Pastrami on rye -- hold the mustard.
    Bob W.

Fast and friendly service plus where else can I get a Pastrami sandwich in Florida ? Almost like New York but the wait staff don't have the New York attitude.... Which is entertaining.... But the place tries to mimic the new York ambiance --- still the pickles are very good as was the pastrami.

Went here with 2 friends for dinner the other night. I was struggling to decide if I'm 2 or 3 stars here. 3 stars is a place that is good to me and I'd frequent. 2 stars had some real issues and I'm not sure I'll return. I think this is somewhere in between those two. I've never eaten in here, so it was confusing when we went in. There is a counter, with a person that does take out counter service, but there is also a hostess stand. There wasn't any one at the stand, and the counter person didn't really direct us, so took a few minutes to figure out what we needed to do. Once seated, our server came by quickly and got our drink order and brought them out and took our order for the meal. That was pretty much the last we saw of her, without flagging her down. It looked like there were only 2 working the floor, but we had to try to wave her down a few times for more dressing, our check, another drink, etc. 2 of us got Shepherd's Pie and the other got the Strawberry Salad. My friend said the salad was good. I was not a huge fan of the Shepherd's pie. I make shepherd's pie and this was lacking. Mine had less stuff in the bowl, compared to my friend (less meat) and it had not enough mashed potatoes on top but a mountain of melted cheese. Usually there's a nice crust of mashed potatoes and a sprinkling of cheese. I could barely taste the potatoes because the cheese was overpowering. Once we asked for the check, that took a bit. We put our cards out on the table and we waited at least 20 minutes for her to take them so we could leave. One of the other tables got up and paid up front, which we were close to doing ourselves. My Shepherd's Pie and diet soda was ~$22 before tip, which seemed steep given that the food was mediocre. I'm not in a hurry to go back.

    Carrot and Banana Cream cakes

When I walk into a bakery I want to look at the items in the case. Hostess was TOO helpful suggesting items! Finally decided on their supposedly "2 most popular" cake slices to go. Silly me thought they would cut it fresh! No, it was taken from a case already in plastic containers and immediately put into a bag to checkout. After we return home I realized why! The carrot cake was 3/4 of a slice at best. The banana cream cake is give a 3/10 and the carrot a 2/10. I may be a little biased since my wife is an awesome baker, but for $8/slice + tip, it definitely isn't worth the price!!

I've been to Too-Jays about a half dozen times. Service has always been slow and not overly-friendly. Basic diner food. Nothing special.

But when I first visited Harry and the Natives about 6 months ago I realized this place was different. Now, I can honestly say it's a place 'I look forward to' vs. a lot of The Villages food options which are 'places i settle for'. Pricing is fair for the quality you get. The drinks are Tiki inspired and delicious (I highly recommend the Village Dodo) and you can tell they pride themselves of freshness and quality. They have some of the best crab cakes I've ever had, a bit pricey but they are almost 100% crab (almost not binder/filler) and if you know the price of crab these days you'd understand the pricing. For me, a Village Dodo drink, Filet Mignon medium rare 'surf and turf' style with a crab cake, and creamed spinach side served outside with the tiki torches blaring is near perfection in a meal.

We took a sunny drive over to celebrate a major birthday for my darling spouse.....and were FLOORED by the experience and the food...."THE FOOD"! Oh my Goodness!!! More on this shortly..... This Virginia girl (A Florida girl since the 1980's) fell in love with the eclectic decor and table settings that looked like my Momma and Grandma's heirlooms. Vintage prints and paintings. Red vintage bloomers with lace on the hook on the back of the door of the "Ladies' Retiring Room and Necessary" [my terms, to be fair...] Photographs of young belles and their children who arrived later. A decent interval later!!! NOW, the food. Hot, homemade cornbread to the table, and a peach ice tea that is like no other I have enjoyed ANYWHERE in the south. Hubby chose the Texan Chicken Fried steak, with smashed potatoes and greens, and I picked my favorite southern dish (one that I cannot make at home without ruining ~SHRIMP & GRITS!) and it was beyond description. Shrimp almost the size of quail, with perfect spices and texture. Creamy grits with cheese and a few bell peppers for a variety. I never DREAMED of using salt or pepper.....it would have been an affront the the dish itself, My husband's smile told me he loved HIS chosen dish down....that, and all but licking his plate! We have the decadent looking slices of cake her to share later with coffee, but there was no chance we would skip trying them.....but also no chance we could eat them immediately after lunch without exploding! Service was prompt without hovering, and we will be returning either for MY birthday or if we have friends come to visit. HIGHLY AND TOTALLY RECOMMEND FOR A SPECIAL MEAL.
