My fiancé is a producer for a talk show that the owner of this salon was a guest of, so we decided to go there and check them out. My fiancé had 4C fiery red hair, and upon booking via phone she asked for her ends to be clipped, a hydration treatment and a twist out. We went there and the stylist who did her hair decided to give her a rod set instead, and never gave her a hydration treatment. The stylist name is I believe Roshita or Sholita (you'll know who I'm talking about), she's light skin and kinda y'all with loose textured hair. She's also a colorist having a loud conversation about how the singer Ashanti needed to bleach her skin (this stylist is a mess).... anyway, my fiancé hair was done horribly, it was extremely dry (due to it NOT GETTING HER HYDRATION TREATMENT) and the hairstyle was so ugly, Roshita/Rolita SUGGESTED THAT SHE JUST NEED TO KEEP WEARING HER HATS!!! I have been going to the too groovy midtown location for years and have always had good service, but I've been trying more natural (non straight) style lately so I booked with the too groovy textures salon. I called to make an appointment for individual braids w/ my own hair (no extensions), the person on the phone scheduled me and gave me a price after she spoke with the stylist. I get to the salon one girl washes and hydrates my hair a different girl blow dries my hair and does a terrible job. My hair is puffy, frizzy, not smooth. After sitting and waiting almost 30 mins the receptionist comes over and says the person who scheduled my appointment did not do it correctly and basically I'm not able to get the style I requested and for me to choose a different style. I declined, and requested my hair be blow dried properly so I can leave. Another stylist comes out apologizes and offers for me to come back Wednesday for a free service. I decline again because I have no trust in this salon what so ever. Natasha, the stylist that I was booked with did not touch my hair once! I was really excited to come to the salon and throughout my visit my stylist Marla justified my happiness.It wasnt Until the end when she began making slight comments of how my hair was killing her of course whispered to the stylist Angela in front of her. As well as one thing out loud to me which was that This hair really stretched out. Regardless of her making me feel like a burden during the styling process because she also said more than once that she is soo behind coupled with the other comments, my experience and desire to come back was not soured until it was time to check out. I had booked a three part service online plus the price of trim.I also asked my stylist before officially starting and after looking at my hair if there would be any additional fees but she said no. When it was time to pay the girl in the front told me my total head went up 20 additional dollars. When I asked why she said the service I booked online was not showing up on their screen. Luckily I had taken a screenshot and showed her but she did not acknowledge it and continue to tell me my total would be the higher price. I repeatedly asked why so I can make sure I don't run into this problem again next time as well as to understand the up charge. At this point it was the manager I was speaking with and she told me there's nothing I can do that it's a technical error that it's not showing up on their screen and she would need to contact the tech support but i still owe the higher price. If it wasn't for my proof, I would've had no justification to pay the price I was originally told as I did. I found this very unprofessional and since it was the last encounter I had it is now the most memorable one. All in all each hair type is different and that should be taken into considerstion here especially for first time clients. These prices are high enogh and rather than charge me for your technical issue, she should have accepted the problem as there own immedientaly and the back and forth discussion shouldn't have continued nearly as long as it did. read more

The shampoo assistant was very nice and did a great job and soon sat me in Sande's chair. Sande did the big chop for me and was very informative on how to care for my hair afterwards.
